4 Kegel Exercises for Men that are FALSE and even DANGEROUS - Don't Be Fooled!

  • Some Kegel exercises for men to strengthen and overcome pelvic floor problems such as ED, bladder leakage or after prostate surgery are ineffective pelvic floor muscle exercises. Physiotherapist Michelle Kenway www.pelvicexercises.com.au exposes 4 so-called Kegel exercises for men that waste your time and potentially dangerous with pelvic floor dysfunction.
    Despite the good intentions of many online resources, these particular exercises are misleading men with incorrect Kegel exercises and recovery information.

    4:39 Exercise 3 Adductor squeeze
    6:02 Exercise 4 Deep squat
    ‘Kegel Exercise’ 1 - Bridge
    One of the most commonly misrepresented Kegel exercises is the bridge exercise, which is a great exercise for strengthening the gluteus maximus (buttock muscles), but it does not target the pelvic floor muscles. In fact, correct technique Kegel exercises involve relaxing the buttock muscles rather than contracting them.
    ‘Kegel Exercise’ 2 - Plank
    Another exercise often promoted as a Kegel exercise for men is the plank, which is a great exercise for core strength, but it does not specifically target isolated strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles. The Plank primarily targets the abdominal trunk muscles including the ‘6 pack’ or rectus abdominus muscles. Physiotherapists discourage strong activation of these outer abdominal muscles which increase intra abdominal pressure creating a force working downwards upon the pelvic floor. This force potentially worsens pelvic floor problems in men with preexisting pelvic floor dysfunction.
    ‘Kegel Exercise’ 3 - Hip Adduction
    Hip adductor exercises involve using a resistance block or ball placed between the knees and squeezing the knees together using an isometric contraction. This exercise trains the thigh adductor muscles and can mislead men into thinking they are strengthening their pelvic floor muscles with Kegel exercises. Physiotherapists encourage relaxation of the thigh adductor muscles during correctly targetted Kegel exercises for men.
    ‘Kegel Exercise’ 4 - Deep Squat
    Sustained deep squats are ineffective for pelvic floor strengthening. These are not Kegel exercises and when performed by men with pelvic floor weakness or pelvic pain, deep squats can exacerbate pelvic floor dysfunction through prolonged stretching and weakenening of the male pelvic floor muscles. Some men experience pelvic floor injury (e.g. rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids) performing heavy loaded deep squats in the gym, especially while wearing a weight belt which increases intra abdominal pressure as squat compresses the abdominal and pelvic contents down upon the pelvic floor muscles.
    If you're serious about improving your pelvic floor health, it's important to know which exercises are truly effective. Michelle Kenway, a highly experienced Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, provides expert advice and guidance on effective Kegel exercises for men. Don't be fooled by misleading Kegel exercises - learn how to properly strengthen your pelvic floor muscles to improve your bladder control, erectile function, and overall pelvic health with correct Kegel exercises for men.

    Someone below commented that this video talks too much … @onailyn4436 thank you for your feedback. All feedback is helpful. Please tell me, as a qualified physiotherapist dedicated to helping men with pelvic floor problems, when I see this kind of misinformation about incorrect Kegel exercises misleading men and wasting their time for example after prostate surgery would you prefer that I say nothing? Not tell these men that these so called ‘Kegel exercises’ are NOT going to fix their ED or bladder leakage? Would you prefer that I sit back and say nothing, let men think that these exercises will fix their problems? Let me know, I’m interested to hear what you think I should do. I understand the concept of isolating the flexion of the pelvic floor muscles to better form a brain to pelvic floor muscle connection. But just relying on such an isolation exercise may not be the best way. It's like only doing biceps curls. Then when you go to do pullups you find out that you need a lot more muscles in the back and shoulders to perform that exercise. I would think that doing isolation kegels in the beginning to get better control over those muscles is fine but also doing exercises for all the muscles around the pelvic floor muscles should be of even greater benefit and result.

    Dear Michelle, thank you for your precious channel and information!
    I read that some exercises which are claimed to be Kegel’ones but are not, may eventually even be “dangerous” for the pelvic muscles.
    So it means that when one person goes to the gym to do fitness exercises to increase his muscular mass, I fear that many exercises (like squats or those for buttocks muscles etc) may influence the pelvic muscles. Is that right?
    So I would like to know how can one man go to the gym to increase his mass and also avoid crating problema to the pelvic muscles? Are there some exercises to be avoided?
    Thank you for your answers!

      @M Bus Hi this is a great question. This problem only applies to men with preexisting pelvic floor dysfunction such as pelvic floor muscle weakness. Men with strong well functioning pelvic floor muscles will be safe for the most part unless they are for example deep squatting very heavy weights (with tight weight belts) that overload their pelvic floor muscle capacity to resist the force created. In the case of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, the situation is different. Would you like me to make a video on this scenario?

    • @mbus2506
      @mbus2506 Рік тому +1

      @@michellephysio Dear Michelle, thank you for your explanation.
      1. When you say that this problem is relating to men with
      preexisting pelvic floor dysfunction such
      as pelvic floor muscle weakness.
      I suppose that men who do dot regularly di sports may have pelvic floor muscles weakness: is that right? I presume after making correct and not heavy load pelvic floor exercises in the right way this is important to make pelvic floor stronger.
      Is this right?
      What I mean is: is it good for men
      A well trained pelvic floor muscle good for their sexual health?
      Are those exercises (such as the bridge or squats) which often are said to be in many UA-cam videos Kegel exercises good or not?
      Yes, a video on this topic a my questions above would be great a suppose.
      Thank you so much !!! :)

But it did wonders for me. I’m 50 and a little overweight but I feel 16 again. Very full erections and very short refractory times. But thanks for information!

    @michellephysio For clarification: I've been doing glute bridges, planks, and wall squats (wall and chair squats for a bad knee, never deep squats) for separate reasons. Does doing those exercises undermine pelvic floor strengthening, or only when it it is done in lieu of pelvic floor strengthening exercises? The exercises in your videos helped me a few years ago, but I slacked off after the problems went away and I am seeing a slight return even as I do other exercises.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  Місяць тому

      @magnusskallagrimsson6707 Hi Magnuss great question, thank you! glute bridges are a great exercise for most men and women with pelvic floor weakness. They can be loaded with weights and will not place undue pressure on the pelvic floor. Wall/chair squats small depth shouldn't be a problem for most people with pelvic floor weakness. I like modified plank performed on the knees see technique for how to modify Plank here 1:25 ua-cam.com/video/khSLBOipfto/v-deo.htmlsi=rtcCT021tvPBPJqQ I hope this is helpful. Important to do daily Kegel exercises for strength & endurance gains and then maintain long-term approx, 3 days/week. I hope this is helpful, always keen to hear how you go Magnuss, Cheers MK 🦾🙏

    😀thank you Michelle to share with us, I wanna ask you, all the exercises that you have advised against for the pelvic floor such as squats or bridges but which are useful for other purposes can be continued even if you practice the kegel exercises you have suggested.
    For example, I do the bridge for the hamstrings and glutes and I feel very good about it, I would be sad not to do them because I do the other kegel exercises.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  4 місяці тому +1

      @luca6417 Hi there. Bridges are a wonderful exercise and they are also a pelvic floor friendly exercise that can be loaded. There is really no reason to worry about doing your bridges. Just take care with your squats and make them a mini squat rather than a wide, deep Leg Squat that's shown on this video. You could just make them a small squat with your knees closer together. Or you could also do a wall squat with weights as well. So squats modified squats and bridges are wonderful exercises to continue and I don't see an issue with them at all. I hope this information helps you wishing you all the best!🙏

    Another great video! Thank you. One question: if exercise 4 is bad, does that mean it's not good to use a squat toilet then?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  Рік тому +1

      @KurtOrionmysteryG Hey Kurt, this is a really good question. Squat toilets put the body in the optimal position for bowel emptying (I think one of the previous female English monarchs considered squatting with bowel movements common and had 'the throne' or seated toilet designed to avoid squatting on the ground). Squatting briefly to empty the bowel is quite different to repeatedly loading the pelvic floor with a heavy weighted bar, tight fitted weight belt and repeatedly squatting deeply and straining for strength gains. Squat is a great exercise, don't get me wrong. I do think it's one for caution with weak pelvic floor muscles and/or pelvic pain at least until rehab. I've seen many guys suffer pelvic floor and anorectal issues from doing very heavy deep squats. Hope this is helpful!

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  4 місяці тому +2

      @simonyoung7234 Hi there, electrical stimulation devices can be helpful for individuals with very weak pelvic floor muscles, particularly those people who are unable to voluntarily contract the pelvic floor muscles. The best form of pelvic floor muscle or Kegels exercise is usually voluntary exercise rather than electrically stimulated exercise. Having said this, some electrical stimulation devices can be very helpful for women and men with overactive bladder. It’s best to have the device prescribed by a pelvic full physiotherapist who can show you how to use the device in terms of settings and where to position the electrodes as well as important scenarios when Electrical stimulation devices should not be used such as with a heart pacemaker. I hope this answers your question and my sincere thanks for your positive feedback. ❤️

It is important to exercise for general health and also because stronger muscles will actually take pressure off your pelvic floor during everyday activities. There are many general strength exercises that are appropriate for men with pelvic floor problems and others that are potentially unsafe. I've actually written a couple of books about pelvic floor safe exercises, this is a special interest of mine. Will it help you if I make a UA-cam video on pelvic floor friendly exercises for men with pelvic floor problems for general strengthening that help to avoid overloading and potentially damaging the pelvic floor? Let me know. If there is interest in this from other men too then I will happily film this video for you.

      @moezbenmansour5547 Hi there, yes running can cause pelvic floor problems for some people (not all). Burning and itching in the anus need to be assessed and treated accordingly. Your doctor may do further testing to establish the exact cause of your problem as it sounds as though the exact cause has not been firmly established. The correct treatment is based upon assessment and diagnosis of the condition.

Shallow single leg squats are also great for strength and stability on the Smith machine. I hope this helps!

    Aside from doing correct kegel exercises wouldn't exercising the muscles in the lower abdominal, transverse abdominal, and inner thighs and groin promote blood flow to the area improving circulation? Just a question.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  Рік тому

      @veloxversutusvigilans Hey there, great question but unfortunately increased blood flow to an area doesn’t equate to increased strength and endurance. For example you could sit and do calf pumps (ankles bend and extend) all day and there will be no increase in calf muscle strength/endurance despite the increased blood flow. Muscles need to actively contract to strengthen. Also there’s no evidence to suggest that these exercises will increase blood flow to an area. I’m wondering why you are asking about a benefit from increased blood flow, is there something you’ve read or heard?

      @Michelle Kenway I completely understand the need for pelvic floor muscle improvement to improve erectile dysfunction and penile function. On the other hand exercise in general improves circulation and combined with diet would promote weight loss and improved circulation in obese, those with hypertension, or even promote a healthier mind in those suffering with mental health conditions. I would make a general connection between increased blood flow and circulation to the groin area and the body in general along with increased nitric oxide production as a way for the body to be better able to fill the spongey tissues and improve issues one may be having. I probably didn't really explain my thoughts completely in the original question. I find your content to be very informative and appreciate it being put out for all to view.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  11 місяців тому +1

      @prateeksundar2960 Great question! This really depends on whether the pelvic floor muscles are weak. In men with weak pelvic floor muscles, deep-loaded squats can increase the load on the pelvic floor causing further weakening. In men with normally functioning pelvic floor muscles, squats should not be an issue provided they are not at risk of pelvic floor problems. Regular Kegels can help maintain the condition of the pelvic floor muscles in men to allow them to do more intense exercises such as squats.

The size of the weight, placement of the weight and the type of squat all come into play. I discuss squats more in this recent video on pelvic floor safe exercises for men (squats start at 0:57) see here ua-cam.com/video/3TyC6DRWqCM/v-deo.htmlsi=gEXbw7zRyGdbO-8- I would also mention that wall squats that don't involve forward leaning can be a useful alternative in addition to lunging for pelvic floor friendly quad and glute strengthening. In fact isolation exercises does not work. We should do these compount multi joint movements but the beginner versions!!!
    I am searching the net for long long years and ı find the solution to be again the versions of the same movements!!!!
    For example wall push ups and wall planks. With these version you will not have too much pressure in the problematic areas!! And also you can do all with rotations!!! Single arm planks and push ups!!!
    Or the glute bridge but very little (or no height at all just tilting pelvis forwards and zurück)
    And for the squat 90 degree squat not deep squat!!
    And in the plates you can find all kinds of little squats and hip hinges!!
    The weshape videos, body harmonics videos, movenat videos, beginner pilates are very helpful.

      Thank you for sharing your perspective and personal experience. As a trained Physiotherapist I fully support exercises involving functional whole body movements however when there is a specific problem or deficit in a specific muscle or group of muscles as in pelvic floor problems, then specific pelvic floor muscle training is indicated for rehabilitation.
      Your comment raises the exact issue for me making this video to help men who are seeking to recover or improve their pelvic floor muscle function especially when they suffer from pelvic floor problems.
      Specificity in muscle training refers to the well established scientific principle that training a particular muscle or muscle group in a specific way will lead to adaptations in that muscle/group. In other words you should train the muscles that are involved in that exercise or movement using a similar movement pattern, resistance, and range of motion.
      Whole body exercises that do not actively train the pelvic floor muscles will unfortunately not restore pelvic floor muscle function. This is why pelvic floor physiotherapists are trained in evidence based research that supports Kegel exercises or pelvic floor exercises to restore and improve pelvic floor muscle function. Once this is estabished then these muscles can be actively engaged in functional whole body movements too. All the best to you for your future health and wellness and I hope this information is helpful.
