    Great job at stopping and reassessing your situation while going through that snowbank. So many people don't do that and they end of having a very bad day. Great job at not being stupider... 🙂

    Not trying to be disrespectful at all. We deal with this all winter into the summer. If you start up higher and let your rear swing down and keep your vehicle pointed uphill at a 30-45* it wants to climb naturally. The first time feels awkward but those that wheel in snow a lot will agree that you will cross the drift with less downhill drop and side angle. Watch jantz jeep.

      @OzarkOverlandAdventures  Місяць тому +6

      Sounds like an interesting way to cross a snow covered shelf road. Not something I’d want to try without someone to teach me that knows what they are doing.

    • @IDAHOverland
      @IDAHOverland 22 дні тому +1

      @@OzarkOverlandAdventures something for everyone to think about when attempting to cross an off camber snow drift. Peeps also have to keep in mind that the downhill side of the snowdrift will almost always be mud trying to slide your tire downhill. If you choose to try to cross, it's best to stay uphill a bit more than you'd like to keep your rig from becoming a new scenic attraction. Always be willing to reassess the situation and remember, it's ok to turn around and go a different route. Stay safe and keep adventuring.

    Something than no overlanding channel that I have seen has ever talked about having a shovel because it’s actually a forest service rule/law to carry an axe shovel and bucket in/on every vehicle. If I remember correctly it is to put out a fire while it is still getting started and hasn’t destroyed thousands of acres of land. This was something that was drilled into me by my father because it was drilled into him every year by members of the forest service back in the 1980s when he drove logging trucks.

    What a great adventure and glad you didn’t die 😂. That shelf road is a good example of one of the disadvantages to our camper build. I would not even attempt it in it. It’s wide, heavy, and 20+ degrees is right on the edge of disaster. But having heat in the snow is a plus!

    Another use case for hi-lift. if you didn't have anything to winch from, you can jack the front up a few inches, push it to the side - just small incremental movements so as to not loose stability.

    Snow in June, who knew! We were in Hells Canyon a few weeks after you, the contrast between the weather for your trip and ours is crazy! Like you guys, we also weren't able to make it to Black Lake. One of the locals mentioned the snow drift at what they call "High Dive". We decided Black Lake will need to wait till the fall. :) Glad you guys and the pups had a great trip regardless of the weather.

  • @joec4871
    @joec4871 Місяць тому +2

    I've been in that situation many times. In that situation you should've drove with the two passenger side tires on the snow and the driver tires on the trail as close to the drift as possible in case you slide. There was not enough room to go around it or do like you did and get out and shovel the drift. Safe camping 👍.

    I used to try using tiny collapsable shovels to save space but they were just too small to work very well when I needed them. I now carry a regular shovel with a mid-length handle. If you don’t already carry one it’s a good idea to add a 100’ winch line extension to your recovery gear. It’ll go a long way to reach anchor points where the trees are few and far between.

    One thing I like to watch is aircraft accident investigations, and what can be learned. Especially in general aviation, they have something called "get-there-itis" and how it can cause a cascading chain of events leading to disaster. The point is, as Kenny Rogers sang, "know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em".

    It might feel like a "once in a lifetime" deal... but for us that live up here, we get to see it all too many times! I had a temp swing on labor day near where I live 2 years ago... where we started at 100 before noon, and an ice storm came in 4 hours later and it was 36 and windy blowing snow. Went back down the mountain and back into the 80's... Snow has happened every month of the year in Montana... I imagine this is common for Wyoming, Idaho, Washinton and Oregon too at high elevations.
