So true. I wanted to make changes to my final research report but I got a great grade on my draft so I just made the requested changes and not the changes I would have wanted. Good enough.
I love that it seems no student ever rereads their works after submitting. I have written like 9 term papers, send them my profs, put them in the file with all my other papers and never opened it again. It is the pandoras box of my suffering and bad writing.

Reading old papers is an adventure. I reread my undergraduate thesis yesterday and if you’d blacked out the author’s name I wouldn’t have known that I wrote it.

This is exactly the way I work too: plan, plan, overplan, re-plan, then procrastinate (but sort of still working it out and figuring things out in my mind), procrastinate, panic, start because there's no more time, doing a good chunk and feeling somewhat confident, hating it, starting again and realizing this is going to be harder than anticipated, work, work, be weirdly focused and extremely dedicated, more work...almost procrastinate again to finish it up...AND DONE!

I have a 100 pages to write by the 30th of June and I have planned everything, read scientific articles, organized all the sources , figure things out in my mind every hour of the day but boy what a hassle it is to get myself to write, so far I wrote an intro of 2 pages and a half😂😭

Very true Maradiel you perfectly re-produced what difficulties I went through. Not to mention the tremendous difficulty of actaully typing out your thesis/essay in a clear strucutred way. In your head it might look detailed and structured but when you see it pen on paper (or word document) it ends up being half the length you anticipated and looks like it was written by a 10 year old. And then you hate yourself because you cannot write well compared to others, feel sad, go on a self hate and pity party, think you will end up homeless, procrastinate, panic some more, then force yourself to start again.
This is literally me rn, I have multiple detailed plans, that I've been constantly changing in the past weeks, then I procrastinate thinking I deserve a break (lol), but when I finally write my thoughts down and re-read, oh boy. It's a scraping party, my thesis I mean. Going mental🤡

I finished my dissertation yesterday, after writing it in less than 10 days, I can relate so much to this mindset hahaha
The weirdest part was towards the end; the thesis was due at 12pm, and I had progressed so well that I was so chilled out the night before and got over-confident. Then, half-way through the night when I realised that putting the words into the TEMPLATE takes freakin ages - I lost all sense of chill. Fast forward to 11.50am the next day after an all-nighter and I still needed to fix one paragraph, but just submitted it regardless. BUT HOLD ON because I then realised that, because I'm in my home country (due to COVID), I had an EXTRA HOUR from the time difference. not gonna lie, that time difference literally saved my ass :D sorry this was a long story but basically thank the lord for time difference

When I was doing my dissertation I read through it multiple times. I eventually resorted to putting it through google translate (English), so I could hear it read to me and that helped me SO MUCH

I started writing my dissertation conclusion with 20 minutes left to go. I was already on an all-nighter having worked on my two other chapters lol. The clock was ticking, my conclusion was going nowhere, I was under the required word limit but I had to take action. With five minutes left to go, I said alright, half of the page of a conclusion is enough, I need to focus on cleaning things up. Check for dead white spaces, quickly zoom out to see how it looks, what needs tweaking that kind of stuff, all the while feverishly looking at the bottom right cornered time. Come one, come on, come on, send it as it is already! My mind and increasingly fast-beating heart were suggesting. But no, I still have time to double-check. I entered the final minute, I knew it would come to this. I could only submit by 11:59:59...At 11:59:00 I started mentally counting but with a beat faster so I am still ahead of the clock. Okay, let's upload this bad boy (I had the upload page ready I only needed to select the file and submit it). I select the pdf, hit submit - SESSION TIMED OUT, PLEASE LOGIN AGAIN. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU**K, I WAS STILL COUNTING! 11:59:30 in my head, the heart was beating like crazy, my hands instantly lost 80% of their speediness, everything was moving in slow motion, I was still counting. I logged back in, no mistake could be made. I click on browse, it opens my desktop, I have no clue where the latest saved document went, there is no time for browsing. CTRL+TAB instantly and I open the window containing my document. I click and hold it, CTRL+TAB back to the upload page, I release it on the upload area, check the 'I agree' box and hit SUBMIT. The circular 'please wait' thingy is moving. BOOM...... Thank you for your submission, TIme - 11:59:59. I was the happiest man alive lol.

alb0zfinest not gonna lie I have done a 14 page paper in a day. I had all the research prepared, but I got up at 7 AM and worked on it for 16 hours straight. In the end it was 18 pages with the 30 sources I had for it. To be fair to myself my professor had me throw out my old paper and do that one on a new topic during the last 2 weeks of the semester.

i did exactly the same thing as you with my dissertation lmao. i planned it all out, wrote 3k words of the initial literature review, and then when i spoke to my tutor in january (it was due in april) he basically said i needed to redo the question. so i try to figure out what i'm doing next. what work can i actually keep from what i've done so far? i do my focus group research in february. it all feels like it's going according to plan. i have time, don't i? cut to two weeks before the due date, i'm down to 1k/10k words, and i still have another 3k assignment due in before the dissertation (both of which i have not begun). it got to the final week. 7 days left. i slept for 6 hours during that entire time. i am not lying. i would have a 30-45 minute nap at 6am or there abouts. it was, quite frankly, *awful* . but i tell you what. after the final all nighter in the library? on the due date? i submitted it online at 08:45am, and then i took that motherfucker to Staples to get it printed at 09:30am. and whilst it was printing, i went to mcdonalds across the road. and that sausage and egg mcmuffin was the best mcmuffin i have ever had in my entire life. it tasted of freedom. it tasted of the sweet sweet sleep that i knew i would have later that day. it tasted of 10k words of utter bullshit but i somehow got 67% anyway and a First in my overall degree. worth it? i'll let you decide.

@@Hopuxx YOU'VE GOT THIS! honestly tho you never think you can do it but somehow LIFE FINDS A WAY!! i was convinced i wasn't gonna get it done, and as someone who functions very poorly on no sleep, i still managed it somehow. and that is also as someone who writes academic papers very slowly. a lot of my friends could do a single 3k assignment in a day or less - that shit would take me a week in most cases. obvs the dissertation was a special case lol as i hardly stopped working that entire time, but i did it and it was such a big sigh of relief after. just think, in 17 days you don't have to even think about it any more, it'll be done and dusted. you've got this, you can do ittttt!
6h in 7 days. I seriously can’t imagine that. I would be soooo unproductive at some point and fall asleep at my desk lol. I do pull all nighters right before exams. But I don’t think I could do that for 7 days in a row.

I was in the exact position as you, done all the research, was very organized, had all the thoughts in my head and just needed to put everything on paper. It was chaotic and stressful but also kind do weirdly fun and satisfying?! I relate so much with this video!! :) Very fun!

okay jack here is the thing (fellow absolute idiot):my final year law dissertation (30 PAGES!?) is due on monday. We were given the option to not hand it in an re do it in the summer, so I had given up at this point (was at a similar stage as you in my work), because it counts toward my final grade (and I did not want to screw myself over). But u have given me the motivation to not toss all my work in the trash so I will give it a proper try.

The separate document is soooo relatable. I always have an empty document open next to my document to write pieces of text in there instead of my actual paper. It makes no sense but it feels way better.
I feel this video so much! I was doing research for my bachelor thesis for soo long that at some point I was soo afraid to actually write words. It became so stressful that I had to get professional help, because I became sooo anxious of this task. At the end I finished the whole thesis in 2 Weeks and also received a great grade! Jack. I don‘t know you, and I probably won‘t ever get the chance to thank you. But I just want to say: you have single-handedly saved my life. I had 9 months to write my dissertation. I started off great with writing interviews, conducting them, transcribing them, going through the data and analysing it, plotting graphs etc. But I just could not bring myself to start writing. So I put it off. For 8 months and 2.5 weeks. And then it hit me: I have 1.5 weeks left, 0 literature read, and 0 words written. And I cried. I thought about hiring a ghostwriter (I could never), re-taking my thesis year, or just straight up sinking into the earth and dying. But then I openend UA-cam instead and typed „writing your thesis in one week“, and I found the absolute masterpiece that is this video. I saved it to my phone and every time I wanted to cry or give up I watched it and it gave me hope that I could finish this. And I did. I just got my grade and I can‘t believe it, I actually got a good grade, placing in the top 20% of students. I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. No other person in my life was able to help me as much as you did with this video. Truly a gem. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Switzerland.
And if you‘re reading this and have a thesis to finish: you can do it. But it‘s really, really hard. And you must absolutely push through and remember that a mediocre thesis is better than an unfinished one. Don‘t waste time trying to get it perfect! You‘ve got this!!! In 1.5 weeks I read 25 papers and wrote my whole thesis, start to finish, 15‘000 words. I did not sleep the last 40hours before the submission because I had to format everything, go through the sources, write the abstract in both English and German, get everything printed etc. But I submitted it, 2hours before deadline, and I have now successfully graduated!!
This is absolutely amazing, I’m proud of you stranger! :)
Because I would have wanted this advice as an undergrad: please use a reference software like Zotero! You will be able to cite as you go, they do the bibliography for you, and you don't have to spend hours going back putting them in! If you write a lot of papers it's so worth it!

Zotero + Latex has given back hundreds of hours of my life I’d have wasted doing references by hand
what uni also taught me during the years when you have a dissertation of 12000 words : these 12000 words don't need to be good, they just need to be done
I literally just did this to myself. Wrote my 85 page thesis in 8 hellish days (25,000-ish words). There was three day window in there where I never saw the Sun and genuinely could not remember what day it was after the third day of writing. What a ride!

ooof this brought back MEMORIES. being awake for 72 hours straight to finish three different final essays that i had left ALL until the last moment was a damn trip to say the least, and im sure took at least a week off of my life, but we're here, we're queer, and we're starting our career.
I'm less than 10 pages away from finishing my final thesis and I can tell y'all this: planning is a damn trap when you don't have enough time to begin with. Planning has this kind of addictive side to it, if you spend an entire day just planning what to do instead of actually doing shit at the end you feel kind of satisfied and accomplished, only to realize (probably at night, more frequently the day after) that you wasted an entire day worth of work doing nothing, because what's even the point of planning things in such detail when you only have a week to do everything. A general outline is necessary of course, but getting lost in useless details is also pretty easy (especially if you're a lazy perfectionist lol). What am I doing here instead of finishing my thesis, you might ask. Fair point. I'll go back to it 👌

I realised literally 30 minutes ago that my dissertation proposal is due on Tuesday (six days!) and I hadn't made a plan or started writing yet so this... very motivational/applicable.

the fact I am waiting for this video even though I am in lower sixth and it has no relevance to me lol
After finishing my dissertation research, I realised my study was really weak, so I changed the title and had to complete all new research and write my dissertation in 3 weeks. Many late nights and early starts later, I did it. It was the most stressful period of my life, I came out with 75% and received a first class degree :)
hi jack, i just wanna tell you that i've watched this video of yours a few months before my dissertation deadline, just so to scare and warn myself to not go through the same process as you did.
a few months later, a week before my dissertation deadline, i changed up my entire thesis statement and wrote it entirely from scratch.
clearly i was a clown (still am) and it was hell.
but anyways, thanks for the video, i graduated, somehow.

This is so relatable. I’ll plan my essays thoroughly and then wait until right before the deadline to actually write it out. Also, this has so many helpful tips, like printing out your essay to edit by hand.

one thing i learned from this video is even if i dont feel like writing yet, it’s important to plan out everything as soon as possible so your future self can be less stressed

I know this feeling very well - somehow there is nothing worse. The self doubt, the hope, the despair, the seemingly insurmountable task, the fear, the joy, the hallucinations from lack of sleep... I’ve been writing these things for decades and I still leave them to the last minute 😂
I watched this video too many times. There is something so relatable, stress-inducing and yet satisfying about seeing you smash it at the last minute.
Currently in my final year and this video lives rent-free in my head. If jack can write he's dissertation in a week, I'm going to get through mine in two months
I needed this video. I was panicking about the 3 coursework pieces i have due in 4-5 weeks which add up to about 9000 words, so knowing I have 3000 words less to do and 4 weeks more gives me so much more hope.
Also im a super lazy proof-reader so i think the printing it out and making notes thing will help me alot.
