Apple's widely rumored and leaked, hotly anticipated AirTags - what are they, where are they, when will we get them, but much, much more importantly, how will they work… I mean, exactly, crucially, critically, when it comes to protecting our security and privacy?
How will Apple make it so we can find our keys, wallets, bags…. all of our stuff, without anyone, any store, any stalker, trying to use them to find us?
Well, here’s the answer…

And I'm here for it. 💯
Thanks so much, Andy! Anything else you'd like to see?
I second. The interview about (no) chip shortages for apple was worth 2 subs.
Airtags are so worried about our privacy, they’ve decided not to exist.
Airtags. The easy way to track your partner, as Rene said, just pop it in their bag
@@philydelphia8646 When people find foreign tracker-jacker Airtags in their belongings, they should dispatch them to services that fly 'em all over the world -- like the flight attendant Philomène who lugged the garden gnome around the world in Amélie (2001). That would send the appropriate message to the tracker. 😃
@@philydelphia8646 it will scream if it’s away from its owner for a certain amount of time and apparently it will notify u when someone else’s airbag is following u
A thief can grab your property, then mark their current location as home or work and they will then get a notification that your airtag is covertly tracking them in your stolen property. They would cause it to ‘sound off’ then they find it and toss the tag, voila. That will teach you for trying to be a stalker. Basically, Apple has decided to lump all their customers into the creeper category when actually they just want to secure their property. In other words it’s worthless as a theft deterrent. Sorry but true.
That skillshare sponsorship drop was so smooth I forgot the video was about AirTags lol.
I’ve grown smarter again, happens literally every single time I watch Rene’s videos.
Hey, thank you! Anything you'd like to see next?
@@ReneRitchie hey Ritchie love your videos man! Can you try like a new video concept like covering the history of certain apple products?
@@ReneRitchie How about what does Apple do against privacy that we should be concerned about?
@@ReneRitchie You sir are doing amazingly well IMO, I don’t even have a request, I just relax, sit back, and enjoy your content, whether it’s on here or on Nebula. You have no idea how much you’re changing people’s lives. Keep educating.
Ok, this made me realize how awesome these could really be... I’m sold.
I like Apple's description of things better... "It just works" ----- way less complicated than Rene's excellent descriptions - even if I don't understand them :)
I need AirPods to be “findable” while in their case like ASAP
I can not stress enough how much I love your videos! The explanation is made SO well
There's still one danger I foresee that has nothing to do with privacy at all: The signals the tags send out, I guess, _will_ be identifiable as an Apple AirTag thing. A "bad person" could be quite interested in locating _any_ AirTagged items whatsoever, because, well: The items are implicitly of worth to someone (or they wouldn't be AirTagged) who lives in Apple's ecosystem (so probably does not belong to the absolute lowest income bracket of the population). So I think you'll see "AirTag Scanner" type apps for Android pop up soon after AirTags are introduced to the world - and those apps will find you AirTagged stuff. Nothing about privacy. The bad person doesn't care whose wallet it is, as long as it's got some cash inside, for example.
You sir, have a really good point.
In places with very little Bluetooth, it could be an issue, provide someone was willing to basically to the equivalent of walk a beach with a metal detector on the off chance they come within BTLE range of an active tag? I'm not sure the economics of that work out, or extend beyond what observation would be equivalent to?
@@ReneRitchie Agreed. Still: You _will_ find people with metal detectors on beaches even today. And I think kiddies with 0.99$ AirTags Scanner apps are a bit of a larger scale, no? :)
Patrick Armbruster But AirTags aren't the only thing like this that exist. Just because someone receives a ping doesn't mean the source is an AirTag.
@@screenPhiles Yeah, no. It's not just a "ping". There will be some sort of start or end bit identifying it as an AirTag. Otherwise an iPhone wouldn't know whether to report it as an AirTag found or not.
I just want to know how to attach this to my Ridge wallet
Sadly, there probably isn’t an elegant solution. However you can use a tracker like air tags for other things ✌️
I hope this extremely low power and internet free search function is built in on next iPhone models without needing the iPhone to be powered on, although impressively built, on lost and stolen iPhones where the device is turned off, FIND is useless if not for the activation lock function.
I'm looking forward to this exciting stuff.
I find it interesting how much people worry about an individual stalking them but are totally fine with companies stalking them in extreme detail.
😡This is very upsetting to me! I don’t want to participate with other people’s airtags or anything else popping up on my phone! 😡
Ok now the real question what's the price of it
20$ for 1 piece ? $30? $40? $50?
I’m betting $50. The others in the market are in the $30 range. This one sounds more advanced and since it’s Apple add a bit more to the cost.
Honestly, it’s probably much more likely for someone to use a tile to track you anyway instead of an airtag (if that would happen). It’s much cheaper
I come from the future, Rene is spot on what airtags came to be
Lecoq, I've been looking for you for decades and THIS is when you decide to spend your time? Surely you remember it's this '21 where the meteor hit?!
Or... Is that why you're here?
You can't save them.
Please.
Your mother and I are worried.
Come home, son.
😡I don’t have an airtag but I was really really really irritated that I rec’d a message on my iPhone that an airtag was with me!!! I find this very very upsetting!!! I don’t trust any of this mess! 😡 I don’t care what anyone says…getting an unwanted message on “my” iPhone about someone else’s airtag is concerning to me…someone somewhere is tracking me! 😡
At4:28 you said “finders opt in”, I think that’s not entirely accurate. You can opt out, but by default Apple has automatically opted everyone IN to their network and it’s not entirely obvious to non Air Tag users that they are enabling Apple and their network of others peoples devices through your phone.
So, if I lose my keys while hiking in remote areas and there isn’t anyone within range to ping that location I would not be able to find them?
Thorough clear and concise breakdown. Had to subscribe.
3:25 Actually, it was the Soviet Navy who was pinging away to try to drive the Red October into a submarine trap.
I agree 100% with what apple did, but if somebody steals my clothes, backpack, keys etc and they find the airtag, they can just throw it away. almost defeats the purpose of it because half the reason most will be buying it, is for theft location
They should create a warning pop up if someone else’s tags keep pinging around you for days when you don’t own them.
If everything said in the video is accurate, apple would have no way of knowing....every 15 minutes the identifier amd "blob" are different and as far as Apple is concerned is a different person as far as they know....they would have no way to correlate that information.....they do this on purpose to support privacy (half makes me ashamed to be typing this on a note phone....I own both but emulators keeps samsung as one of the 2 I own)
Thank you for breaking this down and answering my security concerns. This video helped me put tremendously!
I hope Apple makes it possible to set an airtag to an “always on you” mode, so if you drop your keys or someone steal your wallet, an alarm will go off on your iPhone. Lets say the alarm would go off if the key is more then 5 meters away from you, when you are not at home (I trust apple to figure out the details).
Thank you once again. I love the way you deep-dive into the technology. Your superpowers of predicting what the naysayers and conspiracy pirates will spew, are other-worldly. Thanks for stretching my mind.
Love your videos. Straight to the point, no fluff. Decent puns
What madman keeps their house key separate from their car key?
I really don't like these AirTags. I would surely use them in my pocket/keys/car... but the idea of someone to put one in my car to follow my movements is scary...
This is so cool Wish all company’s did this much for privacy
I believe a proximity alert will be much better then detection over miles. Something like if you go to far to notice you, and if you want to leave that airtag home, to notice you and maybe untag it temp. from your phone, and when you came back to auto connect. If I forgot my keys at work and I am at home, how that can help?
So he’s talking about people not knowing who you are & acting like this device isn’t flawed.
😡This thing can absolutely be used to stalk & track someone! If it is placed on someone or in their belongings or to their vehicle for example…you can “find them” by “finding it”!! 😱 😡Apple full well knows this! I don’t like this thing or the way it is designed!! That’s why they have a “disclaimer” that says if you feel unsafe contact the authorities! 😡
Keep those spaces timings, they are charismatic xD
Once Airtags come out, whether I buy any or not, I will probably put a sign on my home saying "Valuable Items in this home are protected by hidden Airtags."
Did Apple let you buy your unit WITHOUT providing your AppleID?
They refused to sell to anyone here, unless we purchased on our AppleID account.
Tracking starts the moment you attempt to buy the unit(s)
They FINALLY came out…. And you’re spot on!
Thank you Rene. I learn so much from your videos!
Oh, I want a big belly burger..... with cheese and bacon. Wait, pinging away like the Red October? I thought that was 1 ping and 1 ping only?!?
The thing I don't like about Samsung's galaxy smart tag is if they go out of the owner's Bluetooth range it connects to any other galaxy in the range of Bluetooth and piggybacks off their mobile data (or home wifi)
And I can't find an opt out button in any of the settings and I've been through a lot of menus.
I just realised these packets are so tiny it doesn't matter
The Samsung galaxy tag is secured with hardware and software Encryption. It is paired to your device only, and only you see it. As with all products, you need to have the latest security upgrade on your Phone.
Why would the phones give out gps info with you giving authorization
Tiny electromagnetic hand! I love that!
Thanks for making your videos shorter, genuine feedback
I wouldn't worry about BT beacons being used to determine your location. If you really wanted to track someone, it's super easy nowadays. All you have to do is go to the local big box store and buy, with cash, 2 cheap phones & prepaid SIMs. Set them up with a burner Google account, either previously made in a public computer or on the device, over public WiFi so there are no IP logs to tie back to, say, your house. Once setup is complete, shut them down and full charge the batteries, preferably again using a public charge point. Then you just have to get one of the silented phones taped to their vehicle or, better yet, slipped into a bag that they are carrying. Once planted, you use the other phone to access Google's "Find my Device" feature to locate the target. Just remember to erase all fingerprints from the installed device in cases it's found, both electronic and physical and it would defeat the purpose of hiding your digital trail if you leave a nice big thumbprint on the display.
I wish the AirTags will be super durable with water resistance. If it’s made weak than it’s not going to be very useful
S H Which is probably why they wouldn't be made weak?
He should have watched a Skillshare session on BLE tech and tracking. FCC requires every device to be assigned a unique address that can be tracked with a BLE scanner installed on any device other than an Apple product. There is an instructible on how to make a BLE scanner, but the same scanner can be used to find your phone also.
So, some guy with a BLE scanner identifies the AirTag identifier device type and says “here’s a person that can afford Apple stuff” and the normal BLE signal tells him roughly how far away he is from your stuff so he can rob you.
Think it changes it id every few hours and don't thin it tells you its id so you have no hint what it is.
So how about this scenario
Person a wants to track person b. Person a modify airtag so their speaker won't function (phisically broke the speaker). Person b use android so they won't know if there's airtag following him.
Do apple think about these scenario?
Yes I know there's tile. But I just wonder because you know apple really love talking about privacy and stuff.
If you break the speaker you would be breaking the whole tag
@@RedDestroyer4 well I'm pretty sure you can open it without breaking the whole thing
@@edbertkhovey no you can’t because they glue them shut and there is no speaker grill the whole white back piece is the speaker
@@RedDestroyer4 glue can be remove by applying heat tho. I Don't think they use super glue to glue it together
I wonder if you can report a malicious Airtag. I mean yes, there are other tracking devices, but Airtags are cheap and easy to use when your target is an iPhone user or living in a region with a lot of iPhone users.
I work on PKI (Public Key Infrastucture) software and have extensive iOS dev experience (since pre-app store). You nailed explaining this.
You’re outstanding
The airtags sound amazing, but I have so many questions...
1. How easy will it still be to find a lost airtag item without the Precision Finding functionality in the Find My app? For instance, I have an iPhone XS Max (without the U1 chip).
2. Does the airtag have a button that if pressed will sound an alert on the iPhone?
3. Will the iPhone alert you if you accidentally leave behind various airtag items, such as a wallet or car keys for instance?
4. Is the battery able to be changed by the user, or will it require an Apple Service agent to replace the battery for you?
Just pining my iPhone from my watch saves me so much time and stress. Not sure the tags will be useful for me as a classic find my keys, more for dog collar, kids scooter, my bike:0
Yeah, the ping is fantastic. I want it on everything. You?
The way you’ve explained, Tim Cook may just show us this link to explain us at the keynote 😃.
Apple in 2018: “Privacy to us is a human right. It's a civil liberty,”
Apple in 2021: "We present you Airtags, magic way to track location of your neighbors, your ex or you can be stalker for fun."
Did you even watch the video?
@@scb2scb2 dude. Imagine you put this in your bike and a thief steals it. After 5-10 minutes the speakers will start making sound thinking that he's being stalked and he will remove it. How would you track it then?🙄
@@scb2scb2 imagine this second scenario: You are going home, but a stalker puts it in your bag and then when you reach home, only then it will notify you that there is a suspicious tracker in your bag.
Too late, stalker got your home location.
Even worse if you have got an android. Because you won't even get a message.
@@scb2scb2 More scarier: Thief removes it's battery and Stalker removes it's speaker.
What if someone uses their AirTag to track someone by putting it in their bag or something.
Thanks for the information Rene however I still find these air tags to be kind of an unnecessary product
One of my favorites books, the movie was... good enough, they both are no longer here... so, cheer up!
my girl placed one on my car how do i find it or disable it?
Hey Rene just wanted to inform some who might see a different phone number under their Apple ID when setting up an airtag. They should try deleting trusted numbers in Password & Security in their Apple ID settings.
I want to see what the future of the U1 is...
You Sir: Genius
Thank you! Are you going to be getting AirTags?
@@ReneRitchie Yes, I do have a high interest to purchase. I actually appreciate them for taking the time to perfect this accessory. I just hope they don’t let us down.
If thats true Rene that you could use AI on your phone to locate the tag would be incredible and sounds like sci-fi too.
Soooo if i put this on my bike, and someone steals it i am 'stalking' them... they get a alert and audio signal and can remove the device since apple will helpfully explain it ?
just one question 🙋🏻♂️ when my keys with airtag are lost and someone with an iphone comes in my airtag range will it only send me a location if that person’s iphone has bluetooth turned on? thank you for answer
Used Android for 10 yrs. And a staunch Intel/ android user. And an Apple hater. I now have an M-1 Apple Air for business. Waiting for I Phone. This year. The walled Garden is beautiful and secure.
Nice work! As always.
AirTags anti-stalking feature DOES NOT WORK. People are demonstrating this online.
How easily will they stick to anything?
So..is Airtag less reliable to find it in markets with very low Apple devices..like India ?
Are these going to work as good as find my airpods? 😂
Rene, i dont always understand you but i trust you ha.
If my misses phone is not compatible (iphone 10) can i set them all up from my phone and them just be the one who needs to do the searching?
As we family shared i will no her every move already 😂
If an Apple user steals something of yours though, they will be told that they are being tracked and then they will disable the AirTag -which renders them useless to me
Thanks for breaking down the details on how the crypto stuff works. It seems quite simple, yet secure. I'm sold! Keep it up!
Thanks for watching! I'm getting three or four, I think. You?
@@ReneRitchie Yeah, I'll probably get quite a few of them. Three of them will go into my kids backpacks, that's for sure! Days like these I manage to lose my wallet all the time. The one and only reason I need it nowadays (in these Apple Pay days) is when driving, which doesn't happen that often during the darn pandemic. Maybe it could be worth giving the cat one as well...
well, what do you have to say about Rob Braxman tech?
in his privacy, that's not iPhone video
Why would the phone automatically give out gps info without aproval
All right. Great language, poetic. Thanks!
How much of my data will the air tags of others use?
How you get home without house keys? Aren’t they usually attached the key ring that has your car keys? 😛
Not always, and some cars (and houses) don't have physical keys any more. Or maybe you biked, walked, or took public transport? Why are you plot-holing me, Jeffery? 😂
@@ReneRitchie I’m just joshing. You sold me on getting these.
Stalkers dream !!
Can you make a video about skin tags next ty bye
Amazing educational content simplified. This is why I started following his channel and I have never been disappointed. okay I am not advertising for any other platform he may be associated with, im just sayin'.
Hahaha. Thank you! Am I really associated with too much?
Thanks Rene....that was very helpful...it will help me make a more informed buying decision
Oh, great! Which way are you leaning?
@@ReneRitchie i think I may have use for them....I know my wife does....just don’t mention I said that....it’s too cold to sleep outside right now😂
they need this tech in the airpods.
Battery life? Will Apple allow you to replace the battery?
Would you mind providing a link to where I can order that sweater jacket?
Another great post Rene. Can you expand on where else Apple may go (some pun intended) with the AirTags? I’ve seen some information on granted patents indicating the AirTags could be used to track body movement and positions. I immediately think of the CGI outfits you see some actors wear with the dot markers. Then my mind wanders to the rumoured VR glasses. I quickly go down the speculation rabbit hole. (Edit: correcting type-o’s)
Rene, regarding the U1 chip. Will the airbags work with iPhones that don’t have one. I have an iPhone SE (2nd Gen) that I hope to keep for a few years. I don’t want to have to upgrade now, just to use the airbags. Additionally, I have an Apple Watch Series 6 with the U1 chip. Is apple going to extend the Find My feature so we can search for Airtags via our watches? Thanks for your info.
… so now I gotta go learn me what an elliptic curve integrated encryption scheme is ... !
What makes Apple think I'm not already losing everything trapped in my tiny apartment?
You look great brother! Been exercising? Keep up the great content good sir 🤙🏼
Hey Rene, I just wanted to ask you about this, I was living in place A for 2 years, now I live in place B, when I go to find my, I currently appear always in place A, but I haven’t been there for a week, I go out and my location Chages, I go to my new house and the location of the old house is my active location, why could this be?
Rene is one of the few you tubers (especially tech ones) who genuinely compel me to snag that like button because the content is so concise, informative, and factual. Genuinely on another level.
The William Shatner of Tech Bloggers.
We both grew up in Montreal!
After all those rumors, I think Apple is not going to make any new devices or even to redesign older one :D
There are over a billion iphones, so there is reason for proportionally greater concern compared to existing systems with far less coverage. Apple has had their fair share of zero days, so there is reason for concern. It wouldn't do to poo poo them.
Hey Ray, how are you doing today?
Hang on... you have to opt in to the find my network?
