You may not be aware of this, but even us Canadians spit when someone mentions California, mainly due to the way their idiotic emissions standards ruined the north American domestic vehicle market.
Greatly enjoyed this vid! So many of the 'operator' play army types take the fun out of watching vids on these types of firearms. You just earned my sub! Thank you
You guys are great. I really enjoyed this video. I'm an "Old Guy" too but I could not hit the side of a barn with any rounds - even if I was leaning against it. Great stuff, great humor and great REAL LIFE reviews. THANK YOU.
Compliance is 100% of the problem. That being said. The WASR seemed to do better which isn't really surprising considering the gun is still in the original design Kalashnikov intended when he designed it. Although he died not that long ago at least we all know what killed him.......He had a goddamn heart attack at the sight of what they have reduced his gun to being. After all Eugene Stoner had a heart attack when the assault weapon ban of 1994 happened. Hey I added a pistol grip shifter made by Browning to my car. Guess that makes my car an assault car. It also has a telescoping antenna that extends with the push of a button and a detachable tire iron and it takes longer to burn through my tank of gas than it does an AR or AK mag and it can detonate on impact if wrecked just right making it an IED. Yeah thats how stupid all those laws are. If I have to loose the RIGHT to own certain firearms or certain attachments then I want everyone else to give up their texting and use of smart phones since there are so many idiots on the roads texting and driving. Amount of times someone has pointed a gun at me with intent to kill ----- 0 Number of times some idiot has almost killed me texting and driving ------- too many to count.
@Jay Quick Lol I actually own the Saiga in the sporting configuration and yes it is a very good rifle. My comment was more about gun control and not really about the whole saiga vs wasr I just noticed it was in the original configuration the saigas in the sporting config have the fire control group moved towards the rear more so it is harder to convert it with original AK furniture which is why it lost points with me and thats from an ownership standpoint. If we are being exactly a purist then we would all say every AK sucked because the originals had milled receivers not stamped and those are really rare now. But I do acknowledge Saiga as being very good rifles even though in the video the wasr seemed to out perform it. I assumed mostly it was the saiga he was using was the problem and not them as a whole otherwise I wouldn't still own mine. Hope that clarifies my position a bit more. Thanks for pointing out how I glossed over how decent saigas are, I didn't realize I had done that.
You keep calling the WASR a pieced together rifle. That's not accurate (pun intended). The WASR is imported as a complete rifle that can only use single stack 10rd mags. Here in the US the magazine well is opened up and some parts are replaced to make it a "US made rifle". The furniture, trigger group, gas piston, and muzzle brake are replaced. As far as accuracy goes, an AK is more than capable of hitting from distance. Check the AK Operator's Union videos of shooting AKs at 300yds.
Love my saiga...I have the 223..5.56......changed the stock to tapco retractable.. instead of the hunting one it came with.... and got some 30 round clips..... .
Gr8 attitude Sir , thank you for the video ...WASR 10, Zhukov stock and long hand guard ,ultimak rail ,bushnell TRS 25 red dot, tapco compensator makes it all work like a dream hammer!
Nice video sir, I just bought a sporter Saiga today, looking forward to pick-it up in 10 days ! Was considering a WASR 10 but can't deal with this bullet button. Just one question, what's the sling you have on yours ?
Hey Joel! My friends and family including myself go shooting there off split mountain rd. often and always thought there should be and annual trash pickup day where everyone who cares about keeping that spot open as a shooting option gets together and picks up all the trash/targets etc. I don't have the means to spread the word to thousands of people but you do via UA-cam. If you ever hear about or decide to spread the word let me know I have some friends who are with me on this. Thanks. Great videos
Love your videos. I am in NY and they are trying their darndest to be more progressive than California. I have two saigas a 223 and a traditional 7.62x39. Adding even a modest scope really cleans these right up. Mine will run 1.5-2" groups all day at 150 yds with an inexpensive 3-9x40
The Saiga trigger is extremely tight because there is a secondary spring mechanism inside of it not sure why I put a G2 trigger assembly on my Saiga with it in the Sporter conversion I have a video on this don't remember the name of it was over for 5 years ago but after I inserted the new G2 trigger was Flawless just like the other AK-47
Thanks for the video. I just picked up a Saiga from Turners a couple of weeks ago. I have to say, fun rifle. Not crazy about the buttstock as it tweaks my wrist a little bit. I did, however, send an email to Magpul asking to help us Califonians still behind enemy lines. I asked if they could make an SGA type of stock for our Saigas. I think that would help the rifle quite a bit, and it would just look kind of cool. Anyway, enjoy the videos. Thanks
+John in CA That's a great idea. If you happen to find out they start making the stock, please let me know. I'll try to get my hands on one and test it.
Re. the Saiga trigger.... it's very easy to take all of the creep out of the second stage of the pull without changing anything else and with the transfer bar and everything still in place. It takes about 5 minutes with a fine warding file (buy a new one of good quality if you don't have one!). Take the receiver cover off and remove the recoil spring and drop the hammer. Note where the sear/disconnector contacts the hammer (there will be a mark in the finish). Operate the mechanism once or twice to see what happens when the trigger is pulled by slowly letting the hammer drop with your thumb. Where that mark is on the top of the hammer is where you need to file a wee bit off the hammer. It's very soft, and files easily. do it just a wee bit at a time and you'll notice that the creep after the second stage is taken up gets smaller and smaller with each adjustment. Once it becomes so small as to be undetectable with your trigger finger, you're done. Still a two stage trigger (nothing wrong with that!) but with NO creep on the second stage. It means that you can really get that 'surprise break' for deliberate shots. WARNING!! Do NOT remove any metal from the sear or disconnector engagement surfaces on the sear/disconnector bar, it's not necessary for this "tune up" and could turn your rifle into a rather unreliable machine gun should the hammer follow the bolt home. This mod doesn't touch those surfaces so is quite safe. A nice crisp two-stage trigger is a delight, and of course very safe because the engagements are huge until that first stage is taken up. My Saiga has about a 3lb first stage and lets off sweet as a nut at about 4 1/2 - 5lbs. Plenty good enough for such a rifle, and a LOT nicer than when it came out of the box. OK, I'm a gun smith, and usually tell people not to mess with their triggers, but this job is so simple and the materials so soft that anyone can do with a little care. If you take too much metal off the hammer, though, you'll end up with a single stage trigger with about 4mmm of creep! LOL If that happens it's either a new hammer or a test of how good you are with a Mig welder!... Have fun!...
Mine should be here soon. Can't wait! :-DSometimes I wonder if the Saiga (in this caliber and configuration) can be almost considered like a modernized SKS with detachable mags. I wonder how the accuracy would compare to an SKS. My first rifle was an SKS. I wasn't real good with, but I also wasn't bad either. I could consistently anihilate pop bottles from about 75 yards away, and jug-sized targets from about 150 yards with open sights. Now I'm thinking, what will I be capable of with a modern Saiga with a Red Dot on it?
+FJ Dubya I took my Saiga to the P2K Range where I teach and shot it at 100 yards from a bench. It consistently held a 1.5" to 2" pattern with cheap Russian ammo. That was with irons. One I put an optic on it, were going to take it back out to the desert for a new video (with range finder this time) and see what it can do with a 4x scope.
Your video about saiga and ak47 are interesting because you was the very first one that told that in the saiga the trigger it was moved and the linkage has made it awful.. thank you to letting us know that so i will try to buy an sks instead of a saiga,,
ecalzo the Saiga .308 was dead nouts accurate. Ithink they are very accurate. Maybe not ar accurate in 7.62x39 but in .308 much more accurate than an ar. Can't go wrong with an sks either.
It seems like pistol grips lend well to better accuracy. It's just better ergonomically in my opinion lol. I certainly shoot better with a pistol grip.
Got a Saiga about 3 years ago for all the reasons you mention. I'm adding a PA 3x on an RS optic mount but no other changes. Any idea how the 2016 CA law changes affect the Saiga? Bullet buttons, "Assault Rifle" registration" etc?
thanks for the video and comparison, just bought the saiga from Turners for a great price, now just need to wait them 10 long days....I like the other traditional pistol grip look but for 200+ less and without the bullet button BS!!! only bad things I heard about the saigas are the mags, you can only use those mags ? do you know about this situation with the clips-magazines??? THANKS!
+BIGMACK WSD Thanks for comment. You can install a bullet guide in your new rifle and then it will accept any AK magazine. I had my gunsmith do it, but it's a pretty simple do-it-yourself project. The other thing that I'm changing with my rifle is the sights. I'm getting older and I simply can't use them effectively any more. I discovered that this week while shooting the Saiga vs AR-15 video that will be uploaded tomorrow. I'm looking for sighting options and will do a follow-up video once I've made the change. The Saigas are outstanding rifles. I really like mine and I'm sure you'll enjoy yours once you take it home. Thanks again for watching!
Were these rifles zeroed before you went to the range? Do you think the pistol grip gave the WASR an advantage? I have both and actually shoot the Saiga better, but both are very accurate and dependable. Not big on the California laws, but if I lived there, I wouldn't move either. Good Video. Thanks.
hi, Gunguy. I'm not very good with conversational English, can you say in the video... What distance are you shooting from carbines? I have a saiga, which was intended for the US market
normal shots for this distance, given that shooting is standing. Do you like your saiga and how you clean it? What kind of cleaning products and how much is spent on cleaning. It would be interesting to see a review about a minimum set for cleaning of such weapons, not so demanding to care
+Tim Liu Hi Tim: Thanks for this. Did you move the trigger group forward to add a pistol grip or did you maintain the original rifle stock without pistol grip?
Still in sporter config without a pistol grip. The g2 from Dinzag basically had the trigger portion milled off and refinished, and the contact surfaces polished.
Google "dinzag fcg", and it's the first result. Click that. Scroll down and you'll find "Saiga Factory Config". He has them available for veprs too, if that's what yours is. Cheers.
Hey GunguyTV, where do you go shooting in the desert? i will like to do the same thing living here in LA i am stuck with going to the ranges but i will like to do so in the desert legally.
+javierlong Hi Javier: I generally shoot on BLM land east of San Diego near Ocotillo wells. It's about a two hour drive for me. I generally hunt in Imperial County on some private land that I've gotten permission to hunt on for the last several years. I'm not sure what there is around Los Angeles and Orange County. You'll probably have to go east quite a way to find open BLM land where you can shoot.
Love the channel and am a s.d. County residence. I go to p2k often but would like to find a good desert spot. Where do you go? Rather where are you ate? Thx
Hello gun guy I am from California and I am having a terrible time finding a rifle I don't know whether to get a mini 30 or a Sega please maybe give a suggestion of a good rifle to have California compliant you know what I'm talking about
i just bought a new production 2015 edition wasr with the blonde wood and all that jaz it looks alot better than the drift wood edition you got LOL (no offence) but mine came with those little mags too... i wanted 10/30 rivited mags so it looks more authentic :(
having to walk all the way down to pick up targets is part of why i prefer to wear exercise and comfortable clothes when out there. I wear cowboy boots however. Fitness shoes do terrible in sand in my experience.
+Dave Peterson Hi Dave: It's a 3 point sling. They are fairly common and made by several manufacturers. I picked this one up at Turners. It's very comfortable and allows full access to the rifle including firing the rifle while using the sling. I think this one was called the Mamba Sling, or something along those lines. Congratulations on your new rifle. I hope this helps and I thank you for watching.
My old WASR 10/63 is very accurate 250 300 yards is a breeze. You just need to zero that gun. Might help to zero the Saiga too because you only hit once.
Come on people there are good folks in California, pity them instead of wishing bad things for all of them.. The problem is far left thinking of many , pray for them to wake up and become real Americans again.
I'm not getting it. Those are both 'decent' rifles. I'm not being rude or 'cute', but can you see the targets? With genuinely 'bad' surplus ammo you should hit 80%
G.G., i also live in a non-free state of n.j. although our laws are not as bad as yours. 15rd. mag's on semi's, no nfa's, no carry, ect. however too bad Saiga's are not imported any more cause as a ak shooter of many types they are a excellent rifle that go thru same testing as there military rifles. even in the IZ132 model with long trigger bar they are very reliable, chrome cold hammer bbl.'s, receivers are heat treated second to none. i 922r my sons and at .21 cent a shot for 30 cal. rd. they are hard too beat. they still sell Vepr's which are still imported that have bull bbl.'s, 1.5mm thick receivers, threaded bbl.'s with welded protectors, nice wood furniture w/ thumb hole stocks, scope side rail, padded but pads. if you are looking for a really good x39 rifle you should check them out before they stop selling them too.
+MegaBait56 Thanks. I'll check them out. My son and I will be at Shot Show in January. We'll do some videos on what's new. I'll make sure to check out the AK variants that are still available while I'm there. You just can't beat them.
thanks for the come back. should check them out "Vepr's" before they are all gone. they are the Cadillac of ak's. come in .223, 7.62x39, .308, 7.62x54 rd.'s that i know of and are in a thumb hole hunting stock so you should be ok in Cali. Plus there wood stocks are beautiful too. happy holidays from the non-free state of n.j.
Love your videos, GunGuy. I've actually been interested also in becoming NRA-certified as an instructor and live in San Clemente, CA. Beautiful place, great weather, same absurd laws from Sacramento.
+CyclicalCynical Hi CyclicalCynical. Thanks for watching my videos and for the kind words. If you'd like to get certified as an NRA instructor, you might contact T.J. Johnston at www.allsafedefense.com/. He's a good guy and offers the NRA civilian instructor courses. I'm an NRA law enforcement instructor, but that certification is only open to current and former law enforcement folks. If you have a law enforcement background, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.
Hoo yea Kalifornia no pistol grip = less dead people. This bit off knowledge comes from real wise Kalifornia legislators don't you know. Brought to you from The P R of K.
+Rick Smartt Thanks Rick. I appreciate the suggestion. The target was about 400 yards away. Perhaps you would have done better at that distance. I'm sure you are a much better shot with irons than I. Next time I'll bring a range finder so we'll know the exact distance to the target without having to figure it out afterwards.
When I had an SKS, I would often shoot way too high using open sights, much as you appear to be doing here. I then had some old dude explain to me about bullet-rise and zero and I started to do better. Unfortunately I sold my SKS before I got real good with it, so picking up a Saiga will really be like going back in time for me. I haven't fired any commie rifle now in almost 15 years!
+FJ Dubya They are really great rifles. I absolutely love mine. Being new to the UA-cam channel stuff I got a case of the stupids and didn't bring a range finder for this video. As it turns out, the target was a good 400 yards away. I don't consider myself the best rifle shot in the first place. The distance didn't help me any. :)
Bet the average Joe wouldn't do much better with an AR at 400yds. I intend to spend a lot of time with my saiga. It's the only way to get used to being accurate one rifle. Too many people have too many guns...or I should say they use too many guns, or maybe too many calibers. My only other rifle is an Enfield in .308 and I'm not really that ashamed to say I have little experience with any other long guns than shotguns. I may pick up a 22-250 someday, possibly even a single-shot, as I have some 22-250 ammo but no rifle for it. I made the mistake of having too many handgun calibers and safe-queens lying around. I'm not going to make that mistake getting back into rifle shooting. You know what they say: Beware the one-gun man... Anyway, cool video...especially because it's not so tacticool, which I hate! Cheers.
You hit the nail on the head!! I have both of these, and I can Ding 8" steel plates easily @ 100 yards offhand, iron sights! Barnaul ammo is the best out of Russia for these 2 guns.
keep the liberl asswagers out of texas gun laws. we dont need snymore gun laws support the secknd amendment, it supports the first and all others. death to the tyrants of this world....

I was drunk that day.
I think you may want to rezero your WASR. Mine does well to 250 yards.
+1...I can ring steel at 300 yards with mine. 9 times out of 10 it's the shooter, not the rifle.
Greatly enjoyed this vid! So many of the 'operator' play army types take the fun out of watching vids on these types of firearms. You just earned my sub! Thank you

I have both and actually shoot the Saiga better, but both are very accurate and dependable. Not big on the California laws, but if I lived there, I wouldn't move either. Good Video. Thanks.
Yep. They were zeroed. I was shooting off-hand at 300 yards for fun.
Enjoyed the video, Keep On Kepping On :)
I'm curious to see how that magazine release works on the WASR.
I wold never go to the range and not know what distance I was shooting at. geez
Good comparison and vid...Those bullet buttons are a pain to deal with but a necessary evil to be Ca compliant...
Im pretty sure all you woul have to do to the converted saiga would put a fin grip on it.
U Are Best Teacher
hi, Gunguy. I'm not very good with conversational English, can you say in the video... What distance are you shooting from carbines? I have a saiga, which was intended for the US market
In this video, I was shooting at about 300 yards.
normal shots for this distance, given that shooting is standing. Do you like your saiga and how you clean it? What kind of cleaning products and how much is spent on cleaning. It would be interesting to see a review about a minimum set for cleaning of such weapons, not so demanding to care
Hogue grips are the best in the business.
couldn't you mount some tool to the firearm to access the bullet guide faster or is that illegal too.
+Kenneth Taylor I believe it cannot be attached to the rifle.
like your channel, you have a great personality and love guns bullet button or not ! thank you sir
+andrew phillips My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
I bought a modified g2 trigger group from Dinzag for my saiga, and it made a HUGE difference. check it out
+Tim Liu Hi Tim: Thanks for this. Did you move the trigger group forward to add a pistol grip or did you maintain the original rifle stock without pistol grip?
Still in sporter config without a pistol grip. The g2 from Dinzag basically had the trigger portion milled off and refinished, and the contact surfaces polished.
+Tim Liu Could you possibly post a link to that? I'm not seeing it on their site.
Thanks!
Love the channel and am a s.d. County residence. I go to p2k often but would like to find a good desert spot. Where do you go? Rather where are you ate? Thx
Hello gun guy I am from California and I am having a terrible time finding a rifle I don't know whether to get a mini 30 or a Sega please maybe give a suggestion of a good rifle to have California compliant you know what I'm talking about
Saiga because mini 30 is only gonna accept ruger magazines. Saiga can use Ak type mags and you have more options with the Saiga
Alejandro Miramontes buy an sks bro. Trust me I know
Saiga is the one you want
hey gunguy, it's 2016, is the Saiga still CA compliant? damn California laws! Thx!
+Tomaso Young Hi Tomaso: Its still compliant.
thank u sir!
My pleasure. Have a great weekend and thanks for watching.
+Tomaso Young AB 1663 is trying to change that though.
yeah i just briefly read that hogwash of a bill! ridiculous!!!
i just bought a new production 2015 edition wasr with the blonde wood and all that jaz it looks alot better than the drift wood edition you got LOL (no offence) but mine came with those little mags too... i wanted 10/30 rivited mags so it looks more authentic :(
+DEEE STROYED Good for you! Their' great rifles, even when their ugly like mine. :). I'm sure it will shoot very well.
having to walk all the way down to pick up targets is part of why i prefer to wear exercise and comfortable clothes when out there. I wear cowboy boots however. Fitness shoes do terrible in sand in my experience.
how can you tell if your Saiga carbine is legal in California?
No pistol grip make it legal to have a detachable mags.
GUNGUY, DO YOU HAVE AN EMAIL POSTED SO THAT i CAN ASK SAIGA SPECIFIC QUESTIONS THAT THE GUN STORES ARE CLUELESS ABOUT?
THANK YOU
+Anna Falatic Hi Anna. Thanks for the note. Here is a link to the contact page on my blog. gunguy.tv/contact/ Hopefully that will help.
What kind of sling are you using? I just bought my Saiga.
You think California is bad, try those poor guys in New Germany, ooopps I mean New Jersey. My last pistol permit took 7 months!!
I'm not getting it. Those are both 'decent' rifles. I'm not being rude or 'cute', but can you see the targets? With genuinely 'bad' surplus ammo you should hit 80%
Nice vid
Plus there wood stocks are beautiful too. happy holidays from the non-free state of n.j.
out there in Ocotillo huh
Why didn't you at least pace out the distance?! Hmm...
did you say if I had to defend myself I would be dead with only ten rounds that is what they want
bullet button and single stacks? 😆 wow that sucks! only 30 round pmags and 73 round drums for me!
Are you in the Mojave Desert? Death Valley?
Saiga is way better then ak47
Saiga is a ak-47 lol
VOTE REPUBLICAN NOVEMBER 6
Ocotillo Wells?
that's off Split Mountain Rd I think.
Hoo yea Kalifornia no pistol grip = less dead people. This bit off knowledge comes from real wise Kalifornia legislators don't you know. Brought to you from The P R of K.
Wasr's are better in price too
Thumbs up...cool video...
Saiga not Sega, its not a gaming console...
Try sighting in your guns before making vids ... my Saiga shoots perfectly
And it should if it has the chrome-lined Barrel
Cheers.
NOT the rifles.
Moved here to CA from OH and yep the laws are idiotic at best. Can we still get AK's and AR's out here? I heard the was gonna be completely banned.
That man is look like sadam hosein ...
Imagine if the sights were on...
You hit the nail on the head!! I have both of these, and I can Ding 8" steel plates easily @ 100 yards offhand, iron sights! Barnaul ammo is the best out of Russia for these 2 guns.
I stopped watching when you mentioned California.
წესივრად აჩვენეთ სამიზნე უაზროდ რომ აბრაგუნებთ
I'll take the Roma AK.
10 round mags I guess they were being generous what a joke long live the republic
I’m in the communist state of New York, gun laws are just as horrible
I would say get more practice in but cali's ammo tax makes it too expensive..
TRUMP CARD BABY 2016 !!!!
Get the NRA out of TEXAS GUN LAWS !!!!
keep the liberl asswagers out of texas gun laws. we dont need snymore gun laws support the secknd amendment, it supports the first and all others. death to the tyrants of this world....
There not what they are ur just to scared to fight
Disgusting laws. Sorry pal, but sad shooting for you :(
Good video and explanations though :)
I think the Taliban has better aim :) just kidding.
To much talk blah blah blah.
