I have binge watched your entire series and am finally caught up. Congratulations on the engine installation. You are again amazing. No job, no matter how difficult, is beyond your capability and we all admire you for it. The new engine sounds smooth and quietly powerful and will propel Karl briskly for sure. You are an inspiration for all of us.
Geez, one of the bravest and gutsiest things I've ever seen. I'm about to Repower my 40ft sailboat with the same Betamarine engine. Totally inspiring and humbling. What a woman!
I have just found your very enjoyable channel and once again I have some good binge watching. I don't know what your engineering background is but from what I have seen so far you have put many sailors to the back in knowledge and ability. You are a joy to watch and I haven't you sail yet. What a treat I am in for. Well done doesn't begin to praise what you have achieved and I have watched more sailing videos (many hours per day over many days and months) than you have had hot dinners so I do have some idea of how good you are and how sad I am. :)
Thanks Pete. It was quite the challenge and a bit nerve wracking to be honest. It did stress me quite a bit that a lot of money was at stake if I mess up 🤣. But so far…motor is still running so can’t have been that bad 😁
Getting ready to install a Beta 25 in my Catalina 36. Thank you for these videos! Super informative, and quite moving, actually. I teared up a bit when the engine started up for the first time. What a feeling that must have been!
Fantastic job, ladies, with the new engine installation. You are an inspiration to all us yachtsmen and yachtswomen everywhere! Fair winds and following seas and no more thunderstorms, please👍💕
From one who has been there ... congratulations that is a major major accomplishment. And I totally get the emotional aspect of that first start up. Now that you have taken on and conquered what is the greatest fear of most boat owners you need fear nothing. You can do it all. Great job!
Get your self and outboard engine fuel line bulb pump along the the same size hose. You can use it to fill/empty coolant, engine oil, etc. You can even use it to pressurize the diesel engine pump. It can also be used to test/flush fuel line between the fuel tank and engine. Just remember, it can do vacuum or pressure !
My favourite channel! Unpretentious, natural women doing great things. I have three daughters who I push to choose their own paths in life, without stereotypes and you are both great examples for them. So, many thanks, and congratulations on successfully installing the engine. I hope to meet you in an anchorage somewhere!
You guys are great nontraditional role models, most men I know couldn't have done what you have done nor would have they tried. Proud to say that my daughter and a grand daughter are made from the same mold as you.
☺️ well, for me it was a HUGE project, I had never done anything like this before and there was some money involved if I messed it up. So I was VERy happy when all went well in the end. So far, the engine did not complain and it’s been what, six years now, I think 🤔😜
When you consider that the speed of sound is around 340 metres per second that flash and the bang was almost instantaneous, jeez that was pretty close. Not ashamed to admit it I would have screamed like a little girl too. Fantastic job on big red, that should give years of trouble free motoring and peace of mind.
Nike!!! I've been following you for a long time and watched you tackle problems with your boat head on. You educate yourself and attack the problem with determination. The measurement you were trying to relay, was 2 thousandths, not 200. 200 is 1/5 of an inch (5.08 mm) and my micrometer eye even though it's not what it once was, it can tell the difference. Great alignment work!! Don't ever doubt your abilities, and don't ever lose the faith you have in yourself. I'd let you work on my boat anytime!!
Yes, exactly, William, it was 2 thousandth of an inch. I had problems pronouncing that, that's why I never got it right...The 2 thousandth of an inch would just not enter and for my engine I had to be below 4 thousandth of an inch, so I was happy with the result :). Ahoy, Nike
You speak better English than a lot of people I know. You speak Spanish fluently........ I am handicapped by be born in the USA. No need to learn a foreign language, because our department of education feels the rest of the planet should speak English. Great job on the alignment, .002" pushing and pulling on that big diesel.
What a great great job you did there!!! I almost had tears come up when I saw your look as the engine started for the first time!!!! I'm happy I found your channel :)
Good Job!! Be sure and set the idle a little higher than you have it IMO. It really makes lots of difference in keep up the oil pressure. When tractor trailers pull into a rest stop and want to maintain their cabin temp, they always set their idles up higher so to keep up oil pressure while sleeping. Your new engine will last longer.
What a brilliant job, well done. You should be mentoring young ladies through school and college. Aint nothing you cant do. Well done again, happy motoring.
I suggest that you add an audible alarm for engine temperature and oil pressure. The expense is small and it could save the engine from burning up due to overheating or loss of oil. It's unlikely that these events will happen but the cost is high if they do. Also shaft alignment should have no more than .003 between any points on the coupling faces, however, getting a flexible coupling is very smart and will reduce vibration and the need to have the shaft as highly aligned. This will reduce vibration to a minimum which will reduce wear and tear on the engine, cutlass bearing, hull and just about everything connected. For lightning protection you can get some good heavy duty battery cables and clip one end to the shrouds, and a couple of other locations that have high points and drop the other end in the water. This may not stop a strike but will help divert the electricity to the water for the most part. Of course there is always the chance it will get into the boat, and then the electronics will be fried, but with the battery cables you stand a better chance than not.
Wohooo good luck! Changing my engine was one of the BEST decisions during the past years! Looking back I wish I had been brave enough to go hybrid…but hey…🤷🏼♀️
Seadog got me onto your channel and i am binging my way through all your episodes....i shed a tear in this one and maybe a few others 😂. What you are doing is amazing and fills me with inspiration. My sailboat journey is only just beginning but i can only hope to fill my sails with as much enthusiasm as you have. All the best💖
Fire it up!
Even if you might not agree Nike, I absolutely love that you didnt buy a fresher boat. It maked the best sailingvlog content ever. Looking forward to see you getting more confident on the water in the future with your new engine. With the experience you have gained and the toolinventory on Karl these days i cant see why you shouldnt. Wish you easy days with Joana the coming weeks to get some rest. You both have deserved it!
Hey Johannes, no, actually I totally agree on that. A lot of people often ask me if I did not wish I had bought a boat that was in a better shape. But I always say "no", because I was able to learn so much through Karl that otherwise I never would have learnt. Yes, the journey turned out a little different than I imagined, but I acually have (most of the time) really enjoyed those fixing days. Sometimes, when I have a week or ten days that are trouble free, I look around and think "hey, what's hapening, this is feeling so weird, something big must be coming up" ;). It will be interesting to see what the future will bring, now that Karl is more or less "ready". Of course there will always be maintanance, but maybe not as much work as in the first four years...Wel will see... Ahoy, Nike
Not that you need my validation, but I’m very proud of you. I love to watch you ladies doing what most women wouldn’t think possible without a man to do it for them. You’re an inspiration to women everywhere! My daughter has a great role model in my wife, but I also want her to grow up with your indomitable spirit and can-do attitude. Thank you for sharing! Oh, and I’m glad to see you have the warp drive fixed 😊
It was actually really emotional to hear Big Red start up for the first time. This is the kind of hardcore sailing vloggs I like to watch. Can't wait to see you go by motor.
hehe, well, that's how we came back to Panama...but those days sailing without an engine in turning and really low winds in combination with crazy tidal currents did make me apreciate having a working engine again at some point ;). Ahoy, Nike
An impressive achievement and you should both feel proud. If I understand correctly your achieved alignment between coupling faces was 0,2,0,2 (in thousandths of an inch) which is good👍 In real time you should recheck at say 3 months then after a further 6 months as new mounts will ‘settle’. Thereafter inspect the mounts and recheck alignment annually. Your mounts will last longer if you can keep them free of Diesel Fuel. Well done 👍
aqwesome achievment girls..so happy for you , getting great results after all your hard work, u are great, now if only carl brooke could do something like this, u are a breath of fresh air after frollowing his channel, excellent job girls, if u were my daughers i would be VERY proud..
Heya!!! Are you coming to the San Blas before crossing the Canal? It's a MUST! Will be there the whole month of January, so if you do come there then it's a MUST as well that you come by for a drink on Joana!!! Then I can give you first hand info about Panama City anchorages ;) Ahoy, Nike
Congrats on cranking on the first try!!!!! There's really something to be said for an engine compartment with room for two people and an engine! Makes it a lot easier to get work done.
I don't know what i am more proud of, The fact you did an awesome job with the conversion or used the word engine throughout and didn't once call it a motor ;p Well done! (on the conversion).
Loved the opening segment, sure got me laughing. Looked like you two were doing shots of motor oil from the cap, LOL. Keep up the hard work, almost time to drift away. Happy New Year.....

No, from the engine it self there is a part insulation and where that is ending then there is a metal piece with the ribbed hose with the unnessary bend.
I love seeing you use a ratchet on the hose clamps. Just a heads up, it looks like automotive hose clamps which will rust through and fail a lot sooner than marine ones. Just carry some back ups. Was so great to see the "Red Lady" fire up!
Like you, (I suspect) I believe a Crescent (and pliers) are way over used and mostly for emergency use only, unless the goal is to round off the heads so they can't be removed.
love your videos.. I really like that you tackle all the jobs on a boat. replacing an engine would normally be a 'mans' job.. what can I say ..great job...I hope to meet you some day out there on the water sailing..we are about 18months from casting off the lines if all goes well..

As someone who has done this work, you folks did much better than most boatyards would have done. I remember Panama rains. Waiting to transit. Yech.
Thanks Pete. It was quite the challenge and a bit nerve wracking to be honest. It did stress me quite a bit that a lot of money was at stake if I mess up 🤣. But so far…motor is still running so can’t have been that bad 😁
So awesome, I love the way you MacGyver so many things. Smart, resourceful and loving life. May all you seas be calm!
Master sailor and mechanic! Love your adventures. Hello from a very cold Canada.
Getting ready to install a Beta 25 in my Catalina 36. Thank you for these videos! Super informative, and quite moving, actually. I teared up a bit when the engine started up for the first time. What a feeling that must have been!
Good luck with ur installation 👍
Fantastic job, ladies, with the new engine installation. You are an inspiration to all us yachtsmen and yachtswomen everywhere! Fair winds and following seas and no more thunderstorms, please👍💕
belated, Congratulations, Nike. You must have just about busted your sides with joy when Karl's new engine started right up.
From one who has been there ... congratulations that is a major major accomplishment. And I totally get the emotional aspect of that first start up. Now that you have taken on and conquered what is the greatest fear of most boat owners you need fear nothing. You can do it all. Great job!
The look on your face when the engine first fired was truely delightful to see! 😳 Think I'll go watch it again!

I am impressed. Well, in awe really.
And Karl is a lucky fellow.
As my grandfather used to say ... smart work always pays! Congrats on the new heart (very red) of KARL :)
Once again you blew my mind. So impressed by you and Maria. You ROCK!
You are truly inspirational with this task of changing the engine
You're the most resourceful, determined couple of sailors I've never met. Congrats and keep the videos coming.
You guys are great nontraditional role models, most men I know couldn't have done what you have done nor would have they tried. Proud to say that my daughter and a grand daughter are made from the same mold as you.
Great series of videos. Brilliant job, ladies. Loved your face when trying the ignition for the first time. Inspirational!!!!
The look on your face when it started is everything 😊❣

After a job like that words don’t really express my admiration. Brilliant simply brilliant

I'm a mechanic an I'm amazed on what you do with so little!!
Very nice to see all that hard work pay off! Spectacular job Nike! Bravo!
Awesome work Nike and Maria. Editor's run-up to engine start was a nice touch.
You "little girls" are exactly what I hope for my 7 grandaughters. Smart, independent, and fun.
Please show us how you lowered the engine, used your slide rail system , it was all so clever!
Nike, I loved the look of happiness on your face when Bug Red started up. Great job.
WHAT A BABE . you are an amazing woman .. i am totally impressed with your boat skills
Simply brilliant ladies. You made something that is very daunting to most of us look 'doable'. Thanks for the inspiration.
What a great great job you did there!!! I almost had tears come up when I saw your look as the engine started for the first time!!!! I'm happy I found your channel :)

Maria seems like such a good friend , positivity attracts her and she spreads it in buckets
She is indeed!
I have no words to say but WOWWW.... So happy for you guys.

What a joy to see your smiles once Big Red fired up... great stuff!!!
Nice work. Even after hundreds of engine rebiilds the first start is still an awesome experience. You should be very proud of yourself.
Nike and Joana you are awesome engineers, congratulations on your hard-earned success.
So happy for you. I have my trials coming soon.
Wohooo good luck! Changing my engine was one of the BEST decisions during the past years! Looking back I wish I had been brave enough to go hybrid…but hey…🤷🏼♀️
The engine install looks great. Congratulations on all your fine work!

excellent work! The moment you fired it up, I could feel your relief and excitement. I find your videos very inspiring!
I love sensing that you consider inanimate parts/systems - treated with care - as having a soul. NICELY DONE!
Karl is looking pretty good! Great job, and as always thank you for sharing your adventures.

This is an absolutely amazing vid of your own Determination to get things right, Be it Trial and error or otherwise. Very well done Niki !
Your videos keep me enthusiastic for my projects.

hehe, well, that's how we came back to Panama...but those days sailing without an engine in turning and really low winds in combination with crazy tidal currents did make me apreciate having a working engine again at some point ;).
Ahoy, Nike
Huge congrats! 2018 will be the best year ever for you! I am very happy for you, Nike! Love from Norway!
Success!! Hour channel is such a inspiration for determination, steadfastness. Not quitting.
A few capfuls later, a stern tube adjustment or two and voila a working engine 😂 watching it back it’s still amazing what you girls achieved! ❤️
;) Exactly, Karl loves his stern tube fixings, hehehe! Miss you guys! Will be nice to get the Chuffed episodes out soon and reminise a bit :)
Love your Videos. Congrats for your working motor and the great work you did!
The ladies represent...great job on the installation I was well impressed.

will try to keep up with that :). Don't wanna mess up all that hard work ;). Thx for the advise!
Ahoy, Nike
We've also had our shares of "living in the engine room" and know how tough it can be. Well done!!! Thanks for another awesome episode.
You are awesome, pure class, I specially liked the way you talked to the gentleman machinist in Panama!
You girls are amazing! Well done, you are an inspiration!
... I've never seen a girl so happy to hear an engine fire up for the first time ...
aqwesome achievment girls..so happy for you , getting great results after all your hard work, u are great, now if only carl brooke could do something like this, u are a breath of fresh air after frollowing his channel, excellent job girls, if u were my daughers i would be VERY proud..
ya just increased the value of Karl 1000 percent! priceless experience too....
I really admire you and your ability to do everything possible yourself.
Love you two, congratulations and a job well done.
Better late than never. I found myself smiling for you as you got Carl up and running again. Best of luck!
Probably should have done it before. But then I would not have learnt half as much about diesel engine trouble shooting 😂
Loved the build up to engine start. Im coming though the canal in January, looking for advice on anchorages near the city.
Heya!!! Are you coming to the San Blas before crossing the Canal? It's a MUST! Will be there the whole month of January, so if you do come there then it's a MUST as well that you come by for a drink on Joana!!! Then I can give you first hand info about Panama City anchorages ;)
Ahoy, Nike
Good job ladies. Now as long as you keep up on the maintenance that engine should last a very very long time...
Looks to me as though you passed your Engineman A School with flying colors. You are now a proud Snipe in the finest of Naval tradition.
Congrats on cranking on the first try!!!!! There's really something to be said for an engine compartment with room for two people and an engine! Makes it a lot easier to get work done.
I don't know what i am more proud of, The fact you did an awesome job with the conversion or used the word engine throughout and didn't once call it a motor ;p
Well done! (on the conversion).
Loved the opening segment, sure got me laughing. Looked like you two were doing shots of motor oil from the cap, LOL. Keep up the hard work, almost time to drift away.
Happy New Year.....
You had some great planning and did a great job! I think you will have a great motor to power your way for a long while now!
So much perseverance I love your channel
I am totally amazed at what you have accomplished. As a very intelligent beautiful women on your own, mostly, with little help, it is incredible all of the talents you have. I was surprised that you lack the task of soldering a terminal lug onto the end of a heavy gauge battery cable, but you deserve credit for all that you have done and your persistence to carry on. I don’t Understand the name of your boat?
Plietsch!
Ahoy, Nike
I can only imagine the weight that lifted off your shoulders when you had that engine buttoned up.
Glad to see Karl will be back together again!
Love the Betas. Glad we installed ours, and I’m sure you are, too!
Nike, you did it ! ! ! Reach rtight over your shoulder and pat yourself on the back. You are wonderful.
Happiness is a job well done ............Good Job Brian from London
Great job well done, can't to see your next ventures and love your necklace. 🤗
wow, I'm jealous of the engine access you have! Great job.
always amazed at your technical ability.....very impressive.
Great job - girl power. So excited for you!
Awesome job! You are rightfully proud. It would have been okay to cry in relief when you cranked it up :)
hehe, I think you missed that tear that sneaked out of my eye ;)
Ahoy, Nike
WooHooo Congrats to you. and for all your very hard work!!!
No, from the engine it self there is a part insulation and where that is ending then there is a metal piece with the ribbed hose with the unnessary bend.
Thank you for posting. Congratulations!!
I love seeing you use a ratchet on the hose clamps. Just a heads up, it looks like automotive hose clamps which will rust through and fail a lot sooner than marine ones. Just carry some back ups. Was so great to see the "Red Lady" fire up!
Yeah, but how about the "Crescent" (adjustable) wrench use on the shaft coupler? It helps to have two of every fixed-size wrench.
Like you, (I suspect) I believe a Crescent (and pliers) are way over used and mostly for emergency use only, unless the goal is to round off the heads so they can't be removed.
I'm totally impressed by your skills. Good Job
love your videos.. I really like that you tackle all the jobs on a boat. replacing an engine would normally be a 'mans' job.. what can I say ..great job...I hope to meet you some day out there on the water sailing..we are about 18months from casting off the lines if all goes well..
I wish you all the best for untying the lines soon!!! See you out there ine day :)!
Ahoy, Nike
Well done you must be so happy having a engine again best of luck for 2018
That's amazing! Kudos. Happy New Year!
