I'd like to thank you too, for your videos and for keeping me humble lol.. I've have a quite a few people mention how "quick" or "fast" my stage 1 efi 1200 is.. To them my response is either : "not really" or "you really need to watch UA-cam" lol
When putting the gear cover on , obtain some suitable length 1/4" bolts , cut the heads off and slot them with a hacksaw , use two or three as required . These are used as dowels to hold the gasket in place .This works equally well on primary covers.
My 2001 Sportster has a slight tick and rattle at idle on the front cylinder, I've tried different lifters with no change. I've also tried different rockers as I noticed the front exhaust one had a little wear in the bushing but the noise is still there! When I run the engine with the cover off I've noticed that the front rocker has less oil spewing out than the rear, do you think there could be an issue inside the cam cover ( slightly block oil gallery to the lifter) . I don't want to remove the cam cover if it's not needed but I'm stumped on what's causing the rattle! It's definitely from the front rocker box as I've listened with a stethoscope. Cheers.
Hello and noises and rattles are very hard to diagnosis on noisy Harleys and top end noises are sometimes hard to find even with a stethoscope. So it is very hard for me to make a suggestion even if I was standing next to the bike running. Maybe a bent valve?
Hey man. Big fan of your bikes. I am building a dragbike with a sportster Xl 1200 engine 98 Stock for now but i might get some cams and headwork done this vinter when i get the engine mounts made in the new frame
I have a problem, I wanted to remove the crankcase and a gear remained attached to the crankcase. now I don't remember its original position anymore and I don't even know what position the pistons are in. how can i restore an operating situation without breaking everything?
I'm new to HD and i've got an Import XL1200 from 96, (i'm overseas, europe) the cover you put back on in the video, Camshaft cover as i'd like to refer to it as, is chrome and in really bad condition, i'd like to change it, is that pretty straight forward, remove bolts, remove cover, replace gasket, install new used cover in better condition - or can you tell me where is the danger zone in this job? :)
If the welded gear/oil pump drive are not in total concentricity after welding process,it may cause poor run-out on driven cam gears, or may cause torqued nut loosen over time.
Hey HDR, thanks for your knowledge on all your videos. Is there any cam that can be installed on a 2016 xl1200 with no engine mods, except high performance air intake and exhaust.
Andrews has bolt-in cams for your model where you would not need to do any additional work. I believe they may be the N8's but not sure. You can do it.
If u can get a drill into it at the right angle u may be able to try an extractor but it is a tough job without taking off the head. We sometimes have to use a heli coil or an oversized stud on the one end only.
How has that pinion gear held up so far. I got the .600 crush cams myself. Was wondering if it's worth the money to get the backdated pinion gear? Instead of staying with the stock one? BTW I have a 2001 xl1200c
Hi Jeff! I have used both types and I have not found any difference. However, I do always use the updated bronze oil pump gear that sit right next to it on my builds.
I assume your crankpin is pressed? Welded up? Taking my '99 1200s to the track in a couple of weeks. Time to bust it's cherry. Hero or Zero, time will tell :-D
awesome video yet again.... thinking about putting a set of n4 came in my 1200 with a hsr42 carb just can't decide on an exhaust that won't brake the bank....how do you think n4s would run in a stock 1200
Yes stock length valves. However, the Hammer BFH heads have been altered with a different valve angle and larger valves. Look at Hammer's site and look for the BFH heads with the 120 HP+ 1275 kit.
Thanks for the video, had trouble putting the cover back on my 2001 sportster and after watching how you did it, I got it on first try...
Glad it helped!
Man your sportsters have to be some of the baddest harleys on youtube...
Thank you jt and thanks for watching! It took a lot of work and a lifetime of thought and experience.

Hey Jeff I will try that next time. Thank you!
Hey Jeff I will try that next time. Thank you!
What A great idea!
Excellent thank you! I'm doing this right now on my 87 sport
Great video. You have alot of good info for a new sportster dragracer. 😂 please make more videos. You could also make some videos about Racing
Keep them coming...
What's the bigest cams you can do without any case mods
You said a weak key stock in the key way. I'm like "weld it!". Great minds think alike.
It is now welded!

Boy it is a touchy job. It would be best to use the HD repair manual and follow each step closely or to have someone with experience assist.

The problem is in getting the 4 cams lined up right during reassembly.
@@motorcycleridingandrepair1627 can it be done without tops off?
@@filmfreaken I think you should be able to do it without taking the heads off.

Thanks for the commrnt!
Love your vids by the way
Thank you Mike!!

Hammer 560 and 570 cams
Can you replace the lifters, when removing the camshafts?
Hey Michell! I did replace the lifters when installing the cams.
How about the oil pump and which hoses go where... I'm new at the but gotta start somewhere
start with the service manual
I have an 09 nightster I broke off a exhaust stud not completely off do you have any idea how to replace it without taking the entire engine apart

What sprocket tooth set up are you running?
I use a smaller transmission sprocket.
@@motorcycleridingandrepair1627 19 or 20 in the front, 50 in the back?
Do you need to oil them a little before putting the cover back on?
Yes they should be oiled.

Hello Paul and thank you for watching! My crank is pressed by Darkhorse who did the bottom end work.Good luck at the track Paul!!!

Think about the Danmoto pipe? Any of the bolt-in cams would make a 1200 wake up a little!
What's the biggest cams you can put in without machine work
And stock length valves
