ugh... I loved Piranesi!! I had no idea what it was about, the hype, none of it. I would love to actually see that house... Awesome book. Hands down a fave.
Piranesi transformed me from a strictly high fantasy, dragons and gargoyles girly into someone who gives most books a chance. The twist in this book and the last few chapters filled me with such curiosity that I couldnt stop turning the pages
The thumbnail is so funny for me, “where is the plot twist, where is the interesting plot that is different than normal life” please read the title one more time I feel like we can work this out together 😂
When I first read Piranesi, I gave up after about 40 pages, not able to get into it and to stick with the story. After abandoning it for 2 years, I picked it up again, restarted, and didn't put it back down until i finished it. I'm glad I didn't review it the first time around and gave it a second chance - I absolutely adored it on the second read. Just had to be in the right mood for it!
In addition to being extremely challenging to read, 1984 deals with a very difficult subject. Although I purchased the book, I ultimately listened to it. Despite the book's subject, the girl who read it had such a soft, angelic voice that it turned out to be a passable read. The subject matter is extremely difficult, particularly for me as I reside in Romania, a country where communism was rife and these events were real and widespread. Though I was fortunate enough to be born when it was coming to an end, reading this book felt a lot like reading a history book because I knew the stories from my parents and grandparents. Finally, I would say that this is a book that I highly recommend listening to on audio and having a soft-spoken reader. The book is difficult enough. The reader does not have to speak in a dramatic manner because doing so could make you feel down afterwards.
This was fun to watch because for me all these books either fall into the "oh FINALLY I've been waiting for someone to rip this book apart the reviews are ON POINT" or into the "this is a literary masterpiece and no one can touch a hair on its head" category for me
I can’t but help when I see bad reviews on my favourite books, questioning everything about my favourite book and wondering if the person who gave bad review was right 😭🤣
I found a Sally Rooney hardcover for like $4, so I bought it and I'm excited to find out if I like her writing or not lol. It seems like she either hits or misses with tastes.
Sally Rooney is definitely a love it or hate it author. I believe in reading a few books to give the author a chance and I disliked all of them, and Normal People was my least favourite of them all. A good friend of mine, whose opinion on books I absolutely respect, adores her writing. I’m glad you found a cheap copy of the book and it would be interesting to see which side of the coin you fall to with her writing. Happy reading!
I hated it. The writing style is not very nice and the plot (Normal People) was just two unlikable White people complaining about secretly pining for each other, while there seemed to be more interesting plot points hinted at.
5:13 "Maybe we do miss, when all men did was... go to war and die" BYEEEEE IM DEAD. The pause, I thought u were gonna say something normal then u pulled the war and die part LMAO
Hello Jack! I love your videos and your personality ❤ please remember that goodreads is also used by spanish speakers and a lot of us read books originally written in english, it may be a non ironic "No me gustó" 😅. Another thing if you liked Emma I think you may enjoy Iphigenia from the venezuelan writer Teresa de la Parra, the full title of the book is: Iphigenia (the diary of a young lady that wrote because she was bored) it's not for everyone and I don't know how it translates to english but I love it and the protagonist gives me Emma vibes, the themes are different though.
I love “Emma” and I’m dying to finally watch the movie but I haven’t been able to yet! And I finished the book 3 years ago!!! Also, “Emma” is actually quite an eventful book right off the bat, like, I recently read “Persuasion” and that took about 80 pages for something interesting to happen 💀
I kowkey get the normal people reviews tho 😭. I havent read that book, but i tried Beautiful World, Where Are You? and everything just felt so...forced. Maybe because it was my first real literary novel, but people having exstisential crisises to eachother over email felt so ridiculous, and then that one phone call...safe to say i dnfed after about 80 pages.
I was having a difficult day, had a splitting headache and this video brought me back to life. I am also quite fond of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Emma is my ultimate Jane Austen favorite so that was a treat. One star reviews deserve to be carefully written, specially if you're going against a classic. Such a fun concept and I loved it!
What did I learn watching this video? That me and Jack have opposite taste in books. Anyway, in defense of my 1 star reviews: • Piranesi: it gave me anxiety, which I do NOT need right now in my life :') • no matter what I do, but I physically cannot read The Picture of Dorian Grey. I tried 100 times, I cannot. Probably dye to the fact that teachers in middle school forced it to me for YEARS, when I only wanted to read silly preteen books. Now I'm a huge classic book nerd, but The Pucture Of Dorian Grey is just: no. • I have a problem with Jane Austen books in general, I simply don't like her writing, but I love her stories (P&P is one of my fav movies) • I didn't read 1989 yet but I'm sincerely afraid now. Despite this, I will continue to binge Jack's videos anyway :')
people critisising 1984 ( which is my fav ) just made me so mad. its such a window into the dystopia that our world is turning into and its beyond me how people disregard it and call it boring. in my opinion, it just proved the point of the book.
I know people have individual tastes but I will agree with all the critique about Normal People because of the rage I heard about it and when I read it with that high expectations, it was just 200 pages of waiting for something to happen. As one of the readers summed it, "I've read shampoo bottles with more plot twists."
I honestly think that people finding classics boring is a symptom of our collective short attention span (social media, phones in general…). We are soo used to fast developing story lines and 1000 ”plot twists“ that it’s harder to just enjoy a beautifully written book for what it is. And I really struggle with this too sometimes! It’s probably just a matter of practice and taking your time ☺️
11:20 Toni Morrisons writing is not flowery at all! She is great at writing in a straight forward, mellow yet raw tone. Sula is literally just 180 pages, so much is implied in that story that is not written down. She knows how to bring the town The Bottom and the friendship between Sula and Nel alive in very short, powerful fragments
Such a waste of time (Normal People) Meh(disappointing) not worth the hype at all Read it and just can't relate to the protagonist, both The male and female lead are completely lost of track and doesn't even know what to do and what is better. They love each other from the start but still making love with other people and informing each other ,I mean what kind of love is that? Well then if these is the love story then sorry I have other definition of love stories . Don't know why they call it the future classic? And there is no continuity between it's chapter, it's been interrelated and mixed a lot And it doesn't feel like a complete. Chapter should have been written in a correlation and with the storyline, the only good thing about the book is the way of writing, it's good like really good a simple and beautiful writing to fall in love with . If the story, chapter, character, and their bond would have been better these book would have been great. 🌟(1/5)
The Normal People sequel they're probably talking about is "At the Clinic"! It was Sally Rooney's short story that was published in the White Review in 2016 and then she wrote Normal People after!
I saw piranesi, and I couldn't help myself. I read that book because of your recommendation and I was SO disappointed in it. I feel like it has soo much potential and then just wastes all of it. If you told me about a book that mentions travel to a different dimension, rituals, mad scientists, a house in the middle of the sea (is it sentient? Is it a God? Who build it?) filled with statues that are reflections of the real world (Plato's cave anyone? How did they appear? Did someone made them?), reading old journals, memory loss/alteration, exploring a mysterious place and chronicling, etc. I would have thought it was a 500-700+ book with incredible world building that would just CONSUME me. Instead I got what I consider to be a draft of that book, some bare-bones pitifully cut-down version of it. NONE of the storylines are developed nearly as much as I would have liked them to be. Also, I don't know if it's just my impression but reading the epilogue, I felt like the author just got bored of writing and wanted to be done with it. The whole ending is just like: so, after that happened I did this and now am doing this, she did this, he did this, this happened, that happened, THE END. No development, no real closure, just listing off characters and what happened to them. Well, I've been wanting to complain a little bit about this book but never got around to writing a review so sorry if this is a little chaotic or rude.
@LudmorHun well, to me it didn't feel groundbreaking - it just felt unfinished and unpolished. If an average book actually develops all the storylines it starts then I surely prefer it over something different. Piranesi had an interesting concept and I loved the descriptions of the house and the scenes of exploring it but then it just wasted all that potential

Ngl I zoned out, not because the videos bad but because there’s a lot on my mind. So soothing. this music and your voice is a great backrough filler. I say this with love I promise!!
Goodreads reviewers are just so funny 😭
Books:
Normal People by Sally Rooney: 1:25
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde: 3:17
Piranesi by Susanna Clark: 5:45
Emma by Jane Austen: 7:58
Sula by Toni Morrison: 11:03
Hamnet by Maggie O Farrell: 12:28
1984 by George Orwell: 14:09
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara: 14:44
ugh... I loved Piranesi!!
I had no idea what it was about, the hype, none of it.
I would love to actually see that house... Awesome book. Hands down a fave.
3:41 that story actually is so sweet… it’s one of my mother’s favorites as well
Piranesi transformed me from a strictly high fantasy, dragons and gargoyles girly into someone who gives most books a chance. The twist in this book and the last few chapters filled me with such curiosity that I couldnt stop turning the pages
They shouldn't have waited to the last pages. I could not get there. 😅
@@YV09876 it's really worth it if you can push through!
Omg the shade thrown in this video (both in the reviews and from you) is exactly what I needed today!
When I say I was having fun till it was time for my favourite book 💀🥲
The thumbnail is so funny for me, “where is the plot twist, where is the interesting plot that is different than normal life” please read the title one more time I feel like we can work this out together 😂
There's a one star review for 'They both die at the end' that says - Hope they stay dead 💀
About to write a 1 star book so jack will review it✨✨
so happy to see you put piranesi as books you love more than anything because i’m currently reading it after your review on it!! 💌
I would start another world war with people who write negative reviews of my fav books, you are stronger than me
In addition to being extremely challenging to read, 1984 deals with a very difficult subject.
The reader does not have to speak in a dramatic manner because doing so could make you feel down afterwards.
oh you're so braveeee I could never 🥲
“Maybe we do miss when all men did was go to war and die” - you really got me with that one 😂
It feels illegal to be this early
Mhmm, totally agree
That 1 star review of Hamnet which made me realize that maggie used adjectives in threes will always be iconic.
I love those 1 star reviews of 1984 . Perfection 🤌
Jack you should do this more often this was so fun
today i finished turtles all the way down, liked it, and went to update my goodreads just to find that you sir rated it 2 stars
This was fun to watch because for me all these books either fall into the "oh FINALLY I've been waiting for someone to rip this book apart the reviews are ON POINT" or into the "this is a literary masterpiece and no one can touch a hair on its head" category for me
I wholeheartedly agree with the "normal people" ones.
‘Weirdo’ I take this as a compliment - who wants to be ordinary 😂😂
Same!
I loved this! So funny. I think my favorite one was 1984 “what a wild thing to say about a book on censorship” 😂😂😂😂😂
I want you to find more review's by these same people and see what their 5 star reads are.
That might be a bit invasive, but fun!
They probably books that aren't pretentious and that have plot.
5:13 "Maybe we do miss, when all men did was... go to war and die"
BYEEEEE IM DEAD. The pause, I thought u were gonna say something normal then u pulled the war and die part LMAO
8:49 I LAUGHED OUT LOUD
I saw someone say everyone hates the miscommunication trope because it's too close to real life and we hate it in real life 😂
Anyway,
in defense of my 1 star reviews:
• Piranesi: it gave me anxiety, which I do NOT need right now in my life :')
• no matter what I do, but I physically cannot read The Picture of Dorian Grey. I tried 100 times, I cannot. Probably dye to the fact that teachers in middle school forced it to me for YEARS, when I only wanted to read silly preteen books. Now I'm a huge classic book nerd, but The Pucture Of Dorian Grey is just: no.
• I have a problem with Jane Austen books in general, I simply don't like her writing, but I love her stories (P&P is one of my fav movies)
• I didn't read 1989 yet but I'm sincerely afraid now.
Despite this, I will continue to binge Jack's videos anyway :')
We do not have the same taste in books whatsoever, but it’s so entertaining to watch this stuff😂
I've read shampoo bottles with more plot twists.
💀
I was waiting for A Little Life, and I'm so glad you did it, cause I'm right there with you Jack, it's my favourite book
people critisising 1984 ( which is my fav ) just made me so mad. its such a window into the dystopia that our world is turning into and its beyond me how people disregard it and call it boring. in my opinion, it just proved the point of the book.
as an architect "halls, vestibules, statues, albatross" sounds like the perfect afternoon idk
Such a waste of time (Normal People)
Meh(disappointing) not worth the hype at all
Read it and just can't relate to the protagonist, both The male and female lead are completely lost of track and doesn't even know what to do and what is better.
They love each other from the start but still making love with other people and informing each other ,I mean what kind of love is that?
Well then if these is the love story then sorry I have other definition of love stories .
Don't know why they call it the future classic?
And there is no continuity between it's chapter, it's been interrelated and mixed a lot
And it doesn't feel like a complete.
Chapter should have been written in a correlation and with the storyline, the only good thing about the book is the way of writing, it's good like really good a simple and beautiful writing to fall in love with .
If the story, chapter, character, and their bond would have been better these book would have been great.
🌟(1/5)
literally could listen to jack talk about anything
'maybe we miss when all men went to war and died' HAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHFJGDSJSHASGUSHSNSHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
The Normal People sequel they're probably talking about is "At the Clinic"! It was Sally Rooney's short story that was published in the White Review in 2016 and then she wrote Normal People after!
im sorry but normal people sent me into a reading slump, i hated it sm.
Thank u so much Jack for accepting my suggestion to do this video of reacting to 1 star reviews of ur fav books!😇
It is good BECAUSE it is not your average YA isekai. You can find enough of those.
