    A review with use for a year actually counts as a review! You confirmed my suspicion that BRAW is literally a game changer.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you picked up on that. I’m not a big fan of “reviews” based on someone using a camera for a week. If you’re gonna do a video on a camera you’ve used for a day or two, call it a “first impression” rather than a “review”, but I guess it’s semantics.
      The RED Komodo for example, I only had it for 3 days, shot with it 3 times. It wasn’t enough time for me to learn the camera and give my viewers an in-depth review. Let’s say I had the camera for a month and had used it on a handful of shoots, graded the footage each time, then yeah I’d be able to provide you guys with a solid review.
      And yes, BRAW is definitely a game changer. Love working with it.

    Great video, but a little wrong when it comes to battery life. If you compare the Pocket 4K to a Sony A7III, then yes, it's horrific. But this is a wrong comparison. The Pocket 4K is more in the league of a high end cinema camera like an Alexa or a RED. If you compare it to an Alexa or a Red, the battery life is fantastic. One normally gets about 30-45 minutes off a 90w v-mount battery on an Alexa, a 90w v-mount battery on the pocket 4K lasts all day. Cheers!

    The best thing about the Pocket vs say an FS7 is that even though it has less dynamic range you can recover more shooting RAW than the compressed internal Sony codec.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  4 роки тому +1

      I know this video is about the BMPCC but since you mentioned the FS7, I predict that when BM releases their next version of the Ursa Mini, it's going to be taking even more people away from FS7's, C300's etc., I love that Blackmagic has essentially found a market in-between the more expensive cinema cameras.

    I watched this video with interest and all of your comments are quite reasonable, except for the 'absolutely horrendous' battery life. The battery life of the BMPCC4K isn't 'horrendous' it's actually quite good given the nature of the camera and the very small 14Wh capacity of the battery. In contrast, the Panasonic S1, which has a 60% greater battery capacity, can only record 75 min of 1080p video and even less at 4K. I've also read where Sony A7 users get anywhere between 20-40min of recording from their cameras, that's not great and can they be powered externally? My BMPCC4K, as tested with a genuine Canon LP-E6N battery, can record 52min of continuous 4KDCI BRAW. I can record just about all day (seven hours) with just two NP-F970 batteries and the Canon battery. I don't mind if users say that the battery on its own isn't sufficient for their intended use and therefore requires external battery support, but the actual battery life isn't horrendous.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and thanks for your insight into the batteries. I've never gotten 50+ minutes of record time out of the Canon LP-E6 batteries. Maybe turning down screen brightness and recording at a certain resolution and bitrate could help maximize it but in my experience, I got 25-30 minutes on a Canon brand LP-E6.

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage 4 роки тому +1

      @@joenicklo I did have the screen brightness turned down low, as I use an external monitor, so I only needed enough brightness to see the menus. I also use the LP-E6N version, whether that makes any difference. The new battery for the Canon R5/R6 apparently offers slightly more power, so that may help as well.

    HFR is a slow-mo term meaning frame rates over 24P, while “off-speed” could mean a variety of frame rates above OR below 24P. The actual term “off-speed” came into being with lighting crews who used HMI lights with specific frame rate camera requirements that would avoid flicker in the lighting. When a cinematographer wanted to shoot “off-speed”, it meant the high-intensity discharge lighting could not be used. In those situations, we would revert to incandescent lighting to accommodate the frame rate the DP wanted to use. Safe frame rates for HMais were always a derivative of 24p; like 24, 48, 96, etc. 30p is included in this group because, all lighting, regardless of technology, is inherently flicker free below 30 frames per second.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the technical info Michael :) Why do they call it two differen't things on the BMPCC though? I'm curious.

    • @michaelwalsh3462
      @michaelwalsh3462 4 роки тому

      @@joenicklo I think the wisdom here is that, predominately, people want a quick route to the slo-mo functions of the camera, without negotiating the menu system (which can be time consuming). So BMD gave us a quick 60P button for those times when we wanted to go quickly to slo-mo, from 24P situations, and back again. Of course, they would know the complete reason, but I believe this was the objective. Typically, a "fast-mo" shooting scenario is not an impulsive one, therefore, one can afford to go into the menus to achieve these settings, without sacrificing on-set time for camera adjustments.

    The app costs $5 dollars now! I can't find it for free anywhere. Not a huge deal but a little bummer that they can give me $300 editing software but I can't control the camera via bluetooth for free lol. Also you should shoot at the lowest possible iso for low light on this camera and the highest possible iso for highlights (within a iso bracket). If you look at the DR chart 1250 and 200 iso will give you more shadow detail under middle grey and at iso 1000 you'll get more stops above middle grey for better highlight retention. 400 and 3200 is good for shots with both highlight and low light detail. If you shoot at 800 or 100 and expose accordingly and bring it back down in post you'll get more highlight information. I know it sounds weird but if you look at the chart or watch FilmakerIQ's video on dual native iso it makes sense. 400 is good for mild highlights and shadows.

    Great review! I've been considering the 4K version of this camera, and you've answered so many questions. But of course, I have a few:
    1. Do you think the camera could be mounted and balanced on the Ronin S with the Tilta cage?
    2. Do you know how the low light performance compare to the GH5S?
    3. Does the BT app focus pulling feature work with native MFT lenses? I have a bunch of Pany MFT lenses.
    Cheers!

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  4 роки тому +2

      Hey Dave, I'm glad the review helped. To answer your questions:
      1. Absolutely. You'll need the offset plate to mount it on the Ronin S with or without the cage. This is the one I use: geni.us/8Z2k5B Depending on which lens you use, you might need a counterweight.
      2. Low light performance isn't as good as the GH5S however the BMPCC4K is still pretty dang good in low light. Much much better than the GH5 is. Personally, I prefer filming on the BMPCC 4K over my GH5S in almost every situation.
      3. The Bluetooth+ App for iOS will pull focus on native MFT lenses. I believe the BM Cam Ctrl for Android works too.

    I'm a new owner of the Pocket Cinema 4k. Can you do a video for someone starting flat-footed? I'm trying to get used to RAW, but the dull image on the screen scares me. I need a workflow for shooting RAW correctly. I know there's some leeway in exposure but I don't want to get back to the edit room with something that is not the quality I expected. How does the false color help? How do I set up one of the programmable buttons for this? Finally, I have a popular lens on the camera but the button-focus doesn't work whereas it worked when this lens was on my GH4. Is there something I'm missing? Thank you. Your review was really great.

    Great video!!! I'm looking to get one of these. A year and a half after this video, do you think this is still a good bet as far as price to performance ratio. I know there is a 6k now, but it is significantly more expensive. Just wondering if anything else may have come out since this video in this price range that you've come across that may be comparable. I have done my research, but lets face it, sometimes that makes things more confusing...LOL. Thank you for your time and for the great video!! Subscribed.

    • @joenicklo
      @joenicklo  2 роки тому +1

      I'll be VERY honest with you here...I really don't think that there is a camera at this pricepoint that beats the Pocket 4K. Even right now.
      Yes, I'm a Z Cam user but I think that dollar for dollar, the Pocket 4K beats it out for the simple fact that the Z Cam E2-M4 needs some additional accessories to get up and going. If the Z Cam had a usable screen, better UI and a usable internal RAW codec, I'd go with it over the P4K.
      But, it doesn't. So Pocket 4K here. That being said, you also get Resolve Studio for free.
      Hope this helps!
