"Have to forgive" OMFFFG. As a trauma survivor, forgiving is amazing if someone owns up to what they did, accept your anger and agree to move on. It's impossible if the person that harmed you refuses to admit responsibility, or behave like a decent human being. Anger, however righteous, is harmful to the one that feels it. Sometimes it is inevitable, as anger is still better than denial. Now that I saw the clip: this is horrifying. Therapy, years of therapy, not a crash diet, please.
@@ellauglov8891 the concept of forgiveness can be helpful IF the person is ready to do so and it is their free choice. It can create a feeling of regaining control, getting out of the victim narrative and creating space for your own personal development and leaving the incident behind without freeing the person who caused the trauma from the consequences of their action. However, the act of not forgiving and intentionally saying “I do not want to forgive” instead of I’m not able to can lead to regaining autonomy and self efficacy as well. Taking the anger and using it as a tool of knowing what you want and how you want to be treated by people and as freeing motivation can also be a way to cope with trauma and it is therapeutically speaking valid. Take your time and do not feel forced! (Sorry if my grammar is off, English is my second language)
@@ellauglov8891 I'm not a therapist, but I have experience with trauma. You can reach forgiveness - as I have in some cases - or not, as I haven't in others. Let's see if I can explain. Say someone chops your arm off. In one case the person admits they mishandled a tool and it has cost you an arm, they accept their responsibility and ask if you could ever forgive them. In another case the person turns to you and says "Oh, you got a booboo, too bad." In a third case the person flees never to be seen again. You will be angry anyway, after all, you have lost something precious. In the first case, you were validated by the person who hurt you, on the others you weren't. If you can't "forgive", or resolve that anger, it tends to get misdirected at the world and make your own life harder. It's like your base level of grumpy goes up long term and you can't appreciate the nice people, the ones that are trying to help because you mistrust everything. That's where therapy comes in, to help you understand that your anger is valid, but for you to try and lower your general distrust. That's how it has worked for me. I hope I was able to help.
I gained 20 pounds after being assaulted. If someone ever told me that the only thing that’ll help me would be forgiveness, that would be the last time I ever spoke to them. Holy shit how upsetting.
I am not trying to take away from your experience, but for me at least, the forgiveness is for you. You are forgiving someone who doesn't deserve it because it's going to help you move on. In my experience it's empowering. You're taking back the power. *NOT DEFENDING THE NUTRITUONIST IN THE VIDEO*

As a therapist, hearing someone be told they need to forgive their rapist in order to heal made me want to cry. That's one of the most damaging things I've ever heard anyone say to a survivor. For anyone wondering, you can absolutely process your trauma and live a meaningful and wonderful and incredible life while forever hating the guts of the person who abused you. Forgiveness is important to some people, but not a requirement for healing for all people. We're all different and if you can't see a future where forgiveness is something you can achieve, that doesn't mean you won't ever be well.
Thank you, this is something I still struggle with. When my granddad died I opened up about what happened, then spent years apologising to his dead soul that I told. Eventually I was told that just because someone dies, it doesn't make them an angel (he was bad, death doesn't erase that). Now that my father did some messed up shite I can't forgive him, and everyone thinks I should (the "he's still your dad" comments make me see red). Good to know from a professional that I don't have to forgive to move on.
@Bluegrey Skies that entirely depends on the individual, but achieve is perhaps the wrong word. For some people forgiveness is very important to their healing process and that's okay, just not by any means a requirement.
Wow. No one has ever told me this. It’s always, forgive, look to the future. Kinda different but I told my therapist how me and my mom get into fights sometimes and all she focused on was how my mom felt. And it just rubbed me the wrong way. I get hurt by my mom and I’m supposed to put myself in her shoes? She also told me to go on dates to get over my ex. And idk. Fuck I need a new therapist
I read Khloe’s book and in it she says she started her fitness journey slowly. She started using the elliptical for less than an hour a few days a week and eventually worked up to using the elliptical every day. THEN she started doing more intense workouts, so it’s strange to me she had all these contestants working out like athletes their first day. I get that it’s a tv show, and they want results fast but this is unrealistic and she knows that because she didn’t start out doing the most in the gym.
Wouldn't it be amazing if we still watched it if people lost 5 kg in 3 months and you would barely see a difference, but learn more about health, sustainable weight loss etc.?
Sometimes I can't even recognize her on those pictures. It seems like she has self-esteem issues and tries hard to "look better". So she shouldn't be teaching people how to "feel good and loose weight" at the first place
@@katetempleton9669 i have the same "issue" as her except i'm the fat and short of a tall family and not the tall one in a short family. my solution was keep somewhat of a distance from them when they are toxic and shallow as hell. they are my blood family, but i don't have to endure their toxicity. i don't have to live by their standards. but khloe at 36 is still trying so hard to fit this stupid restrictive mold and it's very sad.
Right? I will not excuse nor forgive the person who did that to me. I have the right to tell them to go to hell and never forgive them. I'm more internally satisfied thinking that they will drown in guilt (even though they don't know or care tbh) than to excuse the immoral actions

Lets just make this one point clear. Khloe has access to surgeries, chefs, and opportunities that your average joe doesn't. Her condescending tones and attitude infuriate me. No miss K. this diet and work out you put everyone through isn't what made you thin. Your privilege did. And I doubt you keep up a perfect life style that you try to immolate. This is biggest looser meets a new level of vanity. This show is for people who are brain washed into the myth that the Kardashians are 'just like us'. I'll never take diet advice, skin care advice, or even a breath mint from a family that's never seen a day of 'normal life'.
Eh that’s not really fair. Khloe has resources but so do plenty of people who are overweight (ex: there are tons of overweight celebs and billionaires). What she’s trying to do here is give people resources like trainers, food deliveries and even cosmetic procedures if that makes people feel better about themselves.

That's what I was thinking. If these are the best of the best for trainers, I'll take someone mediocre. Yikes. You don't have to hurl your biscuits to have an effective workout and encouraging people to let it out us just - again, yikes. Yikes, yikes, yikes.
When I told my dietician that I was struggling to follow the plan we made, she helped me adjust it for mental health complications I was having at the time. She didn't tell me, "Goodbye," she worked with me to find ways to get back on track.
Also, she basically threatened her with bloodwork. I am a lab tech and was so mad at Khloe for her misinformation about how your food “shows” up in your blood work.
The manipulative language that Khloe Kardashian is pulling off in that one clip is really next level... That the participants need to stick with their insane routine because "it will change their life forever" and that somehow they are "really lucky to be there"... "I can just find another person to fill your place"... Kardashian is not charitable, she is just milking money and narcissistic supply from these people and from all of us watching.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this sound like something an abusive girlfriend/boyfriend would say? "You're lucky to be here" = "You're lucky you have me." "I can find another person to fill your place" = " I can replace you with someone new"
Exaclty. Maybe she really did want to help the contestants because she also used to be insecure about her own body, but I highly think that she was blinded by profits and underprioritized the health of the contestants
Wow... wow so forgive someone who sexually assaulted you to help you lose weight? That is really obnoxious and Abby is right- that poor woman needs to talk to a professional to help her with that. Many of us who have had this type of trauma suffer from various types of eating disorders and mental issues from not only being assaulted, but the stigma and how others treat us after. I hope that Abby can do a video with a mental health specialist and sort of expound on the connection with trauma and eating disorders (binge eating, severely restricting, purging, and otherwise).
The way they spoke to that young lady just broke my heart. Like come on now potatoes and rice are fine foods to eat. she will get to a point where she will be ashamed for putting food in her mouth.
I've eaten rice, pasta, bread, potatoes & dairy products for years and still maintain a good figure. People constantly ask me what's my secret and here it is. Restrictions are not the answer. I got a package of oreos two weeks ago & opened it yesterday, ate two oreos & put the bag back in the fridge. If i was on some crazy diet that wouldn't allow me to eat cookies, i would've finished those bad boys in one sitting and felt guilty afterwards.
rice has extremely high calories so obviously if you want to lose weight you have to change your lifestyle. what planet do you live on? or do you accomplish your goals by dreaming and hoping??

Khloe got away with getting this show because her family is rich and connected in the industry. She is talentless just like the rest of the family but she need an income. TV and being a celebrity based off of her family name is all she knows.

So these people go from being ridiculed in their everyday lives for their weight to being ridiculed on this show for not losing enough weight? Plus, the torturous workouts, sometimes to the point of vomiting?! This is insane! How is this supposed to be helpful???
As a therapist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, we do NOT !!! Ever encourage a client to forgive someone who has caused them Trauma. This can actually be incredibly damaging. They need to be able to feel how they feel and realize that forgiveness is an option, yes, they can still live a meaningful life even if they choose not to forgive

If you’re heavier, then losing weight will naturally make you feel better overall. I think that was the concept behind a “revenge body”. It’s just extreme on this show to sell it.
In some cases I, a layperson, would guess that hot body will try to lose even more weight until this uncaring person cares, which will be never - who knows how far they might take it
I'm a college cross country runner. It took me YEARS to safely be able to workout for an hour or more every day. I only workout for more than an hour one day a week. Many people in my sport think its normal to throw up from working out, but it is absolutely NOT OKAY. I hate seeing the way they make people work out on this show.
That "forgiving your abuser" scene literally made me cry. 1) you are *not* a therapist 2) what a disgusting way to talk to someone who just shared something so intimate with you 3) if they have "the best of the best" team, get her mental health treatment and CBT You do NOT need to forgive your abuser until you're ready to... and you may never be but don't EVER tell someone that is how they need to move past their entire world being shattered and losing all sense of safety and security. They should be sued for that.
Revenge body is very disturbing. Thank you for creating content like this. We need to be more vocal about harmful content and not let it become normalized or accepted.
I always assumed the show was harmless having not watched it but now...good god. This show needs to be canceled and participants need to be issued a sincere apology for what they endured. This is not okay.
Wow, I've never seen the Revenge Body show. However, from the clips shared, as a counsellor, I am truly alarmed. I'm appreciating your videos and your common sense approach to food and health. Thank you for making them.

"if I don't see numbers I'm gonna have to drop you", just a couple of minutes in and it's already disgusting. As someone with disordered eating habits I already put so much of my worth on numbers (on the scale, clothing size, measurements). I can't even imagine what I'd do if someone said this to me, but it wouldn't be healthy. Just hearing Khloe say that to that girl made me feel even more guilty than I already do for not losing my quarantine weight fast enough
I have been struggling with my weight for more than 15 years. And I am getting thirty next month. I still have disordered eating habits - currently, binging. If someone told me such a thing, I would have probably set my self into a starving mode. This is triggering af - and in the most horrible way.

Re: 14:30. I read something once about the correlation between obesity and childhood trauma - specifically to do with sexual assault. It was only a theory, but the researchers suggested that people who had been sexually abused used food as a coping mechanism and the weight gain was subconsciously used to make them feel safe because they believed they were sexually undesirable. It's heartbreaking and not talked about enough. And shows like this made by people who really just want to make money make me so angry.
On my 600lb life with the women like 80% of the time they had those sorts of things happen to them when they were younger. So I definitely think abuse is a weight gain trigger for sure.
I think we must have read the same study. I wish this information was more widely known and talked about rather than assuming fault with the individual. I guess it sorta makes sense in that it's consistent, society victim blames those who experienced abuse, and we blame people for their weight.
This is only anecdotal, of course, but the majority of the people on My 600lb Life have some sort of trauma: abusive parent(s), sexual trauma (childhood and adult). They explicitly say that they have used food to cope with their issues; part of treatment is going into therapy to address the cause of the eating. Many of them also come from homes where food was used to show love or is a bond among siblings.
tw: ed this is just my personal experience with why you should never lose weight for someone else- growing up my mom used to always criticize and make jokes about my weight. i was tired of it so when i was 14 i decided to go on what i thought was a health journey. it looked like i was doing all the right things, i started exercising more and eating better.BUT the problem with weight loss for someone else is that the feeling becomes addictive- i got obsessed with other people being proud of me. after that, the weight loss never felt like enough because i was scared that my mom would be ashamed of me again if i did something as simple as eating a cookie. When my dad started telling me i didn’t eat enough and i needed to stop losing weight because i was making myself sick it felt like a compliment, like i was SO GOOD at weight loss that i’d achieved and far surpassed my goals. when my mom started saying that too it was just the most frustrating thing in the world because all i could think was “screw you this is what you wanted me to do” “i did this for you, because of you” and yeah that’s kind of it. i’m almost 18 now and i’m technically in ana recovery but i relapse so often i’m not even sure you can call it that. my best advice is that if you’re making lifestyle choices, make sure your heart is in the right place
Wow, "if I don't see a change in your weight I'll have to drop you and find someone else." That's such a horrible thing to say to someone. She's treating the clients as badly as the person they want revenge on.
I think the trainer talking about the liquid diet was talking about 400 calories per smoothie. She was gonna have 3 smoothies a day plus a “crunchy snack”. That’s 1200+ calories. Still not ideal for a person of that size, but better than 400 cal a day. That’s how I interpreted it, at least.

I honestly never understood the appeal of this type of show. A lot of what happens in there is just straight up abuse that gets branded as "tough love" to make it more acceptable to the viewers
The best revenge is NO revenge. It’s self love, surrounding your self with loving people & gratitude for all you have. The “revenge” comes when people see you happy & thriving from the inside shining out
The fact that she tries to make them focus harder on their diet by “it’s just a few weeks” is only gonna keep them in a cycle of eating really “good” till they lose weight and then as soon as the “diet” is over they go back to “bad” eating and gain the weight back.
Being told so casually to forgive her abuser is so upsetting. As someone who was violently raped as a teenager, I am horrified that this happened and that it aired for other victims to hear. Saying that was also abuse and I’m sure traumatizing.

And I never thought I could ever eat a piece of candy again, without extreme guilt and disgust. So thank you so much for your content. Even though these shows promote so much bad, watching you explain things actually helps makes your points more clear to me. Love ya!!! 💕

This is the second video I've watched of yours, and I am appreciating your views and videos so much, Abbey. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and compassion!
Can we also just talk about how it's absolutely possible to move forward and heal and thrive WITHOUT forgiving your abuser? You do not have to forgive, you do not have to forget. And you can still heal. This 'forgive and forget' idea was built for people with an obsession with getting even with those who've wronged them in superficial ways that don't actually affect their life, not for those who were harmed in such a cruel way that creates deep psychological trauma that affects their day-to-day life. It's insensitive and counterproductive.

Thank you for sharing! ❤
Oh my goodness why didn't they send Jill to a therapist? A nutritionist should not be the only person addressing emotional eating caused by trauma.
Totally
I read Khloe’s book and in it she says she started her fitness journey slowly. She started using the elliptical for less than an hour a few days a week and eventually worked up to using the elliptical every day. THEN she started doing more intense workouts, so it’s strange to me she had all these contestants working out like athletes their first day. I get that it’s a tv show, and they want results fast but this is unrealistic and she knows that because she didn’t start out doing the most in the gym.
For sure. Thanks for sharing

Right? I will not excuse nor forgive the person who did that to me. I have the right to tell them to go to hell and never forgive them. I'm more internally satisfied thinking that they will drown in guilt (even though they don't know or care tbh) than to excuse the immoral actions

Eh that’s not really fair. Khloe has resources but so do plenty of people who are overweight (ex: there are tons of overweight celebs and billionaires). What she’s trying to do here is give people resources like trainers, food deliveries and even cosmetic procedures if that makes people feel better about themselves.

Forgiving a person who hurt your body, sense of safety, self worth and joy, nope!
It is definitely concerning
Also the fear mongering when she told the girl she’ll drop her from the show in exchange for someone who will lose weight faster.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this sound like something an abusive girlfriend/boyfriend would say? "You're lucky to be here" = "You're lucky you have me." "I can find another person to fill your place" = " I can replace you with someone new"

Wow... wow so forgive someone who sexually assaulted you to help you lose weight? That is really obnoxious and Abby is right- that poor woman needs to talk to a professional to help her with that. Many of us who have had this type of trauma suffer from various types of eating disorders and mental issues from not only being assaulted, but the stigma and how others treat us after.
I hope that Abby can do a video with a mental health specialist and sort of expound on the connection with trauma and eating disorders (binge eating, severely restricting, purging, and otherwise).
Thank you for the suggestion to discuss this
The nutritionist who said to just “forgive” the abuser should never be allowed to practice as a nutritionist again. Period.
The way they spoke to that young lady just broke my heart. Like come on now potatoes and rice are fine foods to eat. she will get to a point where she will be ashamed for putting food in her mouth.

Was thinking the same. Like potatoes, rice and beans? What's wrong with those delicious whole foods!

Thank you for sharing this information
Roxane Gay talks about this in the memoir hunger
Many of them also come from homes where food was used to show love or is a bond among siblings.

this is just my personal experience with why you should never lose weight for someone else- growing up my mom used to always criticize and make jokes about my weight. i was tired of it so when i was 14 i decided to go on what i thought was a health journey. it looked like i was doing all the right things, i started exercising more and eating better.BUT the problem with weight loss for someone else is that the feeling becomes addictive- i got obsessed with other people being proud of me. after that, the weight loss never felt like enough because i was scared that my mom would be ashamed of me again if i did something as simple as eating a cookie. When my dad started telling me i didn’t eat enough and i needed to stop losing weight because i was making myself sick it felt like a compliment, like i was SO GOOD at weight loss that i’d achieved and far surpassed my goals. when my mom started saying that too it was just the most frustrating thing in the world because all i could think was “screw you this is what you wanted me to do” “i did this for you, because of you”
and yeah that’s kind of it. i’m almost 18 now and i’m technically in ana recovery but i relapse so often i’m not even sure you can call it that. my best advice is that if you’re making lifestyle choices, make sure your heart is in the right place

As a survivours of csa you do not have to forgive your abuser to heal and be fulfilled and be happy.
Thank you for sharing your experience
Abbey Sharp: "It's a recipe for disaster!"
Me shouting at my phone screen: "Literally!"
😂
As a international model I LOVE your videos ! They have been helping me so much to find my own healthy balance with food. It’s crazy how brainwashed society is- we dictate ourselves how we should eat ... based on what? I think our bodies know US more than an ad or trend.
LOVE the little Mango Street shoutout in your sponsorship. They’re the freaking best.
As a future RD, this video makes me want to cry and scream. I feel so bad for these people they're trying to "help." The one woman is straight-up confessing and apologizing for eating refried beans and rice--literally two of the most amazing, nutrient-dense foods out there!! Not only is their information unscientific, but it truly is "inhumane" as you put it. Wow.
Really glad you mentioned food insecurity at the end... also important to mention food waste here. It makes me so uneasy watching people throw out food like that. I hope they donated it and didn’t actually send it to the landfill.
This whole show is irresponsible on so many levels and definitely not contributing positively to this work ://
Totally. I'm glad that was helpful
When the nutritionist told the young woman to "forgive" her assailant, I literally yelled loudly enough to scare my cat!
omg i love you thanks for being so informative and sincere!
