I've watched tons of how-to and review videos over the past year as I began getting into filmmaking, and I just wanted to say that your video here might be the absolute best one in terms of being concise. You touched on so many of the questions I've asked and dilemmas I've faced, and you did it in such a clear and thorough way. Seriously, thank you for doing such a great job walking us through your particular path. Please keep em coming.
This has been a joy to listen to and watch. Not just because you know what you’re taking about, but the delivery is smooth without a bunch of yelling and jump cuts. Congrats on the rig as well!!!
I LOVE THIS SOOO MUCH I DAMN NEAR COULD CRY LOL seeing someone who looks like me, sounds like this, explaining everything CLEARY & Concisely, family thank you, being a black filmmaker in Cali this is a heaven sent fam, you’ve inspired and helped me so much.
Wow, so concise, well though-out, researched and clearly presented. With most UA-camr videos, I'm skipping through, searching for useful bits of information. But this video is so tightly packed with valuable insights and tips. I'm gonna have to watch it a couple more times… and take notes! Subscribed, liked, and even dinged the bell (which I almost never do). Thanks Erwin!
This is awesome and exactly what kinda information I was looking for - trials and errors, multi-use, lens IS effectiveness, etc. - Thanks for the great video!
Greetings from London, England. Thanks for sharing your rig set up and reasons why you chose the components. It’s really helpful and will stop newbies like me from buying the wrong thing. I recently purchased the BMPCC 6k and am trying to get the smallest most effective rig possible. I think the battery is the only real weak point of this camera system. I’ve opted for the battery plate that takes the Sony NPF batteries. The V-mount option seemed a little large but you’ve made it work. I look forward to your future content.
Also, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this already or not or if you already figured it out, but I got the Tilta Nucleus and Ronin S and the Nucleus can actually be programmed for the infinity lenses in a way that you can tell it when it needs to stop on each side of the focus range, eliminating the constant spinning on those lenses. This is an incredible little focus device and is absolutely perfect for the BMPCC4k rig on the Ronin S. You can also get the handle bars for the Ronin S and attach the wireless focus wheel to the handles near your hand, put a rubber band on the wood grain for extra grip and you can literally focus with your thumb as you are walking. It's amazing!
The issue isn’t really the constant spinning, the issue is that it’s focus by wire so the focus range changes based on how fast you spin the wheel. If you spin it quickly, it might go through the entire range in 1/4 turn. If you spin it slowly, it might take 2 complete rotations to go through the focus range. That makes focusing a pain because the focus amount is different everytime based on your speed
What a great video. Mr. Marionneaux, you covered an amazing amount of ground and I'm feeling a lot more comfortable with my 4K. Thank you for this outstanding presentation!
best video! one cool tip for me is using the black magic app to pull focus, you can add presets so it will automatically transition between subjects. you can set something for example 6 inches away and another 3 feet and it will automatically move to the perfect spot, even adjusting the time it takes to focus shift, from 0.5s to 7.5s. unfortunately I much prefer vintage manual lenses so I want to get the Tilta follow focus. for us filmmakers it's good to see someone actually cutting out the useless parts of a video! haha. So far I got: BMPCC4K, NP batteries, full cage with handle and SSD holder, T5 SSD, lenses, Lav mics, NTG3 and DJI Ronin S. Still 'need' to buy: follow focus, metabones adapter, matte box, rails, external motor, MORE LENSES, and probably like another $1,000,000 worth of equipment.
Top tip with the tilta mini Matt box which worked for me - use step up, step down rings on the adapter ring to bring the thread forward to attach the VND. I use the 72mm adapter ring with a 72/77 step up ring which I can then attach my 77mm VND to. I can also use the 67mm adapter with step ups to the same 77mm VND
Like the next day I solved this, you can use an extension ring or get a cheap uv filter and remove the glass to bring the thread forward. That way you can avoid step up and step down rings
Hello Erwin. I'm Baron Mak a filmmaker. Right now by far your video is the best one for the BMPCC 4k rig. I do have a few more questions and i am ready to purchase your set up. Do u have an problems with the Roni S? How long does the battery last with the gimbal?
Hands down, best video I've seen yet on rigging the BMPCC4k. LOVE how you included all of the things you tried that didn't work out well and then giving us your fixes for them. It's a lot of the same problems I've had and/or anticipated having with this gimbal. I have this camera and cage and I just ordered the Ronin S. What I am having a hard time with finding a good accurate answer for is the counter weights. Do you have to have 2 of the 3.5oz weights, or 3.5 mixed with a different one, or what is working the best for you? I am going to purchase this clamp and the weights, but I want to be sure I get everything I need the first time without buying something I don't need. Any advice would be appreciated.
I really appreciate that! I know everyone situation is different so I tried to be as clear about my own experience as possible. As far as the counter weights, one was enough to balance the camera without some of the extras like the mattebox and moving the follow focus on the right side of the camera instead of the left helped as well. BUT, just the 1 counter weight was right on the limit of being balanced. Any little change would mean the difference between it being balanced or it not. So I added a second weight. I wasn’t trying to find the “perfect” weight to balance it because like I said, if anything causes you to need a little more, you’re stuck. So I have 2 full sized weights which gives me flexibility to do whatever I need and not worry about if I have enough counterweights to balance it out
@@erwinmarionneaux Awesome. Thank you for the reply! That clearly tells me what I should probably buy, which will likely be at least 2 3.5oz weights and I'll go ahead and get another smaller one as well and play around with it. I am glad to know that it will still work with just one. Keep the awesome videos coming!
The gimbal footage is not very steady or cinematic looking. I know it has no post processing, but I get way better stablization from my Ronin-M and pocket 4k with no post. Are you sure its properly balanced?
You’re right! This video wasn’t necessarily about getting the smoothest looking footage so I could have put more effort into operating the gimbal. I was mainly focusing on the actual equipment used and needed to set things up.
LiquidMocoFilms LLC I appreciate it! I definitely should have put more time into that part but I will be posting work that’s focused on the actual footage itself soon!
What do you mean by how to mount it? It’s pretty much the same as any camera, the baseplate is on the bottom of the camera, slides right on the gimbal and balance just as you would any camera
Erwin Marionneaux I don’t have the counter weights for the ronin s and I’ve seen people mount it without it, even when I offset mine it’s still tilts to the left
Diana Davance you’ll most likely need the counterweight. One minor difference can change everything. If someone has it mounted without the counterweight then you’d have to run the EXACT same setup as them to match that. Any difference in lenses, batteries, screws or anything can change the balance points. With this camera I’d definitely recommend getting a counterweight because that way you don’t have to worry about the balance if you make any changes.
Man, big thanks for this! I had rented out the BMPCC6K and a Ronin-S for a weekend and I wished I had watched this because all my footage ended up super shaky! Picture coming out of the camera was 👌 though
I have a suggestion. Don't use a dummy battery but the 12 v input on the left side. That way you can have an lpe6 battery in there. This allows for v mount hotswap as it will use the lpe6 if there is no other power coming in
Yea I don’t use a dummy battery, I have it plugged directly into the 12v port with power coming from the gimbal or the v mount and the lpe6 battery is inside for a backup
Do you guys shoot handheld or with a gimbal? Or both like I do? Being able to switch between the 2 quickly has been a HUGE help. **this video is focused on the equipment and purpose of the equipment, I know more examples of what I discussed could have been shown as well as much smoother gimbal footage but given the situation with Ms.Corona Virus, things are a bit limited at the moment lol. Auto tuning the gimbal for the new setup and more purposeful walking would have provided better results. I’ll cover proper gimbal settings for this setup as well as the image stabilization flaws when using the Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 in more detail.
I do both. When I want to follow the artist in shooting through a field or wherever they are walking/running I use my gimbal. I also use my gimbal to move in and out from the artist to get some cool footage that looks like the camera is moving away. I shoot handled when I'm up close to the artist or when I want to shoot miscellaneous things like hang movement, and things like that.
Keith Acquaye same! Previously I haven’t been able to easily switch back and forth between the two so that’s something I wanted to correct with this setup
Another solution for your matte box and VND is to use a step down and step up ring. This will allow you enough space to still clamp onto the adapter and provide enough space to use your VND.
I am about to get TIlta matte box....and I thinking how to get the Vnd filters to work with it. Have you tried to screw the UV filter to Tilta adapter and than the VND? The UV will be acting as a spacer.....that is what I wanna try first before getting rod set up.....And no I am not gonna leave UV glass in.
Thanks! I use the matte box just as much on or off the gimbal, of course it’s more trouble to use on the gimbal but the setup I put together makes it easy
Love your setup! Have you had any issues powering both the monitor and the camera from a single v mount? I’ve heard horror stories about fried hdmi ports from that so just curious you’re experience! Thanks and love your content!
I have the same handheld rig, is this the best gimbal for this set up? The access lock sounds like a pain. Do you have to remove the monitor while in gimbal mode?
They serve 2 different purposes. The vnd cuts down on the amount of light so you can have a slower shutter speed. A matte box blocks light from entering the lens from a bad angle and causing unwanted glaring and stops the footage from getting washed out from it
Endure Films the flag isn’t always needed, very often, the thickness of the mattebox is enough because it decreases the angle the light can reach the lens by a good bit. I would say a good 30 degrees in all directions. Of course if it’s not enough then I can attach the flag with no problem as well.
@@erwinmarionneaux Questioned that too. Surely if you're using a matte box, use the right filters. I also used to use expensive V ND's but they are all the same; introduce colour cast due to a V ND just being two Polarizer filters together. Invest in a set of 4x65 IR ND's. You will never go back, they can be found on eBay quite cheap these days and will last a lifetime! Cheers, Thomas
@@filmbythomas The matte box is designed to work with screw in and slide in filters so it's not that I'm using the wrong filters, its just that the way the ones I use are designed, they don't quite fit into the adapter. Also, I have a set of Schneider slide in ND filters and from testing the polar pro and moment nd filters, I haven't experienced any color casts or sharpness loss when compared to the glass slide in filters. With other variable filters (even expensive ones), the issue has been present but thankfully the moment and polar pro variable filters have been excellent which is why I wanted to get a mattebox that allowed me to use them
The ronin sc only holds around 4lb and the bmpcc 4K is 1.5lb alone. So after adding counterweights and the lens and other accessories, it would really struggle. The new sc can hold more so you’d have a better chance with that one
How long can you use your Ronin S using stabilizer current for the camera too? I have heard the Ronin S battery drain very very fast, I discarded that option because I heard that several said that only one hour was enough using both
I would say about 2 hours, maybe 3 if your not doing anything too crazy. I’ve never had it die on a shoot but I’ve had it come close. It’s extremely easy to change the battery though since the grip just slides of with the knob and I can slide on a new one in like 10 seconds.
The biggest concern for me going for the bmpcc is the lack of stabilisation. What do you guys think because in my calculations I added a gimbal but my pockets aren't that big..
@@TazzSndhu why did I not watch that part of the video lmao 😂 it doesn't look bad handheld but he had alot of accessories which I wouldn't have and it's still got alot of gitters. I think i might go for a gh5 or g9 since I'm a beginner.
Provolt gh5 is outdated bro but really depend on what you need the camera for! I am too getting into music videos and is fresh chapter for me but i am trying to make as much as research i can as the investment has to be worth and for a long run! I have seen all sort of good or bad bmpcc videos but for some reason i can see the vision i want in my project thru this camera! Can’t afford a RED atm so the bmpcc 6k does sounds interesting to me! But end of the day IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMERA , if we talk about a quality project! Not just the equipment
@@TazzSndhu yea I really want the g9 because it's a good hybrid with decent video. I agree that the black magic will be a bett3long term investment but the g9 will be a cheaper investment for the time being and thrn if I get good and make money I'll upgrade in the future

With other variable filters (even expensive ones), the issue has been present but thankfully the moment and polar pro variable filters have been excellent which is why I wanted to get a mattebox that allowed me to use them
besides powering the camera with the ronin i know you can't do that with the Rs2
could you not use the same rod mount for both the matte box and follow focus?
No because the follow focus rod is on top the camera
I have ronin s and bmcc4k the gimbal make my image to wobble. I see it similarly on your video. Have you managed to fix it?
Yes, be sure to auto tune the gimbal before use to make sure the motor strength is set properly
Great Vid! So regarding the Tilta Nano Focus System, whats your solution for hitting focus every time(Video shoots)?
The reason why I sold my Sigma 18-35mm Great great sharp lens.but for filmmaking, a no go, I bought the Meike Cine(Tstops) Series
Hey Erwin, I have been having issues balancing my 4k on the Ronin S - I definitely need the counterweight - which one do you use/recommend?
so theres no chance the bmpcc4k can balance of a ronin SC right? Not even with a counterweigh?
The ronin sc only holds around 4lb and the bmpcc 4K is 1.5lb alone. So after adding counterweights and the lens and other accessories, it would really struggle. The new sc can hold more so you’d have a better chance with that one
How long can you use your Ronin S using stabilizer current for the camera too? I have heard the Ronin S battery drain very very fast, I discarded that option because I heard that several said that only one hour was enough using both
I would say about 2 hours, maybe 3 if your not doing anything too crazy. I’ve never had it die on a shoot but I’ve had it come close. It’s extremely easy to change the battery though since the grip just slides of with the knob and I can slide on a new one in like 10 seconds.
how are you powering the nano when handheld?
Thanks man! The nano is powered by a simple usb cable connected to the battery plate
Great video!
Dude, hit me up if you are ever in the Lake Charles Area!
The biggest concern for me going for the bmpcc is the lack of stabilisation. What do you guys think because in my calculations I added a gimbal but my pockets aren't that big..
i believe the lense he used was without IS
@@TazzSndhu why did I not watch that part of the video lmao 😂 it doesn't look bad handheld but he had alot of accessories which I wouldn't have and it's still got alot of gitters.
Provolt best wishes 🔥🙏🏻
