dont forget to tell everyone that they LOVE direct sun! This makes their color more brilliant. At first, I thought it was a protective mechanism like the jade; however, I noticed with both the red and purple wandering jew, the color will go bright pink/red when exposed to direct sun and the plant grows thicker in the stems and seems happier!
They're not typically sun-thriving plants, as they grow on the forest bottom; their leaves are delicate and too much direct sunlight will scorch them. That said, having them out in the sun for a while during the day can be beneficial and if you'll do, make sure it won't be in the prolonged periods of afternoon. My south-facing window gets sun from late morning till noon and my plants seem to love it. I would definitely avoid having them out in the sun for many hours, though.
Not all tradescantia like direct sun. The ones you mention do though. I have the purple heart in direct Texas sun, and they grow like mad. Also when the sun gets stronger in Spring and Summer, they get a lot brighter and very beautiful 😊
It was super helpfull to see the progression on the growth. Makes it a little less scary to cut it back that much. Thanks for putting in the time and effort.
This video really helped me alot. I have a Tradescantia that I got from cuttings, and after watching this video I am now going to attempt to trim back to get some cuttings to repot. I will be following the directions in this video, and keeping my fingers crossed with the hope of not killing it. UPDATE: Ok, I took cuttings from the mother plant, and planted them back into the pot to hopefully get it to become bushier. I really hope this works.
I just got this plant today and the first that I did was a UA-cam search. I was elated to see one of the top results associated to your channel. Thanks to this video I learned about pruning and how to have more dense growth. Will give this a try.
Thanks for the video. I bought one last year. It nearly died travelling back to the UK. I brought it back from the brink of death, and it's grown so much. I've chopped and propped it till kingdom come! Mine is starting to look a little leggy. If the 1st leaf is non-existentt (due to drying out from under watering) do I just cut the bare stems at the base but above a node?
I have better luck growing cuttings in sphagnum moss rather than soil. Can I grow them in moss first, wait until they’ve got established roots, and then pot them with the original? I realise it’s more work haha I’m a tad worried about cutting is rotting and affecting the main plant.
I have the gold wing variety and it almost died. I cut it all up and put it in water and in just over a month, it’s now 3 times bigger. I can’t grow this plant in dirt, but I’m extremely successful with it in water.
Thank you so much! This is information I needed. I'm grateful you detailed (and showed) that we need to cut ABOVE a leaf to prune it and BELOW the node to propagate it! This always confused me (where exactly to cut for each purpose) Question: My wandering "dude" is EXTREMELY long (1 ft) compared to yours. Can I cut it in a few pieces to propagate if I take care to ensure the top is still the top and cutting below a node? Thanks 😊
How many stems do you initially put in the pot to start? I received cuttings initially and my plant just got leggy and not attractive so I keep cutting it back and replanting with the same problem happening. Would be super helpful to see a start to finish video on propagating and planting a bushy tradescantia. Thanks!
Would the same method work for. Rubella makoyana please? I’ve grown 4 from my late mother’s plant and just have long stems with pairs of leaves coming off it. Thanks in advance .
I'm having the hardest luck growing this plant. When I first got it the silver lines were silver and glittering. I repotted it and cut down the limpy leaves
this is the same plant that I told you about that got the mealy bugs! I was able to save a total of 1/4th of it because the leaves HATE being wet. I have decided to use a systemic from now on. May I ask though, would you suggest allowing this plant to climb a moss pole?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I don't have any idea. It should be more bushier just like your plant but no, it become ugly once I cut them. I might be cutting it wrong.

Direct sun with some caution 😅

A la mía nunca le gustó el sol y se me desmayó
Not direct sun but as much bright indirect you can give. Brightest spot but the plant shouldn't be able to "see" the sun

Glad it was helpful!
This type of tradescantia is quite resilient. You may leave days without water, but don't do that too much!
I’ve been inspired to start looking after my plants better.
Great to hear!

Hope it goes well for you! Be interested to know how it goes
Did it work?

Same!
Definitely had a leggyness problem. She's bloomed, and hanging quite low at this point but I definitely want it to be more full. Quite informative
Thanks
Looked at mine, the one I sprayed with windex, it now needs a haircut. Really great video. I’ve learned a lot from you, thanks so very much.❤
Thanks for watching!
i really love your channel, and especially your wit!
I appreciate that!
Thanks so much for sharing this! I think I'm going to try cutting one of mine back and go for the bushy look!
Go for it!
I just bought one of these in b and m bargain store for £3 was very impressed he's very Peggy though so this video was really helpful thank you
You bet!
Brilliant. I'm going to give this a try with my Zebrina. Thanks!
No problem!
Mine looks like a vine ! Four feet long white and green. Going to try to get it bushy
I like what you did. I reckon if you keep pruning you’re gonna get a very bushy plant 🌱
Absolutely!
Thank you! Mine looks so sad right now.

Yep can do
do you do your tradescantias makeup before recording? this is one of the few ives seen that are reasonably healthy looking

Nice 👍
Very nice video, the plant look so healthy, very informative

Yea that will work nicely
No
Thank you for your vidéo i love tradescantias plants and i will do the same 😊
My pleasure 😊

The more the merrier!
Oh... Another plant that I'll kill again.
Anyway will plan to get one tomorrow😂
Any tips on fertilizing it?
Regular feed for houseplants following dosage instructions
Thank you

Sorry i know nothing about the plant
I'm having the hardest luck growing this plant. When I first got it the silver lines were silver and glittering. I repotted it and cut down the limpy leaves
It’s a tricky plant to keep looking it’s best. I’ve got a care video coming out soon about it
@@SheffieldMadePlants. I'm learning that Tradescantia maintenance is a matter of continual pruning and recycling rooted cuttings
did you replant the cuttings into that same plant?
Yeah it’s a good way to get bushy trads

This plant is more of a creeper than a climber so I wouldn't recommend a moss pole
Thanks! Does this also work with the variation called nanouk?
Yes it does though it’s not quite as quick at growing
After getting it to bush, will it eventually drape and hang?
Yes it will
Not all from the same root? Multiple clippings planted in pot?
I see at about 3:30 ty
My Tradescantia plant has become leggy and the new leaves that are growing are very small compared to the original leaves.
What should I do
Chop it back and give it more light
The thing if I cut them, it will produce smaller leaves which is ugly to me
Why smaller leaves?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I don't have any idea. It should be more bushier just like your plant but no, it become ugly once I cut them. I might be cutting it wrong.
Is it the green jew
hello, i have been having a lot of issues with mine is there any way we can get in touch and you can help me
I'm on Insta
After I trim the top of my wandering Jew the new leaves are so small
Is it in bright light?
Under plant light wanted more bushy instead of hanging down ,have no where to hang so when trimed top down leaves cam in small
Will always be a ugly plant inside. This is a plant thats not meant to be a house plant.
