Agree 💯%. I don't usually like every song on an album on the first listen. It usually takes a few listens for some of the songs to grow on me. _THIS_ one blew me away on first listen. _EVERY_ song is _FIRE!!_
This debut album is what put them on the map, kind of like boston. I mean, it just sounded so new and so cool and it was everywhere, at least in my circle of friends. We all had the albums or the 8-track sets, it got played at parties, at the park, at the lake, at the swimming pool, everywhere. And every song on it is just killer. This song however was a huge hit. Ain't talkin bout love, which I think you've done, is also from this album. Check out any or all of the others, you will not be disappointed.
Song brings back great memories! I was standing next to my car with friends in our high school parking lot one sunny afternoon when another student pulled up next to us with an unfamiliar tune blasting from his 8-track stereo speakers. That tune was Jamie's Crying. Had not yet heard of Van Halen, and I was instantly blown away and hypnotized! Eddie's unique style and guitar riffs and DLR's lead vocal are fantastic, but Michael Anthony's prominent backup vocal on this track (and many others) is the perfect complement and absolutely superb! What an era for outstanding debut albums! Boston (Aug 76), Foreigner (Mar 77), VH (Feb 78), The Cars (June 78) to name a few.
Following a garage band I knew, they got a chance to play the Whiskey a go-go. They were opening for another pretty much unknown band called Van Halen. It was 1975. Three years b4 this album was released. 😮
Not only is Eddie Van Halen a top 3 Guitarist of all time, Eddie’s rhythm guitar parts are part of what made VH special and EVH always played within the structure of the Song. EVH never overpowered the Song
Couldn't agree more. His rhythms are fire, and for the most part, better than his leads, which are great, but it seems like he's more interested in flying up & down the neck, than he is about making it fit the song.
@ 2 Guitarist’s at different points points in time changed Guitar playing from that point on. Hendrix 1st the EVH in 1978. He’s top 3 in most conversions. Top 1 to me
The david lee roth days of the band were my favorite, there's just nobody like him lol need to check out his song "Yankee rose", great reaction as always
I read in Dave’s book “Crazy From The Heat” during the vocal studio recording he was having a little trouble nailing this one down. They asked Dave you sound different what you do??? Dave said, I was extra careful this week with getting rest, watched the diet, and not too much smoking, etc. The producer ordered Dave a cheeseburger and a soda, then lit up a doobie for Dave. After the burger, soda pop and doobie, he nailed the vocal in one take! 😂
I still remember driving in my Firebird Formula in 1978 hearing this on the radio for the first time and immediately fell in the love with the guitar riff!!!
From beginning to end this album is SICK! I remember hearing this when it came out and I played this all day! I always wanted Edward’s hair (I have dark hair) and Dave’s vocal! This was sampled for Tone-Loc’s “Wild Thing”!
Well said Sam…., your analysis of guitar players and their style of guitar and sound is on point !!!! You’ve come a long way, each guitarist is the heart and soul of their Rock/Metal bands. 🎸🎸🎸 E.V.H. Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Adam Jones, Angus/Malcolm, Blackmore, K. Richards, Iommi, D.Murray/A.Smith, K.K. Downing/G.Tipton Perry/Hamilton, Gilmour, etc.
Their best album for me and a game changer in Rock Music history. Another from it you should try is the Atomic Punk. Saw them open for Black Sabbath in 1978, I was blown into the next dimension by both bands but Van Halen had a new vibrancy and white Hendrix vibe with Eddie. Then Iommi started War Pigs... Great show! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎶🔥
This is my all time favorite Van Halen song by FAR. I didn't hear it when new and first heard it when I was at a party when i was 17 in 1986 and it was on play from the record. Ive loved it since. And this came out 9 years earlier in 78. David was great dont get me wrong.. I LOVED his Van Halen times and songs but I find I prefer Sammy to Dave later on. Both were great and both fit Van Helen and both had their own Van Halen sound and times...and place in my opinion. I still blast this full max volume in my Mustang today. Strange as I think this a very party sounding song. Thats where I first heard it anways
I Love-Love this song! It’s about a guy, “wanting” her, & she is saying No. so, they broke up. And, she’s sad. As for as Writing him a letter, but she knows what that’ll get her. She means that if he came back he would still want the same thing. As far as the “one night stand”. She knew he only wanted a one night stand, & then be gone. And, the part about “Love is more than that”. She is saying she wants a relationship that is complete.
This was always one of my favorite VH songs. ♥ It's off their self-titled debut album, which was fabulous! Please do yourselves a favor and check out more of it!
I dated a girl named Jamie for awhile and my kids didn't like her. I then dated a lady named Trish and when this song played on the radio, she sang along but didn't know my ex's name. My kids both smiled and Trish thought they were laughing at her bad singing. It was hilarious.
I had totally forgotten about this song. Had a lot of radio play. I think you are onto something about the difference in David Lee Roth's vocals. He was a front man performer where he really could shine when music videos became more popular. He could sing, but his stage performance and acrobatics may have been more at the forefront later.
For more of an actual rock ballad, kind of, lol, from this incredible first album, check out Little Dreamer. And yeah Michael Anthony's bass guitar playing on this is just fierce. Perfect really hard rocking dance Groove but then check out some of the finesse stuff he is doing mid to late in the song.
Album chock full of memorable songs. Even the track called by many as a throwaway song - The Little Dreamer - isn’t half bad, really. The 2 covers are classics too
Aerosmith's "Janie's got a g*n" was '94's throw-back to Van Halen's '84's 'Jamie's Cryin' & L.A. Gun's '88 "Ballad of Jayne": 3 power ballads of sim' tragic ladies!💔
VAN HALEN - "" Intruder/Pretty Woman " Also/ SAMMY HAGAR - "" Heavy Metal "" from 1981 he was part of a ROCK METAL Band in 1973 called MONTROSE - "" Rock Candy "" (Babe) 1973 AUDIO VERSION and also "":Space Station #5... 1973 AUDIO VERSION SAMMY'S VOCALS are Amazing & the music is Rockin' and Heavy like early Metal Music 🎸
My favorite album by them because it’s such a killer debut. Please do Ice Cream Man from it. Classic Dave. You need to check them out live with Dave from back in the day and then check out Jim Dandy by Black Oak Arkansas and you would see his stage presence inspiration.
Saw Van Halen album fair warning in 82 just turned 16 it was awesome went in my 74 nova then I seen them later on with Sammy I like Van Halen with diamond Dave and the red rocker Sammy Hagar you should check out Sammy he has a massive catalog by himself and with other bands he was in a band called Montrose sing rock candy my favorite album by Sammy his his album standing Hampton Sammy is a damn rocker can shred the guitar as well
FYI... Playing the guitar part for the chorus is SOOOOOOO COMPLICATED, AND HARD! I think this was the second single they had! I believe the first one was You really got me, which, on the album, immediately followed eruption!
That first Van Halen album was fire! 🔥🔥🔥 When this album dropped, everyone was like "Wait, what? Who is THAT!??!?!" Eddie was special.
Gene Simmons had an ear for talent.
The second album was just as good.
Right?? IMO, the best VH is the DLR Van Halen. Obviously there is no VH without Eddie or Alex.
@@matteoedwardes2876 Agreed....Micheal Anthony as well IMO.....never the same without him....
Agree 💯%. I don't usually like every song on an album on the first listen. It usually takes a few listens for some of the songs to grow on me. _THIS_ one blew me away on first listen. _EVERY_ song is _FIRE!!_
Jamie’s Cryin’ and Runnin’ With The Devil was played on repeat when this album came out.
Loved it then, love it now.
This debut album is what put them on the map, kind of like boston. I mean, it just sounded so new and so cool and it was everywhere, at least in my circle of friends. Blizzard of Oz is in there as well I hope. lol
The production value of this Album is off the charts! When this came out nobody heard this style of polished hard rocking "Rock" Great Album!

Can't go wrong with Van Halen
Phil, I was totally expecting you to recognize the opening drum fill and main guitar riff from Tone Loc's "Wild Thing".
I'm surprised as well.
I think Sam would love David Lee Roth’s Ice cream Man. It’s a must for all the ladies..❤❤❤
Back in the day.. we didn't need cable. Internet..cell phones.. we had badass music.
Following a garage band I knew, they got a chance to play the Whiskey a go-go. They were opening for another pretty much unknown band called Van Halen. It was 1975. Three years b4 this album was released. 😮
I seen them in 77(I believe) in Atlanta Ga. Open up for Black Sabbath. One very fun night and they was a bunch of us that night. Party!
Im from that era of Hotlanta & seen many many great bands, I was raised in Covington just east of ATL
Dirty LA rock and roll and the introduction to the guitar god EDDIE VAN HALEN!!!!
THERES AB0UT 50 GUYS BEF0RE HIM THATS BETTER, D0 A IiTTIE RESEARCH!!!!

Sammy Hagar has said that EVH was the best rhythm player in the world. I believe it is a combo of his lead and rhythm that make him the best ever.
@ Absolutely
No 1 for me bro.
@ 2 Guitarist’s at different points points in time changed Guitar playing from that point on. Hendrix 1st the EVH in 1978. He’s top 3 in most conversions. Top 1 to me

This is my favorite Van Halen Song.
'Little Dreamer' is a must hear. Cheers.
One of my faves!.... Saw Halen for their first album tour in '78 opening for Sabbath... killer!
My fav song from Van Halen! One of their first songs that goes unnoticed. Thank you for the Reaction❤
Listen to Feel Your Love!! One of there best songs ever!!
Dave said in his book this vocal gave him fits in the studio and he went outside and shot some hoops and smoked a joint went back in and nailed it!
Their best album by far. I remember when it first came out. "Who are these guys". There sound was so unique at the time. Great reaction.
From beginning to end this album is SICK! I remember hearing this when it came out and I played this all day! I always wanted Edward’s hair (I have dark hair) and Dave’s vocal! This was sampled for Tone-Loc’s “Wild Thing”!

Never heard anything like this when this album came out. One of the greatest debut albums of all time for sure.
It's so easy to get obsessed with Van Halen!
Great Song
From an Absolutely Amazing Game Changing Album. Lucky enough to have see Van Halen Live in 1979 with the Frontman’s Frontman David Lee Roth
Hang em high was a guitar masterpiece because no other guitarist could play it. It was unique to him. The drums and Dave Swag
My personal favorite is " Dance the Night Away!"
This is my all time favorite Van Halen song by FAR. I didn't hear it when new and first heard it when I was at a party when i was 17 in 1986 and it was on play from the record. Ive loved it since. Them 70’s were something else! Disco and heavy metal ruled the air waves! We were living it up back then!✌🏻😎
"....and it sounds like Jamie's having some regrets." Hilariously on point.
I Love-Love this song! It’s about a guy, “wanting” her, & she is saying No. so, they broke up. And, she’s sad. As for as Writing him a letter, but she knows what that’ll get her. Check out the guitars in "And The Cradle Will Rock". My all time favorite of Van Halen!
One of my favorites from the DLR era 🤘🔥
Anything off the debut album is great!
Wow Phil, what a great Radio voice you have or narrations too. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Michigan usa
For me the first six Roth albums represent the greatest rock band of all time, period.
Fun fact: Tone Loc sampled Eddie's guitar in the chorus on his song "Wild Thing".
.....and the opening drum fill.
@aronp7097 yes I forgot
This was always one of my favorite VH songs. ♥ It's off their self-titled debut album, which was fabulous! Please do yourselves a favor and check out more of it!
When this album came out you could hear the jaws of millions of guitar players hitting the floor wondering what the hell they just heard!!
If your gonna be obsessed with any music, none better than The Mighty Van Halen. The Roth years of course 😂🎸
This has always been my favorite VH song!
Great song...well done!!!
This song was sampled in the smash rap hit “Wild Thing” for Tone-Loc in 1988.
"Saw" These guy's in '78 ... Open'd 4 "ChEaP tRiCk" ..."Hager" was next, so needless to say I got a VH t-shirt next day !!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Closing in on 200k subscribers . . . way to go!
I saw them in concert back in the day. (I'm old... mid 60's)
I dated a girl named Jamie for awhile and my kids didn't like her. I then dated a lady named Trish and when this song played on the radio, she sang along but didn't know my ex's name. My kids both smiled and Trish thought they were laughing at her bad singing. It was hilarious.
The Mighty Van Halen
This was a song they wrote in the studio. It wasn't part of their previous repertoire.
David Lee Roth sings 'Ice Cream Man', check it out....
Michaels bass and back up vocals were VH's secret weapon
You guys got a new set 👍😎
I had totally forgotten about this song. Had a lot of radio play. I think you are onto something about the difference in David Lee Roth's vocals. He was a front man performer where he really could shine when music videos became more popular. He could sing, but his stage performance and acrobatics may have been more at the forefront later.
melancholic! . . .
The guitar 🎸 riff was sampled in Tone Locs Wild Thing
For more of an actual rock ballad, kind of, lol, from this incredible first album, check out Little Dreamer.
And yeah Michael Anthony's bass guitar playing on this is just fierce. Perfect really hard rocking dance Groove but then check out some of the finesse stuff he is doing mid to late in the song.
From PASADENA, CALIFORNIA!
My ultimate favorite band you guys did a great reaction. Could you please do? I’m the one off this album thanks. Have a good one guys.
From the Third album “Women and Children Fisrt” do “Could This Be Magic?”. Acoustic tune that is just the fun side of Van Halen!
Gun's '88 "Ballad of Jayne":
3 power ballads of sim' tragic ladies!💔
If you truly want to hear something special by Van Halen then I strongly recommend I'm The One, it will blow your minds
Definitely more VH. Qi suggest
Run Around
I'll Wait
Dancin in the Streets
Right Now
You guys have to do a reaction to their music video for the song Poundcake.
💎 Dave 👑 Edward VH 🎸🔥
My favorite album by them because it’s such a killer debut. Please do Ice Cream Man from it. Classic Dave. You need to check them out live with Dave from back in the day and then check out Jim Dandy by Black Oak Arkansas and you would see his stage presence inspiration.
First Albumn is 🔥....Next is... Running With The Devil❤
Saw Van Halen album fair warning in 82 just turned 16 it was awesome went in my 74 nova then I seen them later on with Sammy I like Van Halen with diamond Dave and the red rocker Sammy Hagar you should check out Sammy he has a massive catalog by himself and with other bands he was in a band called Montrose sing rock candy my favorite album by Sammy his his album standing Hampton Sammy is a damn rocker can shred the guitar as well
Two words: Mean Street! DO it!
Yall should check out feel your love tonighr!
You have to listen to I'm the One from VH's first album!
Gets my vote as the most hardcore tune on that entire album.
Mikey's back up vocals make VH what they are.
You gotta listen to more of VH1.!!
Mean Street...another song you should do.
Like Boston's debut, you just need to hit every song on this album.
A very different but great tune from this album is "Ice Cream Man" You will get the drift of what kind of ice cream Dave sells.
Have you reacted to Runnin with the devil? I don’t feel that party thing in DLR. It’s pretty gritty.
Please, please, finally react to the cheeky/suggestive Ice Cream Man from the debut album. It is bluesy and rock in one.
Most reactors mention the Tone Loc song when reacting to this song.
Harmony master Michael Anthony
If u haven’t yet check out pound cake. Edward is a master on this one.
Listen to Little Dreamer off the same album.
Wild Thang (Tone Loc)
Your next song should be (Ice-cream Man),you'll love it!!!
Tone Loc sampled this in his song Wild Thing.
This whole record is amazing and for me the best song is Atomic Punk. But you could pick any other song and I wouldn't be able to argue.
FYI... Playing the guitar part for the chorus is SOOOOOOO COMPLICATED, AND HARD! I think this was the second single they had! I believe the first one was You really got me, which, on the album, immediately followed eruption!
😭😭😭
Check out Junna, Through the Fire and Flame, Dragon Force, drum cover if you want a blast of pure happiness
If you haven't done Little Dreamer, do it next. Badas* song from a badas* album!
Good one this time.
the rapper tone loc sample this tune check it out it's pretty good !
The song is titled "Wild Thing."
As a kid, I think I sang every incorrect version of this title, but mostly "Jay Meets Brian." 😅
Part of this great song was sampled for Tone Loc's "Wild Thing"!!! Compare the two!!!
Love the doomsday Bunker effect 🔥
Must listen to Ice cream man!
