    I think I've found the villages where hoya yuennanensis was found. (bear in mind I'm not a native Chinese speaker, I've just been learning it for a few years, so if there are any mistakes, please let me know).
    all of the names are in romanization that is no longer used, so I've written down the old and new romanization, the Chinese characters, and the coordinates.
    Lota - Luoda 洛达 (27° 53' 50" N 98° 58' 38" E)
    Tsekou - Cigu 茨姑 (28° 0' 30" N 98° 53' 45" E)
    both of those sets of coordinates would make sense according to what I found on jstor when I searched for hoya yuennanensis (27°55' - 28°2'N)
    Loudre - I haven't found a village with that name, but I found a different plant which was found in the Mountains of Londjre/Loudre, Mekong-Salween watershed, southeastern Tibet, northwestern Yunnan. so it could just be Gaoligong Mountains, but I can't really pinpoint any specific location.
    I've also found an entry from the book of the person that collected/identified it, Heinrich Raphael Eduard Freiherr von Handel-Mazzetti (let's all say a thank you for the standard abbreviation - Hand.-Mazz. lmao). he also mentions a village called Wuli (雾里村 28°03'39.2"N 98°36'27.6"E, unfortunately, it's not visible on google maps, only baidu maps work. it is 12 km up north from Bingzhongluo village 丙中洛村) "within the mountains near Salwin by Tschamutong". and, from what I could find, Tschamutong could be a historical name of the county that has the previously mentioned Gaoligong Mountains.
    this was one of the nerdiest things I've done in a while, feels soooo good 🤓😂

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 роки тому +1

      Omg thank you 😭😂 Yes, I read the original entry and had to translate because Latin is dead 😂 I was gonna look up the coordinates but then I realized I am still looking up the first hoya and I need to look up 9 more and record, edit and publish the video 😂 I will definitely look them up now 👀 Long live the nerds :D

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia 3 роки тому +1

      I was so excited to read this because I started my hunt by searching for wine grown in this region since "Loudre" seems like a French misspelling of a Chinese town name. And I found a wine grown in Tsekou which led me further down that hole.
      I found the Hoya taxonomy paper Miro referenced, and it says that Hoya yuennanensis had also been identified in a place called "Tsedjrong". I found a French travel blog in which they passed through that town but they noted the spelling as "Cizhong". By searching for Cizhong in Google Maps I found that it's actually called Ci Zhong Da Qiao, and just south of it is Cigu! I told Miro "this is just a hunch but it seems like Cigu might be the correct spelling of Tsekou" and then he showed me your comment. I'm pumped that I was right! Mind you I don't know a lick about Chinese or its pronunciation.
      Anyway, I also can't find a town name that a French person might misspell as "Loudre" but here's what I know: this document says it was identified by Frank Kingdon-Ward in "Loudre". It reminded me of "Lourdes". Lourdes is a city in France located just at the base of the Pyrénées mountains and lourdes is also a Basque word that describes an area with a lot of craggy rock, like the base of a mountain (such as the area of Lourdes, France or the area at the base of the mountains where this Hoya seems to grow). Could be a misspelling or mistranslation somewhere along the line. Anyway I don't have any conclusions but this was a fun read, huh? 😂

      @@betsybegonia I've also found Cizhong and went down the rabbit hole and started reading about the Tibetan Catholic Church build there by the French missionaries. they planted the grape vines and, I assume, invited some botanists 😂
      also, good job with recognizing the Chinese names! when it comes to documents written before 1949, the romanization can be all over the place. we definitely deserve some Yunnanese wine or maybe a Yunnanese hoya 😂 long live the nerds!💪

    Hi everyone! Just to remark about the H. vangviengiensis, I have this Hoya thanks to a specialty shop where I live selling cuttings of rare Hoyas sometimes and since getting it, it has only put out ONE leaf (over the course of a little more than a year). So VERY slow growing... but I got it for a good price though!

    4k... I would get myself a very nice Hoya for 10 quids from local garden centre, I always struggle to buy a whole plant , so it would be like a treat after years on cuttings)) and the rest I would spend on journey across Japan, as far and as long as money lasts))

    In AZ we have the Salt River you can go tubing on. And you bring your alcoholic beverages in coolers and tie them to your tube. We seem to have one or two deaths a year from someone falling over the tube or fall in the water or passing out and drowning. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    I had the dennisii. It died on me because I couldn't figure out the watering. It did not appreciate being underwatered and was prone to rotting.
    If I'd try it again I probably try semi-hydro with seramis or leca.

      @@BasiePlants what’s not to like about gently floating down a river with scenic nature scrolling by, sunglasses on, warm sun, fresh cool water below, and a cooler full of ice cold beer? Maybe not always bars but tubers tend to stop on small landings along the way for drinking/smoke breaks before continuing on their merry drinking way along the river. Sometimes have to make sure to lift your butt when there’s shallow rocks if you can’t dodge them since they can be sharp and can sink tubes, scrape butts, and cut your legs up if you aren’t careful, but otherwise it’s good times 😂😎

    You asked, so I'll say that I have only purchased very young, affordable plants. Cuttings, plugs... I have never purchased a full mature plant. I'm cheap, and I love the process of watching them grow and change. I wouldn't pay more than 15$ for a Hoya cutting. I wait until the price comes down. It always does. I don't judge, but I couldn't ever provide that big money for a plant cutting. I think it's dumb. But I also pay no mind to others. If that's what makes them happy, it's fine. Just no poaching activity, of course....
    I only purchase from my local nursery, or a valid grower. No imports.

I got my first car for $4000 in 2004, I got 4 weeks trip in Japan for $4000 (this was in 2013), I got laser eye surgery in Japan for $4000 as well (total for trip $8000) LOL future $4000 spend I can get my first dog and get all its shots and food and cool bed and toys for it.
