I'm 48 now. This takes me back to when I was 4 or 5. I remember crying in front of the tv watching and listening to this - like it was yesterday. That same little boy is still in there and now he has tears again. Bittersweet.
I first saw this film "Watership Down" in the Spring of 1979. This song "Bright Eyes" both touches and breaks my heart. It's beautiful and I love to hear it, but I always cry. The final scene is one of the most beautiful and poignant depictions of death I have ever seen in an animated feature.
I remember seeing the film back in 1979 when I was five years old, but this hauntingly beautiful song is what stays with me after all these years. It's hard to believe that Richard Adams, Watership Down's writer, reportedly hated this tune! The movie was recently on TV again here in New Zealand & every time I watch it, I understand it more & appreciate the message Richard was sending to those watching. It will remain one of my all-time favourite films & songs & no-one could've sung it better than the legendary Art Garfunkel. Pure magic! 🎶🐰🐇💞🎤💫
In 1979, I was also of only 5 years old. But only last year, I heard this for the first time. It seems, I came on this earth 2 days before you. What a nice meeting over here.
I just remembered this song from my childhood and I was born in the 90's but couldn't remember the words or the name, spent a good 30 min searching rabbit movie, eyes like fire😢
In recent years kind of makes me think of my son and I little hamster. He is such a dear little soul and affectionate. I will miss him when he passes, but I do strongly believe that animals both great and small and inbetween have souls too
There is something about this song that reaches into your soul and stirs up all the trauma and sadness inside. It makes me cry every time.. not just a little tear but sobbing!
Omg I feel that! I had forgotten about this song, but the recent episode of Black Mirror brought it back to my memory... as soon as I head I started balling...
Its a film about poor little rabbits, constantly under attack, and the decency of Simon and Garfunkel, creating a beautiful melodic song to highlight this, accompanying a relaxing film, but it obviously hasn't stopped human races ignorance, about the beauty of nature.
My eyes can't stop crying whenever this song plays, it reminds me of my beautiful 9 year old son who passed away 21 years ago and also my dear little kitten who was only few weeks from his birthday. Such a emotional moving song.
There's something so sad but yet so beautiful about this song. My 14 year old dog passed away yesterday and this song came to mind. Also I'm so sorry for your losses!
@@naomi5893 I really do understand the pain of losing a life that you sincerely love and take of to slip away from your hands. It truly is helplessness that will take a long time to get used to. I am very sorry for your loss of your beloved dog, rip.
2001. Made my young rowdy cousins watch this in Ireland. Three mental loud boys. Happiest moment of my life was to watch them just sit them mesmerised by this film. End of it, the eldest lad (15) started crying. Then he made some excuse to leave the room. Other two lads just sat there. One asked quietly “Is there a sequel?!” Job done.
I like to think that even today's overstimulated generation would appreciate an old classic like this with so much love put into the making of it...and a story that treats them with a respect and honesty they won't get from Pixar or Disney.
Black mirror brought me over here. I remember this song well. It’s a really nice song. I first saw the movie a month after losing our family cat just shy of its 12th birthday. Darn black widow bite. The movie became a favourite of mine as a kid. Loved the rawness and unsentimental view of th cycle of life, and it’s humour. It still holds up. The book is the real deal. Shoutout by the way to Malcolm Williamson for the amazing prelude music and opening theme. Would’ve loved to have heard what he would’ve done but Angela Morley did a banger of a job when she took over🎖
Seeing my mum and dad now compared to what they looked and physically were like 20 years ago.. "How can a light that burned so brightly, suddenly burn so pale?" 😢 Breaks my heart. Dad's no more, mum's not very well, i sometimes wish my good health went to them so that they could live again and experience life again just like when they were at their brightest! 😢😢
Yes that is very sad. Sorry about your dad. I still have my parents but they are elderly now and looking more frial. My dad was a really tough guy once
Best opening scene in Black Mirror, hands down, because of the combo of this song + cinematography/photography used. Wow. Even more incredible when you compare it to the original video here 😂. They absolutely crushed it

I remember the year this song came out. There was a surge of interest in the Watership Down book. My mum tricked me into reading it when I was off sick from school and bored. I cried so much when I saw this. Now Im crying again after all those years. Someone ask me what traumatised me most as a child. Watership down without a doubt
I watched this on holiday as a child..we were staying in an isolated country cottage surrounded by fields and wildlife...but sadly blighted by lots of sick rabbits suffering from myxomatosis . Nida Black Mirror, I think this song is dedicated for her....when the singer sings bright eyes and we see her eyes, I think she has the most bright eyes ever!
At the end of Watership Down the Black Rabbit of Inle comes for Hazel to take him to the afterlife. At the end of Demon 79 the demon takes Nida away to the afterlife so it's a reference to that.

just finished my masters thesis (film science) where I also wrote about this lovely film and how no remake (see netflix 2018) can reach this level again. this film deserves so much more attention than just "oh, it´s so gory and violent"... it´s a masterpiece of animation
Best seller of 1979 and a classic from Watership Down. Written by Mike Batt, who had wrote the Wombles songs and the theme tune to Summertime City on BBC1. Maybe he was thinking of Maggie Thatcher- she entered no 10 when this was no 1 on Thursday 3 May 1979. 6 weeks at the top of our chart and a million seller.
Me too, my favourite and Robin’s voice!! I get goosebumps just listening to him. Every song he sings, his voice is just so pure and clear and beautiful
This film is great and Art Garfunkel singing Bright Eyes a perfect choice to sing that haunting theme song gets my emotions up everytime (is it a kind of shadow)

This movie honestly made my childhood. I loved it. I also recently watched the black mirror episode demon 79 which i think kind of referenced watership down at the end. And our family dog passed away yesterday and I've been listening to this song and it fits 💔

Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes
1:05 "...nobody seems to know where you go..." I feel that this is an interesting part of the song.
so beautiful, and haunting at the same time 🥰
Demon 79 = best Black Mirror episode (best for last). When everyone believes you (what's that like)?
Yep. I thought season 6 wasnt that good. Song is a classic though. Amazing
Awesome song... awesome movie
The film traumatised me as a kid over 35 years ago and haven't been able to watch it since. The song still makes me very sad 😢
A song that still traumatises a generation.
It's about facing the inevitable. Here's an idea: CHOOSE to talk about death & dying.
@@sundareshvenugopal6575 Huh? How so?
@@BlisterKitten You're not it the generation
I love this song
The first time I saw death! I was 6! And I don't get a nostalgic feeling Im more sad and want to cry cause I immidiatly rememer that rabbit stuck in that trap with all that blood and that mean rabbit 😭
I love this song ,remember it back inthe70is it still brings tears to my eyes ,love to back to those years were everything was so calm and peaceful
Dieses Lied lieben alle Generationen!
Yeah, they sure do
This movie honestly made my childhood. I loved it.
I also recently watched the black mirror episode demon 79 which i think kind of referenced watership down at the end.
And our family dog passed away yesterday and I've been listening to this song and it fits 💔
Black Mirror Demon79 brought me here. Best outro since Heaven is a Place on Earth from San Junipero.
Absolutely heavenly 😢
I came back here because of black mirror 😁
Mee too
Big thank you to Black Mirror for making me aware of this song. Loved the episode too.
Same
I loved this song and the movie always brought tears to my eyes. So sad.
