If I was to turbocharge an engine like this, should I not go higher then this kit? Or can the CNC case handle the extra compression & power, from the turbocharger? And what does S & S think about Buells? Especially the later engines. Is there any great improvements you can offer even them? Or are most of the stock Buell parts, that much greater then the Sportster engines, and there's not that much room for improvement, other then displacement? I can go to Hammer Performance, or NHRS for increased displacement, but I want to mix & match what I can, because I want to support all you great American companies. Is there any great improvement & innovation you can offer for the Buell Blast & XB models? I really like your flywheels. Are the later Buell flywheel & engines so great, you don't want to bother improving them? Or can't, for some reasons?
+RoyalSilver&Gold S&S Does make some performance products for Buell motorcycles from 1994-'02 models. Check out our website, and download our catalog. My 2014 Sportster"48" with a stage one download and Screaming Eagle hi-flo air filter and Vance and Hines short shot staggered pipes is plenty fast...you might say Spooky Fast!
My 1999 sportster that I bought recently it came with a damaged piston, the cylinders are fine somehow, but since the bike came with a SS Super E carb and air filter, but the bike was already changed, because originally it was a 883cc, now it was a 1200cc, now my answer is the next, can I buy a SS 1250cc piston/ ring kit/ cylinder set and use my original stock heads?
You can go to 1250 with 1200 heads - but not with the stock 883 heads. The 1250 bore is too big. But if you change to 1200cc heads, you can use the 1250 kit!
Is it acceptable to use feuling hydraulic lifters for the kit or is it strictly only S&S? Want THE best for my bike. Also how hard is it to start the bike after all of these upgrade?
Starting is not impacted by kit install. We recommend S&S hydraulic lifters when using this kit (we have not tested with other manufacturers parts and could not guarantee positive results)
If I get the 1200cc big bore kit, would I have to also upgrade my exhaust and air cleaner or could I swap motors and use the same parts? I currently have a 14' iron 883 running V&H short shots, stage 1 arlen ness big sucker.
In order to get the expected performance from a displacement increase, it is essential that you upgrade the intake and exhaust. More air, more power! Since you have already done that, you should be OK. We don't have test data about those particular components, so we can't accurately predict what kind of performance you will get in the end. "Individual results may vary". The other thing that we offer is the calibration files for our component combination. The calibrations that we offer were developed with S&S intake and exhaust, and will probably not be optimum when other components are used. Bottom line, it should work fine, but you will probably have to have somebody tune your EFI on the dyno.
Do you guys have any maps for this job? I've checked the power commander website as well as yours. The map I've got on there now is for the stock 883 with the Vance and Hines short shots. Bike runs fine at lower speeds, but upwards of 65, it's running a bit lean when cruising.
Your best bet would be to contact DynoJet. They may have something for the Power Vision tuner, instead of the Power Commander. Your second best would be to contact your local S&S Dealer.
How much does a set up like this go for. I was about to drop the money for the 1200 kit but seeing this now makes me want this. If eventually I will doing this anyway. I'd just like a ball park figure on what I'm looking to spend.

Hi there, just curious... What kind of compression ratios are you getting with the S&S Heads? i know that with the stock heads paired with some good pistons you can get a slight bump in compression. I heard that using 1200 heads will drop it back down a little bit. for example ive seen combos of a 1200cc top end kit (pistons and cylinders they got almost 10.7:1 ish compression vs 10.1:1 CR with 1200cc kit and 1200 heads. THANKS! Great vids btw!
I'm looking at getting a used 883 engine to build a custom bike. What year engine do I need to look for in order NOT to have any electronics? I want old school carburation.
All Evolution Sportster models will have electronic ignition, but could be converted to point ignition if you really want to. All 2007 and later engines were fuel injected. so anything 1986-2006 will be carbureted.
Solid mount Evo Sportys ended in 2003. Those are by far the best supported for chopping. Rubbermounts have some options but if chopping go solid mount.
Yes you certainly can skip to the 1250 kit. Riders who want to go this far, generally know what they want, and they want it all in one go. You still need the mufflers and the air cleaner, but most will not go through all the steps, but will do this all at once. Just a note: If finances won't allow the whole project to be done at once, you could start with the 1200 kit, and the cylinders can later be bored to accept the 1250 pistons. Just keep in mind that although the 1200 kit and 1250 kit are about the same price, if you have an 883, your stock heads will not work on the 1250 kit unless they are CNC ported.
I have a 2015 iron with V&H staggered short shots, a hi flow breather and a V&H tuner. I want to upgrade it to a 1250 kit can I use the stock heads and cams with it or will I have to upgrade those also?
Stock 883 heads are not compatible with the 1250cc kit. However, if you have them CNC ported here at S&S, they will be work with the 1250cc kit. Stock 1200cc heads will work if you have a set on hand. You could run the stock cams, but if you get your heads ported, you can go with the high lift valve springs and use a higher lift cam to take advantage of the increase flow.

Hi, I have a 99 Sportster XL 883 and I wanna upgrade it to 1200cc. What is your recommendation about the all parts or kit to buy? (in order to get the best power)
+Luis Soto Here is the recipe. The first thing we recommend is to replace your mufflers with a pair of S&S Slip-ons. That uncorks your exhaust. Next, either an S&S air cleaner and a jet kit, or better yet, an S&S Super E Carb kit. Then you're ready to install the 1200cc kit and make some power. The stock cams are really pretty good, but you can squeeze some more top end HP out of that engine with a set of S&S cams. That's where the law of diminishing returns comes into play. +KoG GoK Since you have the 'busa for your speed fix, if you're looking for something a little more practical and economical for every day commuting or whatever, think about just going to the 1200 kit and intake and exhaust. The difference between that and a stock 883 will be amazing, but it'll still be a good daily driver. Check out Step 2 in this series. ua-cam.com/video/GQz9ZMo5drk/v-deo.html
Comes out to about the same price if you're buying a used 883 and then getting the upgrades. If you're buying all new though, it's definitely cheaper just to get a much larger bike.
but if you love YOUR bike it's your bike, selling it just to get another would just feel wrong I couldn't do that. plus the 1400 - 1650 would be so much heavier. What model do you have out of interest?

S&S Cycle, Inc just asking cuz i got a hayabusa that gets around 20-25 mpg only reason i got the 883 was for the mpg sadly its slower then a honda

Uh, who cares??
Ion Racer me if i wanted to get 20 mpg i would get a 200hp hyperbike not a 40 hp harley =(
Thats why i ride a 1400..all that extra dough u might as well just get a bigger cc bike
HD NightBat right on
a 1400 is going to be in a much larger much heavier bike so any extra power is wasted hauling around a heavier bike.
Yeah but it'll STILL BE SLOWER THAN A SPORTY and always have 100 + lbs more than one too
