Joel, I enjoy your vids and your enthusiasm and common sense. I could not live in CA due to my extensive collection of 30 round pieces. But hold your ground.
IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, you can use foreign magazines in your Saiga (the OEM ones are made in Russia in the first place) as long as you don't alter you rifle in anyway to make it "non-sporting" as defined by 925(d)(3). The one you really need to be careful on top of CA AWB is the barrel thread, most Saiga comes with threaded barrel that is "reasonably permanently" capped to make the rifle 922r compliance, and you don't want to remove that cap before you are 100% positive about how the 922r law works. And you don't want to put night vision scope on Saigas as well.....per 925(d)(3) BTW, do you mind sharing the location of the range you used in the video? I live in SACTO and would like to find a range that allows dynamic maneuvers.
+holmiumh Thanks for the outstanding and informative comment. I really appreciate it. The P2K Range is in El Cajon California (www.p2krange.com/) . I've taught there for over a decade and been a member for over 30 years. For dynamic movement, you might consider finding some public land that permits shooting. We just spent a day on BLM land shooting rifle videos, one of which should be posted today. It's a bit more of a drive, but the freedom of movement and action you gain is worth it.

Well sir I live in the great state of Alaska and I also own 762 by 39 Sega California model hunting rifle 10 round and have no complaints about this weapon
I'm in CA too. I would love an ar but will never buy one as long as I'm in this state. It's really not worth all the money if you have to have a bullet button. Instead I have a mini-14 and a saiga in 308. Now I'm trying to decide between a mini-30 or saiga in 7.62x39.
UA-camr 1 I've had both really love the mini 30 though, but in TX 30 round mags are legal and fun to shoot with. If I was you I'd go mini 30 in California.
I go to California one week per year to soak up sun, relax and swim in the ocean. I would never live there, ever. It's way over priced, way too unconstitutional and good people are basically hostages in their own homes.
I chose out a .223 saiga as my go to rifle last year. The saiga is just a blast to shoot and I always get questions about it at the range haha. I've done a number of things to it to make it more effective, such as a standard stock for a shorter LOP (im way short), modified G2 trigger, a krebs ambi safety so i can reach it from all the way back in that horrible sporter trigger position, AK handguard and ultimak rail. Eventually it'll have a magwell conversion to use AR15 magazines. Just a few mods, and the saiga became my favorite rifle.
Very articulate many good points were made. You have my subscription. The "FightLight SCR" is a similar concept. It's a featureless AR 15 with an english stock like this Saiga AK. You should check it out
Good point, I can see it both ways. I like the logic from your point of view. Different than how I feel in the northern part of Indiana but I understand where you're coming from. Thanks for the reply.. Cheers
Probably one of the smartest gun owners I've ever seen in my life. Every point you made was excellent especially on how you live in a liberal state where you gotta make due with what you've got. Never understood how people can be so disconnected to say "just leave" or even dumber. "Dont comply"
I have one of these. I'm in the UK. Mine has all the normal AK features BUT is single shot straight pull bolt action. Politicians have to justify their existence somehow and making up ridiculous rules to pander to Joe Pleb is always their go to response.
Awesome Rifle, I'm looking at picking one of these up to go with my SKS, I read somewhere that if you install the Bullet guide it violates 922r, wondering if anybody knows more about this? If I pick one up am I stuck with the Saiga mags unless I want to do a full 922r conversion?
dude i live in CA and yes the AR is highly restricted, [10 round magazine are the most annoying ] and yeah i can relate to u alot, im not forced to live in CA but i cant afford to move to another state even doe i wish ;[ great video and suscribed! hope to see more videos from u
Thanks for the great video. Its good to see more CA shooters. Thinking of getting this rifle soon after my taxes come in. What is the length of pull on the stock?
Can someone quickly explain conversions with the Saiga? What are you converting and why? I'm going to a gun show tomorrow and I want an AK. I was set in a WASR 10 until I learned about the Saiga. Which Saiga is a good one?
I keep one of those as my truck gun, 20 inch barrel. Not so scary for the over zealous cops. They used to be very cheap. I've been well please with it. Light weight, reliable, accurate. The monte carlos style stock is very common for any one to use. AR s are great but this has it's place.
in New Zealand we cant have a rifle with 10 rnd mag or higher unless u have a special license, but u don't need a licence to buy Mags so i got the 20 rnd 308 sagia mags
I just traded my Zastava AK for a Saiga. Can't wait to get it! Btw, would you recommend converting it into an AK? Is that even legal in CA? I'm just happy I finally have a Russian AK...or at least something close to it.
Glad to find your video, you did a great job on this video. Sorry for you being in Commiefornia. My Saiga full conversion is fantastic, accepts all mags, it's a sweet smooth shooter and has been flawless. As far as trolls saying to move I understand you and you got the best Saiga you can legally have but there is another level that comes with a full (legal 922r) conversion. :) Subscribing to your channel to watch more of your vids!
on the saiga 12 website, you can buy a pistol grip/telescoping stock for only about 70 dollars. if you do, you just have to take out like 2 screws in the original stock to take it off and the other one just screws right in. Really simple, it's what i did with mine because i didn't want to mess around with buying all of the parts to move the trigger up and all that shit.
Also have a question is there any suggestions where I could pick up more 10-round clips for that particular model if I don't want to modify it thank you
mr. gun guy before to day i never desired an ak. but that version could change my mind if they fixed the one thing about the old ak's that bugged me... so my question is does that version eliminate the barrel flex that plagued the old ak design....
I actually disagree about not wanting to look military if things ever went south. In my opinion I'd want all my neighbors and myself looking military operator/ contractor if anything ever happened. I kind of laugh writing this, but if bad guys come to my area I'd rather them see a bunch of operator military looking guys rather then folks with hunting rifles wearing flip flops and drinking herbal tea. Just my opinion respectfully.
+TheDudeAbides M I would agree with you completely. The only reason I made the comment was the historical record in such areas as New Orleans during Katrina. The main concern is not drawing unwanted attention from the government. I think it can be argued either way. My thought, and I could be completely wrong here, is that government is going to be more likely to go after a group of military looking civilians than those who look less so. On the other hand, maybe they would be less likely to mess with you if you looked like you could take them on effectively. Who knows? I can't speak from experience, so I'm for whatever works. Thanks for the great comment and for watching. I appreciate it.
Hell, Wifey & I live within walking distance of 2 trailer parks & a Section 8 public housing development. Needless to say, we hear gunfire at the PARK as well as the afore mentioned areas. So we're kind of stuck when it comes to either looking more military or less combative. I want to be well armed for either types of criminal (government or otherwise, foreign & domestic). I started with a couple .22-LR's, a .38-SPL & a 12-ga. Mossy 500. But I still would like something with more versatility, longer range & stopping power. But are the 7.62's harder to find ammo for?
LEO1WOLF 7.62x39 brass cased ammo is expensive, but steel cased ammo is cheap to buy. You might find some cheap military surplus brass cased ammo but you have to clean your rifle after shooting it because it’s corrosive.
Nicely done video. I put money down on the 7.62 x 39 version to go with my Saiga 308. I don't have any plans to do a 922R for the same reason I sold my M+M M10 in 7.62 x 39, the Bullet Cage (lets call it what it is on an AK variant in CA) is horrible to access to change magazines. I'm looking forward to getting them both to the range with a couple of CZ pistols for a fun day.
bought one before the sandy hook killing for 400 bucks and converted it to an ak pattern (minus barrel and guide as of now) for around 50 bucks and never looked back
I have one they are cool and you can modify or get the kit to make them accept AK mags but I haven't even shot it getting a straight AK so selling mine
Hey gun guy I'm also in SD i just purchased the saiga 762x39.. I'm in search pf a few 10 rd mags. Can u recomed a gun shop in SD that's moderately priced... Thanks...
Joel. I recently got the chance to try a Saiga and gotta tell you that I really enjoyed it! However cant seem to find them. Know of any places here CA who might have some in stock?
+Max Bec Hi Max. If memory serves me correctly, Obama has caused them to be banned from importation. So, I don't think you can get them new anymore. Until we have a new president, and hopefully a conservative one, you would probably have to try the used market.
Great video, was checking one of these out at the local gun shop here in CA and it just appears to be a rugged machine! I know they make them in 5.56/2.23 as well. Would you say you prefer the 7.62 over a standard AR round?
snapcord Not necessarily. The .556/223 round is a solid performer. It's also nice if you live in a city, since your over-penetration problem will be much less with .556/223. My rifle is in 7.62x39 for two reason: I bought it from a buddy and that's the way it was and I wanted a light rifle I could hunt mule deer and hogs with. The 7.62x39 is a better round for that purpose.
I have one and me and some buddies are planning on going out on a wild hog hunt here in Ca. Right now we're planning on going with some Mosins and Lee Enfields, what's your take on 7.62x39 for a hog in the 90-120lbs range?
George McNerney Hi George. It's a 3 point sling. They are fairly common and made by several manufacturers. I picked this one up at Turners. It's very comfortable and allows full access to the rifle including firing the rifle while using the sling.
Can you please let me know what kind of trigger job did you do? I don't want to move my trigger group and put a pistol grip on it. But if I can make my pull a little bit smoother it would be great. Thank you!
Hi GunGuy! First of all, thank you for the great video, I live in LA area and have the same exact Saiga rifle. How do you clean it? First of all what kind of bore guide do you use? Thank you in advance.
Buffy McMuffin or you can look at the murder capital of america. Chicago has the most strict gun laws but does that stop criminals? The answer is no, no it does not.
Buffy McMuffin or unchecked 3rd world immigration. There is a reason these countries are 3rd world. Because the people who inhabit them are not very smart. Africa will never advance beyond a hunter gatherer state with out foreign intervention, be it European, Arab or asian.
The Saiga Sporter is one of my favorites. Great choice and video. Joel, do you know if this is still California legal in it’s current form as of May 2018 or does the mag release have to be disabled?
Nah its considered featureless with no adjustable stock and no pistol grip. If you get a pistol grip you can then maglock the magazine release mechanism or put a fin grip on the PG.
I have not personally hunted with 7.62x39, but I have met several dear hunters who hunt with SKS, Saiga and other such rifles. They tend to keep shots under 200 yards and do quite well. With the scope I mounted on it, my Saiga keeps 2" groups at 100 yards. That is plenty accurate for hunting.
CA compliant AKs are so hard to find these days. I tried looking on every online gunsite that ships to CA and most of them are sold out. I even look on GunBroker and there's some that are over $2k. Wish I can find one that's around $1200 or even $1000
Possibly dumb question. In California is the Saiga considered a Assualt Weapon. My Father in law said he can't do a normal change of possession because it's an assault weapon. But I don't believe it is. Same specs as the firearm in the video
I have a saiga 762.39 with a 20 inch barrel. Are they harder to find or something because finding info on that specific rifle has been in vain. Would love if anyone can help me out!

I go to California one week per year to soak up sun, relax and swim in the ocean. I would never live there, ever. It's way over priced, way too unconstitutional and good people are basically hostages in their own homes.
Appolo Geticks that pretty much sums it up ! 👍
Comifornia*
Appolo with this coronavirus I think a whole lot of people are going to be stuck in their homes. Messed up right
I chose out a .223 saiga as my go to rifle last year.
Cheers
I own a saiga 12 shot gun and I can affirm it's the best thing I ever spent money on!
It's a fine rifle, I've got one as well. Very accurate.
Probably one of the smartest gun owners I've ever seen in my life. Every point you made was excellent especially on how you live in a liberal state where you gotta make due with what you've got. Never understood how people can be so disconnected to say "just leave" or even dumber. "Dont comply"
Excellent video and review. I am glad I got mine when I did, good luck getting one for under a grand today if you can find one.
I live in NYC, I hunt north of the city. I hear you, we have similar laws.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Its not ugly at all. I think it looks great
well said! I live in California too - People's Socialist Republik of Santa Monica. No gun stores within miles.
+Tom Chandler I live in riverside, ca and plan on moving to Arizona :)
Martin Retting in Culver City would be your closest ....
steve41557 gun shop right in Culver city on washington, martin redding I believe is the name of it.
Now do you need to turn in your magazine now?
I have one of these. I'm in the UK. Mine has all the normal AK features BUT is single shot straight pull bolt action.
Politicians have to justify their existence somehow and making up ridiculous rules to pander to Joe Pleb is always their go to response.
Where can i find 10rd mags for this ? I just bought one second hand and i can't seem to find extra mags
the appearance is why I have a wood stocked blued steel mini 14 and mini 30.
I remember when these were like 350 bucks and always on the wall at the local gun shops because people thought they were ugly and no one wanted them.
My first gun when I was 19 in 2011. Can't find them anymore in the US
dude i live in CA and yes the AR is highly restricted, [10 round magazine are the most annoying ] and yeah i can relate to u alot, im not forced to live in CA but i cant afford to move to another state even doe i wish ;[
great video and suscribed! hope to see more videos from u
Will those Saiga stocks fit onto any other akm?
Also have a question is there any suggestions where I could pick up more 10-round clips for that particular model if I don't want to modify it thank you
Did you ever mount any Optics yet?
What Rail Mount fits the Saiger side mount?
mr. gun guy before to day i never desired an ak. but that version could change my mind if they fixed the one thing about the old ak's that bugged me... so my question is does that version eliminate the barrel flex that plagued the old ak design....
+GunGuyTV Its a dam shame that most people are more afraid of the government then they are of the bad guy.
+Will Robinson the government is the bad guy
Hell, Wifey & I live within walking distance of 2 trailer parks & a Section 8 public housing development. Needless to say, we hear gunfire at the PARK as well as the afore mentioned areas. So we're kind of stuck when it comes to either looking more military or less combative. I want to be well armed for either types of criminal (government or otherwise, foreign & domestic). I started with a couple .22-LR's, a .38-SPL & a 12-ga. Mossy 500. But I still would like something with more versatility, longer range & stopping power. But are the 7.62's harder to find ammo for?
LEO1WOLF
7.62x39 brass cased ammo is expensive, but steel cased ammo is cheap to buy.
Can u recomed a gun shop in SD
that's moderately priced...
Thanks...
+GunGuyTV Well that explains why it's so difficult. I'll look into secondary market.
Easy kill.
What kind of sling are you using? Does it allow for you to fire the rifle while it is slung around your body.
George McNerney Hi George. It's a 3 point sling. They are fairly common and made by several manufacturers. I picked this one up at Turners. It's very comfortable and allows full access to the rifle including firing the rifle while using the sling.
My saiga 223 is as about as small as a deer rifle gets lol have the 12 gauge too
Can't belive the price jump on them now holy cow
Can you please let me know what kind of trigger job did you do? I don't want to move my trigger group and put a pistol grip on it. But if I can make my pull a little bit smoother it would be great. Thank you!
+Nikolay Grishakin Hi Nikolay: I'm didn't do it myself, so I can't speak to the specifics. My gunsmith, Mike Hagen, did the job.
Hi GunGuy! First of all, thank you for the great video,
I live in LA area and have the same exact Saiga rifle.
How do you clean it?
First of all what kind of bore guide do you use?
Thank you in advance.
California - because recent events in Paris show how effective restrictive guns laws are!
I liked your review on the saiga....now my hands are itching for one.....haha!
Buffy McMuffin Imagine my shock!
Yeah and events in the South show how effective open gun rules are.
+GunGuyTv roughly how much did it cost you to have the trigger mechanism worked on and the bullet guide put in?
The Saiga Sporter is one of my favorites. Great choice and video. Joel, do you know if this is still California legal in it’s current form as of May 2018 or does the mag release have to be disabled?
Nah its considered featureless with no adjustable stock and no pistol grip. If you get a pistol grip you can then maglock the magazine release mechanism or put a fin grip on the PG.
NY Here. Also My choice. Now for the SU16, for a 223 version
Thanks for the honest review. I noticed that Yevgeny Prigozhin just got one of these back from the FSB so I wanted to know about it.
Do you or does anyone out there, really, honestly hunt with a Saiga? What do you hunt? How successful have you been?
I have not personally hunted with 7.62x39, but I have met several dear hunters who hunt with SKS, Saiga and other such rifles. They tend to keep shots under 200 yards and do quite well. With the scope I mounted on it, my Saiga keeps 2" groups at 100 yards. That is plenty accurate for hunting.
Nick, How are you locking your action open on your Saiga? Did you have work done one on it to do so?
CA compliant AKs are so hard to find these days. I tried looking on every online gunsite that ships to CA and most of them are sold out. I even look on GunBroker and there's some that are over $2k. Wish I can find one that's around $1200 or even $1000
as i watched, i could help, but think how much at times you sound like Jeff Goldblum
Possibly dumb question. In California is the Saiga considered a Assualt Weapon. My Father in law said he can't do a normal change of possession because it's an assault weapon. But I don't believe it is. Same specs as the firearm in the video
Have you taken the Saiga out Hog Hunting? I hope to Hog hunt someday soon and use my AK.
Get a dragonov buttstock for it. Its state compliant and still gives you a pistol grip
I have a saiga 762.39 with a 20 inch barrel. Are they harder to find or something because finding info on that specific rifle has been in vain. Would love if anyone can help me out!
