Got the compass over the outback as I mainly do sea fishing (offshore) and the compass cuts through the swell and chop more efficiently. Both are great kayaks and great to fish out of.

He stated the outback was wider lol. Pretty sure they’re both 34” the outback is longer, it’s basically same kayak with more upgrades done to it for more fishing related. Not to say throwing some rod holders or h rails on the compass won’t get you similar results for almost half the price. I think the compass is more stable due to hull design.

I have a 2019 outback. Been on the Pacific Ocean with big swells to Lake Superior with 26mph wind. It did very well on open water. Granted i did upgrade my rudder to a 2016 PA to handle high current and fast wind but is a must just because the stock 2019 outback rudder is just too small and flimsy.

Thanks, great comparison video. I have owned an Outback for 12 years (an older model). I've mostly been happy with it. except I'm not so you and fit anymore and I've since had a major back injury. and I'm really starting to feel the weight, I car top mine and it's just getting too heavy. Also, I've downgraded to a little sedan now and it's gotten damaged unloading off the vehicle. I think pretty soon I'll be looking at a lighter Hobie and I like the look of that compass or possibly the revolution. It would be so great to head out fishing for the day without all the strain and hassle.

    Great comparison!
This really gives folks some terrific details to help anyone just starting with a Hobie to make an informed choice.
I started out with an Outback (it was the demo version so was almost the same price as the then-new Compass), and as a bass fisherman, I did love it! Then I upgraded to the newer Outback just for the gear setup you outlined. Then the next year I upgraded to the Pro Angler 12 360, and I just bought a Pro Angler 14 360!! The weight on the PAs is a BIG consideration for us older guys (I'm 70), so I did get a Dynamic Dolly and just bought a trailer.
The Outback is pretty stable, but the PAs are tops! But I'm sure the Outback is better in that faster water, especially for paddling -- and I know from experience paddling the PA 12 is NOT that easy! It's just so wide.
Keep up the geat work and keep folks informed!

@@thebeardedpaddler I do love stability! I had an issue with the drive and couldn't use my PA 12 during the end of last fishing season. So my fishing buddy, who had bought my Outback, loaned it back to me so I could keep fishing. I was AMAZED at how much lighter it was and easier to haul around! I even considered getting an Outback but as I'm a "big boy," the larger PA makes me more comfortable on the water.
      Keep the great videos coming!

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Compass has som more features and weight to it. The Passport is more of a light duty pleasure craft that you can obviously still fish from. Go 12ft if looking at the Passport

I have a 2018 Compass I bought new before the Outback got it's current layout.
One of the things I don't like about the Outback is the top of the side rails are very busy. It seems like the designers went out of their way to occupy every square inch of the surface. Fine of it suits the way you fish, not so much of it doesn't. The cockpit on the Compass is more of a blank slate that you can really customize and make it your own.
I wish the Compass had the guardian transducer and an upgraded seat. Then it would be perfect.

Mayhe you could guide me a right direction here. I am split weather to get a compass or an outback. I fish rivers and do not use a ton of equipment but want some room for tackle and rods. Your points lead me to the compass but the outback looks like it is built a bit better.

    • @thebeardedpaddler

Cool walkthrough, thanks! I have a Compass on order and am excited to pick it up later this month. I’m having the outfitter move the circular hatch to the front and installing the longer storage hatch in front of the seat. Recently I heard that there may not be enough room for it, and the only option is the wider hatch that runs left and right. Have you run into this issue?

    • @thebeardedpaddler
      @thebeardedpaddler  Рік тому

We have done the upgrade several times. Hobie used to make a shallower tub that fit the horizontal hatch but can't seem to get it with Hobie anymore. The V hull hits the sides of the tub bottom. May be other options now though

Good comparison. I am picking up a Hobie Mirage Lynx next week. I have found that these other boats are too heavy for me to go solo without getting some sort of lifting device to put it on the truck. (Back issues). You lose some features in favour of light weight, but I think it’ll be good.

I am 6.7 ,= 2 Meter tall an my body weight is 125kg
Witch hobie kajak would fit me?
I want to go kajaking on calm rivers
Mosel und Lahn, close to Koblenz, and a lake where the water is usual calm.
Maybe a tandem is an option!?.
But it depends on, that i have engouh space in it.

I'm 6'5 and have no issues whatsoever. I do not have to use the tallest setting on the adjustable drive. I would suggest the Pro Angler or the Outback due to the adjustable seat hight of the Outback and the high seat of the Pro Angler. This will give you a much more comfortable seating position. Definitely a dealer issue. This has been my biggest issue with warranty claims. Most of the warranty issues seem to be due to REALLY poor paddleshop service. Have you been to visit your dealer in person? I would really hold their feet to the fire as its their job.
