what about a kettlebell? could i build strength and muscle with that?, Ive been doing overhead press reps of 5 more often. thoughts? love your videos man.
@Crockett Right on man! If you already have motivation a home set-up is awesome. If you want to do some extra sets at an odd hour no membership card or drive to the gym is required. It's also fun to be able to scream profanities while lifting and not have someone ask you to leave lol.
Years ago I started purchasing a piece of equipment every year on my birthday and I've had my own home gym with everything I need probably two decades now... I never go into a public facility where everybody else is cooties are... I stay at home and kill it in my garage...
John what if I have a barbell and weights and bands and I have a pull-up and dip station. Basically a home gym. Can I still eat at a deficit because my training hasn’t drastically changed?
I absolutely agree..always have a fitness backup plan. I know sharing this tidbit may not matter to the guys. But being a woman upkeep can be costly. Told my husband..Ill start doing my own manicure and pedicure last year. Save loads of money. Purchase everything last year fitness weighted plates, Olympic bar..dumbells bands. Feels good to have weights extra padding for my weighted jumprope. This shouldn't stop anyone using innovative ways to train. Now the price gouging on weighted plates is ridiculous...🤦♀️ Stay healthy & fit everyone!
I've been buying my two weeks of eggs chicken brocolli oats at the store for years and now everyone is looking at me like I'm the A hole panick buying.
You touched on mental health, that’s a big one for me and my gym work, almost as important as my physical development for me. Alexander is still on his A game!🏋🏻♂️💪🏼
Great advice John. I would suggest that you can certainly do high intensity with calisthenics. For instance, decide on how many reps per set on pull ups. 1. Perform till you fail to hit target reps, rest then 2. start rest-pause myoreps. When you fail at that 3. do an isometric hold mid ROM until you can't sustain it. 4. Then if youre crazy enough, jump up and slowly do controlled eccentrics. Stop when you can't control the descent. You can do the same with dips, triangle push ups, tiger push ups. Years ago I developed a nice back from doing the above with pullups, working at home withOUT any external weight or machines. Of course, I didn't always work out that way in every session, but normally escalated intensities slowly either as the meso developed or and sometimes assigned different protocols to different days of the week, and if I were to do the entire series in a row id do it on a Friday and rest the entire weekend before starting the microcycle again. A lot of people can't do many reps on bodyweight pull ups and dips to perform standard 4-2 RIR sets. Far away from failure clusters, I think is the perfect protocol for this case, even if it means doing 1-3 reps per cluster, until strength increases, allowing performance of standard sets. Others who can do lots of reps with bodyweight might do best with a relatively slow and controlled set to failure, then jump into myoreps. There's lots of ways to accommodate beginners to advanced lifters who come to calisthenics.
I've been training 10 years, natural. I got my home gym set up a couple of years ago, and added some bands recently. I've been using just bands for about 6 weeks now and I'm loving it, I've definitely made some progress using your band workouts

Great videos. Been a subscriber for a while, and its refreshing to see someone during this crisis doing videos for the common folk with no gym equipment at home (besides bands). I see so many other videos on UA-cam where similar advice is offered but they have a whole gym setup in the background and its just not the same.
I think it regulates my testosterone levels. In my early 50s a daily schedule seems to be the best way to stay happy and positive. I never feel better than when I'm pumped up. My wife has been coming with me fairly regularly this year and it's so nice because we get to spend time together when I'm really happy. It gives me a good outlook for the future. Or all I see is old age and turning to crap. So thank you for your support during this time for all the guys that are really hard hit by this (and we know who we are, natural or not). It's scary. Oh the classes on bands are really useful. I was freaking out about my legs. But I'm just gonna Chase the pump. Keep positive John I know it's hell for you too.
Thanks for all the valuable knowledge John. Your videos have a def place on YT in the fitness realm. Also thanks for having our backs out here in these crazy strange times. While we're all in a crappy spot right now, it's good to see Mr Meadows still taking the time every day to help us through it. Some people pray and listen to their preacher. I lift weights and listen to John Meadows. Thanks for being there for us. P.S. salt n vinegar chips kick ***.
Just found your channel. Thanks for your down to Earth optimism. I think there are many frustrated people out there who needed to hear this. Not all is lost. There are also ways to do weighted pushups, chinups/pullups and dips using a weighted vest (if you have one) or even a backpack loaded with books you don't intend to read. I've been adjusting to doing alternate seated dumbbell curls using a couple of 25 lb weight plates. I focus on higher volume and really on form/time under tension. It was a pain in the butt getting use to the new grip instead of a dumbbell handle but it is the same move. Next I'll likely start doing some lunges using those weights and I'll keep running outside for cardio. For those without a gym we just have to adapt and make the best of it until this craziness blows over.
I have never been more happy for my old home gym in my garage, its finally getting the love it deserves these days while my normal gym is closed ☺️ Thanks for all your tips John.
Great advice, been taking in morning country walks with the birds chirping and the river flowing past, so good for mental health, kettlebells and band work in the evening.

I'm not sure if you know how many lives you impact day to day but it's a lot. I hope you and your family stay happy and healthy through these crazy times, thanks for everything! 🙏🇺🇸
Great post, maybe your best. As a former competitive bb, but still have always trained with the go heavy or go home mentality, these are difficult times. I for years had a home gym, Olympic weights, etc. I got rid of these sometime back, never anticipated closure of all gyms. I am finding that to match any semblance of my gym workout, frequency is the only alternative. Bands can be great, but do have a limited range of motion, as well as most of the load is at the top or bottom end only. Calories, preached this for years, I always ate pretty much what I wanted, focusing on protein first and foremost. But as I always told everyone close to me, I could not maintain that type of diet if I wasn't training heavy like i do. Nice, nice, post.
John you really are the GOAT when it comes to sharing your knowledge and tips for all the fitness/lifting community. Thank you for spreading all that positivity and opportunities! Pretty grateful to be able to watch and learn in this tough times. Stay safe!

Thank you so much John for your positivity and excellent content. I trust your opinion on all things nutritional and training. Since my gym closed just this week, I’ve decided to keep training however I can. I don’t have any weights here at the house but have been utilizing Jeff Cavalieres body weight only workouts and they are brutal lol. I don't know about enhanced guys but for the natty lifter the key is going to be staying active. Mitigate the damage know, you'll make those gains once the gyms reopen. It's also a good time to focus on acing your dietary goals
I am fortunate that when I first started working out I started at home. I spent a good amount on weights and it wasn’t until I progressed I moved into the gym. Me being self conscious has actually helped out for once in my life! Who’d have thought that’d happen 🤣
Thx for the great video!! Immediately afterwards i went to the local track. I then came back home & used a couple of dumbbells to do push ups which i super set with squats & shrugs.Thx for the motivation!!! I was suffering from Cabin Fever!!!!
Thanks John! I can tell you really care about us all. We do work so hard on our goals and this really crushed me when the gym closed. I know it’s for the best. I’m cutting really hard right now and I will heed all the advice. One of the best things you showed me was how to focus on NEAT. I play with my dog a lot and this helps keep my NEAT up. I’m always conscious of this so that I’m not gonna gain weight while training is different now. Hopefully the bands and some dumbbells will allow me to keep my gains. I hope!!
Excellent advice John, thank you for the motivation. We're in our first 3-week lockdown here in South Africa. Hurriedly snapped up barbell & dumb-bell adjustables from a store yesterday, got bands, got front-yard pull-up & dips bar... should I be complaining? Hell no! Again, thanks for the bread and butter advice!
Thanks John, appreciate your words of wisdom and experience. I'm fortunate enough to have an amazing gym/trainer (in normal times) however I still reference your channel constantly for inspiration and motivation. Cheers from South Australia.
I feel like you were speaking directly to me when the video started, I bulked up 20 pounds then boom the gym closed right when I started my cut, I'm on the frontline checking covid 19 patient's hearts in a hospital so I still work, Definitely staying hydrated but I've been using my PTO to stay home all I can so I sleep right through my big breakfast till about 2pm compared to 4am, Hard to keep up with my calories sometimes but the sleep is amazing. I love bands brother, Got a good setup from when I was recovering from Tennis Elbow. I built muscle with them too without the negative weight that caused pain, Its a good rehab for anyone's joints until the gym's open up again, I would love adjustable dumbells though. Sorry for the paragraph & Thanks for the helpful tips!
Superb information once again, Mr Meadows. You are my new guru! Wish you'd been around when I started lifting in 1988 haha. Stay safe brother. Paul (Lanashire, England).
Thanks for posting this valuable content. I always learn new things from your vids. This quarantine could last for a long time. I’ve always trained in my home gym (20+ years). Start with an Olympic barbell and plates. You can do a lot with just that. Then get a Bench and a chinning bar, then squat stands or a Trap bar. I train at any hour I need to. Just did heavy squats in my basement. It’s a great lifelong investment.
Thanks for keeping the videos going John. Helps keep the Dumbell Dads like me motivated and staying positive. You truly have been a great help in my own personal quest for self improvement. Great advice John. I would suggest that you can certainly do high intensity with calisthenics.
For instance, decide on how many reps per set on pull ups.
1. Perform till you fail to hit target reps, rest then
2. start rest-pause myoreps. When you fail at that
3. do an isometric hold mid ROM until you can't sustain it.

My number one tip to clients asking how to maintain during the quarantine has just been: train harder at home than you were at the gym.
If you are active at home and doing resistance taken in your protein etc you should be ok.

he's def getting better!
Big shouts from Chicago Illinois appreciate the content 💪🏾
Thank you John!! The entire fraternity could benefit with your positive thoughts.. stay safe, fit and blessed!!
I don't know about enhanced guys but for the natty lifter the key is going to be staying active. Mitigate the damage know, you'll make those gains once the gyms reopen. It's also a good time to focus on acing your dietary goals
You literally go everywhere in UA-cam bragging about being natty , bruhhh
Thank goodness I have weights at home. Bands are underrated, pushing beyond the limits is what it's all about!
Eres la mejor página de todo UA-cam
I don’t think I’ve ever seen negatively on this channel. Deservingly so!
Your last point of advice really stuck out John! I haven't had any rest since last summer now that I think of it.
John your videos are just amazing. So informative and straight to the point. Thx for keeping the lockdown interesting.
barbell, band, bench w/ legcurl/extension, hip thrust, deads etc
ready to rock and ROLL!
Home gyms rock they can’t stop me 😁💪🏼
Production value is great in this one John! Those couch shots got me.
Super sick Alexander good job
Thanks for the video! Hope everyone is staying safe! take care everyone!
John you are the Best. This video helps me to keep my head high during these difficult Times
Thanks for keeping the videos going John. Helps keep the Dumbell Dads like me motivated and staying positive. You truly have been a great help in my own personal quest for self improvement. And may I say I am VERY impressed with Alexander's yo-yo and Rubik's cube demonstrations. What a bright young man!
Awesome video, lots of great information and I personally love the yo-yo tricks✌️
Stay active, eat and sleep well and check the scale. Alexander is amazing with his yoyo skills.

Hi John, thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and knowledge! Hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy during these unusual times!
If you can't train with weights go buy some resistance bands. Evan Walmart sells them. 💪🏾.
NO EXCUSES !.
Really what Walmart you going to? I’m in NY just north of the city they don’t even have yoga mats in mine! I ordered 500 worth of dumbbellsFrom them though online. That Didn’t buy many weights.
Most stores are out of everything online too. I actually had some resistance bands but cant find them.
Get some galloons in your house fill it with water, lift some furniture,NO EXCUSE!
@@michaelandrewdemaguil716 right on I'm using 12 packs of soda, a big bag of dog food, 5 gallon water jug, and furniture around the house with my own body weight. Making do with what I got!
@@Texas_Cruiser Yeah I'm benching my couch lmao
