mountaindog1 hey john, great video!! Can you do a video for roughly 3 individual body types and how you would tailor calories and if one cheat meal a week can be integrated? I don’t believe I’ve seen as many nutrition and eating videos that would be really helpful. I believed you mentioned always having a Saturday donuts cheat meal, even when getting ready for a show? Does this slow down your cut that much? Can you please help with some basics on how many carbs a person needs to recover without getting out of hand. I know we all are different so it’s tough. Thanks though!!
Thank you so much man I made so many of these mistakes and genuinely learned from this video please make a whole series out of this it’s very informative you earned a sub from me
Every couple of weeks or so I come back to his videos and drop a comment or a reply in the hopes that the YT algoritm will keep popping his vids on other peoples feed and his family will continue to benefit from the tremendous ground work this man has put in. RIP John
I only found this guy recently, so it's all new to me. I don't generally write 'meaningful' things online, but each video makes me feel very grateful and sad.
A brief summary of common exercises: 1. Lat pulldowns: Not arching your back when fatigue occurs, shifts tension to biceps. or using momentum way too much which shifts tension to the lower back. 2. Cable rows: Don't pull with your biceps, think about pulling your elbows back and squeezing your back. Again don't use momentum too much. 3. Dumbell rows: Don't twist your body, drive with your elbows is #1 key, don't turn it into a bicep exercise. 4. Barbell rows: Use straps if it's a heavy set. Don't jerk the bar, or use momentum to drive with your lower back. Keep the bar tight and close to your body, neutral back. 5. Deadlifts: Rather do rack pulls from mid-shin to target more upper back and lats, more like a shoulder extension movement for your back. Rack pull> dls for lat growth. 6. Dumbell pullover: Slight bend in your arms to lock-in position, pull with your lats and keep tension. Do not turn it into a tricep movement by bending too much elbow. Don't go too far when you come back so you don't shift tension away from your back. Form is all for basic movements. 7. Hyperextension machine: Don't set the machine too high, set it around your hips. Don't extend too much into hyperextension since it's gonna be dangerous for your lower back. Conclusion: #1 Drive with elbows rather than arms. #2 Don't jerk the weight, control it with proper form. #3 keep tension on your lats by issuing a proper range of motion. your welcome #Let the gains begin
@@mountaindog1 Wow my pleasure, Thank you! Although I'm a powerlifter I still watch your videos. However, I feel like Cable/dumbbell pullovers are unique in a way they train straight arm scapular retraction, that's why its always a stable exercise for my back. With that being said, I do think deadlifts did the same thing in a certain way by mimicking the same muscle contraction when you keep your lats tight and initiate the movement. But I guess its personal preference and you gotta chose toe most effective exercise for yourself as a bodybuilder. Keep the great work man!
Pullups. Heavy weighted pullups for 9 or more sets. shoulder width grip palms forward. Only thing that ever worked for me. Pulldowns do litteraly nothing for most naturals no matter what you do. Took me 10 fing years to figue out how much brutal intense volume my back can handle before it starts to grow.

I subscribed to other channels and they spoke so highly of John when he passed that I searched for his channel and started watching his videos. Its amazing how much technology has acted as a catalyst for knowledge. Like seriously so much information out there right at our fingertips.... And good people like John take time to supply it. Thank you sir!
Driving back with the elbow is the most important thing I learned a couple of years back. Whenever I train new clients they obviously pull with their arm and biceps automatically so I fix that immediately. Thanks for the video John! You're killing it lately👊
Exactly, It's amazing how such a small change psychically can change so much, just trying to pull down with your elbows instead of with your wrists (if that makes sense) gives such a better contraction and makes the biceps less involved.
Such a consummate gentleman, it is hard to believe he is gone. You will never meet a more generous, ego-less, and kind soul anywhere. A true legend, a fighter all his life. Thank you John for helping me in 2022. I know you are up there chilling in heavens and looking at all the boys you are still training. Huge respect.
These tips never get old to be reminded off and will save anyone years of trial and error. The hand placement tip was excellent. You should do a whole video on dumbell and cable hand placement. As you illuded too in the video, both back and chest engagement can change dramtically just by sliding your hand up or down the handle. I would love to a video with your advice regarding the handle hand placement.
I realised watching you that i do so many mistakes when i work my back.and i m in danger injuring my spine so once again John thank you!!! Most usefull this video!
The one thing I've been doing before every single workout is 2-3 sets of wide grip pullups for over a year now. I started at 8 and my max isnow 16, but usually go to 13. It's definitely helped my back grow.
the only thing that’s ever given me true passion is going to the gym and working on my mental/physical health. we are so blessed to have information on the internet to feed that passion and learn more everyday
Thanks for all the great advice. At 72 years old and not having worked out for 20 years... I use to power lift. I'm trying to get some muscle back by training with my equipment at home. After 1 month training I feel much better. The pain I feel now is from working muscles rather then inactivity. It's a better kind of pain. I set a goal to workout from March 1st 2021- to March 1st of 2022. Hopefully I look and feel much better🏋️. Thanks again John for your advice and support. Mark
Pull ups have helped my back grow so much. Single dumbbell row helps a lot too. This guy knows what he is talking about. Always start off light, do your thing and don't worry about others.
i incorporated these tips and felt an immediate difference. I had to lower the weight a little but i felt it. great stuff. I kept elbows in mind the entire time. great stuff! thank you!
EVERYTHING you said about the dumbbell row EVERYONE says to do.. And for the longest time I had avoided the row cause I couldn't do their forms correctly.. It hurt to do the jerk-twist motion and I felt it HUGELY isolated to my bicep and barely anything in my lat. So now with these new tips I'm going to happily include the row into my workout routine! Can't wait to try it out now.
Compared to the other UA-cam fitness dudes I follow I find myself more focused on your instructions. Your a man of great wisdom lol *SUBSCRIBED. Thanks my man! I’m gonna try all these new tips today.
If i may add one additional advice, use a thumbless / suicide grip, especially in lat pulldowns, will take away the some of the tension on the biceps and isolate the lats a little bit more
Thank you for all your wisdom, John. You were a true badass and well of knowledge and your tips have helped me tremendously. You will be missed. RIP LEGEND
John started to pop back up on my feed and my algorithms, but this reminded me of the older days, I remember when I was about 17 watching these videos and I’ll be honest from watching him in the past and learning the true true passion not just the life style not just the grind but the true feeling of hating an off day and understanding why you have to take it. It has paid off so much learning the true work ethic and true science with mixed experience and help from John. Even till this day I still do meadow rows. I have gotten so much stronger so much better and get compliments from the older generation who appreciate the art and not the fab or the ego of perhaps not all but the newer generation of working out. Big love to you John miss you 💪🏽🔥. Thank you for all your help and continues help. And remember y’all even if you’re watching this and think that you’re perfect on everything, and have a big back there is still much to learn, change and adapt then change again. Even if you pull push and squat at your most there is always something to grind and drive for. Hope all of y’all have an amazing lift and many more! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

HomesliceDrummer so how come my brother and I can eat the same exacts foods and portions and he looks drastically different than me. How come he can eat less than me and grow more than me? And he is, i actually eat significantly more calories than him and I taught him how to workout.

Back and biceps for me tonight with deadlifts. It's my 17th birthday so I got a lifting belt - can't wait to try it out! Once again John, amazing video!
John, when I first watched you on one of Juji’s videos, I thought you were a stern, cold-hearted, silent asshole... but the more of your videos I’ve watched, you are actually a very well-educated, kind and articulated man! Props to you, and God Bless.
Very important fine tuning for proper form here. Appreciate it, already making a difference in this past month. I've made a lot of these mistakes, mostly going too heavy and engaging the wrong muscles. I've also started really paying more attention to core and lower back training and that really helped maintain form/endurance on lifts like barbell row, pull-ups.
Appart from legs, rear delts and biceps,I allways look up at a point on the ceiling during a set,it pushes your chest out and works for me on nearly every exercise.Simplest bit of advice I was ever given......
I really wish John could have been my trainer. I've been lifting on and off for years and only seriously stuck to training this past 6 months. I'm binge watching as many videos as I can before my next session as I believe his knowledge is second to none. He lacks the ego hype a lot of youtubers present and just tells you exactly what to do and how to do it. It feels like he really wants you to improve and doesn't care about clicks. You can tell he shares his knowledge because he loves lifting and wants us all to enjoy it also. I'm so sorry his family and the world lost him.
RIP... your name was a staple growing up... always loved your demeanor and easy talk. Still not the same without you after seeing you around the web... my first time on T-Nation early 2000s...
Thanks man you helped me a lot because i have been training for four months without real real progress and i never felt the muscles work while training my back but with your tips i actually started to feel them and i hope in a month i’ll see more muscle growth than what grew in my 4 months shitty form training. Thanks a lot, you’re the best!!

Thank you for all your help Mr. Meadows. Your videos and teachings have helped me reach another level in my PR's. More importantly I've done it safely and without injury.
John I just wanted to tell you this was eye opening for me. I watched it the other day when you posted and then utilized it this morning during back day. I lightened the weight up a tad and focused on mind to muscle contraction. I am sitting at my desk this morning and I am feeling the pump still in the back. Thanks for all you do big dog!!!
looked for advice on how to grow my back and this is the first video i came across, didn’t know of your passing John RIP and thank you for the video. God bless everyone.
Agree 100% about not rounding your back. I have an injury from my job because of that - one of my rib heads started pulling away from my spine 😵 It's getting better thanks to my chiropractor.

There’s a compliment somewhere in there
T Alakiu-Marquis yea but not for you, move on bitch!
Fantastic video
Very important fine tuning for proper form here. Appreciate it, already making a difference in this past month. I've made a lot of these mistakes, mostly going too heavy and engaging the wrong muscles. I've also started really paying more attention to core and lower back training and that really helped maintain form/endurance on lifts like barbell row, pull-ups.
Gone, but thanks to these timeless videos, never forgotten. Thanks to whoever is keeping this channel going. Respect and condolences to his family.
I know nassar was the professor, John will have to be the dean, i like how detailed you are
man I love this guy. I learn so much
I have been doing every back workout about 20% wrong.. thanks John ❤ hope you're good up there
Appart from legs, rear delts and biceps,I allways look up at a point on the ceiling during a set,it pushes your chest out and works for me on nearly every exercise.Simplest bit of advice I was ever given......
i find the best thing for growing my back is just lowering the weight alot and just keeping my eyes out for the form
I'm so sorry his family and the world lost him.
dude samee! Every morning 6am gotta start my day with a John Meadows video.
These tips are pure gold. I swear I always turn pullovers into tricep excercises, specially when fatigue kicks in.
Good stuff!
Thank you . I was doing my cable rows wrong . So much to learn . John is definitely the best teacher I have struck .
Good on you John,
I have been training for 20 years now at 36 years of age and even i still learn a thing or 2 from you so again cheers sir 👍
RIP... your name was a staple growing up... always loved your demeanor and easy talk.
This man is a Legend. Ive just got into using gyms, now that i don't do much outdoor work. These videos have helped me so much.
And to find out he had passed, is sad because i would have loved to have sent him a message to say thank you for the amazing content.
Thank you for all your help Mr. Meadows. Your videos and teachings have helped me reach another level in my PR's. More importantly I've done it safely and without injury.
awesome!
I watch videos like this all the time and this is by far one of the most helpful I’ve ever seen
I am a weightlifter but back hypertrophic sessions are important for my sport so this is really useful! Thank you!
Agree 100% about not rounding your back. I have an injury from my job because of that - one of my rib heads started pulling away from my spine 😵
It's getting better thanks to my chiropractor.
Very gifted communicator. Great ability to communicate things in direct and easy way to understand and apply. Great job
MIKE GONZALEZ he seems like a really good trainer
Legend. Thank you Johnny
This man is a thorough teacher.
These are the most simple videos, so simply explained but i learn the most practical things from these videos.
