    Orchid bark/Bark as a potting medium for hoya isn't widely used here in the Philippines, not many people really sells it here which is unfortunate but we get occasional one time sellers tho. We mainly use coconut husk cubes as that is always available here, it works great for us but I prefer the look of bark. Great video and your advice/tips are incredible because thats what I do too 😃

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 роки тому +5

      Coconut husk is a lot cheaper than bark and it works great in high humidity areas. It is normal to use it in SE Asia because it is an excellent potting medium. I wouldn't bother too much with bark there. But the problem is when people get hoyas from SE Asia in that medium, they just don't water them enough and then the roots die back. It would happen in bark as well. So it is on people, not on the media ahah :D

    If my hoyas or any other plants I have, seems happy even being in old nursery soil. I rarely repot until it super root bound. I'm a bit of a lazy plant owner. But I think I'm going something ok. Cuz most of my hoyas are blooming this year. But I do repot my cuttings that has established good root system.

      Sometimes the mix they come in can be good! Especially if it's from a smaller nursery. But I find that these mass-produced hoyas in pure coco peat do much better when I repot them. And not just them. There are, however, some plants that prefer being left in that mix (calatheas and begonias for example). I totally relate with being lazy plant parent 😂

    I didn’t know about the coco that it will dry out the roots! Makes so much sense! I have a repotting to do.
    My new plant welcome is usuallya quick inspection to see how bad the situation is and a very good spray of neem oil diluted in water. If I see suspicious spots (bacteria/mealy bugs) I wipe it off with alcohol 70% and cotton disc.sometimes I take the plants to the shower. I don’t repot usually because I like to first give them a chance to rest and regroup. I also remove leaves that looks ugly or unhealthy (anyway the plant will shed leaves with my light compared to the green house. I just do it in front and than it the da to keeps the other leaves)

      I am still to receive a plant in coconut husks that doesn't have many dead roots. It's not the coconut husk that is the issue. It is the fact that believe firmly believe hoyas are cacti and they hate water. But coconut husk doesn't retain much water and that is one of the reasons they use it in SE Asia - they are outside, humidity is high, rains are frequent. Anything else, and the roots would rot. But then they send these hoyas to Europe in that mix where they get water once a week or less and the humidity isn't great. In the end, you receive a plant that lost lots of the roots. Yes, it's best to remove anything suspicios - I do it too. And of course, I spray them too :)

    I like the idea with the net pots and will try it :) When i got cuttings with some tiny roots, i put them in a medium called Seramis (it´s a bit like lecca, but holds more moisture) and all other plants will go in quarantine for a couple of weeks, and when the plant looks good, then it can stay in it´s medium. I have some plants that are still in the nursery pot. I usually repot when there's something wrong with the plant or the media. Mostly I'm a little paranoid when itcomes to bugs,so when I inspect the soil and see any kind of insect or I'm not sure about something, I repot. Unless I already see something rotting I try to wait a few weeks before repotting new plants though. Just keep them isolated and let them acclimatise a little.
    Sometimes hoyas and orchids come in those sponge-like plugs for rooting and those I really hate because they keep the plant way too wet imo and they are really difficult to clean off without damaging the roots. Had my cutis porcelana come in the mail already rotting from the center because of that.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 роки тому

      Ah yes, The infamous plug. I hate when I see Phalaenopsis in those. Usually the roots in the center will start to rot. even if you look on the side of the pot and it seems the roots are healthy, they will be rotten (the base of the root) because of this plug. I really hate it too. I try to wait too, but sometimes it's not so good to wait. I edited out a part about Anthurium vittarifolium that I left in coco peat and I didn't realize the roots were rotting - I wasn't watering it, but when I started repotting two weeks after I got it, I realized it is in a very bad shape.

    love the option to put it out from the cover pot and let it dry, ive try this type of must :) what i do to my hoyas (talking about the rooted plants) when a box arrive its to leve them almost 2 weeks in the nursery mix always checking it for the pests or something like that and then when the symptoms of stress has pased away i clean the plants and change the substrate for my mix that i use for my atmosferic conditions then prepare the new pots and after of poting the plants in the new mix, barely i add a rooting complex and wait for almost one month after taking from inside to outside cause i grew my collection in the garden :)

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, sometimes when I don't have time I will leave them in the mix they came in, but I am very careful wtih watering in that case, especially if it's pure coco peat. Leaving them outside in summer really helps in this case, because even coco peat will dry up so you can water more freely.

I in north eastern Pennsylvania, and we're moving into winter now. I think once my plants are moved indoors for the colder weather, I will order some net pots and pot them up as you've shown. Sometimes coco coir or peat moss work well, it depends on the plants. In some cases, coco coir can burn the roots if it gets too dry - I see that some people growing orchids experience this with Oncidium types. I found that leaving more water-demanding plants like begonias or calatheas in coco coir/ peat moss is fine. But I do transfer hoyas. :)

    It's interesting that Hoyas and orchids are epiphytes and what you just showed me about the Hoya roots is almost the same as the phalaenopsis roots or other Orchid roots. They have an outer layer. When I repot new orchids I tried to leave the thread part that's inside the root alone and just remove the outside of the root with my thumb and forefinger pulling it off. I found out from other people that that cord like in a route can still help hydrate the Orchid I'm wondering if the same thing is true with Hoyas. I've never unpotted or repotted a large orchids so I haven't really inspected those routes. I do know the roots from Hoya cuttings look very delicate almost translucent. Just thinking out loud here on your comment section!

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  3 роки тому +1

      I remove all those hair-like roots (especially if there are other, viable roots) because I don't want them to spoil my media (unless it is LECA and in semi hydro). If the roots are in a very bad condition, I might leave them, but it depends on the plant. On orchids, I might leave them, on hoyas I won't, since I can re-root hoyas again easily, most of the time.

      @@BasiePlants thanks for all the info I just haven't reported any of my Hoyas well maybe that's not true I have reported some in clay pots but I guess the roots were fine and that's why I didn't notice anything. I do know sometimes with my orchids the phalaenopsis they have bad roots and I used to cut them off but then some people said pull the bed fell off of that white cord like inter root and that way what's left will help hydrate the plant when it hardly has any Roots. Also it's sort of help stabilize the Orchid in the media. I really enjoy your videos and I just did to begonia videos. On my channel I went over any information The Growers had like who hybridize the begonia and maybe the year was hybridized... One of the begonia has has been around for almost a hundred years it was hybridized in 1926! The roots have grown into the bark and there are plenty of roots below that chunk of bark. I don't think I can remove the bark without damaging the top part of the roots. What would you advise? I believe what you are describing is the coconut husk. Often times they arrive like that, especially if they have been grown in Thailand. I remove it and yes, I do damage the roots. But mine have always recovered and I never lost a single one due to repotting. I am also very comfortable with taking cuttings and rooting the plant again. I did that with my Hoya obscura and it is fantastic now. It does setback the plant a bit, but it is fine for the most part. I can't keep the coconut plug hydrated in my conditions either.

      That is the mix I chose. You can choose any mix that works well for you! The mix I am using now (bark+moss) is experimental, but it seems to be working! It all depends on your conditions. If you are new to hoyas, it's best to choose a "safer" mix, like mix of bark, perlite, coco peat (very little) and general potting mix (again, very little). The mix should be airy and well-draining :) But if you just got a new hoya that is in pure coco peat, I would repot it, as it usually doesn't work well long-term.

I seriously doubt anyting will happen on those. The vine on H. kerrii that I cut is completely dead and dry. So it depends. If I only have one vine, and a small hoya, I just leave it be and don't cut the vine, even if it loses leaves. Hope that helps!

      I rarely let them get to dry, but if it happens, I make sure to water them and then spray them daily with some rainwater where I mix in Algamic - or any aminoacid would do :) They are great for this stuff. It depends on the temperetaure, light and humidity of the space where you keep them too.

    Never, ever would I use soap near my plants. There are people out there using oil to clean leafs, what a nice thick coating of dust gathering through the months. I stick to a moist, lukewarm microfiber cloth once a month.

      Dishwashing liquid works really well for spider mites and other similar pests. It is a videly used home treatment :) And it doesn't harm the plant - you just have to make sure there is no bleach in it. Oils can work too (neem, paraffin, etc) but I would use them in small concentrations to treat pest infestation, not to clean the leaves, because they can clog up stomata on the leaves resulting in premature death of the leaf. As with all, it is really in concentration :) Many orchid growers soak their orchids in 1% bleach solution to treat pests and it works. It also doesn't harm the plant. :D

      Out of my 70 or so hoyas only 5-6 have flowered so far. It takes some time and patience, especially if you start with a small cutting :)
