- With the newly installed Woodland Mills Sawmill Power Head fully functional and ready to go, I'm dropping a red pine and hauling it up onto my sawmill to try out this new accessory. One thing is for certain, I'm not getting any younger and although I wouldn't rather do anything other than cut lumber for hours on end, the fatigue can set in after raising and lowering the saw head using the crank handle. My hope is that this 12v electric sawmill power head accessory will help keep me rested and eliminate one of the less-than-fun tasks of raising the saw head so that I can keep sawing and make more lumber with less effort. I'm liking how this accessory uses my existing 12v battery to power it. Today will test whether the functionality of this accessory is up to the task of sawing or whether it's best left to the old hand crank. Glad you're all here to see how this goes. Here we go!

A few years back I had a woodmizer LT 40 hydraulic mill it had all the power up and down and even pulled the head through log. So I for sure understand how everything you add makes a big difference when you saw a lot. This new power head of yours will definitely make your life easier whatever it cost is just the price and you can't take it with you. Great video Sandy

Sandy thank for your info. Its really what I need for my hm130. But I may wait just a bit to see how they hold up. That button is going to get pushed a lot. I see that being the first thing to have trouble. But I very well may be wrong. Please keep us posted on any issues you may have and things you like about it.

So between your laser set ups and the new electric up down function, I'd say your life has gotten a lot easier. Today I cut wood with my son and we got 17 pieces of 1x10x12 and 3 -1x8x12 from one pine log. All I told my son was this guy named Sandy in Canada has got his saw dialed in very well. Hey Sandy! I just bought an HM122 with the Bushlander Trailer for "the channel" pretty pumped. Now you got me looking at upgrades and I just bought it yesterday! Power head and Laser look like pretty "needed" upgrades (that's what I'll tell my wife anyways)!

Great Video... After purchasing my manual mill (different make). It took me less then 2 months before ordering and installing the power head.. It was a game changer. Since then I've added a complete hydraulic package and am designing my own computer set-works (Ardunio or PI Pico for the geeks out there) Take your time , evaluate your process and take steps to remove steps. (Little things add up and make the day more enjoyable) .. Electric Start, Dual Lasers, Log deck, Power Head, you're well on you way..

Looks like you enjoyed the new toy but like you said for cutting all day it is definitely better than the crank it also seems faster than the crank by the way Sandy I cut my first log yesterday since my pneumonia it was a small log 9 inches diameter 12 feet long but it took me a good part of the day I am still weak but getting better and doing things have a great day

Great upgrade to the sawmill. The next thing Woodland Mills will have to create a set works computer so that the saw can be positioned to the next cut with just the press of a button.

For me it’s too slow but I saw and sell lumber, if I was sawing as a hobby just for myself yes a good piece of equipment to add to the mill. Woodlands has really nice accessories for sure.

Sandy I have the exact same sawmill you have. Actually you were the one who inspired me to get the HM 130 Max and I love it. At no point is almost $1,000 worth the powerhead. They have lost their minds. That's a $200 part and they're charging almost $1,000. You can build one for under 200 bucks with higher quality parts.

Sure seems like a handy contraption. I'm with the folks that said $500 would have been a better price point. Not doubting the quality, Woodland puts out a good product. For now, I'll slap a little extra CBD cream on the ol elbows and keep hand cranking. Plus Santa came early this year and got me the sharpener and tooth setter on Friday! Might put me on the naught list if I ask for the power head 🎅 I'm happy for you Sandy, it seems like a good edition to the mill! ✌
Congrats on the sharpener/setter. You'll be a one-stop operation now. Always nice to be able to get your own blades back working without having to ship them out somewhere.

I called woodland mills to clarify..... this will work on my HM126 so long as I provide 12V and a way to charge that 12v battery. I might add this one to my mill.

I have some suggestions for you.
Now that you have a powered saw head, stop clearing boards one at a time. Make your pass, raise the mill head, reset, and lower. Rinse and repeat. It looks like you have a 6-8 inch throat. That's a lot of boards before you clear. When you clear, carry as many as you can to reduce the trips stacking lumber. The powered head makes it easy to do this.
Once you take off your 3rd scab, just keep cutting through the log. Your 4th scab will be on the bottom when you are done. Why move the cant a 4th time? Time management is the key to milling effectively. Reducing all unnecessary motions will save you energy.
Great question. I end up having to drop the log stops down to cut the last piece of lumber and with the scab on the bottom against the sawmill bunks it wouldn’t give me enough support on the log. I also find since I’m only walking about 10feet with the cut lumber it’s fastest for me to take off the lumber one at a time as the slow up and down speed of the sawhead makes it take longer to raise up and over multiple pieces of lumber
Love the power head. Now if wood mixer would just come out with that I would be set. However I do have power feed and that is really nice too.

The power head will definitely save arm an shoulder. When I cut 1inch boards l lay them on the sawmill bunks, then take 3 at a time. Saves lots of fatigue an foot steps

Really enjoy your videos, thanks for your efforts in making them. Powered head looks exciting, but do you find it difficult to change the width of your lumber by just a "skosh"? Seems like the manual crank might be easier to change width by a tiny amount.
Hey Terry. Thanks for watching. I appreciate all your support. I find with just a light touch on the sawmill powerhead switch it can make small movements of like 1/16" or so which works out well for me. Just a bit of a learning. curve for the feel I'm seeing

Great question . I can’t talk for this sawmill battery since it’s new but for my other equipment I find the batteries stay charged just by using the equipment regularly

Hey Ken! They don’t make a power head unit for the other sawmills that I’m aware of. I’m happy with it so far with omit working well through. Looking forwarding to racking up the miles on it
If you were cutting let's say a 2x4, do you cut box store dimension or true 2x4 dimension? And do you add any extra to account for possible shrinkage?.
Great question Jason. I cut 1.5”x4” and don’t account for any shrinkage
Full 2 inch and std nails/screws get a little short
Sandy . . . by chance do you have any hardwoods, like oak, you could put through your mill to show us all how the 14hp motor handles hardwoods?
Unfortunately I don't have any hardwoods that are due to come down anytime soon. I've cut maple in the past and noticed that as long as the blade was sharp there wasn't any issue with the engine.

Hey Sandy. I appreciate your willingness to share your experience. Did you start with the HM122? Im really on the fence with which model to get. The portable version will work best for my situation.
Also did you find yourself needing the longer rail extensions? I don’t really see needing building materials that long for any structures you have built.
Hi Brian. I started with a 2017 hm130 without a trailer originally and bought the single track extension at the time I got the mill. I’d suggest a track extension for sure
Most of the time I cut 12 foot rafters or posts and so the extension is nice . Even shorter pieces can be tight on the regular length mill

I’m about to hit “pay” on the HM130max with the extension. I’m getting some spare blades and a kant hook. Anything else you would recommend to get started? Things that you find I will need that might save me a headache later? I was debating on the log winch as

I can see where this would save your shoulder. I still think a high and a low speed switch would be helpful. The price is a bit salty.

Technology has a way to make things much easier and better. Next is to order Musk's Robot. Probably be a future purchase but it's soon coming to a sawmill near you. It's a great time to sawmilling.

I am looking to buy the HM 126 Woodlander next year, live in Norway above the arctic circle.
My 2 cents: would be nice to have like a «dial» on this motor, that had like 1/8 inch (or whatever is best) that you could dial in, then when you press the button it went whatever you dialed in. (Plus the ability to dissble the dial)
That would be a great addition Rune. By the way I was in Norway a while ago and it was just a magical place
It would be nice if there would be a dial divided with marks for every 1/8" lets say and could be set to 0 at what ever laser point the first cut is made

It likely sagged down a bit. Zip tie should fix up the problem I’d imagine
I notice that you use the cable to tie directly to the tree, you should probably use your choker chain. the cable will last longer.

You're right about tying directly to the tree. Wallenstein calls for the cable to wrap around the first tree instead of using the choker on the first tree for some reason
I was thinking that perhaps you could get more into the “affiliate link” scene of every tool you use /recommend.

Did you have, or do you anticipate having any issues getting consistent cuts with the power head? Any tips on optimizing accuracy? Mine arrived today, and I plan to install it tomorrow morning. But advice from a more experienced sawyer is definitely appreciated.
I find it’s pretty accurate and repeatable so At this point I’m not thinking anything will come up. Keep me posted how you make out with the install.

I look at it like an electric start. Is it absolutely necessary? That's gonna depend on you and your workload. If you only cut a couple logs per week, maybe not worth it. Cutting all day, it quickly proves and pays for itself

over priced it imo. had they priced it $500.00 i might buy. by the way the first laser beam was junk and you never told us about it. thing shot down maybe 6-8 feet at best. thing gets broke anyway in time when you load or take off long log. i dont lick boots i tell it like it is, at least how i see it. That first laser was pure waste of money.
