This guy was voted italian Footballer of the year in 1989 and got third at the Ballon d'or. This means he won that award vs van Basten Gullit, Mätthäus, Platini, Maradona etc. all playing the same league. I think that says it all

Not only, in 1990 he deserved the balloon d'or. He was great in defence and scored or created goals in the round 16, quarter final, semi final and final. For my personal opinion, the best performance in the history of the world cup.
Maradona actually wasn't elligible for the award because until 1995 only Europeans playing in Europe were elligible for it.
Played at a high level for close to a decade. He was the first full back that enthralled me as a kid. He was just such a quality player
He retired over 25 years ago and we still don't know his favorite foot

Andreas Brehme immediately changed Inter Milan. Ambidextrous, fast, with a phenomenal eye to set up center forwards with precise flanks....many Seria A teams had no answer to his constantly switching position....a Leader that never ever played statical.
In my opinion the absolute greatest leftback Germany ever produced. The way he and Lothar Matthäus made every match a battle was spectacular. Both were phenomenal under Trapattoni. And upfront you had Klinsmann just waiting for the precise flanks Brehme would provide.
He was the Arjen Robben of Leftbacks....fast, dynamic, charismatic....his left foot was Brazilian, his right foot German.

Definitely the best left back of all time.. He could play equally well with both feet but I am quite sure he's right-footed - his right foot for accuracy (the winning penalty/goal in WC1990) while his left foot for power (the penalty vs Morocco in in WC1986)...
What a player Brehme was. 1986 Mexico: scored on a penalty with his left foot (vs. Mexico), 1990 Italia: scored on penalties with his right foot (twice, vs England and Argentina). Brilliant.

He was in one of the greatest German teams ever. It was during that time when Gary Lineker coined the expression “football is about 22 men chasing a ball and eventually Germany win”. He was very energetic and technically gifted left back. Although I always hated German teams he was one of them I admired a lot. R.I.P.

I think that Zizou and his panenka in 2006, was better than Brehmen's penalty. But anyway, Andreas was one of the greatest players in the 80's and 90's. Amazing skills for a defense.

That Milan defense was insane, but they didn't had much goal...
A lot of them were liberos such as Koeman, Beckenbauer and sometimes Matthaus. This is why a lot of them have a high number of goals.

With his shooting it was impressive how often he'd take one touch and then BAM, he'd catch keepers out so often, and look at some of those crosses! He's the greatest full back ever because he also knew how to defend, absolutely ridiculous, RIP that man.

RIP Brehme !! MUNDIAL 1990 was the 1st football competition that I ever watched as a 6 year old child in Greece. Let's not forget that the only 6 players that played in both 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals were Brehme, Matheus and Berthold from W. Germany and Ruggeri , Burruchaga and Maradona from Argentina.
