You bloody love that Allen key set lol
Absolutely loved this episode Del. Lots of creaks and groans from the head bolts but I'm sure it will be a different story on re-assembly. Happy for you that the bores are in such good nick and the tear down went so well. Thanks as always for the small tips which are incredibly valuable on engine work especially. Longing for the next episode already. Hope you are both having a great weekend. 🥳👋🏻🇸🇪🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, it's a great project and we're really looking forward to the progress, lot's to do and masses of potential. Have a great weekend and keep safe mate.. D&Pxx
Great project! I had a 1990 Sportster that I dissembled the engine on, together with a local general engine expert...didn't take long until he looked at me and said that this is not necessary, "this engine is like brand new inside" . And after a while he said, "besides from a couple of minor things, this is a very wisely constructed engine".
I have been riding HD Big Twins my whole motorcycle career and didn't think much of these Sportsters....the two latest bikes I owned though, has been Sportsters, that 1990's and an 2010 Iron. My respect for these "gurly bikes" has increased immensely and a Sportster is a very, very good and price worthy bike in my eyes. I have used them for both long hauls and scooting around town for years and they works equally good in both areas. Last year I sold the last one though and have built me a mobile home instead. Old age is kickin' in and everything is crumbling :)
Will follow this one with great interest.
Hey Ralf, thank you for sharing your story, and I couldn't agree wholeheartedly, a humble Sportster is a wonderful motorcycle on every level... it's no wonder they've been rolling around the roads for 65yrs, and used for everything from commuting to flat track racing to even jumping over buses! What more could you want for you two wheeled faithful companion... looking forward to getting in to this and really appreciate your support.
@@Moonfleet41 Spot on! :) And thanks for your effort and willingness to share your knowledge. I will be here, you never know, I might switch back to a bike again :)
Fantastic video! Nearly 20min, you’ve treated us on this one, enjoyed every second of it! The excitement on your face when realising both cylinder bores were still etched, we all felt that, awesome Del!! What a cracking bike
I hope the visit to HD goes well, absolutely loving this, have a wonderful weekend both of you,!! should be a nice one weather wise also, Luke x
Hey Luke, always good to hear from you and we're so glad to hear you're enjoying this one, we film what we do and take along, and so yes, a a bit a treat today!! Have a great weekend yourself, so nice to get some sunshine and some warmth for a change, ride safe and chat soon! D&Px
Hi there , I first stumbled on one of your videos in 2013 or so on how to change the oil in a Harley Davidson sportster, which I had not longed owned and was searching UA-cam on how to do it .
I absolutely love your channel and been a subscriber for many years , have enjoyed watching it evolve in the way you film and showing the tools you use.
I think this may have inspired my friend and I to start our own UA-cam channel ..Kiwi Grand Tours ..which we are enjoying and love creating new content.
Sorry for the long comment lol but have been meaning say something for years.
Keep up the great work !!
Hi Jason, thanks for your feedback and for your long term support... we're glad you enjoy the videos! UA-cam has given all of us a wonderful platform to share knowledge and information and enjoy what other people do... and for the most part, most people, use the platform wisely and get the best from it. Enjoy the project mate and stay in touch!
Del your the first mechanic ive seen remove the cyliner heads in the correct manner with due care.
Thank you Jim, glad you enjoyed it.
That was very amazing and I really learned a lot! Only thing I would ask (Very respectfully) would be a step by step guide or more explanation of what part you taking off at a time so a noob like me could learn even more! Other than that...Thank you so very much mate...I just went from 1 knowledge to like 4 but there is still more to go! Cheers matey! Great video!
Thank you for your kind feedback, I didn't pitch this video as a 'tutorial' for the novice, more just a reminder or two for those who do this kind of thing now and again, glad you're enjoying it and lots more to come!
I embark on a new adventure tomorrow. I’m buying a 2006 883R with under 6000 miles on it. I’ve owned Sporties before, a 2001 883R with a Wiseco 1200 kit,a sorted carb with a Supertrap exhaust and a 2004 rubber mount 883 which I did the de cat/spiral baffle thing, which you videoed a few years ago. I much prefer the rubber mount bike so the new bike should suit me fine. I’ll be looking at big bore kits and cams along with knobbliest and extended fork damper rods and longer shocks. It’s flipping great messing around with motorbikes. I sold both my Sporties to my brothers so when I get my new one tomorrow, there will will be three 60+ year old hooligans blasting around. Heh.
Sounds like a master plan Sir, nothing like blasting about on a Sporty, and I like your plan, it sounds like fun! Thanks for your kind support in watching the videos, it's much appreciated.
What an awesome episode this was! I could love it simply for the satisfying knowledge that all the dirt and corrosion etc., is going to be nicely cleaned up and made ship shape, but in my youth I was always dreaming of the "7-11" GSX-R engine swap, and this is right up there with that kind of cool, vaguely naughty feeling somehow, transformation. :D
Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed it, and what a wonderful upgrade the 7-11 was, short wheel base, feisty handling but with the big disciplinarian motor... pretty much the same concept as a Triton back in the 1960's, big engine in a better frame! Try doing that on any modern sportsbike these days, sadly a thing of the past now.
@@Moonfleet41 I had a poor mans Triton in the 70's, a Thunderbird engine in a featherbed frame. A friend of mine in the U.K has a "proper" Triton with a Bonneville engine. I had a go on it about 15 years ago and compared to todays motorcycles it was hard work to ride it on the country lanes of Cheshire.
Dumb question…
Since you where there already why don’t you just took the whole engine out?
I had a 06 1200 sportster with cams in it and man did that make a difference. You would be surprised at how much faster a 1200 can be with the right set of cams. I wanted to do a Hammer 1250 big bore kit but i didn't think I would be happy with the little increase in displacement. I ended up getting rid of that bike as the wife could not ride comfortably on it. I ended up getting an 06 street bob with the 88 cu in. Completely stock except for V&H slip-ons and a tuner and it is WAY slower than my 1200 was. Still fun but not as fast for sure.
Sure thing, I've done a few of these over the years, there's a little misconception about the current crop of 1250 and 1270 kits and the Hooligan kit with cams, is that they're all for 1200's... this is an 883 and I'd need to change the heads to bolt any of that kit in, and as it's an early model, pre-fuel injection, there are limited options in kit form... but we have a plan! ...and, of course, we have the much lower 883 gearing in the primary and you're dead right also, a big twin can't catch a Sportster pound for pound!
@@Moonfleet41 I have always wanted to get a Buell 1203 and do a 1250 or 1275 kit and put it in a sportster. Or get a xb12R and do the 1275 kit on. That would be really fun to ride.
I have the same exact sportster that I just done hammer 1275 big bore kit on. My cylinders also looked almost new inside. 12.5k miles. I'm still just over a hundred miles into my break in period. Weather hasn't been so good where I live. Great video series
Thanks Nick, you're right, it's only just warming up and sunny here too, so hope it's not too long before you can get out... enjoy your bike mate!
If it's me I'll go with 1275 kit + 570 cam from hammer performance
It's the best & most sufficient choice in the market 💪🏽😎
£2k should cover it .
Hi Del, Been watching your videos for many years. I wrenched on heavy equipment for 40 years and I have huge respect that not a single power tool was used in the disassembly. Taking the extra time shows me how meticulous you are and how much you care for the vintage iron. Cheers and best wishes to you and Penny from the U.S.👍👍 Stocking up on popcorn to watch the rest of the series. 😁🤣
Thank you so much Rick, i started my career on heavy commercial stuff too, and yeah, i much prefer just using hand tools, so much information comes through 'feel', i see kids working on things using power tools for everything, even small plastic items, power tools for every single procedure, just smacks of laziness and and impatience.! you can't feel a vulnerable thread about to strip or a stiff bolt binding up when all you do it pull a trigger !! Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot that it's appreciated. Take care and keep safe Sir.. D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for your reply Del. I'm sure your time is very limited. I am honored that we had similar career experience. Concerning our views on power tools (admittedly they have their place especially on the heavy stuff) sometimes old school is the best school. 😁 You and Penny stay well and happy.
Its like watching the David Attenborough of motorcycles! Love it!
The test of the oil tells part of the story, another part of the story we will learn from the condition of the plugs, but you did not show us the condition of the plugs (and I guess their condition is very good). And if the engine reaches a high RPM at convincing acceleration also a compression test is too much. It's an engine that needs no more than standard maintenance, and perhaps a valve spacing check (not even sure the valves needed to be adjustment). But you knew all that ... you want to upgrade that engine, and we earn the best show in town. Thank you very much.
Thank you mate, indeed, hydraulic tappets, maintenance free!... glad you're enjoying the project, plenty more to come!
What can I say - awesome video guys - like "watching a Haynes manual come to life" - I'm sure some people will end up doing similar mods to their Harleys after following this series through and seeing that it's not a "dark art" (and hopefully the keyboard engineers won't be upset that you did it in your hoodie - or wore the wrong colour gloves or something aye? 😉) Have a great weekend! 👍😍x
Cheeky Mike poking fun at the whiteboard specialists, now now... lol But seriously mate, glad you're enjoying it, lots more to come and really looking forward to getting stuck in... the parts bill will be painful but it's well worth it at the end. Have a great weekend too, D&Px
That was awsome Del. Years ago I bought a harley davidson magazine that had an article in it about turning an 883 sportster into a 1200. I was obsessed with this wanting to do it. Unfortunately I had neither the time or the money to do it. This is the next best thing watching my favourite utube mechanic doing it. Absolutely loving this series roll on the next episode.
Thanks Freddie, glad you're enjoying it mate.
Nice job Del.. Internal engine work, now we're talking!!
Sure thing mate, looking forward to it!
Great video man gave me enough insight to tackle my buddy’s bike
We thought maybe his exhaust gasket blew out so we replaced them only to find it’s the gasket that sits directly in the middle where the head mounts to cylinder
The one thing that scares me more than fork seals, an engine strip down, absolutely loving this and the talk through. I'm gonna have to find an old engine to play with. Thanks Del. keep safe
Hi Anthony, buying an old scrap engine and ripping it apart, there's no better way to learn what's inside... and the best part is, when you're finished you can sell off the bits for spares! Glad you're enjoying mate.
This video is at lest 10 hours too short!!!😂. I could have sat and watched this all night!!! this is gonna be another belter, good to see you back on a Harley project again, Del!!! MORE, PLEASE!!!
Glad you enjoyed it mate, there will be lots more to come... cams out next, then stripping the primary and dropping out the clutch whilst I wait for all the parts!
Nice work, crystal clear explanations, excellent camera angles and editing. Well done, mate!
Glad you enjoyed it, much appreciate your kind words!
Great series. Best engine strip down I've seen. Many thanks. I have a suggestion: I noticed you use a little strip of masking tape to mark things for later reference (eg your 'no oil' note on your oiltank). I do the same thing, it works really well. Instead of the beige masking tape, I've found that 3M BLUE painters masking tape works much better for a couple of reasons:
First, it's designed to remove cleanly even weeks (or months) after it's been applied, leaving no residue behind (where old 'regular' masking tale will leave gummy crud everywere, especially on painted surfaces etc).
Second, it stands out from the other colors on the bike, where the beige color regular stuff blends in. That makes it much easier to see and therefore not overlook. When I'm stripping a bike it will end up covered in blue notes and little pieces on every un-torqued bolt for example...
The blue stuff can be removed and re-adhered several time too, which is useful. I keep a running to-do list (usually on the rear fender), and as tasks are added or completed, I move the tape notes to adjust the list accordingly...
The blue stuff is maybe three or four times the cost of the beige, but it's definitely worth it, especially in the small amounts you'll need...
I hope thats useful info :)
Your hex key set is badass! Regarding modified tools, over the course of my time turning wrenches on M1A1's, M88A2's and ABV's it didn't take me long to amass a toolbox drawer full of modified wrenches, Allen wrenches and other tools that greatly simplified various tasks on those vehicles. One tool in particular was a specialty wrench for replacing the main hydraulic quick disconnect fittings that our machinists made for us on site. The tool itself was cut from high carbon steel on a water jet, then hardened and tempered for durability. It cut the time it took to change fittings easily by two-thirds. Anyway, I look forward to the remainder of this project.
Thanks brother, worked on commercial stuff in the past, 19mm hex sump plugs on DAF enginer, no need for fancy socket allen keys, just take an M12 bolt, 6" long (coach chassis bolt), hammer it 90 degrees in the vice, hey presto, instant 19mm allen key!
Ps, regular oil and filter changes will always pays dividends. Good video.
What did I take away from all the knowledge in this video?...
I really want that "flippy" allen key set...

Ah yes, bought new by a 69yr. old blue rinse Sunday school teacher, just over a thousand trips to the Church of Holey Stockings some seven miles away; never seen above half throttle in it's life, stomped into top by size 4s ASAP & left there to chunter away on it's abysmally weak 'euro-lean' mixture as both rods clank about like Brunel's Tuesday dentures.
Bruised main bearings with more rumble than the rush hour Circle Line, fried poppadum clutch plates from all the third gear pull-aways, leaving well baked springs with less grip than Boris . . . on the other hand of course . . .
It could be an unmolested good-un . . . should be fun : )xx
(P.S. Fine barrels, why go any bigger? XR's were only 750 but a healthy one of those will certainly straighten your pubes!)
You're not wrong there brother, 750 was plenty enough for Evel Knievel to fly through the air at Wembley, over 13 buses, only to land on the last two, too late for the late night bus, only to end up sliding in to the bus station and breaking the window on the kebab shop, ... I know, cos I was there, aged 11yrs old, and full of admiration for the mighty flying American! Do that on a Goldwing.....

It was like a Tatro Machine video but without all the moaning!
Keenan is a Harley genius and a master machinist, but boy he can whinge!
Any how , it's good to see you getting in there and having fun doing it .
Peace and love to you both 👍🏻☮❤
Hey brother, no point in moaning aye, never gets anything done, there are always frustrations, but just make a brew, take 5 and it never looks that bad! Glad you're enjoying the series, have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine! D&Px
This is an awesome build. Good luck at the dealership. 👍
Thanks Mike, took my wheelbarrow and a small mortgage and some painkillers for when I get the bill ... but can't wait to get into it!

Awesome Job Del. I'm saving these video just in case I need to go some major work on my motorcycle.

Have owned many bikes since 1964, but the Sportster is my all time favorite. Thanks for this treat.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your feedback!
Nice one Del your really going to town on this build. Yeah brings back memories of tuning strokers gas flowing ha ha who remembers that more like tinkering 😂
Really impressed with you on this one, actually getting into a motor strip. I can't recollect you ever doing this in any of your videos, ever! And with someone who is really passionate about Harleys, remembering Penny's 883 to and those mods.
All the very best to you both xx
Your words of wisdom Del reminds me of these awesome words to:
Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:5 AMP
Hi Marc, lovely to hear from you as always... and I think this kind of work always stirs people's fondest memories! I have done plenty of engine work over the years, valve clearances on the Legend, clutch mod on the Hayabusa, full clutch replacement on the ZX7-R, plus numerous chains and sprockets and other mechanical work on cycle parts... this kind of work may not be common on the Channel, but it's not uncommon to me, it's been a part of my life for the 41yrs I've been riding... beautiful sunshine this morning, days like this are a gift, so we're out for a little ride in the lanes and blow away the cobwebs! Have a blessed weekend, D&Px
Oops forgot about the clutches it was the barrels and pistons that threw me. Remembering now that you are a bus fitter 😀 nice work.
I remember taking my 2003 apart to do a big bore, bought at 10k and at 19k when I took the jugs off they still had the cross hatching. I was very pleased with how clean the engine was inside.
It's great to hear that you had the same findings Chandler, it seems these engines are pretty much bomb proof as long as you don;t tune then too hard and abuse them..
@@Moonfleet41 Good thing yours has Mids, I recently blew my pump to filter oil line because of the awkward position it was in for nearly 20 years. Now I may or may not be diagnosing piston slap from running at low oil nearly dry because of that 😅
@@EquestrianAltercationsLLC Damn, that's bad news, i hope it's ok, they're pretty resilient, if you stopped as soon as you popped the hose im sure it'll be ok.
@@Moonfleet41 unfortunately it ran near dry for at least a couple miles. Just pulled the cylinders to see burn marks in both, scuffing in both, and light scoring on both pistons. Going to try out new piston rings 🤞. Until then I'll just enjoy your neat orderly work on the Sportster.
@@EquestrianAltercationsLLC Damn, sorry to hear that, New rings will be effective, see if you can get the bores honed through to clean them up too, should be more then recoverable.. Good luck with it buddy.
Great video. I'm just looking to remove only the front cylinder so I can tap/helicoil one of the exhaust stud holes. Because the frame is in the way of me doing this with the cylinder still on the engine. So, this is a nice easy video on how to get it out (y) Thanks
Just a quick question, will I have to drain all the oil out before I do this? As I figure it all sits in the oil tank, and there shouldn't be any in the cylinder head/cylinder?
That's quite right, there may be a little residue in the rocker box, but nothing to speak of, everything will be in the bottom of the engine, or in the tank...
I cut the timing cover down on mine with a large hacksaw and various files, took ages but looks tons better
Keep watching mate..!
@@Moonfleet41 Too right

Nice, this is giving me so much inspiration. Getting back into riding after 15 years of riding non stop and then having to sell my bikes and buy a car for 5year😞 Bloody kids lol, and about to start my own sportster build when iv save enough penny’s, keep doing what you do, love the content 👍🇬🇧
Great to hear that mate, welcome back, and yeah you'll need the pennies, parts costs a bomb, it always looks cheap initially, then you buy all the little bits and bobs you need to finish the job, like gaskets and fluids etc., suddenly the job price doubles!
Great start into Saturday with a cuppa and your video, Del. Really liked how you taped up a spaces for cylinder 1 und 2 on the bench, good idea. Thanks for showing how to dismantle an atomic Harley ;-) Quite different to a Japaneses bike.
Cheers from Nürnberg/Germany, Günter
Thank you Gunter, Glad you enjoyed it my friend.
Great video Del. Been wanting you to do a breakdown of an engine. Love the detail as you started to break it down.
Thanks buddy👍 glad you enjoyed it.
I feel a hammer coming🤔
Better duck then..!
@@Moonfleet41 lol,im doing the 1275 on my sporty very soon, just done the clutch so perfect timing on the new project bike💯👍✌
Cheers mate, So much potential in them aye.. obviously more so with a 1200 motor, as the heads have bigger valves and slightly higher compression.. but the 883 bottom end has lower gearing so even just lopping out to 1200 will hand me 50% more torque.!
@@Moonfleet41 nice,I recently moved from London to Ireland so defo need the upgrade for the big lush new roads😉
collapsible pushrod covers and rocker lockers - must have for this engines I believe
About to crack my engine open for the first time to replace head gaskets. This video will help me a lot 🫡

Amazing! You make this look so effortless and exciting!!
Awesome job both of you! Reminds me of when I did my T140V except you’ve done twice the work. Enjoy the weekend.
Thanks mate 👍, you have a good weekend there was well, and we'll catch up again soon!
Nice to see som engine work instead of body mods. :-)
This is such a cool series, been wanting to see a detailed breakdown of one of these for a while. Also have a sportster with 13k on it. If its been treated and maintained properly, hopefully engine components are in a similar state as yours.
Thoroughly enjoying this one man. Stay safe and have fun browsing options at the dealership

Awesome video very informative many thx
Del, you're like a ninja the way you fan those hex wrenches open!! Love it! I found your channel a few weeks ago, and now I'm obsessed! Keep 'em coming brother, they're some of the very best out there. Paul
Thank you Paul, Welcome aboard Sir, im glad you're enjoying the content.
Surgical. As usual. You whispered that v-twin into components! Have a great weekend, both.
Thanks, you too Guy, appreciate you watching!
Can't wait till you start on the cams Delboy
Del, I was wondering...about those cylinder upgrades...to 1200, 1250, 1280 cc...I assume they produce a significant power gain. I mean, if they didn't, what would be the point? But all that increased power goes into a bottom end, clutch, and transmission that was designed for an engine of 883 cc which produces considerably less power. So...are you overstressing the engine components that are remaining? Does this mean that things are going to start breaking?
883 and 1200 have an identical bottom end !
Definitely should hold the jugs with both hands 👍
Always buddy!
loving the vid Del Boy, on the push rods there are red markers on them, are they important?
Yes mate, it's important not to mix them up, red is exhaust and brown is inlet!
Love your channel! Your videos on the FXDWG and tool tips have been some of my favorites. Just curious on why you didn’t save yourself some aggravation and just pull the Sporty motor? Almost as easy as pulling an air cooled VW! Plus you can properly detail the frame.
Thanks for your kind words... done this a few times over the years, a motor is far easier to strip and pull apart when it's not skating around the bench, so just use the frame as an engine stand!... am gonna re-build it and it will indeed come out the frame later once I finish the dry build!
Great find in the barrels. Looks like it’s going to a great watch over this project.
Wow, great strip down, thought engine has to come off the frame, you did it on the bike.. see next video!! Really Kwel!!
I am loving this one Del, Ive said it before but in my opinion, the best & most informative UA-cam channel. Just so interesting👍
Awesome, thank you so much for such kind words, we're glad you enjoy our content.
Can’t wait to see what you do to this Sporty. I used to own one that when I got it it was knackered. I had to do a whole lot of work to it. Glad to see yours hopefully won’t be as bad. Now get to work buddy. Hahahaha
Really looking forward to it, it's a wonderful bike, simple and uncomplicated to work on! Thanks for your support, have a great weekend!

Another excellent installment of this rebuild! Very good camera angles and editing. Attention to detail is everything! Happy shopping at the Harley dealership! 🤘🏻😎
Thank you very much Colin, took a wheelbarrow and a wallet and some painkillers for when I receive the bill!
Ive owned my sporty since 97 its a 883 hugger 1996 model , after 80 thousand klm and i ride hard to keep up with my big twinn buddies ,, anyways after all this time and how i ride i decided to check my compression and see if its getting low and ill go 1200 kit ,,,,well factory compression on a 883 is 120 psi ,,,,,both front and back are still 120 psi , not even 1 pound loss , thats how good harley evos are , ill probably never go 1200 because if it aint broke DONT FIX IT is my moto , guess i need to ride harder now lol .....
Try a 1200 and see how much extra torque it gives you.. you'll keep up and the bike will be more relaxed.. also it's the cheapest way to more power without stressing your engine too!

Nice to see some good old hands on spannering Del. As for the engine, go Big or go home!! Lol. 😎🏍👍
Looking forward to seeing what you do. I bought exact same model and it's been fitted with hammer 1250 and andrews n2 cams...dynatek ignition. It will be good to see your comparison
Nice 👍, i can't imagine the bill if you paid for all that kit and parts... mine is already stinging and im not done spending yet.!
@@Moonfleet41 I ordered direct from hammer and it wasn't too hurtful
Hello Delboy, I have heard quite often H-D carbs are rather finicky and S&S are better?
I'm enjoying your vidz.
An S&S carb would be a delight, but not in the budget I'm afraid so I treated myself to a Thunderslide kit which makes a vast improvement along with the S&S top end!
Just visualise the exhaust bark and the acceleration from standstill… It’ll make budget constraints disappear!! Go the full monty!! You know it’ll make sense!! (Speaking from a stage 5 road king 😉)
Hand dexterity of a heart surgeon.
A bit of sweet talking and I’m sure you’ll get a good deal on something 😁
The best video I've seen of a tear down. Great work mate. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the build. It wouldn't be a stripped down bobber/chopper with a hardtail rear by any chance would it
Don't think you have done a full engine strip/mod/refurb before???????
Not on camera buddy, but it's nothing new to me... glad you're enjoying!
What a great series! What do you use for supplemental technical info? The manual? Or research online? Just wondering what your approach is as we are always learning as gear heads right?
Lifetime of experience, but always have a manual nearby!
A Hammer Performance 1275 big bore kit that's what you need, not Screamin' Eagle. You'll also need to update the oil pump drive gear, the original one isn't up to the extra power of a big bore kit.
It's all got to balance in with the entire budget for the whole project.. you can end up spending more then the bike cost if you're not careful, i just have to keep a reign on the spending at this point.! thanks for the recommendations mate.
@@Moonfleet41 I have Buells, as you'll know they are much more powerful than HD engines. Buells built before 2006 need to have the bronze oil pump drive gear fitted as preventative maintenance. The steel ones fitted by the factory have a tendency to wear unevenly and send metal into the oil system, some have been known to completely shatter. Might be worth directing some of your budget in that direction. Hammer Performance have a very informative short video about this problem with higher powered Sportster/Buell engines. All the best with the build, looking forward to seeing your work.
@@mrlongtree Yeah, I'm only too aware of all the various weak points on Sportster motors once you start to ask big power from them, it seems they have a few weak links.. the pinion gear was one thing i definitely needed to inspect for myself, along with the cam lobes.. and i'm so thankful for Harley's gutless 883 top end, this motor is practically new inside, the pinion gear itself is spotless and doesn't even show it's 'run in' let alone worn.. Seems there merit in buying a little un-tuned, unloved 883 ! and i wont be asking much of it as i plan it to be a reliable street bike and no more, im too old for stunts and too skint to fix it again..lol! Thanks again for your insight.
Nice! Can you do it again without the accent! Thanks!
I’m looking forward to this build, I’m glued already.
Thanks mate, really appreciate your support, we're looking forward to it too!
Hi Del great video never had a Harley myself looks too much like hard work Looking forward to following you on your journey mate hope both of you are keeping well
Thanks mate👍, they're certainly not hard work, simple and easy to work on, and hold their value better then a vintage shotgun ! Have a great week buddy, and keep safe. D&Pxx
the engine looks bigger here and the sounds are satisfying.. I wonder what was the click sound when the bolts were loosened
Excellent video!!
How would you find TDC without cams in or transmission? Is there any damage done by taking those out first before top end disassembly?
Damage to what mate?
I took out the cams and transmission first before the top end. I am wanting to take off the top end still but have read that I should have taken off the top end first before the cams and transmission. I have read that there could be damage done but they didn’t specify. I appreciate the help!
Amazing quality!!!! Great Job!!!!
Nice one, I'm excited to see what happens :) Hopefully as cool as the Triumph Legend project (my favorite)!
Thanks Fredrik, looking forward to the project too!
This is going to be good! Can’t wait to see where you take this, Del! Have a great week ahead and stay safe there!
🏍👍🏍
Thanks Gary 👍, looking forward to this project... have a great week both, stay safe!
@@Moonfleet41 hi to Penny… 😎
Well that went well! Happy for you buddy. So good to see a Harley as a project bike. I’ve done this a few times with 1340’s but will still be watching this one with interest brother. Regards to you both!
Yes indeed, what wonderfully simple engineering they are, without filming and whatnot, you could do a top end upgrade on one of these in a day dead easy... and thankfully it's carb'd so no faffing around with downloads or expensive fueling devices, just a Dynojet kit in the factory carb... thanks for your support brother, it's always good to hear from you, stay safe both, D&Px
Wow , mint bores , absolutely outstanding to see , that it's not even run in yet , great video Sir. Hope you and your lady are both fine .
Mint bores indeed mate, there's an old mantra, that Harleys take 10k to run in, it's dead true as you can see! And thanks for asking, we're both ok, pacing life nowadays after a tumultous 2021!
@@Moonfleet41 good health to you , can't wait to see more videos on the Harley , you can imagine the Rest of the engine is gonna be mint , what a great bike in its self
Hi Del, I've never missed a video I'm a try fan just how thorough and detailed in explaining everything your doing I'm so excited abouts this project greatcwork.
Awesome, thank you mate, we're glad to hear you enjoy the videos, we appreciate your support!
Which way are you thinking mate?
Tyres ripping torque or top end speed?
Or an all round rideable fun bike?
Only 50 or more videos will tell😉
Always rideable, there's nothing better than a tractable, fun ride without any grief from over tuning!
Del you might get some extra ponies with a decent port & polish on the head but you're the engine doctor lol
Sure thing mate, there's masses of potential, just gotta keep it all within budget!
Hi Mate, Very interesting video and new project! Excellent camera work and editing! I hope you're feeling well. Hi to Pen.
Hi Byron, good to hear from you, and thanks for your kind words, yes a new project and a Harley too, so hope you'll enjoy! I'm doing a lot better 10 months on, still on lots of meds but pacing life, PP is recovering well from her knee surgery, so 2022 is looking a lot brighter. Hope life is good there for you and you're all keeping well!
Hi, thanks a lot for the video!
BTW, front caliper is not stock. This kind of calipers is stock for touring bikes, but not sportster.
Interchangeable perhaps..!
Yes, as far as I know, touring caliper fits on sportster just bolt on. The point is that touring has 4 pistons, stock just 2.
Cool, looks like I have a pair then as have the same caliper on back!
These 4 piston calipers were stock on all '03 Sporties. I'm not exactly sure when they became standard, but my 2002 1200s has three of them, factory installed. I just checked my 2002 brochure which shows the entire XL range with the very same calipers.
@@harleydavidson801 hmm, looks like you're right. I surely know that 2007-2013 sportster can fit calipers from older dyna and touring. But looks like this is not the case.
Sorry for misinformation. :( Wanted to show up my knowledge, but ended up with screwing me up. 😅
