Nice video. I like that you left in the slight struggle to seat the piston pin clips. I'm sure you do good work as it shows in the quality of your bikes. Thanks!
Those clips always seem to be a struggle! I have seen a few motors where the clip comes out and the pin scrapes up the wall of the cylinder. Thanks EBthere!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are one of the fortunate not to get sub standard components I have received, a1250 kit with a in my opinion a casting flaw on the cylinder gasket surface to my disappointment, after holding on to for a while before install and as a international buyer contact with them turned out pointless ,spend more for replacements was there responded good luck
I saw you are also running the 30 degree .500 dome. I will be running the same pistons. What race gas are you using? I thought about trying out the renegade fuel that greg uses.
Hey ! After three years, how is the conversation kit holding ? I know you’ve been racing it a lot! Is it reliable ? I’m getting a cobra 2-1 this year for my sporty and next year is the 1275!
Hi! it´s always a great pleasure to watch your videos. In your opinion is the 1275 kit for an street use or race only? Pls keep showing us your work. Thank you.
I'm about to do the 1275 kit with hammer 560 cams and sending heads to GMS racing engines. I want to run race gas only with about 12:1 compression. What compression are you running right now?
I race with Greg from GMS. He is a great guy and knows HD racing technology! Not really sure but it has 210 pounds of compression so maybe in the area of 12 or 13.
Your UA-cam videos are always great and thoroughly enjoyed. A few questions; with the cylinder's removed have you ever pulled out the engine block from the frame? 2.) If you were going to change cams, and possibly swap out the OEM 5 speed transmission with a Bakker transmission, wouldn't just pulling out the whole block make this worth that extra step? 3.) I'm curious of your engine break-in process when going from 883 to 1275? Do you break in the engine on the road or on a Dyno? 4.) How many times do you flush & change the oil during this process? 5.) I've noticed that the sound of the bike after some Hammer builds sound smooth at idle and some acquire a real mechanical machine sounds almost like a bag of almond shells is swimming around inside the crank case? Have you noticed this too? 6.) Lastly, I've seen you use both a stock and a modified (extra long) swingarm. Rick's HD in Germany offers an interesting modified OEM swingarm that caught my eye too, ricks-motorcycles.com/parts/schwingen/schwingen-unterzug-sportster/sportster-schwingen-optimierungen-u-verbreiterungen/. 7.) Is Also a Trac Dynamics swingarm the best of the best? Reduced weight and added rigidity? What's your experience with the Trac Dynamics aluminum swingarm? tracdynamics.com/collections/harley-davidson-swingarms/products/harley-sportster-swingarms I am considering running a 180 - 200 tire?
Hey Jeff! I just had my cams out to replace the pinion shaft key with no problem. I wait before my cases were in the frame before I installed my Zipper back cut 5 Speed. I prefer having the cases in the frame because it is my normal stance. Thanks Jeff!!!!
@@motorcycleridingandrepair1627 Thankyou for explaing that about the top fins - I have a 1250 kit and trimmed the fins for the Mikuni carb. When I saw the 'cut-outs' on the top fins I was concerned that the cylinders were 'back to front' as it were .... now I am so glad I watched to the end ! I only had to trim for carb fitment on my 1250 kit fitted to a '06 model.
Hey Dave! The bottom is not stock. It has 2002 HD pressed flywheels that have been knife cut by Dark Horse in WI. It also has Carrillo rods. Since it is a race only bike the stator has been removed and a 30 tooth aluminum motor sprocket by Revolution Performance is installed. This bike has modifications everywhere.
Glad i read all of this part,i let a small shop talk me into a hammer kit after i took it to them for a connecting rod bearing knock and they didn't even address the issue and it ruined the motor. I'll just leave my '08 1200c stock,it gets me to work and church just fine!🙂
They are about 60 pounds lighter is the main reason. I also like carburetors because I can tune them without a dyno. I also prefer the older style transmission with the door. Most of the guys I race with run the rigid mounted XL's mostly because of the weight factor.
Speaking of rigid frames, have you known anyone that put an Iron 2011 into a ridgid? - If so, how big/difficult is that? ...All I know, is that it looks bad ass.
Yeah, they sell bolt on and weld on rears for Sportys but they look like they don't belong.(looks weird) I think the only way to go, is to do the whole frame conversion.
It almost seems like it would be easier to buy a ring compressor and just insert the pistons yourself. That way you're not working around the cylinder and all.
@@ninja63639 I know your comment was a year ago but for reference Hammer does charge to assemble the pistons with rings installed inside the cylinders. You certainly can order without that part of the service but it’s a time saver imo and install is much easier if you have another set of hands to hold the cylinder while you line up the pin and install the clip.
Videos aren't useful for that. If you can read you can follow the manufacturers recommendations. If you want detailed info, visit forums, not UA-cam. They go together, with videos being training aids and print for reference. Only use factory HD manuals and parts books and aftermarket parts make instructions. You want both. Hammer are famous for their excellent tech support so don't hesitate to give them a call!
For some reason, I would much rather go with the guys from Hammer, than anyone else. Just get that feeling. But I hate that I don't know enough about motors, to be able to know exactly what I need. ...How long does this take?
This 1275 has run faster than my 90 incher but the 1275 was built for a drag bike only which brings many advantages. I have really spent more time on the chassis on this drag bike than the motor which makes a big difference. This 1275 also is a total discharge system so that adds HP's.
Wouldn't it have been easier and quicker to install the pistons on the connecting rods first and use a ring compressor to install the jugs? Any advantage of doing it this way?
@@jamescarrick9752 yes, but Hammer makes it simple for install, they lube the assy, gap the rings, add one circlip on the pistons and install into jugs to make it easy for the customer. No need for the average guy to buy or borrow a ring compressor and damage the assy trying to fit the piston and rings in.
The Hammer 1275 cylinders are very big and they needed to be trimmed around the intake manifold and the exhaust ports. You can not see the trimming when the motor is back together. Plan on trimming the Hammer 1275 cylinders if you are going to use them.
Wow. With the pistons/piston rings already done, this job looks pretty easy.

Good to see it can be done alone though.
Thanks for watching!
Does a gf count? ...Or is that a hinderance!? LOL!
yes but depends on the friend helping. some are a pain
Nice looking pistons
Whats the compression ratio ???
I'm getting ready to order a Hammer B.B.kit.
Thanx in advance 😎
Thank you very much. Great to see. I am doing the same mod now. Loved seeing it done before I do mine. Thanks for making the video.
Hey thanks Larry. Great luck with your build!!!!
Why is this bike not on a lift?

why no snap ring pliers or gasket seal ??
What did you do to the heads?
I was wondering if you had any problems since you did this?
I just ordered mine.

Nice connecting rods
Nice build as always. Have you done a DYNA run yet? What pipes are you running? Can't wait to start my 1275 build this winter.
Hi Leon! I did a dyno run last week and got 120 HP's. That is with a highly modified 1275. I ran both the patriot pipe and the Dan Moto pipe so far.
What kind of break in did you do?
I'm fuel injected so I'm going to dyno tune it on race fuel. Can't wait to take it to the track
I have been racing mine all summer and it has been a challenge but I am looking for low 10's so everything is being pushed to the limits!
Did you check your squish gap before final installation?
Yes I did paul and it was .035.
Ummm, o-ring over dowel pin on top of base gasket, do you not use them ?

It takes a lot of time to build a drag bike and it is constant work.
Did you use Screamin Eagle High Tensile Strength Cylinder Studs? They are recommended when you increase your compression ratio above stock...
Hey Heavy D! I did replace the studs but with something other than the HD brand. I think I used either Zipper or maybe S&S brand studs.

is this one going to be faster than your 90 ci

Harley Davidson Racing what is a total discharge system?
The stator and charging system is taken out.
Harley Davidson Racing very slick.
It takes about 5 pounds of weight off of the crankshaft.

Hey Jeff. The pistons came to me from Hammer already in the cylinders so you leve them in and just connect the rod to the piston.
Jeff Tilghman i would say it is an advantage to have them in the cylinder as shown.
That is the way this set came from Hammer pre-installed.

Difference in top speed from 1250 to 1275 ?
That is hard to say but you probably gain a couple of HP's!
Wouldn’t there be no difference in top speed because of your gearing?? You would just get to the top speed faster with the extra cc’s
Well shit... its already half done when you start the video?
