I had literally exactly the same experience with porting a Hyway BBPU cylinder and piston for a 372XP. Beginning to doubt my own sanity (and porting finesse) by the end of it! Thankfully got it done and it runs like a scalded cat, but not messing about with their cylinders any more.

Yea I just found out the hard way before seeing this video of course. I was just cleaning up and chamfering the ports 9n my bbpu 372 cylinder brand new from hyway and the plating flaked off on the exhaust and intake port below and above as to screw me from using it without going further and actually porting it and changing the shapes. Which I didn't intend on doing

I’ve recently used a rocwood cylinder on my vintage stihl 038
Super/ mag and to be honest it’s not that bad.
The exhaust port wasn’t as wide as oem but I widened it. the squish band was a bit lumpy but fortunately the material was soft enough to grind down with 220 grit sandpaper super glued onto an old piston:) the numbers were pretty good straight off with no need to cut the base as it was 20 thou with gasket the exhaust roof was 104 which I lowered to 100.
I opened and shaped the lower transfers as far as possible and ended with 170 psi on the compression tester.
For the price I paid £28 I can’t complain tbh as it got the old girl running again 😂
    Love your work Joe 👍

No porting experience here, but I did experience bearing failure on a friend's 576 (non AT) about 5 years after I replaced the cylinder with am oem. Cylinder was still good and lubed, but the crank bearings were dry and purple. I told him to run 32 or 40:1 rather than the 50 to see if it helps. It's been a minute, but I don't think the strato saws lube the bottom end as well due to less mix on the underside, though my memory is a little fuzzy . . . Had my head automotive stuff for a few months and forgot a lot of chainsaw stuff lately.
I had a white box poulan 335 piston hot-sieze on me out of the box on a recovered, honed out oe cylinder, for what it's worth. Sanded it down a bit until it rattled in the bore. Super sketchy, but also successful so far. 👌
Ran a Duke's 272 kit on a 61 with good success . . . Except the .015 squish with no base gasket allowed me to buy a new piston after it broke the ring land.

On the The BB372 the upper transfer is much larger in vertical axis compared to 50mm cylinder, but on 52mm cylinder the upper transfer is not fully exposed even when piston is in BDC. The flow is disrupted with the piston wall and throughput is lower than by 50mm cylinder.

Hyway can be good for a simple swap on kit. I really think they should make the plating a bit thicker then they do just for those issues. It's very hard in some spots to get your tool to cut into and not away from the plating to keep it from chipping. I definitely understand why you personally don't like to port them for customers, I don't blame you at all. Definitely had a few my self that has chipped luckily it was on the lower side of the transfers and not the top. Since it was below the rings travel path I didn't mind it as it's my own saw and not someone else's. Always interesting videos and helpful info. 👍

That's wild Joe! I wonder how close they would be if you didn't cut the squish on the stock cylinder? Ya know, for guys like me who really can't cut squish anyway. The two I just ported, one big bore and one stock 50mm, they were very similar in power. I would have been able to feel a whole extra hp...I think. But man, it really points out some serious losses on the hyway stuff.

Questions. Being thats a wiseco piston in the 372 does it take a little longer to break in? I know theyve had issues with the titanicl never breakin in. Those uppers are huge i agree bit they dont get used to there fullest cause the piston doesnt allow for them to open so does it really hinder? Have you tried case matching your cylinder with the cases? Skirts and all i mean. Ive seen noticeable differences when i dont case match. At least with my hand dyno. Lol

  • @jimssawsnstuff8903

Great video Joe. You're exactly right about the Hyway plating. I've found it really prone to lifting if using burr bits. I've also found the Titanickle and Meteor do it, but not quite as bad. Ive been using the diamond bits for awhile now and have also been doing the outline with them thru the plating and find it works (most of the time) especially if the rotation of the bit is not lifting the plating away from the opening.
Do you use the CC 90 degree hand piece? If you're up to do a video of you porting tools, I'm sure a lot of us would be interested. A lot of people don't realize how expensive the tools are.
I wasn't expecting those results from the 576, the ones I've been around have stayed stock, and seemed to be overweight dogs.
The 51.4mm older 371 OR 372 XPW and maybe Jonsered 2077 were OEM big bores that seem to run pretty good with a bit of work.
    Thanks.

I dont know how a saw will respond but i had an rm250 that lost substantial power when the muffler would fall off the pipe. It wanted that pice of pipe to draw the exhaust out of the expansion chamber. Maby a 6 inch pice of tubing instead of a deflector would pick up a little power.

  • @ladislavgazdik7595
    @ladislavgazdik7595 Рік тому +2

By the 372 BB it seems to be that the original big bore cylinder was designed for larger stroke about 38 mm according the upper transfer. With 36 mm is not fully exposed and piston restrict the flow. The Chinese big bore and hyway just copied it. On the ported 50mm 372 you had 122 transfers on big bore only 124. It seem to be the transfers wider on 50mm cylinder than on 52mm BB. So you lose on thiner transfers and shorter timing on 52mm BB. So the bottleneck seems to be on upper transfers. You probably need to wide the upper transfer and playing with edge of piston in place of upper transfer to get needed flow.

    • @dynojoemods2764
      @dynojoemods2764  Рік тому +2

A lot of the transfer problem comes from them copying a "bored" cylinder. That is why the transfer floors are so much lower, and the transfers themselves.
Very hard to make the outside of the tunnels larger for better flow. Port widths are very similar, just the heights are off.
More compression and duration would probably really help the big bore. But every time the stone gets near the plating it is a risk of scrapping the entire cylinder.

I have a video on my page of my Stihl Ms661 I want to trade for a 592xp many extras and goodies if your interested dyno Joe your video of the 592xp making over 8 horsepower stock has peaked my interest, its like now bought oem full wrap separate, titanikel cylinder and pop-up piston, skid plate, bark box, 25inch and 30 inch bars and chains oem stihl plus scabbards. I'm located in western PA and I have all the stock parts also Egan uni foam filter kit.

I had a feeling the 576 would outperform the 372, with more cc and an oe cylinder. The 576 sure is a smooth saw, too bad they are so fat, great bucking saw though. The 576 feels just like a 572 in hand, but the 572 handles much better with the laid back bore, soon as you start them you can feel the difference.
Bummer on the hyway cylinder/ plating.
The worst aftermarket cylinder I've used was my first, ironically it was for a 576. It came Little Red Barn, and the plastic wouldn't even fit as the decomp was in the wrong spot, plating looked terrible. Never used Little Red Barn again as their service was terrible and they wouldn't replace the junk cylinder, I ended up trading the saw off yrs later.
Have you done a 268xp pop-up in a .50mm 372, super easy and they start easy and run well with a timing advanced and a muffler mod. It probably wouldn't put out the power the hyway cylinder did ported, but it would have been a great option for this guy as he would have ended up with a stock cylinder with a nice pop-up meteor piston.
Have a great weekend when you get to it Joe.

Yeh the big bore 372 at 76 cc should have done something, but the oem 576 gained really well.

I don't like the transfer tunnels in the Hyway. They are too flat on the inside radius and uneven in volume. I did like Meteor but it seems they are now just rebranded Hyway. Has anyone else noticed this?

@@dynojoemods2764 forgot the aftermarket was a big bore, I'd still have thought the oe would perform better even with similar numbers as the ports vary a lot on the aftermarket products.

@@BRKS-fj2jt 100% agree. As Joe says here you pour hours into meticulously porting these things and its bloody disappointing when they don't run as you expect and worse when they peal the cylinder after 10-20 liters of fuel no matter how much time you spend polishing chamfers. My 372 50mm saws haul serious arss I could careless about the 52mm kits. I am working with the 51.4mm OEM and my first was not up to par I hope the one I do today will pull hard. They are quite different setup too the 372 and honestly right now I'm not sure I will get it too run as good. Such is the black art of what we do. I have 3 more, I'm determined to win out.

@@dynojoemods2764 To be a little "homeowner" saw they are great. Split case, removable jug. Only real downfall is the recoil assy doesn't like real high compression. They seem to handle squish better in the .030 plus range best if you don't run a decomp cyl.
