- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Dublin's story is of feast and famine - from its 18th-century Golden Age to its 20th-century struggles for independence to its boomtime today. We explore the town's foreboding castle and patriotic jail, plus Trinity College with its Book of Kells. Later we party in Temple Bar, awash in Celtic music and Guinness. We side-trip to the prehistoric necropolis of Newgrange and the medieval monastery at Glendalough, deep in the scenic Wicklow Mountains. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland

I don’t think I will ever be able to visit any Country in Europe. I am from India. But I am very happy to visit places with Rick Steves. It’s fun. I love to visit places. And I am also very fond of showing around the places who come to visit us. Thanks Rick.
I love India. If one loves craft, India is the place to visit!!!😳👌
@@ronaran8420 absolutely right. You should certainly come to India to see mainly art and craft and architecture in abundance, of this beautiful country. You are sure to meet lovely people here, who will accept you, love you, serve you without any reason. Welcome 🙏Thanks
@@busybeenature9092😊Thanks! I met such people indeed. Been there three times. Which part do you live in?
You never know. You can visit Europe, if you make it happen! :)
Canada sent a ship from Toronto during the potato famine to help the Irish. That same boat is still there as museum in Dublin. A Canadian flag flies proudly on their government building til this day. I had the awesome opportunity to see this on my trip to Ireland in 2018. As usual really nice tour Rick !
My husband and I got engaged on Ireland! It made the trip that more magical! The people, scenery and food were just wonderful! We hope to bring our children back someday to get to know their Irish roots!
congratulation😊
I visited Ireland in 2006 for ten days I went around the whole wonderful country it is the land of legends and beauty
Oh great to know we can see the whole country in this time!
I have always wanted to visit Ireland due to the music, culture and the people.
You have to!
@@aznzensation I’m visiting Ireland and Northern Ireland later this summer and I can’t wait.
@@tobiojo6469 renting a car is a must
I only went to Dublin once around 9 or 10 years ago..loved it..great place ..friendly helpful people..i will look forward to visiting it again..fantastic place.
Go to Cork City and tour the South East Coast, especially the Rebel battle towns such as Wexford and Enniscorthy. The film "Brooklyn" was filmed partly in Enniscorthy, but it is also a famous battleground on Vinegar Hill where many Irish lads gave their lives for a Free Ireland. Brooklyn is a fun and funny ficticous film which tells a story which takes place in both Ireland & New York.
Love Ireland and miss it very much.
Me too
Hi Eli, how are you. Greetings from Ireland 😘😀
My dad's ancestry is Irish, on one side and Scottish on the other so all my aunt's & uncle's had the brightest red hair. Lol. Good Lord the temper to go with it too!! Lol. Loved it when Steve's says it older than the pyramids. Lol. Love to visit some day. Beautiful ppl. Beautiful country. Hopefully Ireland sticks to it's roots and doesn't become cookie cutter like the rest.
I'm also half Irish on my dad's side! My paternal grandmother and both of my aunts were and still are redheads. Sadly, I neither have green eyes nor am I a redhead. I have blonde hair and blue eyes courtesy of my mom's Dutch ancestry. Though I lack these traits, I still have one trait that sticks out like the Ring of Kerry: a stubborn attitude and a temper to match! You back this lass into a corner and I'll come out swinging!
" Hopefully Ireland sticks to it's roots and doesn't become cookie cutter like the rest."
And what's that supposed to mean?
Nice shot with the hurling Steve!
Thank you Rick. We visited Ireland this month and truly enjoyed every minute there. Your videos inspired and informed us. We loved Ireland, its people and natural beauty. Public transportation was efficient, reliable, and cheap. We stayed there for ten days and did not need a car. Galway and Sligo were particularly lovely, but we also liked Dublin. Looking forward to a round two soon. Thank you Irish people. You truly have a heaven on Earth.
Europe is rich of history and Greenery. I Love it.
Beautiful show, Rick. Ireland is gorgeous!
Loved your video of Dublin. We were there last Fall and can't wait to go again. Two weeks in Ireland are not enough!!
We are going in November. Cannot wait
Hello Alice
Me too!
Going in 2020. To swap green and lush fir the harshness of a Canadian winter. Thanks for the warning around Temple Bar. Look forward to communing, kayaking, chatting, perhaps even digging up some peat bricks
clean and beautiful, silence is visible in even video.. wow lovely place to visit or live..
Visited the home of my grandparents a few years ago. Waterford, Waterville and Dublin. Loved your show. I could feel the souls of my ancestors.
Even as a Brit, I find the memorial to where the Easter Rising very moving. Britain very much paid the price for treating Ireland so badly over the years. The wording of a British built memorial on the Antrim Coast road for the Potato Famine is case in point:
"(...) Britannia gave her bounty with her tears and bear this record, though in phrases crude, of England's love and Ireland's gratitude,"
The wording on that controversial memorial to say the least paints a different picture of Irish history. One that whitewashes what actually happened, London showed their "love" for Ireland by doing absolutely nothing to help when the potato crops failed year after year. To make matters worse, they insisted on the Irish exporting other crops that could have eased the worst effects of the lack of potatoes for the population that depended on it (such as grain)
I was amused by the keep of the grass signs and those who cheerfully ignored them. Not a lot of them, but no one fussed. Ireland has the nicest people of any place in the world. Just delightful.
I would love to visit Ireland. According to my family history, our family came from Ireland.
It's a beautiful country and the music is soul soothing.
Thanks for a well presented video on my homeland , 👌
jenzerbabiee1 hello, would you be so kind to tell me how the things are going with jobs in Ireland? Is it much difficult to find any? I'm a musician and I'm a huge fan of first classic hard rock music, just wondering if Ireland is well developed in music sphere :)
Templar Knight have any advice for a novice to euro travel? I like to talk and eat and stomp my feet!
Awesome video. Now Christmas 2022, I'm headed for 5 months in England and 2 months in and around Dublin .. my bucket list top items fulfilled, starting in 2 weeks.

Enjoy my beautiful city, failte
This video, as well as all others, is very much appreciated. Many thanks to Rick Steves & his team.
I was in Dublin and Kilkenny last month, and still enjoy this video a great deal, though. On that trip, I learned that the Irish pronounce "TH" as "T". So, at 11:12 min, the tour guide pronounces, "There are TREE leaves and one stem", but actually, she means, "There are THREE leaves ...".
For the number 33, Irish people pronounce "Ter-ti Tree." No joking! That is so cute of them.
Lol!
That's because they mix the English and Irish languages together. THREE leaves comes from the Irish a trí (3). A haon, a dó, a trí, a ceathair. A hay-n, a doh, a tree, a kya-her = 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
Hi Rick,
I've been following your videos quite a while now, although they're quite old now already. At the moment I am watching the Ireland flight. What a pleasure to see you and your family at their ancestors place. I really enjoy. Thanks so much for your wonderful work.
Kindly
Thomas
Anyone else went like, whoa when Rick nailed that red target?
Thank you Rick Steves for sharing you travel vocation with the world!!!
Dublin. The city I loved since I was a boy and I love now even more because my beloved daughter lives there.
I loved everything here. As a student of literature , I read a lot about James Joyce and his depiction of Dubliners under the influence of modernism. But watching this video gives me a different experience.
Great video, Rick!
I really like Ireland because my favourite band - U2? Nope! THE CORRS!
Greetings from Brazil, guy!
+Gabriel Marcos - Obrigado pela risada, hiena!
+Micky Oliver yes i love the corrs, great music
Guy? You’re not Irish, cara.
U2: ... The most un Irish band of them all.
@@wolfthequarrelsome504 think you'll find that U 2 are Irish .
They may not be typically Irish but they are Irish .
Dublin can be over looked for the other cities and countryside but a few days here will open your heart as Dublin are a mixed bunch from all over Ireland living beside Dubliners (Those who are born in Dublin). 2 to 3 days here is best as we are a small city that you can walk in a few hours.
Rick Steve. You are a very very good man. Wonderful shows.
Been here a year ago and drove around to Belfast and Galway. I cannot wait to head back.
I traced my Irish ancestry to Dublin, Ireland, a few days ago. My ancestor, T. Pursell, immigrated from Dublin, Ireland, in the late 1600's, to Dover, Delaware.
Same here, but to Virginia.
I don't know if you'll see this but, if you can prove your Irish ancestry to the Ireland consulate with proper documents, you can claim your Irish citizenship.
@@labibwajdi3169 Don´t want americans here too much..if they voted for Adolf Trump
There is no need to add 'Ireland' when you speak about Dublin.
fool
It is nice to revisit Ireland and see the places again. I was with the tour for a week visiting the familiar places I have been.
I've been to and inside of Newgrange, back in 87. Very comfortable feeling going into a burial mound. No Burrow Wrights though.
Most informative travel programme, clear and well paced
I am so excited to visit Ireland this coming Fall!!!!!
I am going in a few months. Would be interested to hear what you think
Thank for the Ireland. tour you did the nice tour today Rick .
Was in Dublin and committed the cultural faux pas of grabbing the pint glass before the Guinness was properly poured.
Haha I did the exact same, I was so embarassed!

That Guiness looks delicious. I would like to drink one for each of the 12 steps, have with it a nice corned beef sandwich and then welcome that nice numb feeling. :) :)
Can't wait to visit Ireland including Dublin on August I'm already excited 😀
What a trip! Sir good work. Appreciated.

Amazing Dublin experience.........

Hi just been watching the film's around the north of Scotland and they were great thanks, Martin first time r
Rick, I don't know if you read the comments but I just wanted to thank you for creating these videos for people to enjoy, especially during the pandemic. I hope you're doing well, God bless you.
As A Dubliner Myself... If You Want To See The REAL Dublin, Don't Go Near Temple Bar.... It's Mainly Just Tourists And Loud Music..... Go To A Pub Like The Foggy Dew Or Sweeneys..... You'll See The Real Dublin There......
as a tourist there that bar was very cool but it was definitely nice to check out as many as possible. that city blew my mind how nice it is and the Country as a whole was amazing
+M. Cloak
Agree with that, but the problem is those places will inevitably become tourist attractions if ''tourists'' started visiting them.
+Cary Hawkins
Haha were they very friendly ?
+RovexHD everyone was friendly ofcourse. where I'm from you look behind you every 5 minutes. ...never felt that way when we were there
Go for the literature pub crawl! Then you will be introduced to many really cool pubs! When we were there, we love Arthur's pub and Lord Edward
There really is so much to do in Dublin, it's great.
Like What????
@@patricklamshear6662 You must be great fun to be around you.
there's mounds and rocks with circular designs like that in west virginia, us.

I will love the Pub crawl. I work together with a irsh crew - to 2 events: Sankt Patrick and a Irish Festival... Love it.
Well done sir!💚Sláinte!
Great information! Thanks 🙂
Dublin is one of the most historical city in europe
Marleine Alce not really most sites of historical importance have been demolished by the government
So is Warsaw. So is Berlin, Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Rome, etc.
Thank you 😊
Hi folks, I would strongly advise giving temple bar a miss.. unless you want to have over priced pints and get to know more americans, germans, brits etc.. Irish people try avoid it
Yeah it's a tourist trap.
Thank you. Which part of Dublin would you recommend staying in?
Scott Toney south side , maybe rathmines close to town but still nice try get to as close to the canal
@@AScottToney stay in the countryside or go down to kerry or up to donegal they are nice places there you go
The whole Temple Bar neighborhood is absolutely a tourist trap... but it's fun and worth spending some hours there (Among others, I had some drinks at The Auld Dubliner). Just don't forget to try some of the more authentic pubs, too.
I have many relatives in county Cork. It's a peaceful area with dreamy landscapes. I'll be back soon!
And the heart of IRA country
We spent an amazing week in Dublin (2014) and we could visit all the tourist attraction and we also got to visit some local places since my niece is living in Dublin. Blessed days !!! We are looking for to go back during Halloween :-)))))

"Europe through the back door?" :D :D :D :D nice
When I visited Ireland with a tour group in April 2004 we got to see The Book of Kells at Trinity College. It is the national treasure of Ireland. The Book of Kells is kept in a room that is darkened for preservation purposes. If memory serves me correctly one page of the book is turned each day.
very nice video!
When I visit Ireland my first destination of choice will be Mullingar and then to Dublin.
Great video
I was told by an Irish man in Dublin that drunk husbands used to go into the wrong houses and therefore the wrong beds and so the doors were painted different colours to help 'em find their proper beds...and wives.
MsAnne Trophy that probably wouldn’t bother my ex husband, somehow our door could be bright red and he would still find the wrong house, but that’s alright, let him be someone else’s concern for a night or 2! 😂😂😂😂😂
Storytelling lol
Excellent
I will save a lot to go and see Ireland!😊
Thank you
we didn't FEEL like a colony we WERE one

Saudades de Dublin!
My ancestors are from Ireland. For which I am thankful!
wish rick steve was my friend
I met him in Corte Madera, California just North of San Francisco (Marin County) where he gave a talk & showed a video at a bookstore. He had been on a trip to Iran. It was very interesting. He is much more political in person. When the Persians (Iran used to be Persia) found out he was American, everyone wanted to talk to him. They are very friendly in spite of huge murals on high walls declaring, "Death to America!" The average Persian on the street has no ill will to Americans. They understand that the people are not the government. You can see his trip to Iran on You Tube.
Spelling his last name wrong is a bad start in trying to become his friend. LOL
Dublin country public rich in deep everything seeing world .most is great
Is this really 2002? It's nice to see a historical chapter in Ireland's past but 16 years on there so much change in this isle.
Very nice
You should finish the video saying "Sláinte".
He probably couldn’t pronounce it
( it’s sounds as “ Slaunsha)
