The song was written by Townes van Zandt who is in the video in the last scene in the diner. He's the man with his back to Pancho & Lefty playing a guitar.
Seven Spanish Angels by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson is quite beautiful also. Merle Haggard singing My Favorite Memory is great too! Love your reactions!
Very good movie called 'Barbarosa' that some images are from. Cult clasic western, one of my favourites staring Willie who is a very good actor as well. Realistic take on the times.
I have always Loved this video .Two greats, together. I am partial to Willie. He conquers Anything that he does. Acting singing in that special Willie voice and That Guitar, oh my goodness. All of his love songs are just for me. Merle also had a wonderful voice, unique for him ❤
Heard the song a million times but never seen this video to it. Thank you, Sir. There are tons and tons of songs by Nelson and Haggard you could dive in to. Together or seperate. Two of the best ever.
Townes van Zandt, who wrote the song, is shown many times in the video. The easiest place to describe is near the end of the song he's the guy with the guitar in the group of people sitting around several tables with white tops, but he's here & there all through it. One of Townes' best songs is "To Live is to Fly." Best version, Cowboy Junkies.
It has Mexican musical influences. He has a son, Lucas Nelson, who sounds alot like him. He taught Bradley Cooper how to play the guitar in the movie, A Star is Born. He has a band too.
I love the original by Townes Van Zandt, but any song that Willie and Merle did together was fabulous before they even recorded it. :) Townes probably loved to hear them do his song. Thank you for reacting to this one.
Townes is in the final diner scene playing the guitar. I think that's a definite songwriter stamp of approval...of course, how crazy do you have to be to disapprove of Willie and Merle covering your magnum opus?
Great reaction and commentary. I love how you recognize the different sound as compared to other country. If you want, I suggest checking out The Highwaymen - ‘Highwayman’
When I was a boy there was Country and Western music. They dropped the western part. It would be like they dropped the B in R and B music. Or Roll didn’t have a Rock. I miss the Western monicker.
True story the real poncho I think only left a gold watch behind it's in a museum somewhere. I couldn't tell you if there was really a lefty but I can tell you that there was a poncho.
Willie and Merle had just finished recording their album when Willie heard a version of this song by Emmylou Harris. He woke Merle up at 4am yelling "We gotta record this song!" They immediately went into the studio and cut it, and not only did it become the album's title track it became a monster #1 hit.
Please react to Emmylou Harris' version of this song. Willie and Merle heard her version of this song and said, "That's the way we want to do it!" And they did. Thank you!
The first federales that they do close ups of in most of the shots, who is the one with the guitar at the end, is Townes Van Zandt,, who wrote this song. His life was tragic but he.was an amazing song writer and incredible on the guitar. Highly recommend checking him out. Also Merles live songs, with very few exceptions, blow away his studio work as far as voice quality.
If you ask 5 people to define "traditional" country music, you'll get five different answers. It's always fundamentally been a marketing label, featuring musicians with a rich complexity of backgrounds and styles. But, trends will do what trends will do, and certain sounds get developed and associated with certain eras that people look back on with nostalgia. I doubt there's any musical genre this doesn't happen to.
@@DjPjrocReacts911 If you want the definitive list of what is "classic" or "traditional" country artists, react to George Jones' "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes".
For me “traditional country” sounds like Hank Sr., but real traditional country is just folk music that came over from Europe, specifically Scotch-Irish folk, which branched off into many different genres as time went on.
The song was written by the great Townes Van Zandt, a third country legend. The skinny guy with the guitar sitting behind Willie and Merle towards the end.
@leslietayloriii8405 0 seconds ago The man playing the guitar in the dinner is Towns VanZandt . He wrote this song and also played the part of 1 of the federallys
been enjoying watching your reviews. love all these old outlaw country artists. if you want to try some of the new "outlaw" artist check out tyler childers "nose on the grindstone" from our vinyl sessions. or colter wall "kate mccannon" from 16 brewery sessions. both of them have very unique voices
Wille doesn't sing a song, he "styles" it. The beat doesn't seem to matter, he makes it work. Merle's voice is so rich. Both wrote songs from (their) life. Three geniuses on this song, Van Zant was as good a songwriter as any, better than most. Enjoy your insights.
New Comers to Willie do not realize how legendary his guitar pickin’ was. There is a great clip called “Willie’s Guitar, Trigger” This very old guitar is such a powerful staple to Willie, that, when Willie was in trouble with the IRS, he had to hide Trigger, because of the money they (IRS) could gain in an auction.
Two of the greats of country music!!! I've been to several Merle concerts (most the time we were both drunk. LOL) Never got the chance to see the great Willie!!! Spending some time in Bakersfield, I was partial to Merle!! But, love Willie too!
I did see Willie in concert 1 time. He was already getting older and slowing down. He was live of course, and every song was impeccable, but he didn't talk to the crowd. I was kinda disappointed , but I'm always impressed when a live performer is spot on, every single time. I gotta say the same about Brooks and Dunn too (though they played and had fun with the crowd!! ). Ronnie did not miss a beat, all the energy and perfection, right there. in every single song and Kix was a joy as always!!
A great song by 2 great friends. Back in 2017 I think they did a song called [ It's all going to pot ] really cool video to see 2 old legends in their twilight make an album and smoking pot. Also Willie wrote a song after Merle died called [ He will never be gone ] Merle's son plays guitar and willie's wife sings harmony. Just a beautiful song about their friendship.
Gotta listen to "My Favorite Memory" by Merle Haggard. No matter how many time I try to sing the opening verse it never sounds right, seems like merle can only due it and Its such a beauty song and my all time favorite drinking song and some what sober "I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink" If you get bored look up Daryl Singletary, he does a cover of Johnny paycheck " old violin"

Lefty did Pancho dirty. Great song, btw, the guy playing the guitar in the diner at the end is Townes Van Zandt, he wrote this song.

The ultimate friendship and betrayal saga. Townes van Zant's masterlpiece. As a tributte van Zant is featured in this video in almost every scenel.
