chinese hotpot has 2 origins. southern chinese hotpot originated from chongqing area. it comes with spicy broth full of pig organs. in ancient time, there were lots of barge haulers and hard labors walking up and down on shores and hills in chongqing. spicy hotpots full of pig organs were a cheap source of protein for hard labors. northern chinese hotpot originated from arguably mongol troops. it comes with a pot of boiled water and salt. then you dip freshly sliced lamb meat into boiled water for a few seconds. then you eat it with some chive sauce.
Chongqing, China, you are super beautiful !!! Love you and l look forward to travel there one day. A big shout-out to Gaowei for introducing you both to mala hotpot. Yeah, blood from dosmetic animals (chicken, ducks, pigs) are edible and soft/tender when cooked. FYI, it shouldn't be cooked for too long. Steve, your chopsticks skill is marvellous....you are a pro, man. Well done, Steve ! Great that you both enjoyed the meal and have no stomach problem. A wonderful experience not to be forgotten. Thank you, Steve, lvana and iChongqing for sharing this gorgeous content.
Watching Steve trying new thing really cracks me up, you are a true warrior and thank you for having an open mind, I know it is not easy, it takes some real courage.

I am Chinese and I often use Tim Hortons as sort of mobile office with coffee and bagels, I wouldn't go that far as to say it a pride of China, but it is a decent alternative to Starbucks and Costa if you want to find a cafe to sit in. If you want your coffee to go, then Luckin is less pricey.

Happy to see this series, it’s so enjoyable to see different side from your eyes. Just one little correction, Chinese people usually familiar with every single province and directly governed city including Chongqing,Tianjin, Shanghai,Shenzhen. So it’s always a popular travel destination for domestic tourists not only 5 years ago. Keep on going, hope you have a great time in other places.😊
As an eastern Chinese i can only have hot pot in light soup or tomato soup😂cuz i only accept a bit spicy flavor from the dipping, btw you should try some different soup type next time like tomato or mushroom and herbs, much milder tastes and gives those food a quite different flavor
Steve almost got a heart attack when knowing he gonna have duck blood🩸had me laugh so hard! 😂😂 According to The Chinese concept, duck blood has "cooling" effect, it helps to discharge the rubbish from your body. Good try 👍👍
For Chinese new year, maybe can visit a city called Xi'an. If the name is not familiar, this is where to terracotas are located. And it was the center for Chinese civilization for many dynasties. You guys are so cute to watch ^^ But, I must say, I'm always shocked that ppl from Toronto live with such a huge Chinese community, but never tried mala tang hotpot😅 It's like Chinese food central
Actually for Chinese ppl have hotpot they are having the hotpot oil flavor with the texture of the food they cook. The tastes are the savory broth ingredients together with spices and chili in the oil, combine with the texture of the food. So like beef stomach, duck intestines and blood have little flavor themselves, the crispy/tender texture with the hot pot style are prefect combination. That's why Gaowei says that the shop owner wanna buy the freshest food from the market than frozen ones, since the fresher the better texture and less stale odor food would be.
Other parts of Europe also use animal blood in their cuisine, like in sausages, black pudding. I’ve also seen coagulated animal fat? Made into a cold dish? If I remember correctly I think that’s what it was.
Hi Ivana and Steve. Enjoy your videos in China very much. Would you please share the names of the places where you guys are? This place looks awesome. And also the temperature/dates so that we have an idea how cold it is in January(i guess). We will keep track. Thank you very much.
normal ingredients of hotpots are (various type or cut of) beef, chicken, pork, various types of balls and dumplings, various seafood and veggies. the intestines and organs stuff are popular but not the most common.
many of the Starbucks shops are much better too. they have a special coffee bar with different methods of brewing the coffee, with specialty coffee that is much more expensive, and some shops are multi-storey.
You guys cook the beef tripe and duck intestines way too long that's why it tasted rubbery. 15 seconds maximum. The Chinese guy too busy eating his own food rather than help you to understand that. lol.
people from English speaking countries usually just eat boneless whole chunk of meat. its really just a mental problem to eat animal internal, many of them actually taste very good.
I have been watching the last few videos, started to wonder if Ivana is really Indonesian at all, probably left Indo when she was kid, lots of these hotpot foods are or were eaten in Indonesia as well, there are many parts of Indonesia. the Indonesians I know are so crazy about 🌶️ they ate everything with 🌶️ with with their rice.
If I was the tour guide I would definitely recommend you the best classic hotpot sauce. Especially for the spicier hotpots. The seasame sauce (sometimes peanut sauce) base with garlic, a little soy and any other toppings that you'd like such as chili oil, garlic chives, fermented tofu, green onions, etc. The nutty fatness of the sauce cuts down the spiciness while adding a richer savory flavor.
The stomach is quite unique. I've never liked it but it's not just an Asian thing. Lots of places eat it - its called Tripe in Europe and the first time I tried it was actually in Italy at a market in Florence. The blood as well - definitely not something I'd eat either 😅 but most countries eat blood of some kind. Black Pudding for example comes part of Traditional English Breakfast and is just congealed blood.
