Definitely a lot of beauty there with the challenges with the snow. Love all the streams! Hope Anthony’s problems get better.

Interesting takes from different east coast peeps thinking they would prefer a later season Sierra hike.
Experienced aficionados specifically target May/June *because of the snow* and weather conditions.
(For example, you're most likely not even fully appreciating the super blue sky, dark granite and white, assuming that's just how it is.
Um no, that's what it looks like in May/June, then late Sept/early Oct.)
I don't even bother with late July through August. First, there's the monsoon rainstorms (torrential downpour for days with 0 views), then the fires and smoke, and lastly, there's a reason it's called the 'JMT highway'.
Bullfrog and Tuolumne south of bridge are still closed to camping, no? How about boyscout jamboree crowds at TI lake?
If you guys are around Mammoth, I'd highly recommend considering that you truly scored the best dates to fully appreciate the rest of your hike

Krysta Norwich on UA-cam filmed her SoBo last year starting in late July. I’ve decided from all the videos I’ve watched - I’d want your dates for NoBo and her dates for SoBo. Definitely not in reverse. And wouldn’t want to have any later nobo or any earlier SoBo.
I think I’ve learned there is no perfect timing overall. Fire season happens along the entire route in the summer, usually way worse in California in mid summer. Oregon fires are pretty unpredictable and it seems no matter what direction you’ll be in their prime season. I live in WA and much of the PCT in the mountains is completely covered with snow until late July. You’ll be hitting the beautiful autumn weather in the PNW which is unparalleled (said with a bias, of course).
So pros and cons to both. Like you said, impossible to know snow wise what to expect in the sierras. Impossible to guess Oregon summer fires. WA is very wet early summer and dry late summer into October. Too hard to know for certain !

I noticed that you're showing less of the amazing and incredible views (that ohh ahh moments you've shown before). Instead it's become the plodding urgency of the trail. But, I'm still enjoying as such.

You will be happy you started the Sierra early once summer and fire season is in full swing. You want to get north as quickly as possible because it's not a matter of if, but when fire closures happen

Congratulations on how far you've come, the conditions you've traversed and the progress you've made!!! Just so proud of you! My only word of warning is that the mosquitoes can be fierce in the Oregon forests. I've seen some hikers wear mosquitoes or bug suits and I think it helps but you might want to check around. Oregon is worth it though. BTW I'm still treasuring your vlogs!! Keep up the good work, Frozen. 🙏❤😀

Do the best you can with the 10% you can control. The ups and downs are natural with the 90% we have no control over except of course how we respond to that 90%. Doing great and before you know it you’ll be done with those risky passes! 👍🙏

This was my dream hike of hikes in 2020. A big disaster happened which left me unable to walk for 4 months. By then I’d gone off the boil! Now I’ll watch you guys going greener with every step you take.

  • @slashieaward
    @slashieaward Місяць тому +1

Grass is greener. SoBos start in snow in the northern Cascades in much more remote and difficult terrain, and then it's a race to get through the Sierra before it gets snowed in. And bear in mind that California wildfire season is typically July - October.

I've wondered about PCT southbound; start once snow clears from Cascades in early July, get through Sierras before snow flies in October(?) and then desert section in early winter. However, realize 80% do it NOBO so there must be a reason beyond tradition. But easier logistic wise due to spring work projects and fact I live in Seattle. (Feel free to reply to this channel when you approach I-90 if you need to come into Seattle for a zero.)

i know you wanted to make it farther but i am so happy you get to go over Kearsarge Twice! such a beautiful area, glad you spent a little longer in it...Glen Pass!! so awesome.. man it makes me happy to see you out here. Southbound is tricky But if timed right it does work out. Neemor has a great set of videos, i got to meet him at sonora pass on his way south one year. We had so many drought years snow was a non issue but yeah if snow is present i think you are right south is simpler. 800 awesome miles, thanks so much for taking us with you /"wanna go to Canada?" hahaha /awesome.
