It is pity that nobody natives are accompanying you guys around - because you guys haven’t tasted 1% of the Shanghai food. There’re plenty small local food stalls in the alleyways that serve cheap and authentic Shanghai cuisines or snacks. Being in China first time is hard for the foreigners to understand the vast variety of Chinese cuisines.

@@cloudzhang9533 I think the menu will be a challenge for the tourists who don’t know the language, specially translating some dishes in the Chinese name is scary 😂. For example hairy crabs (大闸蟹), beggar’s chick (叫花鸡), three yellow chicken (三黄鸡), chick duck blood soup (鸡鸭血汤), foot wrapping pancake (包脚布), Field Chick (田鸡)(aka frog 🐸!!!!!!) and Lion Head meatballs (狮子头) etc.
Btw anyone translates 童子鸡 for me - the worst I have seen is “Chicken not have sexual activity” or the best “virgin Chicken” 😂.

that camera on that cashier's computer is to scan your QR code for payment. That chicken you got at the end is actually a cold dish so it was supposed to be that temperature. The tingly sensation comes from oil infused with sichuan peppers. If you don't like that taste, perhaps avoid sichuan in a future trip. But do try the north of China, very different food, not too spicy, not too sweet.

I am Chinese and I can eat spicy food, but I too do not enjoy the "tingly, numbing" sensation that you get from Sichuan food. Basically, Mala, or 麻辣,is not for me. I like spicy, but the 麻 part literally means "numbing". Personally I want to taste all my food, so the last thing I want to do is to have my tongue and palate numbed before I enjoy my meal. That that's just me. If you travel around China, 麻辣 is super popular everywhere you go. So I can only assume that lots and lots of people love to have their tongue numbed while eating, haha.

    Hi Steve & Ivana,
I know both of you are seasoned travelers and very good at food vlogs. My opinion is that it'll be much better if you were to get a local food guide in Shanghai (or most of China at least for the first day or so as) it will enable you to understand the country better especially on the cultural aspects and also the way certain food must be eaten. It would have added extra quality ro the already impressive content you've been putting out.

I think their problem is they have no intention of learning even just the basic local language, it won't take long time to grab some words about price and numbers. Not just throw out English to everyone in NON anglo-saxon countries, although many young people can speak English in China. I am surprised that they are Canadians, they behaviour like rude old style of American tourists

    • @keighbee
      @keighbee 9 місяців тому +1

@@y.w.79 It's good to experience what people eat daily, and it's also good to understand how to eat it and why it's served in a certain way. For example how to eat soup dumplings, and why the chicken is not served hot, or "who comes to a basketball game to eat a piece of bread?". Having someone guide you through it instead of approaching it through a western perspective is incredibly useful and confidence building. If you're in Shanghai, you're missing out if you don't know where to get the food that represents the culture of the city. You can find generic almost anywhere.

If you are interested in learning about China's progress and history, please provide some travel advice:
If you want to explore 3,000 years of history, go to Xi'an.
If you want to explore 1,000 years of history, go to Beijing.
If you want to explore 100 years of China from colonization to modernization, you can go to Shanghai.
If you want to see a city plan built on a mountain with modern infrastructure. For the dream city built in 40 years, let's go to Chongqing.
If you want to see the future, go to Shenzhen.
This is a very rough and comprehensive statement. If we continue to add the different natural landscapes and biomes provided by China, the list will be endless, because China is very large, with too many beautiful places and many beautiful cities and natural landscapes.
What is the best of all this? No matter where you go in China, as long as it is where people live, you are absolutely safe! You are free to explore!
China is safe 24 hours a day, bars and various entertainment venues are open 24 hours a day, and restaurants are open 24 hours a day! Don't worry about being shot🇨🇳

At 39:50 at the beef noodle place, what you ate was "hong shao niu rou xiao mian" which literally translates to "red roasted beef small noodles". I think the small noodles actually refers to the noodles being thin noodles. As I was watching this street food video, I was actually doing my best to read the menu for you guys, because I can read chinese characters, but sometimes because you didn't get a good view of the menu, I wasn't able to make out what it was. I've been to Shanghai and Suzhou like over 20 years ago, and if the menu being all in chinese characters stumps you, with most of the people not being able to speak English, then can you imagine how it was more than 20 years ago? It seems to me like you had an easier time, because at least now I can see like that lady who stopped to help you order at the pork lunchbox place, she was able to speak English and help with some translation. Over 20 years ago, if I wasn't able to speak and read Mandarin, no one would have stopped to help me, because in China, it's really all in Mandarin., or what they call "pu tong hua" (literal translation: "ordinary language"). As a Singaporean, it was a culture shock to me, because in Singapore, we mix languages when we speak, so even if we're speaking in Mandarin, we mix in some English words and it's still understood here. But if I were to mix in English words when speaking Mandarin in China, they would look at me clueless and still not be able to understand what I'm trying to say.

legend goes that some nobles of the Russian enpire fled to Shanghai after the revolution and brought with them the traditional recipe of borscht. Yet due to the lack of beet root in China it was swapped for tomato for the red color. Also due to the hardship back then, large chunks of beef were replaced by Chinese sausages. Eventually end up in something that is completely different from the authentic borscht.

My Canadian buddy, it should be pronounced as “Worstershire”, just ignore the letter c and e, it’s a place’s name in England, British brought this sauce to Hong Kong (for cooked beef) century ago and mainland Chinese had modified the taste a bit to fit the local flavour. The original taste is sort of sour and a bit salty for steak, beef, or borscht soup.

Even though the claims are that it is created from Lea/Perrins of Worcester England. It is highly likely it originated from East Asia in reality. If you look at the facts of all over East Asia there are similar sauces that had been since antiquity, at least hundreds of years. If you look at the key ingredients and spices, they are primarily from Asia. If you look at process of making this sauce, it uses a fermentation process that is uniquely Asian in ancient times. It becomes evident if you think about the ingredients, the process and the areas where there are lots of sauces that have similar taste profiles and processes but have been there since antiquity. Then you have a one off in England and a the broad area, where nothing else comes close in processes and taste profiles. Another food for thought is Ketchup, this condiment likely came from the area of Guangdong China or somewhere in that vicinity.

man, it's the best neighborhood in Shanghai where you guys are visiting. Try the lamb skewer on the corner of ZheJiang Road and Guangdong Road.(called 新疆烤肉串). The best since 1980s, 2013 was the last time I went back, they were still there. Try it.

It’s Sichuan pepper corn that gives you the numbing tingling sensation, it’s not something from Shanghai, but a Sichuanese spicy from a place called Sichuan. It’s been popular all over China nowadays.

The numbing is the "ma" in "mala", where "la" is hot spicy. It's due to Sichuan peppercorn, which adds a floral taste and numbing sensation.

China today produces over 70% of the world's tomato paste so ketchup from anywhere is probably from Chinese tomatoes regardless if it's Heinz, French's, No Name or tomato sauces from Catelli's, Classico or Primo !

Chinese ketchup? Well, Ketchup actually originated from China. The name 'ketchup' is a dialect word from some part of China that I don't really know where.

At 32:19 at the pork lunchbox store, it wasn't a camera she wanted you to look into, that was a QR code scanner probably used to make payment via electronic means. In Chinese cities, most people don't pay by cash anymore. Everything is by electronic payment, so if you pay by cash, they can tell you aren't local. Even street buskers accept payment via electronic means, and hawkers do too. China has the benefit of not having a legacy of past means of payment, so it's like they went straight to adopting the latest means of electronic payment right away. And because they don't have a legacy of having a lot of petrol-fuelled cars like most of the world does, you can see a lot of electric vehicles there. 'Cos it's like most of the regular folks went straight from bicycles and scooters/motorcycles to driving electric cars and skipped on the whole petrol-fuelled car era. Also, you probably see a lot of local car brands that are unknown outside of China, because it's probably more affordable to drive a locally made car, instead of a foreign brand imported car, if those are even available in the country.
