  • A video showing the ins and outs of swapping pistons in chainsaws.
    in this video I'll show how to install a 272xp piston into a 372xp.
    thanks for watching!

    I use the 272 piston. It allows me to cut a tapered squish band (13 degress). I don't cut the base at all and lately I have been cutting the cylinder head off and making my own with a cooling fins etc. This has opened up all sorts of possibilities and I far as I can tell a lot more power.

    Tinman, I built a 372 with a 268 piston. I had a farmertec cylinder with .060 squish with no base gasket. I put the 268 piston in with a base gasket. The squish is now .019 and it's been ported. It has 82 degrees of intake timing because of the short skirt. It has to idle high to stay running but it's a fast cutting saw.

    Recently discovered you through Buckin's channel.
    So interesting & technical, amazed at the experience coming out. Didnt realize how involved it is with every little modification you choose to make. Simply explained. Thanks

    I put a 272 popup piston in a 480cd and it ran really good! Sold it for $700!

    Some JB Weld in the intake port can bring that intake timing back.

    Brilliant, just did a 272 piston in a big bore 372 on my channel. Looking forward to seeing how yours runs!

    Why would you cut the piston? Stack base gaskets. 3 base gaskets your at about .021 squish. Then check your timing. I ended up with 80,102.5,.022 putting a 268 popup in the stock bore with 3 base gaskets. Cuts fantastic. Did some work on the lower transfers and modded the muffler. You'll probably have too much intake timing if you shave the piston.

    Love these info/ tech detailed videos
    I’m looking to take my time with a 266 52mm build I’m working on next , start slowly with stock, then transfers, the exhaust and intake timing like the 372 Harvey sent to you. I just didn’t have the patience with my first 266se and grinder everything I could lol.
    Thanks again brada tinman and see you on the next one

    I have tig welded a little material on the bottom of the intake skirt and trued it up in the lathe if you don't want to use epoxy in the intake port. May be an option for you here.

    A heavy duty belt sander or disc sander with a good guide surface would work to sand the piston crown down with patience

    I like where your looking to go with this build. Just curious, does the windowed piston hurt case compression? I understand a lighter piston is a benefit, just not sold on the windowed piston. I would like your opinion!

    I had the chrome bubble up on my Hiway nikisil 660 cylinder. It had great numbers to. Now I'm not sure about the Hiway cylinders.

  • @timfunk5084
    @timfunk5084 Рік тому

    The pop up piston from Hyway should have had opening in it at wrist pin. They must make different options the kit I have used had openings. I only used one ring. Are you going to match your cases to cylinder?

  • @chrisbloodshoofd

    Would maybe the intake timing get in the desired numbers with a thicker base gasket?

  • @mikahakkinen5651

    what about lifting up the cylinder and matchning the ports to fit with another piston.making thin plate under the cylinder.

    • @tinmanssaws
      @tinmanssaws  Рік тому +1

      That is an option for sure.

      yes,that way doesnt need to shave the piston head too mutch.

      @@cammatney6388 yeah it’s no good. The plating does not go all the way to the top of the cylinder so I cannot cut the base.

    The 272 Hyway and meteor pistons I used in 372xps should be about .040 taller than stock. Maybe they changed the pistons.

    As a race 2 stroke engine builder, I can tell you anything beyond .020" squish in a medium RPM ( below 15000 ) saw, and you are giving up torque from compression loss. When you cut the entire piston top, you gave up compression again. Cutting only on the squish band area would had given you the clearance, and created a pop-up into the chamber. The sharp edge could have been rolled over to enhance flow into and out of, the cylinder. The increase of torque from compression , will help the low end response with 160 degree intake.

    Stump or dad oak land let it rip👍👍👍👍👍😎
