Apple AirTag privacy review (Real-life test.) 🍎 Today is all about the newly released tracking device, the Apple AirTag. Anything with the Apple logo tends to get a lot of scrutiny, especially because they preach about security and privacy so much. But, has Apple dropped the ball on this one? We’ve tested the “global-tracker”/“stalker” theory to see if you should be concerned.

🧭 Are Apple AirTags accurate?
Whilst Apple has branded this tag as a great way of finding your lost stuff, they can’t really control what consumers use it for. Considering its supposed capabilities, this is pretty scary. From our testing we successfully tracked our colleagues’ location for over 2 hours, using an Apple AirTag.
The Apple AirTag uses the Apple-created “find my” network to operate. This network is undeniably huge as it leverages the entire Apple user base. Apple AirTag uses secure bluetooth connections alongside this, to track each AirTag in the “find my” network. This is why AirTags can accurately be tracked, as the “find my” network works as a collective.
🤷 How do you know you’re being tracked?
Now, Apple has put some measures in place to avoid unwanted tracking, but they are a little vague. Let’s break down what Apple says, in comparison to what our tests concluded. Firstly, if you have an iPhone, you should get a notification letting you know you have an AirTag on your person. This is supposedly meant to happen after you reach a familiar location, or after a few hours. In our testing, the “victim” did not have an iPhone, but the cameraman following her did and he never received this notification, even after 2 hours of tracking.
Secondly, if you don’t have an iPhone, or any device for that matter, the AirTag should sound an alarm to let you know its location. According to Apple - this should happen after vigorous shaking, or after “some time.” From our tests, it took up-to 3 days for this alarm to make any sound. Meaning...I could track my colleagues location for an additional 3 days. According to Statista over 130 million people in the US have Android phones, so this finding is really worrying.
🔓 Is Apple AirTag safe and private?
Now, what does all this prove? Well, whilst Apple AirTag might be great for precision finding essential items, consumers can clearly abuse it. We’ve ALREADY seen this little tag seemingly hacked, less than two weeks after its release date! Which could lead to phishing scams and a whole bunch of issues. Our test has concluded that in the wrong hands, maybe the measures put into place by Apple just aren’t enough, considering this inconspicuous tag could gather a lot of personal location information, without the victim even knowing.

Good for tracking when we lose our child in a store…
Now, that's a thought! :D
When used for good its awesome but when used for bad its a nightmare !!!!!
Be careful not everyone is a good person not everyone cares for you !!!! Some will hurt you instead !!!
Criminals put on your vehicle and your purse. Technology is the Mephistopheles from the book Dr Fausts of modern times.
You can disable the the alarm just by cutting off the speaker, which, undoubtedly, creepy people will do.
Yeah, that's undeniably creepy! :/
And who will hear that little beep if it’s outside in a car?
The point is that if the iPhone alert you. You call the police they will find it and prosecute bC AirTag give all the user information to police
A couple of people in my neighborhood did this, but they also punctured the speaker on one & taped up another one. Even though it started beeping, the person being tracked didn't hear any alerts from it.
That's pretty scary!
@@cybernews why trackers been out
@Aaliyah 3 people are paranoid
Okay now that I watch your video. I don’t want a Thief to know that he’s being tracked after he steals an object a bag bicycle or anything else. And yes it can be used for stocking which is not cool but anything can be abused
Attach it to your random bike and leave it unlocked in Vilnius. I am not saying it will be stolen fast. People are getting better and better. But the stalking show would have another level of involvement :)
Labadiena
Yeah, it's a good way to track stolen items. Although, there is the argument people could just remove it, unless it is hidden well... :)
@@cybernews yes, but I have a little fisherman and my mind could go creative ways to catch a prey :))
I watched the whole video just to see what kind of alert or message we get if we are are being followed by an airtag since the title of the video says stalking test. Disappointed that they didn’t actually do the actual stalking test. Got click baited
Hi, thanks for your comment. This test was to see if you can be stalked without knowing. The AirTag did make a sound on the third day, alerting the "victim." If you have an iPhone, it can vary from a few hours, to a few days to get a notification, it really depends on whether you're going to regularly visited locations, that your iPhone has stored.
This is so well done and presented. Awesome!
Glad you liked it!
Yay, I can stalk my favorite singer now
Why is this a concern all of a sudden when you could’ve done the same thing with tiles for years now?
Hi Igor, I think with any new technology, we wanted to test it out and let users know what they can expect. Especially if people are new to these types of trackers.
Bc apple is a huge company attached to people's phones and will be used much more frequently. Many people don't even know about Tile
@@sd3864 samsung has one too it been out for a while now they are just. as big as apple.
@@PrecisionPlay752What is the name of the Samsung tracker?
Do you set it in “lost” mode or no?
Hey, no we didn't set it to "lost mode." We wanted to see what would happen naturally. "Lost mode" just means people can scan it and view the owners contact information. :)
@@cybernews Does it still provide the 3 day beep when it’s actually in lost mode, because this is a double edged sword, I have heard the side of people being tracked unwontedly but also of instances where a person stealing belongings with an AirTag attached who were informed of it’s present.
Loved :D
Thanks! :)
That and I had to edit my comment 4 times because it “wasn’t respectful” enough. All I was trying to say was the video wasn’t helpful
Why would you expect the airtag to notify them that they have an airtag on their person when its meant to be used to find lost things. If it was attached to my wallet, i wouldnt want it randomly letting off an alarm or giving me a constant notification about where it is when its not even lost at the moment. I see your point but anyone can abuse anything.
Good point, but this is showing how the airtag can be abused.
Oh heck noooi!!! This takes stalking to the next level oh hell no!
It sure does!! My so called boyfriend stuck one in my car without me knowing and I was notified on my iPhone. I guess, he was trying to keep track of me.. I told him to get that shit off my car and it’s against the law to install it without my knowledge… I could file a police report and bring charges smh..
Yep, yep, yep! It happened to me!!!
Very scary. 800,000 children go missing every year and who knows how many women over 18? Alot! Not to mention, crazy ex's etc. I see lawsuits
@@sd3864 now, ‘home accessories” is installed on my phone and it wasn’t me who did it. I see it under my battery app within the last 10 days. Over and over again. “Car.”
There have been devices like this for years. It’s crazy how oblivious people are to how unsafe they potentially are, until Apple’s name gets mentioned.
So when does it tell the tracked person
Hey J.a. it varies! Also, it depends if you visit a place you usually visit, like your home or work, then the likelihood of being notified is higher.
Kinda want to see this with Samsung smart tag
Samsung Galaxy have just introduced an update that's similar to the AirTags' "stalker" defence. Meaning you should get a notification that an unknown tag is "moving with you." So yes, it would be interesting to get clarification on timing/if it works, etc. Thanks for the suggestions, we'll think about it for the future. :)
The only reason I see to buy a airtag is to be able to find or track. It defeats the purpose of someone stealing you stuff Apple alerts them their being tracked and they ditch you tag. Sometimes security over steps
Yeah, this was an "anti-stalker" precaution, but you're right. I guess the best bet is to notify the police about the thief's last location. Though these trackers are more for tracking lost items around your house/workplace, etc. :)
What a beautiful country and the city Vilnius
Thanks for nice words :)
The "end-to-end" encryption thing was demonstrated to be a farce, given that you can simply extract the private key from the unencrypted firmware and use that to download the AirTag's entire location history from Apple.
Please give me a source so I can read about it.
Do they have an iphone?
It may be you have them in there contact
Considering that one of the main purpose of the air tag is to locate the attached item when stolen, you don't want the airtag to notify the theif that he is being tracked. It should be allowed to go unnoticed for an extended period of time. Last thing you want is to alert the thief and they get rid of the airtag before you find the stolen good.
Good point, though this video talks about AirTag misuse.
And in the case of women being stalked? In that case the person should be notified
No, Apple specifically discourages using AirTags for theft recovery. Its only legitimate use is for items you lost yourself. In any case, the whole theft use-case is a moot point. It's now possible to clone an AirTag and spoof its location. The would-be thief can send you on a wild goose chase and disappear with your goods in the meantime. You're better off with a more robust tracker for stolen stuff.
Why test this only on someone without an iPhone? Lol
Hi, thanks for comment! Well it’s stalking test, so doesn’t matter mobile OS 😉
CyberNews well it sort of does. How do you expect Apple to be able to notify a person with an android phone an air tag is following them? You don’t even test how long it would take a person with an iPhone to be notified of the airtag. It sort of seems like you were more interested an a sensationalized video in the hopes of views (rather disappointing huh?) rather than actually testing the device.
@@CainBuckler the air tag will play a sound when it detects it’s not with the device it is registered to after a certain amount of time. I believe I heard around 3 days.
How does it make it any better? By 3 days the person will probably already know where you live and your schedule .
So stalk someone that owns an android, got it
That’s why they made a AirTag is Gide lost an stolen stuff why should they get notify of what they just stole
If a drugs cartel and paparazzi
can find you, without on tracking what’s the worries about this stalking if they not need it.
Wasn’t helpful, doesn’t tell you how to prevent being tracked
Could we expect a review of Samsung Tag?
Yes, very soon we'll do a bluetooth tracker comparison! :)
What if someone steels my bag and then is alerted that their is an airtag inside. Not good. There should not be alerts to let robbers know they are being tracked.
True, I guess it would be hard to determine if someone is a robber, especially altering settings if they took your bag with your phone in... :0
This is great for my Alzheimer’s mom.
Good thing to hide in your car incase it gets stolen
That's a great idea, only if the thief doesn't have an iPhone, or they'll get a notification. :)
I saw in another video UA-cam that a woman did put one in her car and her car got stolen. I don’t like this thing at all! Some butt put one on me and stalked me!
Why are americans paranoid about being stalked? Is it a cultural thing?
With all the unwarranted tracking, and collecting of data in recent years can you blame anyone for being a little paranoid? :D
@Aaliyah 3 , hundreds of thousands die of car accidents per year. Should we ban cars?
So, back to the topic, my google search showed 78 women. Shall we ban airtags?
@@cybernews , shall we get a little paranoid about all the hundreds of thousands that die each year on car accidents?
It's a *tracking device* what do you expect? Good Lord.
Sure, but it can be misused.
@@cybernews what can't? Anything can be misused. You can use a car to follow someone, should cars he banned?
@@cybernews So can GPS trackers and alternatives from Samsung and Tile but yet you pick on the AirTag.
I don't like that it tells you you're being tracked. I was going to hide it in my motorcycle but why would I want it to tell the thief it has a tracker in it. Literally the dumbest "feature" they could have added.
Yeah, I think they were trying to avoid unwanted tracking, so it isn't really ideal in this scenario. Although, it isn't clear exactly how quickly they would be notified, so you would still have a short time frame to notify the police of your items last location.
@@cybernews Exactly, thanks for the video though. It puts that to the test in a way and it doesn't seem to notify immediately. I bought four of them lol so I'll put it to the test as well!
Pretty sure women (and men) being sex trafficked is a bigger issue than finding your motorcycle. I get what you mean but reword that shit ffs
Alot of women are getting these notifications on their phones nobody cares about your bike. We care about women's safety
I guess they're only to be bought for lost items not so much stolen. If you lost your keys what are the chances of you finding them again without a tracking device. They should disclose that on the box.
This video was not helpful at all, lengthy for no reason because it’s just 8 minutes expanding on “you could be getting tracked” not how to find out or how to prevent it
Longest intro ever…
They/them? This is getting ridiculous... 🙄
Cute girl at the gym? Now you can find out exactly where she lives.
cheap marketing from apple. this technology is old and overprices. bluetooth btw. you can get a real gps tracker with simcard and magnet for cheaper than this.. lmao
Apple not goog, apple bad company
Which company do you use instead?
Lol at the non gender neutral pronoun slip up at 4:45. 🤣
