Light sensitivity and abnormal pupil dilation due to vagus nerve injury

  • Ross Hauser, MD discusses a common symptom in patients with upper cervical spine instability and injuries: light sensitivity and abnormal pupil dilation. As he explains, this is due to problems with the vagus nerve and cervical sympathetic ganglion, both of which run very close to C1-C2. When the ligaments that stabilize C1 and C2 become too loose, due to a sudden injury or chronic overstretching, the unstable vertebrae can have damaging effects on the nerves running through our head and neck that control our vision, balance, and much more, often producing painful migraines that are worsened by being in bright light. In our office, we use Digital Motion X-ray to help accurately diagnose cervical instability and treat accordingly with Comprehensive Prolotherapy and curve correction therapy.
We would love to see how we can help you if you are suffering from neck pain, migraines, balance issues, vision problems, or other neurological symptoms without definitive answers.

Thank you sir! I’ve had extreme light sensitivity my whole life and everyone thinks I’m exaggerating(even my eye doctor). But I think I might have what you described here. I don’t get migraines but simple car lights, computer screens, or ceiling lights feel like too much light and have to squint constantly. Very tiring since my job requires 8 hours staring at the computer. It’s very dangerous while driving too. Very hopeful that there might be a cure

Hi Dan, Glad you found the information helpful and we hope you will find resolution to your light sensitivity or ways to lessen the strain of staring at the computer for 8 hours. If you feel this symptom is among others that may be related to your neck, this is what we specialize in and would be happy to talk with you more about your case. Wish you all the best in health!

Hi Dan, I have exactly the same and have also had the same responses as you from professionals. I don't have great posture which explains a lot and I'm finding it helps to work on this and also making sure that my glasses are as comfortable as they can be. I had to give up computer work and find it generally helps to avoid too much reading. It was really good to find this video. The explanations are very helpful.

Hi doctor, I really appreciate your contribution here.
I always feel that i have an issue with pupile due to feel burning and soaring when I especially gazing a monitor. It also causes headache and dizzy every morning. I have visited Ophthalmologist recently but couldn’t get the point other than a confirmation that it isn’t glaucoma at all. Later I found myself that it is pupil related.
I modified a pinhole glasses with just one hole each, and it relieves when i watching monitor, however, the sight was then became narrow so was hinder my work. Also I feel fatigued that if i kept maintaining wearing pinhole glasses with a hole on the each side.
I’ve been thus seeking for eyedrops that reduce pupil and there’s one but with side effects of internal organs and abnormally growing eye brows like a woman.
Could you please advice to relieve the symptom? I’m looking forward your answer
    Sincerely, Moby

Thank you for this video - I made thorough notes. I certainly do have this problem and the explanations are really helpful. I find that in good lighting I need a VER strong plus to see but much less of one in poorer lighting. Could this be related? As I wear a strong plus I find this has reduced the sensiti ity in my left eye so I can be functional but would still not tolerate a light being shone directly in that eye.

Hi Blacksquareable, Thanks for taking a moment to share. Glad that you related to some of the vagus nerve discussion and possibly gives you an avenue to explore for your case. What you're saying makes sense to us as we see cases where there are differences between the eyes that can be measured and explained by cervical instability affecting the nerve function. We do various tests in our center for patients with these problems for both the eyes and the cervical spine, so we wouldn't know for sure how it would apply to their specific case without seeing someone in person. But we can say it is something that we see every day. If you wanted our neck team to take a much deeper dive into your case and see if you sound like a good candidate for our testing and treatment center, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We wish you all the best in health and getting to the bottom of your vision symptoms in the coming weeks and months. Take care for now.

Hi doc, I started experiencing severe light sensitivity among other symptoms. My neck always hurting, there was this one time that too much light made me anxious and I went to a panic attack mode. Which one of my coworkers point out my eyes were moving rapidly side to side. Have you ever experience someone going through that? I also wear shades indoors for the same reason.

What are your thoughts on upper cervical chiropractic like Atlas orthogonal? Is this something you think is useful in conjunction with prolotherapy or is it unnecessary and tightening ligaments will results in muscles loosening and alignment being achieved on its own?

    • @CaringmedicalProlotherapy
      @CaringmedicalProlotherapy  4 роки тому

Hi Gabby, Thanks for the question. The answer is both! :) We like working with upper cervical chiropractors and ultimately we both want what is best for the patient to provide healing so they can move on and do not have to revolve their lives around their progressively disabling neck conditions. There are cases where it is useful before trying, or in conjunction with, Prolotherapy. So, many times they refer patients to our office when the patient has not responded to treatment and the lax ligaments are known to be causing cervical instability. When the ultimate goal is stimulating long-term repair of the ligaments, Prolotherapy is the treatment of choice so the vertebrae can stay aligned. Once the ligaments can do their job properly, the muscles can finally relax. Hope that helps.

My son has extreme light sensitivity. Eye and primary doctors have run tests of the brain and spine along with nerve pulses. The conclusion of the cause is a massive frontal lobe brain injury or meningitis (he has had both). Both can have a major impact on the eyes. He has a hard time finding the right sunglasses for the sensitivity, FL-41 doesn't work nor does polarized. Any suggestions? Going broke trying to find sunglasses. His vision is good otherwise!

For over a year now I have started experiencing dizziness / disequilibrium / balance problems from what I have realized a few times after experiencing them, we re being triggered after some time of working on my PC / laptop, or to be more general, from light emitting electronic devices. Every time I was experiencing dizziness my sensitivity was getting worse - getting to the point where I could no longer sit to work for more than 15 minutes a day on my PC / laptop for a few months during last year.
Bright light and to be more specific, relatively bright light when compared to the external / surrounding environment is producing usually - firstly symptoms of eye fatigue (feeling pressure around the eyes), lack of brain clarity / brain fog - and if I continue being exposed to the light I will eventually experience dizziness / disequilibrium / balance problems either at that time but could as well do so a few hours later.
I have tried a lot of things which are too many to list here but one relevant thing I could mention in that I feel comfortable using blue light screen filters and I also wear my blue light blocking glasses which seem they have helped a bit by elongating the time I can watch at screens (by a little).
From briefly explaining my symptoms and the triggers that are associated with them - would you say that the light induced balance problems with the early symptoms I have described, are highly possible to originate from upper cervical instability? Indeed your video has stated that cervical instability can cause dizziness & light sensitivity - but what I am trying to understand and hopefully correlate, is how the light sensitivity itself (which could even as you said originate from cervical instability) be the trigger to the symptoms (pressure around the eyes, brain for, dizziness) I have mentioned. Where would you think that falls in the puzzle?
I appreciate very much your videos and I would really appreciate to get your thoughts on my case. Thank you very very much.

Hi Andy, Thanks for sharing your experience. We are fans of blue light filters and glasses, as the brain is inundated with so many images now more than ever. But there is also the issue of structural instability that can objectively be tested for using Digital motion x-ray and other tests. So, we feel it is a complex problem that requires a comprehensive approach. That is our experience with treating many patients with a huge list of symptoms, including what you mentioned and many others, and why we do the types of motion testing and treatment of the neck and eyes that we do at our center. We take a very detailed look at cases and try our best to help our patients achieve long-term success with alleviating their symptoms and returning to full function. If you would like our team to look at the details of your case and possibly see you in our center, you are welcome to reach out to us directly and complete a case intake form: www.caringmedical.com/neck-patient-candidate-form/ Andy, we wish you all the best in getting to the root cause of your symptoms and restoring your health. My eyes are sensitive to light but doesn’t hurt my eyes it’s just a harsh glare all day 24/7
This happened to me after I took two fioricets and my mouth got extremely dry and my eyes started involuntarily blinking
Ever since then my symptoms have been
Mild intoxication comes in windows and waves
Light glare all the time 24/7 in the night
    Eye pressure
    Both eyes not just one
Loopy thoughts that I litterally have to recollect myself and say wow that was weird.

I only took 20 of them throughout the course of 2-3 months in spreads
I have no anxiety ! It’s not accompanied with anxiety
    The only time
I get it is when I think this will be permanent 😕

I have this in my left eye. It was never a big problem to me unless I step out on a bright day. The doctors told me that it will stay this way for me for life and there is no cure as the nerves are dead. Further he told me just to take precautions like to wear sunglasses when I step out. Should I be concerned?

Hi Vriti, Sorry to hear that and without seeing you as a patient there is not a way to know what treatment or prevention methods would be recommended. Your doctor had a chance to examine you, but if you feel that there may have been something missed or more to your case than what was discussed, it makes sense to consider a second opinion. We wish you all the best as you navigate your options.

I do apology, as a field veterinarian seeing tons of lymphoma/cervc. lnn. granuloma mediated vagal ingestions in cattles and cervical recurrent synpatht. branch dysfunctions in snoring horses it turns out that vagal input has no control over superior cervical ganglion that is solely control of the pupil constriction. As a ParathSympht may constrict the pupil to pinpoint it only happens from upper centers and cranial nerves i.e ophthalmic pathways (regular pupil light reflex II to V motor )or inflamed meninges- affected cerebrum i.e cerebral depression (usually connected to some infection diseases or cerebral commotion). Simply put the loss of superior cervical ganglion and it's recurrent sympathetic nerve results in so called pupil dysautonomia and non responsive pupil reflex in one eye, fortunately ( unilateral sing presumptive to this nerve dysfunction) . Other things are most likely to be true. I would also/first look into complete screening and history of the patient as any mass pressing can produce the same symptom.
