Dang, 28 minutes for a whole engine upgrade. I'm gonna have to ask my Harley dealer why it took 3 weeks to swap out my cam chain tensioner and lifters 🤣
3 weeks?!?! I did a complete S&S 509 cam chest in my '02 Super Glide in like a day and a half. You'll hear 3 hrs, 4hrs. Not when you do all the cleaning on the motor that S&S tells you to do for their warranty. Your dealer is either really backed up or slower than shit.

Thank you for another excellent video. I think I've gotten my self in a pickle and need your advice. Changed the rocker gaskets on the rear cylinder on my '09 Sportster without any real issues. On to the front cylinder and everything was going great . . . until I was torquing down the four main 12 point bolts (1/2 inch, black) in the lower rocker box, when the last one snapped (front cylinder, left side, toward rear). It broke only about 1/16 inch (or less) above surface of head. Nothing to grab on to. Wouldn't be able to drill down straight into it due to frame being in the way. What options do I have? What would you recommend?
hi there, sorry to hear this.. pretty frustrating im sure.. not sure what equipment or skills you have access to, but you could maybe weld a nut on top of the stud and that can act as a bolt head.. if not then you may have to just release the engine mounts and lift the top of the engine across to the left just enough to cleat the frame and get a drill down it from above ! couple of possibilities there maybe ?
@@Moonfleet41 Thank you. Maybe moving the engine a bit would be an option for me. That's pretty easy mate, if you're in the UK I'm presuming, just go online and check the MOT history and it'll tell you what engine size it was at first MOT at 3yrs old... also, DVLA will have a record of the change if it's recorded on the V5 as a 1200 and was previously 883, and if you're not in the UK, then you could check the engine number, am sure there's plenty of online information, perhaps even with your local main dealer to find out what it is... just a case of doing a bit of research mate.

people have sentimental values as well as values added to a particular piece of machinery which has worked tremendously well throughout its life and if that could be improved then it should be improved.
It's a straightforward process, just simple assembly of basic parts, just a case of being careful and knowing the anatomy of those parts before you start... we're glad you enjoyed!

My wife has the same bike, same year, that she purchased in an estate sale. The original owner had the screaming eagle enhancements, and her bike seems really fast. Is there a reasonably simple way to determine if the 1200 conversion was done? A mechanic said he'd have to disassemble the motor to find out, and to me it seemed like if you could remove the spark, put something to measure the cylinder head down-stroke air intake pulled through the spark plug hole that it might tell you within a margin of error if it is 883 or 1200. Just curious if there's a simple way.
That won't work buddy as the length of the stroke is unaffected by changing the pistons, the crank hasn't been changed, so the stroke should be identical... The best way is, perhaps, with a Dyno Run if you have that facility anywhere, an 883 should be making about 45 ft.lbs. of torque and a 1200 should more like 65 ft.lbs. - there's a big difference, that will be conculsive proof!
@@Moonfleet41actually the shop manual tells how to check by removing the plug and sticking a piece of wire in then measuring the wire distance. You can get a manual free online.
Why don't I see any of these techs put a rag in the lower case as they pull the jug up and then the piston rings start to bind in the jug. They could pieces of broken rings in the case and ruin your day
Dang now ya got me thinking about it, do ya think that upgrade is a little late for my 02 883c, w/ about 95k miles on it ? . Starting to burn and smoke a little . I probably should've done it a few miles back
Thanks mate, appreciate your kind words, am glad you enjoyed it... trimming down the cam chest is purely a visual aesthetic to modify the look and appearance of the engine, makes it look a little more vintage!
Great editing video as always. Never missed the important part of removing/installing that after watching your video, the feeling is like, hey , i can also do it !!!
Im about to do same conversion, but the big question, you didnt worked out your heads? Can i use the stock 883 heads with the 1200cc kit, and what about the relation of the chanber? Thanks for reading! Awesome video
Works just fine with the standard 883 heads, of course you can do what ever you wish, take the tuning as far as you want to.. but im happy with just the pistons and barrels upgrade and adjust the fueling... Runs so much cleaner and stronger than before..
Great video. Just one question. I have a 1995 883 sportster that I'm working on and want to install a 1200 kit on it. From videos I've found some have changed out the cams. I even saw a vid from lowbrow that changes the cams with an S&S Hooligan kit...they mention that since they have a 2003 sportster they don't have to change the pinion gear. Seems like it would be a pain to change that. Anyway, do I need to change cams with a 1200 upgrade for this 1995 883? What year is the sportster in this vid? Thanks in advance!
Harley BARELY gives you enough clearance for the rear rocker box cover to slip out and back in. ON my 2000 XL the cover has to be turned exactly right to get it out. Thanks to whatever Harley engineer designed that section of the frame. NOT! 🤬
What’s the difference between the hk for the 883 and 1200? I think the 883 has something like 54 hk or something? I’m looking for my first bike atm, I was going to buy a adventure touring bike but I tried a 883 sportster (2006) yesterday and I fell in love with it, I love the smaller frame of it but I felt it was lacking some power! They wanted €4.4k for it and it had only 20k kilometers on it. I’ve found a 2004 883 that has had a conversion to 1200 and it only has 12k kilometers on it for €5.5k but it’s a 3 hour drive there so I need to read up on it before I’m going there (and most likely end up buying it) but if it has a little more omph to it than the 883 then I’m sold!
@@Leonard-kd7uj I ended up buying a xl sportster 1200 instead of the converted 883 and I love it! Screaming eagle has a sweet sound but I had to switch to the original sound or I would wake the whole neighborhood when going for a ride lol

@@Moonfleet41 I have a 1986 1st year Evo Sportster, that was converted by 50 year Certified H-D Tech, his personal bike! It has been lowered, lighten, 140 rear tire, 4 speed chain, S&S carb, it has all 1998 tin, Sun Wheels, etc. I've owned flatheads, panheads, 76 KZ 900, 78 Z1R 1000, & the 86 Sporty is my favorite! I bought this bike in 1998, when I was 48, rode it to Laconia a week later? I am now 75, & I still have the bike? I've ridden a few XLCH Strokers over the years, I think my Bike is more peppy? My understanding is when the 883 & 1200 come down the assembly line, the engines do not get balanced? When you take your 883 to a reputable engine builder, He balances everything, to make your 1200 smooth?? Just Sayin??
That's a nice conversion you did there Del, it makes me miss riding my 1200 custom who is just sitting in my garage at the moment. I definitely need to give some TLC before putting it back on the road.
how does the 1200 bore kit work with the 833 engine? is the gearbox, crank etc the same as the stock 1200s? seems like you would be adding undue stress to the rest of the engine, but maybe im wrong. i know all those upgrades to the M8 wind up chewing up the stock gearboxes etc.
The only difference between the 883 and 1200 engines other than the pistons and pots.. was the front primary sprocket.. they're smaller on the 883 to give lower gearing to help it pull away with so much less power...Other then that, it's the same bottom end! and this then gives a lower geared 1200, making it a lot of fun to ride. (which incidentally, is what the factory decided to do on the XR1200, by using the 883 crank sprocket, they made the better performance figures they wanted for that model.!
Another find video … I’m curious why you cut out the bottom of the trans case ?Is this your speedy hell raiser or an excuse for a run to the grocery store.I sometimes do this to the wife lol forget little stuff .Oh really hunny did we forget that…lol
Dear Mr. Delboy, I admire your precise work. May I ask if remap after the 883 to 1200 S&S conversion is required immediately or is better to be done after the break in period. It is 2011 sportster and kit includes cylinders and pistons? Is there a risk for the engine to overheat if make the break in without remap? Can the VH4 fuelpack do the remap instead of Dyno? Thank you in advance and best wishes from Bulgaria.
Yes i would always remap an EFI motor after the 1200 upgrade, you'll want to best benefits of all that investment, and if you get it set up by a dyno shop you really will enjoy the best advance in power and performance !
You have to adjust your ignition timing properly.... otherwise the engine can be damaged... vh4 could be your friend but imho better powervision... otherwise bring your ride to a prof

@Dellboy, I watched this when I was 3/4 of the way asleep so, the thumbs up was the safest way to comment. 😅
Good video though and the no talking really helped focus on what you were doing.
Does sound good!
I think ill just buy something with a bigger motor
I was about to put the same comment
people have sentimental values as well as values added to a particular piece of machinery which has worked tremendously well throughout its life and if that could be improved then it should be improved.
No de-coke of the heads or regrind of the valves?
14k mile engine!
I wonder why the mechanic doesn't grind valves in the repair.
You make it look easy pal, that take years of practice. Fair play
It's a straightforward process, just simple assembly of basic parts, just a case of being careful and knowing the anatomy of those parts before you start... we're glad you enjoyed!
Seems like you went strictly by the book on this one. I respect that, bro. Great job🤘🏽
Sensacional! O cuidado e a sutileza com as peças. Parabéns...!
Muito obrigado, você é muito gentil.
Великолепная работа! Одно удовольствие было смотреть!
Most welcome, thank you for watching.
Great video brother !!! This project was one of my favorites since around that time I got my first Harley Davidson ever , my sporster !! Learned so much from you brother !!!! Keep up the great work !!! Stay safe guys cheers from New York !!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
That's great to hear Renzo, we're so glad we're able to help around the world, especially the beautiful NYC! Have a wonderful 2024, lots more planned, D&Px
Σχολαστική δουλειά...... Bravo
Thank you.
Um motor que foi bem cuidado durante sua vida!!! Muito bom.
Thnk you for your kind words, it was indeed!
Full service all over , with new sleave and piston 💪, waaaaooow 👍
Looking back at this as a whole picture again, wow! what a transformation! Puts it back into a bit more perspective, for sure. The tool ASMR is the crowning touch :) Hope you are having an awesome Christmas holiday, and all the best for 2024!
Thank you for noticing the work that's gone in to this video, we thought it a nice way to finish the project until the weather breaks and I can get out... glad you enjoyed it, and we both appreciate all your support, wishing you a very Happy New Year, D&Px
Great idea making a jig to hold the screws 😊
I'm getting the feeling you may have done this before? 🙄
Вы хирург! ещё спасли оду железную жизнь! Спасибо за видео!
Спасибо за добрые слова поддержки.
They could pieces of broken rings in the case and ruin your day
Sensacional.....Perfeito. Nota: 1.000 parabéns!
대단한 장인 기술자
Thank You!
Dang now ya got me thinking about it, do ya think that upgrade is a little late for my 02 883c, w/ about 95k miles on it ? . Starting to burn and smoke a little . I probably should've done it a few miles back
Dang Dude…I could watch you all frigging day! I love watching a master at work!
Thank you.
HD é a melhor...eu amo HD.Excelente conversão...
Thank you!
Kereeennnn mister, coba bongkar mesin fatboy mister🔥🔥😍
Not his first rodeo, I'm thinking?
Thank you, I have done a few!
That was great, very Millyard, just needed a current bun. Seriously that was a beautiful thing to watch. Couldn't work out why you cut the case?
Thanks mate, appreciate your kind words, am glad you enjoyed it... trimming down the cam chest is purely a visual aesthetic to modify the look and appearance of the engine, makes it look a little more vintage!
Great editing video as always. Never missed the important part of removing/installing that after watching your video, the feeling is like, hey , i can also do it !!!
Thanks buddy... Glad it helped!
@@Moonfleet41 thanks!
Your truly the best del! Your advice on putting alittle grease on the inspection cover gaeket really worked for me😊 appreciate you, brother!
Ah so glad to be able to help brother, sounds like you're enjoying your project, would love to see, drop us a line anytime at delboysgarage@yahoo.com
Should it not get a bigger exhaust ? You now have 50% more volume of exhaust gases.
Perhaps logical, but not necessary, just fit some free flowing silencers to let it breath.
Top mechanic.......I would hire him but 😂..........he forgot the MUFFLERS 😢
Great video. Just one question. I have a 1995 883 sportster that I'm working on and want to install a 1200 kit on it. From videos I've found some have changed out the cams. I even saw a vid from lowbrow that changes the cams with an S&S Hooligan kit...they mention that since they have a 2003 sportster they don't have to change the pinion gear. Seems like it would be a pain to change that. Anyway, do I need to change cams with a 1200 upgrade for this 1995 883? What year is the sportster in this vid? Thanks in advance!
Nice one Del 👍
Gonna watch the full build series of videos now 👍
Keep up the good 👍
Thanks Paul👍 Enjoy the series, ans thank you for your support.
Usually more compression and cams
And can mean less reliable so be carefully what you wish for if you don't max out your 883 and not on you tube leave we'll alone
@@Leonard-kd7uj I ended up buying a xl sportster 1200 instead of the converted 883 and I love it! Screaming eagle has a sweet sound but I had to switch to the original sound or I would wake the whole neighborhood when going for a ride lol
@eak666 think you made the right decision noise wise I have a 2013 street bob with vance and hines if I plan a early ride push her out of my road before starting glad you like your new bike ride safe
Excellent way to end the build, well done mate. Hope Penny and you had a great Christmas, not to wet and cold I hope. Take care, Cheers.
Thanks mate, what a year it's been, can't believe another one's gone by... really must get out and ride more... when the rain stops lol Wishing you a Happy New Year, and thanks for all your support, D&Px
Absolutely satisfying ☺️❤🏍️🛠️⚙️ I enjoyed so much, thanks 🙏 you are a genius 🧑🔧 next time plz upload the fat bob exhaust upgrade - from Tokyo Japan 🎌
Did you remember to switch out you ignition module from the 882 to a 1200?
i don't see your Sporty anymore in your garage... have already sold her?... i couldn't wait to se you riding that holistic product of many, many hours of your fine crafwork
Under the cover next to the window buddy, still waiting to get it MOT'd and out for a ride !
Great ,respect from Tbilisi,Georgia 🇬🇪
Damn fine video and great mechanical techniques...
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Весьма интересное видео !
Well done del really enjoyed that plus having extra horses under the saddle cant be that bad 😁
Sure thing Paul, and being 25% more cubes, they'll be hauling horses not wizzing horses... So it's all Torque !! and everyone know there's nowt like more displacement in the basement lol!
I forgot to mention, when you enlarge a 900 cc bike to 1200 cc, you have increased it, 33%, giving you 25% more cubes? Go Figure?
That's a nice conversion you did there Del, it makes me miss riding my 1200 custom who is just sitting in my garage at the moment. I definitely need to give some TLC before putting it back on the road.
Good time to get it done in the winter, then you can enjoy some summer days out riding! Thanks for your support!
Que trabalho bem feito, PARABENS !!!
Thank You for your kind words!
AWESOME THIS IS MY EXACT SPORTSTER I MEAN IVE GOT THE EXACT SAME BIKE COOL BEANS THANKS FOR YOUTUBING THIS PROECT.😊😊😂
No problem 👍
more to it than just swapping out top end parts.....how many hours you get for that job?
Awesome garage 🔥🔥🔥
Кайф! Посмотрел на одном дыхании! Спасибо за этот фильм брат.
You're most welcome, thank you for your kind feedback!
how does the 1200 bore kit work with the 833 engine? is the gearbox, crank etc the same as the stock 1200s? seems like you would be adding undue stress to the rest of the engine, but maybe im wrong. i know all those upgrades to the M8 wind up chewing up the stock gearboxes etc.
@@Moonfleet41 thanks. ive been looking at the XR1200 …
No!
Its a harley they are under stressed to begin with have at it
Magnifique , travail chirurgical minutieux bien fait tout ce que j'aime. J'adore ta façon de faire.... superbe 👍🇫🇷🇫🇷
Thank you sp much for your very kind words... have a great weekend.
Why do you need a sticker on the filter to say its an old filter, unless someone else finishes the job
The job was time lapsed over several weeks, just an aid memoir
Quite involved swap! Nice work..👏👏👏👏
Thank you very much!
Very high resolution very nice video Thank you
Most welcome and thank you for your kind feedback.
한국에 오셔셔 할리 전문 수리점 하면 대박 나겠네요❤❤❤
Nice conversion. It makes me wonder if i can convert a Suzuki VX800 to a 1400 (from an Intruder)
Excellent build, I've done a few now. Well worth the time and money
Thanks buddy, glad you approve.
Another find video … I’m curious why you cut out the bottom of the trans case ?Is this your speedy hell raiser or an excuse for a run to the grocery store.I sometimes do this to the wife lol forget little stuff .Oh really hunny did we forget that…lol
Dear Mr. Delboy,
I admire your precise work.
Thanks a lot for your help. However, not clear the remap prior or after the break in period.
Right away, as soon as you fire up the bike.!
You have to adjust your ignition timing properly.... otherwise the engine can be damaged... vh4 could be your friend but imho better powervision... otherwise bring your ride to a prof
Me gusta el sonido 😂👍🙏
Great and perfect job. precisión, impresive cleanness, factory grade
