The same thing happened to me! I was at the nursery and there was a small snipet lying on the table top. I picked it up to save it. When I went to pay for my items, I told the cashier that it was all by itself on the table, she said okay so off I went with it. It was about a 3" piece. I rooted it in water and now it's in a small pot and doing well so far, it's only been about 3 weeks.
Really like your videos. Appreciate the love of plants not the trendy. I’m lucky here in zone 7 in the US, I have the pallida species called Purple Heart growing as a border plant, I walk around breaking the stems and just shoving them into the ground and have a beautiful thick hedge. They die back in the winter but come back every spring. ✌🏼🪴
Greetings.💚💜 had to jump in & say... Wandering Jew(s)...are so friendly. Both the Solid purple, much larger & slender leaf. And the lovely striped variety. Passed our 100's of cuttings to my neighbors over the yrs... thank you 4 video.
My simple, humble tip for growing them is: NO. I mean yes. I mean they WILL grow, don't be sad if it is not where you want them to grow. Every year my ones become massive, endure full sunlight and summer heat, stay healthy even during the first frosty days of winter...but they NEVER do that in the pot where I put them. From my pots they just escape and search for a new home. Because ANYWHERE is better than in my pot. Last year they invaded my Aji White Fantasy and they both wait now for frost free days.
Bougth one of them today. Couldn't resist the colour. First thing I do at home: Take a look at your channel if you got a video for that one too. And there it is! Thanks!!!
Completely uncanny. Just showed up to this video after saving a 3 leaf piece from the bottom of my shopping cart at a home diy store in Texas. Thank youuu
Thank you! You were my 3rd or 4th video I watched looking for how to take care of my Tradescantia Zebrina plant I got my local walmart bc I fell in love with its beautiful colors and I absolutely loved how simple and easy you explained all. Thank you. Will give you an update of how my, (now dying palnt :( is doing. God bless.
Thank you Becca! I appreciate your kind comment. Tradescantia are quite resiliant plents, if it's not happy its probably too much water or not enough, if you have been watering it regularly try leaving it to dry out a bit and see if that helps, if you have let it get a little dry then maybe some more water miught cheer it up. Good luck and please do let me know how its doing. :-)
@@HouseplantHacks Thank you so much sir! what I did was get them new soil, pot and just started pocking the good ones out and putting them in the new pot with fresh soil. also moved them from where they were and put them near a window for sunlight. (heard they like light too) Hopefully it works! Thank you again for taking the time to answer back for the tips and for the good luck wish! Greatly appreciate. will keep you posted on how they're doing :-) if it worked or not.
@houseplanthacks my plant died completely sad to say. Tried everything possible to save her but didn't work. I guess I wasn't made for this. I thank you still for the tips trying to help me. Maybe I'll try again in the future. Take care 🙋🏽♀️
@@beccarodriguez77 So sorry Becca, don't be too sad, these things can happen, sometimes the plant is already sick by the time you buy it, things happen slowly with plants and its not always obvious what is wrong. Don't be too hard on yourself its just part of the learning process and there will be more successes than failures I'm sure. What part of the world are you in Becca?
Thanks Andy. Great video. I've had mine for a year or so and allowed it to grow really tall using the potting sticks. I'm about to repot and include some cuttings I'll take off to make it fuller. 😊
I had an inch plant years ago but it grew so leggy that the stems became to heavy and snapped! So I threw it away 😔 now I know how to look after them I will be taking cuttings growing and giving them away 👏👏😉😉
Im currently working on one in a hanging basket that looks dead and dried out close to the pot, but looks great (and is growing wildly) further down the trailing limbs. Its like a thick mass of healthy plants trailing out of a pot that appears to have dead plants in it.
I had a tree fall on my house yesterday (no major damage, so lucky) anyway, a few days before I had set my wj on the porch steps and it was decimated by that tree, I trimmed up stems that didn't get completely crushed and go limp in a glass jar of water. I'm hoping I can save it.
Hi thanks for the lovely video, can you please tell me from where I could get the hanging planter like yours with the drain dish attached to the planter. I really want to get the same. Many thanks.
Hi, I found one of these for next to nothing this morning in my local co/op, I don’t have windowsills and wanted it for our bedroom, will it tolerate low light? Mines so big I was amazed it was so cheap 😀
Yes it will be ok in low light, it may just grow slower, on a sunny day if you can move it to a sunny spot somewhere in another room this will help it out. Enoy your plant. :-)
Glad to have yoyr video in my feed. New subscriber here. Perfect timing as I want to report my wandering jew. I use loam soil and coco peat. Do I need to add perlite to it?
Glad to have you as a subscriber Risha! Thank you for your lovely comment! Tradescantia as super easy to keep and very robust so you can use anything you like for the soil really, if you have perlite I would add some in as it helps get oxygen to the roots and helps drainage but if you don't have any to hand I wouldn't worry too much. If you keep them regularly watered they will do just fine! ;-)
It really is a beautiful colour, the contrast of the vivid purple leaf backs, with the stripes on the front that look like they have been painted with a brush and shine in the light, when you take the time to really look it is a real piece of art!
Maybe lack of fertilizer? Give it some general purpose houseplant food once per month and see if that makes a difference. Different variety maybe? Could be a few things.
I'm not sure which one that is Anca, can you check the botanical name for me? Sometimes the growers name their plants different things, A google search doesnt come up with anything. If you can let me know which one you mean I will do my best to give it a feature for you. Andy
@@HouseplantHacks thanks for answering me. the plant is from the same trandescanzia family only it has purple leaves. i live in italy and i see it in all the terraces, balconies, gardens .. and really beautiful .. in italian it is called pale trandescanzia but i don't know in English. And as she is good and explains well I was wondering if she could make a video about her before buying her ..
I'm going to do both. I've been in a bit of a sentimental mood lately. I'm trying to do all of the plants that I can remember my grandma growing. This is definitely one of those.
Nice video, thanks. I really would have liked to see how much a little water is. My Tradescantia has been on the verge off death ever since I received it as a healthy plant. I've been trimming it appropriately, taking cuttings and then popping them in the pot as you demonstrated but the cuttings have rotted. Is it better to bottom water? I have another lot of cuttings, which I've rooted in water and will put in a different pot but would like some advice on the watering if possible. Thanks again (I'm in London)
It could be that your soil is too heavy and retaining too much water? Tradescantia is usually very easy to propagate from cuttings so something muct be wrong if they are rotting and I would guess too much water. Does it take a long time for the soil to dry out? On your other point about how much is a little.. my latest video is all about watering so this may help also.. ua-cam.com/video/lsHMIB0OspM/v-deo.html

Thank you for sharing Ivan! I would love to see them growing wild one day, Hopefully one day on my travels!

In the UK it is too cold i the winter for it to survive so it's an indoor only plant for us, I've really enjoyed growing this one so far. :-)
Mine hates me !! In water she not even try to root, grr. Not give up yet, yet!!

Lol uh huh..."dropped off"...like soooo many others. "Oh I found them on the floor"
How long did it take to grow to that length?
They grow very fest in the right conditions just a few months.
We can’t see your potting bench!
Appologies Maggs! I'll try harder next time. :-)
What soil do you use for these plants?
I use a general purpose houseplant soil.
i too am a wandering jew
Nice vdo
Thank you!
Mine must not like me because Im having trouble
Maybe try to repot with fresh soil? Can often help.
