- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2008 | The thriving capital of Greece sprawls out from the foot of its magnificent Acropolis. We'll tour the must-sees of ancient Athens: the Parthenon, Agora, and amazing National Archaeological Museum. We'll take the fast-paced pulse of the modern city, but waste no time getting to Rick's favorite side-trip destinations: the ruins of the mystical oracle at Delphi and a fast boat to the romantic, traffic-free isle of Hydra. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #greece

I am from Turkey and i can say we are lucky that to be neighbour of Greece. Such a nice people and history.
❤️ from Greece!
Thank you but most of us don’t feel the same way. Not about the people but your government who wants to occupy Greek regions. If you really love us protest and push your government to stay at their borders and to take their army off the island of Cyprus too.
We need more people like you in the world. Respect each others cultures and build bridges. seni selamlıyorum my friend from Athens.
I dare say the Greeks are very unlucky to have you as neighbours.
This cannot be real, no Turkish person would say this haha
Greece is the cradle of civilization it shaped the world today we are all Greeks
I traveled to Europe, two years ago. Athens is one of my favorite cities. I spent a week there. I really enjoyed the main square, the flea market, the agora and the monastiraki neighborhood. I’ll never forget it. The Athens Hub Hostel is one of the best. 🇬🇷
I have been to Greece 4 times; it is the most beautiful country I have seen.
Love Greece and the Greeks. Much respect from Denmark 🇬🇷🇩🇰 I will viste Athens after the pandemic
Thanks for you kind words and you're welcome anytime in Athens.
Thank you very much. The Acropolis, the Delphi and the Epidaurus theatre are a must go!
greece is such the best state of the world
nation*
Its actually a nation-state@@nerdyowl1672
Come on Greece is just heaven the islands the beaches the food the people the architecture EVERYTHING IS JUST SO GOOD
@scrimHerolex: thanks for your kind words about my country!
Greece is more than a myth, there is a reason why we believed in gods and these reasons you can feel if you was in greece, of course for us greeks it's an indescribable energy which we feel since ever, it's the DNA.
THANK you and God bless you!
I'm going for the first time this September. I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Greece. My favorite country on earth
Every time I watch a Rick Steves show I want to move to that place!
Greetings from iraq(Mesopotamia) to greece and Her people
Thank you and Hello to you too!
Kill pop
you are arabized now, sorry.
I cannot believe that Rick missed out the Marble Stadium built for the first of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Absolutely fantastic and only a few hundred yards from Syntagma Square !
Back again next week to The Peloponese. After my home in Cornwall, favourite place on earth.
i love Athens and all Greece people
Sanjeev Kumar thanks for that
Hey indian
Yes the country and the people are unique. Magical, I can't explain. Such warm people out there, I never want to go back to Holland.
Greece, in my opinion, out of all the countries in Europe, is the most fascinating and amazing because of its (ancient and medieval) civilization, artifacts, mythology and architectures. But I've only been to Athens and Sounion and I still want to go travel to Greece again (in other places in Greece like Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Sparti, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Delphi, Mt Athos and Olympus and many more). 🇬🇷 🇬🇷 Greece #1!! 🇬🇷 🇬🇷
Anyone else jealous that Rick and his crew get to travel to such beautiful places and eat scrumptious and wonderfully looking food?
I am
It's unfortunate that Ricj Steeves stopped making travel videos. The format was so attractive. We always want to go to the country
that he presents. In the mean time we can watch the old ones.
It is April 20th, 2024. Hello World, from Edmonton Alberta Canada. Flashback to Spring 1978 when in my mid 20's, now 69, my good friend Kim spent 3.5 months backpacking ALL OVER Europe & G.B. So many Countries & Cities & Towns. Sleeping in Hostels, homes, student Hostels, gravel pits, farmers fields, rattle snake infested, as it turned out, to stunningly beautiful homes & apartments, in beautiful sunny days & torrential rain driven roadside memories, Greece has been CALLING ME to return, as with so many other locations, but I Will be Athens Bound, maybe to Jimmy's Student House, LOL! KALEVI on Creti where we stayed & even worked (duleahed) in hot greenhouses picking g cucumbers & tomatoes, then WALKING THRU THE MOUNTAINS TO CHORA SAVAKIA!! Scorpions, Snakes, & HEAT! LOL! LIFETIME MEMORIES. Now, without Kim,R.I.P., I (WE) WILL BE BACK! PART CRUISE, Part HOSTEL & HOTEL, NO part GRAVEL PIT, GREECE, HERE I COME! Late Spring or later, but 2024, Please "LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON", I WON'T IGNORE YOUR CALLING ANY LONGER! I'M JUST RECOVERING FROM SOME SERIOUS STUFF, ALMOST GOOD TO GO, THEN "NOTHING CAN STOP ME, THEN! WOW! IF O LY YOU COULD SEE THE SMILE ON MY FACE! ON KIM'S FACE,FROM ABOVE, ALSO! P.S. I'm sure to spend 2-3 MONTHS in total so will SPLURGE on a EURORAIL PASS so I can relive as many GREAT CITY & COUNTRIES TOWNS & "FARMERS FIELDS", LOL, as I remember every one as though it were YESTERDAY! Thank you GREECE, LOOK WHAT YOU'VE STARTED!!! DID I REALLY SAY "69"? CAN'T BE! AGAIN, LOL!
I am amazed at the Greek landscape
That food in Hydra!! How I miss it. 25 years ago I lived in Athens! it has changed so much! Such beauty and vibrancy, and so much history... and the best looking young men in the world, still! ;-)
Greece is so historical, cultural, and beautiful. 😍
Why don’t you say something we don’t know??
ATHENS I LOVE YOU
Wish i can go to Greece before I die. Cradle of virtues. Wonderful people and wonderful country :)
I just got here yesterday! book a flight and come! You'll love it!
Athens is my favorite place in Greece. Absolutely Beautiful
Sure, what a beautiful place
Amazed by the history of Ancient Greece. It is a must go for me.
+1
I'm counting, I will leave Amsterdam for good in 8 days. I just feel from the inside this will be the best move in my life. Sold all my belonging including my house and got a job in Athens.
I feel so blessed.
Q Werf I think you’ll be disappointed my friend. Life in Athens is not easy. It’s a dirty city with little infrastructure and people can be rude. Things have gotten worse after the crisis. As a visitor you might think it’s nice but living in Athens is completely different. I believe Amsterdam is a much friendlier city to live
@@qwerf1897 please let us know, how's it been going for you in Athens thus far.
@@qwerf1897 I believe you totally. The best to you !
Majestic Parthenon,majestic Athens!
Delphi is an amazing spot. the new museum there is excellent too.

You can consult me for everything not only war.
Hey MusicHistory100, is it true that Delphi has strongest mystical and spiritual power., and also healing potentials -- never been there but admire from far??

Greece is the best and safest destination for your 2021 summer vacations.
Athens is a city of outstanding plurality ,where all historical periods and art movements are present. From ancient and medieval remains to contemporary art exhibitions, this city has a lot to offer to demanding and curious visitors. Greek people are very helpful and friendly. Moreover,Athens offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities and can be your base for further traveling. For example, you can visit chalandri, marousi, kifissia, pireus, nauplio, thebes and many islands, like Euboia, aigina, spetses.Gastronomical and relaxation experiences are also widely available.Greece is a nice country to visit for its culture and nice weather.
Greece humenity approaches artistic upgrades utilizing till further new generation watch wonderfully.❤🎉
I visited Greece in 2010 and this brings back so many wonderful memories! The country is stunningly beautiful and the people are wonderful, especially if you learn some Greek beforehand, which isn't that difficult.
That last sentence was for you, Rick: although you're getting better at pronouncing foreign words, several modern Greek letters have changed their sounds, as in B is now V, D is TH as in 'this,' G is a 'soft' G not found in English (a voiced X to be precise), so Hydra is pronounced EE-thra.
One thing that was especially charming about the Agora was all the tortoises walking around in the grass, something that isn't advertised and left for visitors to discover on their own. Another big plus for Athens is how it cares for its stray dogs and cats, who get regular checkups from veterinarians and are not left to starve. As a result they are quite friendly, and the dogs even obey traffic signals!
Jeff Rey you mean the entire tourism community of Greece managed to keep the tortoise “Easter Egg” to surprise people and you just blew it? At a minimum, you should edit your comment to begin with 🚨MASSIVE SPOILER 🚨
@@eliedgecomb4903 So glad I read yours first.
Another gem from Rick Stevens! In the 1990s. I took a trip with my daughter to Athens and also over to Ephesus. That all of the Mediterranean was seafaring strikes you most clearly when you see these small port cities and know their fame.
Thank you again for the superb camera work and the quiet thoroughly knowledgeable lectures!
Greece is the word, for peace.
It's nice to see something positive and up-beat! I'm married to an 'Athenian' and only get all the doom and gloom about the economy.
I could reallllly go some Gyro now! :)
That is IT ! I am so hungry now...... I see such great food...... and great sunsets.... I am thinking I will gain weight just watching..... but maybe dance it off in one of the dancing places older traditional dancing places..... Athens..... really beautiful.
"They gained syllables" - thank you, Rick!
I love Greece!
beautiful amazing greece
Greece may be poor in economy, but rich in history.

Thank you for exallent
2020 Greece ❤🌐
Rick Steves has motivated me to book a flight to Athens this week and following this journey but added a few more destinations to my itinerary such as Meteora, Syros and Santorini. I am excited and anxious at the same time considering the current situation. I think we can live and go and on our lives with caution rather than living in fear and hide.
How was the trip? I'm thinking of going in June
@@christinadeshaies4465 it was the most amazing thing I've ever done. I am sure all places in Greece are equally stunning, more so if you like history but the places I've visited were breathtaking, especially Meteora and Santorini. Greeks are very welcoming and helpful if you are traveling alone. Have fun!
Beautiful! I enjoyed every segment of this video. Thank you Rick.
Great city...love that u can see it on tv

Wow 😮 one of my favorite 🌎 planet so unique looks like very peaceful place to go thanks 🙏 again sir Steve great effort god bless and peace
Thank you for this very informative and beautiful video.
Glorious to return visually to the magnificence of Greece.
I travelled here in the 1980s and this was an even better trip!
Congratulations as well to your cameraman’s impeccable work as you inform and his eye moves slowly in partnership.

I love Athens
Once again, a wonderful tour. Used your book to help guide me around Athens. Found my way to Hydra and a pebbly beach a few steps from the port well away from the crowds and the organized island day trip. Per your guidance caught a public bus to Delphi to leisurely explore the ruins and catch guidance from the Oracle. You have enhanced my travels and knowledge of art throughout the world. Thank you for your wonderful life's work.
Thank you for this preview Rick, will be going to Athens & Santorini next Sept 2016, so hopefully will check out all the places you feature here...
Steve you truly are the best!👌
Tnx for all your posts

Your videos are educational, facinating and wonderful! Thank you!

The food he has in his hand at the beginning.. is SOOOOOO GOODD!! i eat it every morning before going to bed :)
Excellent show by "Rick Steves' Europe" Rick is a terrific, warm host. All of Greece is a miracle on Earth. Finally, it's nice to hear Leonidis pronounced correctly for a change.
Thanks a lot for sharing so beautiful and important video!
love how the lady at the dinner table cracks up !
I remember that lady in the 8th minute. I was there too in august 2013. I was walking around Anafiotika with a girl, we could smell the flowers in the air and we sat at a bench nearby and we heard that lady singing
oh my gosh this is the purest thank you so much
Great video! Thanks...visiting Greece and three islands in April, can’t wait!
Your travel video is different from others. Yours is always had a educational view point, as you starts the commentary and the corresponding video's are interesting to learn the history of the places, objects, etc. It encourages to know more of that, but your video goes off. You are the only person who depicts travel video of your own style. I like it.
Absolutely loved this! So informative and presented so well
I love your travels,so insightful and beautiful.
Thanks for this great video.
Hi Rick, I always enjoy your videos & just wanted offer some useful tips to your viewers on Athens. I know it's not easy to go everywhere and film everything but I'd like to suggest just a few places that I think you should include in your videos of Athens. Firstly the beaches in the South of the city and I'm not talking about the beaches in Glyfada or Faliro I mean the great beaches in Voula, Vouliagmeni, Kavouri and Varikiza [20 mins from city centre]. Also the natural lake in Vouliagmeni known as Lake Vouliagmeni is a must when in Athens. Moving to the Northern part of the city I think people would like to see places like Kifissia and Kefalari...ok not ideal for tourists as these places are expensive but to show another side of Athens. I mean why not. Kifissia is full of great places to eat, drink, shop & has some great hotels too it's a lovely neighbourhood. Even Kolonaki in central Athens remains unknown to many tourists....they would love it if they knew about it....And let's not forget the great restaurant choices in Glyfada a neighbourhood located also in the South. Anyway just offering some advice. Thx
An outstanding video. Very rewarding. Enjoyable for everyone.
I love Rick's travel programs - he is so good and very knowledgeable - such a joy watching his travel programs.
I've been to all the places mentioned in Athens plus I did a day cruise to 3 islands (Hydra, Aegina and Poros) - all of them were great. Delphi is a must visit for sure but I'm surprised he didn't do the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion (especially around sunset) - that place is amazing at sunset
Athens is amazing.
Such a wonderful introduction to Athens and Greece, Thank you! Still, just an introduction, since only few things could be presented in its restricted durance. As a born and bread athenian, i find it too litlle to even give a partly idea of the things that make Athens a place to go for! to start with, far as museums are concenrned, there was no reference to two of its most spectacular if not most important museums (among lots of others like the islamic art museum, the byzantine museam , the national gallery, etc) which are among the biggest, most interesting and worldwide known of the city: The new magnificent Museum of the Akropolis (where the amazing treasures of the findings on the holy rock are exposed), and the Benaki ones. Second, no reference was made to the fantastic athenian coast line, the so-called "Athens riviera" where one can be within few minutes from the city center to swim in sparkling clean waters, or just relax. Third, nothing was said about the "panathinean stadium" -so called "kallimarmaro" =made of fine marble, the ancient Athenian stadium in the city center, which was revovated in the end of the 19th century for the first modern olympic games (1896). forth, the olympic site, where the brilliant olympic games of 2004 took place, was not mentioned at all, and neither were the city’s beautiful northern suburbs (Kifisia, kefalari etc)and mount Parnes, which, located on a higher altitude , are in a full contrast to the ones by the coast ( a central European environment versus a fully mediterranean one, all in one city!). Fifth, two high quality multi cultural centers the "Hellenic world" on Pireos str. and the "home of art and culture" of the Onasis institution. In both there are lots to see and enjoy! Sixth, the lots of other than Delphi important and historical spots around the city (Mycenes/city of Agamemnon the leader of the Troyan war, Epidavros with its famous unique ancient theater, ancient Korinth, Cape Sounion at the most southern end of the Athens riviera/Attica peninsula with the glorious temple of Poseidon overlooking the Aegean sea, the pretty and historical neoclassical town of Nafplia/ first capital city (1830)of the new greek state, etc.etc. Athens also owns the best european planetarium, a fabulous "modern art" museum, beautiful hills (its most spectacular one, right in its heart, lecabetus, gives you a fantasic view of all the city and even more), more beautiful islands (other than Hydra)of amazing beauty ( poros, hydra, spetses etc) located a stone's throw from the city, historical monasteries and churches (the monastery of Dafhni /”moni Daphniou” is protected by Unesco as a monument of the world cultural heritage )high quality concert halls (like the "megaron musikis" complex) and numerous very good theaters, amazing entertainment sites (don't miss "gazi", the Athen's "village" so to say) and next year, its new ultra modern national library and Opera house complex by its "faliro" promenade will add extra prestige to a city which is always waiting for you to really descover, live and enjoy and not just see! Last but not least, its excellent urban transportation system (which was mentioned in the film too) its fantastic weather, its unique cultural life (do go to a listen to some, any, good greek singer in one of the very many concerts given in the open theaters of the city if you are here in the summer time, or go the famous "epidavros" theater for a classic greek drama performance and not only, or go to an Athens festival performance at the ancient Odeum by the akropolis etc etc), its friendly open and warmhearted people, all these and not only, are just some of the reasons why my city is one and only, and visiting it a must for everyone! Thank you for reading this!!!
I'm sure if he were to mention all of these wonderful places, the video would have been 2 hours long!
@@jsprite123 Let's hope these mentions will encourage him to make more videos like the last one.
Great mentions. Now that you've mentioned these places, perhaps he'll make another video on Athens.
You're right. My trip to Attica and Sterea Ellada will comprise this and much more astonishing stuff
I think he needs to make ten videos if not more to cover everything you mention but this was a very good introduction, very interesting and enjoyable to watch nevertheless.
Amazing video Rick, you are very talented.
Rick’s traveldocus are the best! Wonderful and informative video about place I will soon visit, I hope!👍❤️
Rick Steves always delivers the best content! Great look into Athens.
