    I was worried (and surprised) about the condition of the wiring at the nav desk in 2020-- it was clearly a mess. The other thing that worried me was water coming through the engine hatch cover in the cockpit-- the engine clearly had a lot of rust and the only way I could see it coming in was from the top--the broker also wouldn't let me start the engine.... You guys are doing a magnificent job!

      Many thanks. You’re spot on she was in dire need of some love and attention. Motor actually runs well for the moment and she seems fairly sound apart from the large amount of rust. We’ve managed to clean her up ok for the moment and in the future will remove it, blast and paint it. All the best!

    Looks great. In a UA-cam world of inexperienced people adding extraneous guff to their boat it is so nice to see experienced sailors simplifying a classic tri. Well done. Just a quick question, are you going to use a different oil for protection after the WD40? IIRC WD40 is great at penetrating and dislodging rust but would not a dielectric grease or some heavier machine oil be better for preventing rust into the future. Anyway - looking forward to seeing her sailing again - I did get to see an interview with a previous owner on Fair Isle's channel (I think). She certainly seemed highly capable with trips to Greenland and Ireland.

      Thanks we did see that series it was great and gave us some insight into her early life. The engine is now being maintained regularly so we’ll keep it with the WD for now and when we get to Australia it’ll be pulled blasted and painted like new 👍

    Excellent work. Was the boat once named "Copper Mine" 😃. The cleaned areas, tidy wiring and sorted plumbing in the engine room are a vast difference to what was there originally.

    I am so happy to see this amazing vessel in the hands of real sailors. Nothing was more upsetting for me than to see her turned into a puke barge (charter boat) out of Papagayo Marina. I felt like it was akin to turning a thoroughbred into a plow horse. As I commented before, she is the best boat I have ever sailed in short seas off Nicaragua. Safe, solid, fast and reliable in any sea state. Love that CW.

    I was always wondering what boat you guys would end up with. A Hammerhead 54, amazing! I lived in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and I talked to Chris a few times when sailing some of my small tri designs in the river near his house. I can’t wait see what she will be like after you get her all fixed up and out sailing!

    Looking forward to following your journeys, including this all-important refit. Was it a Hammerhead you were specifically after - or did it tick enough boxes? Have always been a fan of Chris White’s designs - esp this trimaran.

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. We wanted a larger Spirit and this boat ticked all those boxes. We hadn’t even thought about a hammerhead as they’re rarely listed for sale so when this one came up we jumped at the chance to view her. Once onboard we knew she was made for us :-)

    Wow, that is a lot of spaghetti! Were you able to get any salvage money out of all that old copper wiring? The engine compartment looks transformed. Great progress.
    You mentioned a 24 volt alternator. Will the engine use a 12 volt starter motor and battery but the “house voltage” be 24 Volt? (Pardon my ignorance.)

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  8 місяців тому

      Yes we’ll be running a 12v starter and a 24v house system and alternator. 12v starter battery is charged via DC/DC chargers and the 12v side is powered by DC/DC converters.

    How do you get to the fire extinguisher in the engine room? Is there a hatch above it or something? Seems strange if that's the only access

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  8 місяців тому +2

      It’s an automatic extinguisher that is activated via temperature. We also carry eight portable extinguishers onboard and we have temp, Co2 and smoke detectors in the engine room, battery compartment, and electrical cupboard. Early detection is key for fighting fires onboard :-)
