    The reason why ring shields disable SPs, is probably to make lasers not suffer as much
    Just remember that smoke reduces laser AP by %, and so do SPs
    Stack both and make your blocks have increased armor points too, and make a vehicle that lightning hoods will never damage

    • @comradetonk8280

      I am kinda sad this isn't the case because I hate the lightning hoods to an unhealthy degree.

      @lane9668 2 роки тому

      It doesn't really matter because smoke already hits the laser AP reduction softcap trivially. Planars aren't really relevant versus lasers because smoke does what they do so much better. Ring + smoke is much better anti laser than planar + smoke due to diminishing returns and how planar anti laser strength is calculated.

      You could still do that, using a separate "symbiont" vehicle stuck inside another, with rubber to negate the constant collision damage, to project the shields, powered by an electric engine, whose batteries constantly recieve power from the "mothership".
      Also don't forget to add smoke for aditional laser denial.
      Disclaimer: NO WARRANTY GIVEN AGAINST SUMMONING CLANG!

    I should mention about an hour after I recorded this, it clicked that there are ways of arranging ring shields inside your craft where they don't blow up anything important.
    I'll probably explore that in future videos. 👍

      I'm a bit late to the conversation but I've started placing these in the air gaps on my armor, specifically the ones arranged in large planes (flat, not aero) on the sides and bottom of my ship. They aren't super expensive to run and a hole they would cut in the air gap won't do any real damage to the vehicle because it will have already gotten holes at that point.

    I've found shields in general are generally more useful when you have the power to spare. In other words, Steam Engines. It becomes a defense add on that costs comparatively little at that point.

      Can also work with CJEs, especially on fast craft, which suffer diminishing returns on speed for the amount of thrust they output, allowing you to use a generator to take a fair portion of that thrust without reducing maximum speed too much.

      Shield projectors are useful for large aircraft too

  • @Tehn00bA
    @Tehn00bA 2 роки тому +24

    The diminishing return of ring shields hits harder when you add another on the same plane, but it's less impactful if you just make the one original bigger (which also has diminishing returns but far less). Its easier to see if you place two small ones side by side than join them in a single one.
    Still, they are better off used as weapons. (Like Sams Stash using them to cut a Megalodon in half XD)

    I know damaged rings shields behave like PACs without a max charge time, so if you want a super-PAC that charges for minuites between firing they can do that.
    What I can't remember is which PAC nozzle they pretend to use. I think it's short-range, but I'm in no way certain.
    Also, melee PAC nozzles are the best way to detonate them - no chance of damaging anything else.
    Also, I don't think they need the space inside the ring to be empty? So you can wrap them around other things.

    How fast do they charge up? It might be possible to use an ACB to turn them on intermittently; as long as they're not charging when there isn't a threat (e.g using a reactive hit-detection or proactive incoming-munitions-detection combined with a 'charge intermittently' in combat so it stays active), the stored energy might stay relatively low and avoid massive damage.

  • @major0noob
    @major0noob 2 роки тому +2

    i tested them last year vs lasers, the result was something like 30-50% in favor vs plane shields (both with smoke).
    i may be wrong about this next part but i think shells loose AP as they deal their damage ie: a 2000m/s shell loosing 1000m/s vs 1 metal beam and also loosing that speed's AP increase, while the ring will still buff the next layer the shell has to pass through.
    they also buff the angle bonuses related to AP, like wedge & slope spam.
    hollow point shells are also hard countered by them.
    the energy draw can also be reduced significantly for a minor reduction in the boost.
    finally, add the stacking bonus and you can get back to the bad old days of 5+ layers being super effective.
    in the end though unless you're a autistic FTD meta lord (I CLAIM THIS TITLE), they're not worth it

    Ring shields are so weak that making them also volatile when destroyed is basically a deal-breaker. Why would you ever use these things? Projector shields do not have this massive downside. When destroyed, you just lose the advantage of having them. Ring shields are far easier to destroy thanks to the need to make them large, but also much more dangerous if destroyed.

      I really don't understand the decision to make them volatile. They're supposed to be a defense, not a liability. It's the same reason I don't use PACs, but at least PACs have the excuse of being super broken offensively and needing a huge downside.

  • @Attaxalotl

    I think it's time for shields to get reworked again
    Ring Shields shouldn't be better as weapons than as protection; and definitely shouldn't be better than PACs.
    Shield Projectors shouldn't be so unreliable.
    And goodness gracious make them stack!
    I was thinking that killing a Ring Shield would give an EMP burst with it's damage based on a percentage of the power it was charged with; instead of a perfectly accurate line of death and despair. Still risky to have; but not in a "oh my ship just got sliced clean in half" way.
    Shield Projectors could function more like blocks, having AP and Health; alongside the Deflection Chance. You could change all three in the UI, alongside the shield recharge rate. Increasing any of those would cost more power. If a Shell's AP didn't beat the Shield's AP, then the Shell's damage would be dealt to the shield. If the Shell's AP beat the Shield's AP, then the Shield would still take damage; and the Deflect Chance is still there, but the Shell could go through the Shield without expending any damage. The Shield getting hit would also cause the Shield Projector to heat up slightly, depending on the damage of the round. If it gets too hot, it would overheat and stop working for a bit.
    Disruptor Head Shells could have an AP and Damage bonus that only applies Projector Shields; still giving them use.

      I think so too, I kinda like planar shields for topical application like extra defence for frontsiders or turret fronts, because they give the illusion of good defence, at least. ring shields seem nothing but a liability in every case I've tried to apply them so far.

  • @samuelcolt7034
    @samuelcolt7034 10 місяців тому +1

    I think I see what they were going for with forcing you to choose between one type of shield or the other, and I like the concept of it - you either choose the reliable armor buff of the ring shield, or the percentage-based protection of the projector shields which *COULD* bounce a cram cannon shot or similar. Of course, it's much less of a choice while ring shields are stupidly dangerous, but it's a neat idea at least.

    What I find confusing about the ring shields while testing with rambot's pistol is that the direction or placement of the ring doesn't seem to make a difference.
    takes 7 shots to kill a 4m beam of alloy and then add a bunch of ring shields pointing the wrong way and it takes 10.
    What goin on FTD?

    • @buhamutlotde
      @buhamutlotde 2 роки тому

      The ring shields give extra armor based on the direction the impacting projectile is going. If you have a ring shield working in the X axis and the projectile is traveling exactly along the X axis, that one ring shield will give 100% armor boost against it. If the projectile was instead traveling exactly along the Y-Z plane with no X axis vector at all, the block gets 0 armor increase against that projectile from an X axis oriented ring shield. Your testing most likely involved firing projectiles that had SOME movement along the same axis as the ring shield, and so was granted SOME extra armor increase from that ring shield. Recommend retrying the test and walking around the target block in between block replacements to see the effects the bullets direction of travel in relation to the ring shield orientation.
