One of the easiest and most beginner-friendly houseplants to work with, which produces beautiful looking growths and does so in an incredibly short timespan. It's really difficult to kill off as well, though people should remember to be moderate with water and avoid watering the leaves directly, as they hate moisture and will instantly start to rot the moment they get wet.
Just bought two of these so thank you for this video!! Had to stick the top in water as it broke off as I was repotting, where it came from the store it was bone dry and needed some care 🌱🌿
I'm surprised you put the leaf directly onto the soil. I've read (and have experienced) the leaves that touch the moist soil always end up rotting. Any updates on this plant?
Not sure how you would make a tradescantia into a bonsai lol. As it is a trailing icy houseplant not a tree. A tree is what you would make or should I say prune & train into a bonsai.
Thank you so very much for such a great detailed video on instructions on how to propagate these beautiful plants. Now on to successfully making some newer plants from the one my friend just gave me a few months ago ❣️
This must be what I have. My 7 yr old granddaughter got a clipping at school and she was so excited to give it to me in a tiny Dixie cup. She said her teacher called it a wandering “dude”. 🤣 It’s a single cutting but it’s already (a week later) getting a new leaf.
Thanks for the info, I bought a very bushy one from the store and over watered it, and only a few stems survived. They're growing tall but I want to make the plant bushy again :)
did you cut the leggy ones and stick them in the soil? I have learned that same lesson, they do not need much water at all...they actually do not mind drying out for short periods of time. Thanks for sharing
This looks a lot like the Tradescantia Feeling Flirty (from Proven Winners) that I got from Home Depot. The leaves on mine are smaller, though. My gripe with the ones I've seen at Home Depot and Lowe's is that they seem so crowded in the pot. It was nearly impossible to get a finger down to the soil. I guess that's where a moisture meter would come in handy. I found the least crowded plant, but I still think it might need to be split up.
Sooo, i bought one of these plants from a pet store in a little 1.5 inch pot, there were 3 short stems growing out of it, i left it in a fish tank with just the bottom touching the water, 2 moths later the thing is growing like crazy and i had to come here to learn how to cut it lol, i juts thought it was funny that you said dont leave the dirt wet and here i am with it living in a fish tank.. it works for now i guesss.
I’ve watched so many videos on propagating these and I’ve had crap luck. I don’t overwater my plants but it seems like my cuttings just get mushy and don’t grow roots. I’ve tried propagating them this way as well as in water. All these videos say it’s so easy so why do my cuttings just die?
I tried both water prop and planting right into the soil. I had better luck with water prop. But I would like to try the soil method again. Should I keep the soil wet during the 2 weeks while roots are growing??
Let your water sit out in a pitcher for 24 to 48 hours so all chlorine evaporates, or use distilled keep a light on it for minimum 8 hours. Change water out every couple days and it should get roots.
@@Beeautifullifefarm thank you so much! I’ve been lucky so far by using my tap water for my plants but this is a great idea! I also want to get a rain barrel.
Can you still do clippings even though the ends are flowering? I'm assuming the flowers will die off but mine is quite long and flowering at all the ends
Hi! I was glad to get your video, I am a new tradescantia grower. Your video helped me a lot, although I need to ask can I place new cuttings in my one stem already rooted plant? I’m not sure if the babies require different care than the mother plant. Thanks, Yvonne
😭😭😭 I accidentally got caught up on one of my nanouk prop cuttings and I felt the new root break. Do you think it will try to reroot itself again??? I’m so devastated 😭 I’m so mad at myself.
I had to keep my house plants at my grand mas for a little during my move and her cat ate my cute little tradescantia 😢 it's a much smaller version of this, still pink n green but with tiny tiny trailing leaves. Can't figure out what kind it is but it is a tradescantia
I have to make sure MY plants are out of the reach of my cat's teeth. I just don't want her destroying them. Not too worried about her getting sick, but I heard the Tradescantia was pretty toxic. Did the cat survive eating this plant?
It is said that tradescantia root a lot better and faster in soil! I tried propagating my nanouk in water and they didn’t die but there were no roots for a couple of weeks but once I put them into soil they rooted pretty quickly. I was kinda shocked since most cuttings root well in water but here we are....
What kind of fertilizer do you use? How much indirect light, or direct light? ...It's been my experience that leaves touching the soil get moldly and don't do well, so I'm really confused by this posting.
@@taylorwilliams4131 What country are you in please? A north window wouldn’t do too well here in (even my south) UK. Just not enough sun to make the bright light Tradescantia like. And in winter that would only be for about 5 hours, reducing! I’ve had mine only about 4-5 months, and haven’t yet thought if I’ll have to move it away from the cold glass in winter, tho it’s double glazed it’s still very cold to touch from Nov to March.
@@Pyron5hadow my east window would be perfect then as I live in UK. its not much sun in winter. mine is deep purple satiny glittering leaves. love this beautiful plant.
Great video! Been coming back to it while I sort out my purp, but I'm just wondering... I've just made some new cuttings, as I wanted to reorganize it and I have been left with some rather nice cuttings, so can I just pot them right away? Should I put them in water to propagate first or? Thanks!
Lack of water, so the leaf is drying out. Too much water will cause brown spots, rot. Or the leaf is just going through some winter dormancy and natural shedding like a tooth, new branches grow out from under the existing leaf. Hope those 3 examples help you... maybe not enough light as well... give it a few hours in the sun and let the soil dry out before watering
Thanks for showing you can propagate with each node. I cringe every time I see people take 2-4 leaves off when propagating. Such a waste of a beautiful plant.

Is anyone growing a Tradescantia right now?
I’m trying to double my nanouk right now!
I’m going to try after watching this 💖😄
Thank you for sharing great information. I am trying to do double my nanouk too.
One of mine is flowering :)
Yes, I am. I purchased one 8 months ago. Now I have 10. Easiest plant to propagate ever. For me anyhow

I think I was giving mine a little too much care lol I didn’t realize how easy this plant was supposed to be. Thank you! Subscribed! ❤
I just learned this beautiful plant was developed in the Netherlands in 2012
i got mine from you guys in december! the soil spoiled and gave me bugs so now she’s thriving in sphagnum moss!
I got my first one as a bonsai I’m excited to learn more about this majestic plant!

Very detailed, informative, and easily understood.

What is this sorcery, I saw this on my UA-cam recommended exactly as I picked up my tradescantia Nabouk cutting
Who on Earth is travelling in 2021 though?!
Same with me 😱
You call it ‘long and lanky’ I would call it a lovely trailing plant!
I recently purchased my first one. It grew BIG fast! So I want to know…can these cuttings grow in water as well as soil or moss?
I always have some clippings in water. They grow roots so quickly, like in days.

Once the plant has grown and formed within the first pot, can you move to a slightly large one and add more cuttings around?
Absolutely, you are on to something there!! ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

Thank you for the tips.

I have one of those so i was wondering what kind of Light does it like ?
Is this indoor as well and is safe for Animals so so pretty
it is indoor, the plant sap can be an irritant to your pets if swallowed. Read more about this at mygardenchannel.com/tradescantia-pink-nanouk/
