      Well, I wonder if - with all the new choices in CPUs and actual competition in this space - it may have affected supply of the ancillary pieces because of everyone upgrading. I know I finally went from my old X3470 Xeon build to a R7 1700.

      early 2000s it always was intel = clock speed and amd fsb speed. Cause those were always the two competing aspects of processing, studies usually show like 90% of computer isntructiosn are reading and writing to memory, so the von neuman bottle neck matters, but so does clock speed.

      The way I see it, not much has changed... my xeon E3 will pass 100C with two typhoon 1850rpm fans in push/pull on a tower cooler if it even touches AVX, and that's 3.8 GHz @ 1.16v. Jay said 1.35v and my mouth hung open. Crappy intel TIM

      Indeed, it's kind of hilarious to think about since- at least on the consumer level of processors, things used to be flipped. Pretty sure the only reason I was able to overclock my FX-6300 as high as it is (4.1 GHz is what it's currently sitting at, compared to 3.5) with air is because I slapped a huge-ass heatsink on it. That barely fit in my case.
      I didn't exactly trust the tinyass brick that was the stock cooler.

    It's GREAT! Just finished my Intel i7 8700K PC build, and also made a video about it, you know where to find it ;).
    I must say that I really like the performance of this processor. I combined it with the Asus Maximus X and overclocked it to 5.2 GHZ at 1.32v.
    Any AIO cooler suggestions? I got the Dark rock pro, but it make a lot of noise...

      I still remember prescott times, when tom's hardware did a comparison with intel's stock cooler and a closed standard PC case at the time. The 3.6GHz one If I remember correctly, overheated and started throttling on that scenario. They had to rise the MHz so much because it couldn't battle with Athlon 64 at the time on raw performance.
      I'm guessing those overheatting days could be back, except they don't offer the stock cooler anymore. Funnily the ring bus architecture is not even specced to go over 4GHz for nominal thermals and power consumption (hence the TDP values they tell and the "default CPU clock").
      Rised thermals and consumption values are dodged by using a "hidden" turbo mode, which is enabled by default on all situations, because the chip can handle the automated overclock so easily. They can tell it is a 65/95W (or whatever) CPU, even though it will never stay on spec. :)

      + Mr McGee Well I guess some people are, quite literally, a little bit slow and don't really notice just how massive of a difference there is between 60hz and something higher no matter what you do. 60hz is cancer and if your work requires a 4K/8K display then you use 60hz just because you have no choice. If you actually have a choice and don't absolutely require 4K then no sane person who isn't too slow would pick 4K60 over 1440p144 even if you don't game at all.

      Ironically enough, by not being willing to give up slightly extra performance (not even better on multi-core benchmarks either, only single core) you're actually stifling performance innovation overall in the industry. I can't praise AMD enough for getting us out of the quad-core dark ages.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 років тому +21

      DRajtify,
      The i7-8700K at 5GHz is better than the 8-core Ryzen CPU's in almost every scenario. Programs like BLENDER that can utilize 16 threads fully are not common. In some scenarios the i7-8700K wins by up to 50% whereas if there are any situations that AMD wins at all it's very, very small.
      Of course it's also more EXPENSIVE for the i7-8700K however if you want the overall best system it's hands down the i7-8700K.
      It's not "slightly extra peformance" in some situations it's a LOT.

      Games don't care that much about the CPU. In reality you won't see a huge difference in FPS, because the games are still GPU limited. CPU gets more important when you try to reach high FPS, for example when you have a 144hz panel.

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 6 років тому +3

      That's what I mean about enthusiast gaming, if you're playing with a GTX 1060 or RX4/580 or even a 1070, or at 1440p or 4K, if there are any extra FPS from the i5 it probably won't justify the extra cost for it for most people. It's mainly for the people that want absolutely every FPS that they can get.

    just built a monster pc and never entered my mind to use anything but liquid cooling .. 8700k with a Corsair H100V2 and I never have any issues with overheating or even getting close. After extreme gaming it never gets out of the 50's ..once in a while on a hot day 1 or 2 cores might hit the low 60's but most of the time 90% of the time its running in the low 40's so to me that should never be in the conversation .. just build smart from the start

    I have a 1600X running at 4.2 with 1.362V (got lucky with silicone) with a B350 Gaming 3. I pack flareX 3200 CL14 in my system currently using OC values i got from AMD forums, I managed to crank my flareX to 3466. In my honest opinion and experience, when you use 3200 vs 3000 or 2933 you notice a lot a differences. I have assembled 1600X for friends using 3200 flarex (b-dies) CL 14 and 3000 Ripjaw CL15, and i notice quite the difference. The same 1600X i have build for friends, are OC to 4.0 using air cooling (Gammax S40) at 1.38-1.39. Two of those systems, i have managed to hit 4.1 with the same range of voltage 1.38-1.39.
    But using this as an example, you should be using 8x2 Gskill FlareX CL 14 or geil model that packs the same chip. And using my own experience with 6700K and 7700k, Intel doesnt benefit as much as AMD from using faster and lower lantency model, I have seen several reviews on the internet were the usage of FlareX kit on same AMD and INTEL platform give results that are a little different from the ones you posted.
    Thanks for the great videos and reviews, keep up the awesome work, hope my little experience compared to yours, can benefit the channel in some way.
    I will be leaving you the link of were i got the OC profiles for my FlareX models. BTW the flareX detects 3200 just by turning on XMP no further tune is needed.

    Im still using a 4.8ghz 4770k, 3,5- 4 years old I think. My 1080 runs at 100% load before even half my cpu is used in every game I play (no threads or cores at 100%). Am I right to think there would't be much of a point for me to upgrade? My 1600 mhz memory is a bit outdated I guess so maybe that would help. Thoughts?

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 років тому +3

      Joegengstah,
      In general it's pointless to upgrade your 4.8GHz i7-4700K, especially if the games you play are bottlenecked by the GPU anyway. Some games will benefit from more cores (like AotS)... as for your 1600MHz memory again if the GPU is the bottleneck then the CPU isn't thus the system memory that the CPU accesses doesn't really need to be faster either.
      It's slightly more complicated than this but the basic answer is that you'd be wasting your money IMO.
      OTHER: you can still have a CPU bottleneck if no core is running at 100%, though again not if the GPU is the bottleneck. there is such a thing as thread jumping where the game code can jump between cores so that no core actually runs at 100% even though a faster CPU could boost performance if the CPU was the bottleneck

    • @Joegengstah
      @Joegengstah 6 років тому

      Allright thanks for the answers. Im leaning towards holding onto the 4770k for a while longer since as you are pointing out, it wouldn't help that much if the gpu is the limiting factor. Ive been comparing game benchmark cpu test results to mine and it looks like my cpu is still very strong even in cpu heavy games. I could probably get a few more frames, and a few higher 0.1% low frames with a 8700k even if my gpu is the bottleneck. And maybe a few games that are heavily cpu dependant will see some benefits. But it would mean buying new motherboard, ram and cpu and I dont feel the few frames are worth it for me, when the cpu is still so strong for my use. I'll just ear-mark the money and use them in a cpu generation or two, maybe amd will pressure intel some more, although I doubt much will happen then next half year or so :) Thanks for the input

      it is not 60$ less, because the cooler he used on intell is way more expensive than the cooler on amd, you are not getting that performace on 8700k without a very good and expensive cooling solution, the difference in price is much bigger, and than there is the fact that a decent amd motherboard is much cheaper than the similar board for the intel

    • @nemo2341000
      @nemo2341000 6 років тому

      That also depends on which cooling solution you're going with. Its not simple as saying Intel is better or ryzen is better. It depends on your build and what you want to achieve. And the motherboards haven't even been released yet so there is no pricing as of now. Somebody who wants to achieve the best overclock might just want to go for water cooling over air to get more performance out of his hardware. If you're not going for maximum OC there's no point in going with the 1700x to begin with.

    • @de_stroyed
      @de_stroyed 6 років тому +2

      That's a really good CPU.
      It'll beat the 1800x in almost every game (assuming 1800x is at default clock speeds).
      However, the best case scenario: if you get the "lottery" chip of 1800x and you overclock it to 4.1ghz with memory speeds up to 3200GHZ... it can potentionally he matched or shorten the gap in games between the two CPUs.
      A good overclocking 1800x will beat The 8700K in multi-threaded work loads hands down.
      Although, not sure why you got the 8700K. You could've had the 1700, and many are reporting that it overclocks to 4.0GHz with no problem.
      You would've saved about $300 (estimating and varies from region to region). The 1700 would've been the better value.

    • @destroyah3034
      @destroyah3034 6 років тому +5

      Come on Jay, please turn this feature off. Stock is 4.3 turbo boost on all cores on the 8700k.

    • @insulterify
      @insulterify 6 років тому +24

      The 4.7 is from Intel's turbo technology. It'll overclock automatically until it reaches a limit.it does it on laptop CPUs too. Because my laptop with a "Max" of 2.3ghz will boost up to 3.1 sometimes when unzipping files and regularly goes to 2.8 when starting programs and running light games. It is a stock feature technically. It's just like nvidias gpu boost 3.0. though I do agree that I'd like to see a stock comparison, with turbo boost turned off. It is also unfair he gave the Intel a water-cooler because the CPU will just naturally clock higher than if he used a similar heatsink to the ryzen system. But I won't knock this review just for that.

    • @Scootermagoo
      @Scootermagoo 6 років тому +8

      Do I smell whine and cheeeeze.
      It's stock, 4.7 is stock on a single or maybe 2 cores max. I'm not sure when turbo wasn't a feature on higher end cpu's but I can tell you my "stock" kaby lake did the same thing except on the single core stuff. AMD's do it video cards do it, I do not get why whiney keyboard amd fanchild jockeys complain about a built in feature. I want you to find a clock speed both can be tested at without turbo boosting to make this a fair fight and disable smt and ht and..
      I mean how fucking stupid are you?
      How do you compare clock speeds alone when the amd can't even attain the same speeds the intel can without major overclocking? Do we have to under clock the intels to match amd's slower offerings? I think in a fair battle you take a golden sample amd at 4.0 and everything disabled and declock a 8700k and disable everything and see who wins.. I do not think you get that this is a stupid comparison. IPC will always win in this case and you are gimping the 8700k to make the amd look good. I say this and I'll point at the single thread tests and rest my case, 6 vrs 8 cores.
      This entire conversation is getting stupid because of people like this.
      I mean stock is how intel and amd delivered the cpu's Stock clocks and everything and intel beat the amd in every test. Now the whiney amd fanchild kicks in and Here we are, you have to gimp a intel to match a amd over clocked. Let that sink in keyboard jockey.
      Face it intel is going to win that is the entire point But you will pay for it amd will produce good product and scare intel occasionally and intel will beat amd into the ground again for a while.
      AMD can't compete in the money department Intel will always win in this case. Same as Nvidia
      What I'm waiting for *shark teeth are showing little amd whiner* For an 8core 16 thread in cannon lake then that will pretty much end any conversation about this. Then it'll be 8 core vrs 8 core and if you think a 4.0ghz 8core is going to even touch a 5.0 ghz 8 core.. I think this conversation is closed.

      Ritaku if it's an enhancement than why can the 8700k get to 4.7 despite the mobo? Look it up on Intel's website. 8700k says 3.7 stock 4.7 turbo

    Jay, one of your popular overclocking videos featured x99 i7-5820k. A lot of us still use this CPU. I'd be genuinely curious to see how this chip compares to the i7-8700k in a number of scenarios, not just gaming. We're talking multiple generations worth of small improvements between the chips. Please consider comparing the two. There are a lot of 5820k users out there.

      Agreed. IIRC the 5820 is a 6c/12t CPU as well, it'd be interesting to see how it directly compares (but you'd have to run it in dual-channel mode to make it fair).

    Hey thanks for the comparison videos I'd really like some benchmark over on the content creation side rendering using 3DSmax and running Unity 3D looks like the 8700k might be the CPU to go for however in my use case for game content creation more cores might be more beneficial giving me a few extra bucks for a better GPU, I'd generally be running Photoshop, 3DSmax and Unity at the same time along with videos, Skype etc on a second monitor also be nice to see some Virtual Machine benchmarks if such things exist thanks again ;)

    Intel screwed their fans by making them buy a new chipset for a new cpu...its the same socket 1151...and now their saying that next year another new chipset will come out for new CPU's...Gotta love AMD for sticking with the same socket for what in the tech world, is a very long time

    • @a64738
      @a64738 6 років тому

      Intel are greedy assholes but still I buy their CPU`s because every time I have gone for AMD the last 20 years I have regretted it because of instability and in the end used more money then when I go for Intel because I needed to upgrade much more often.

    I was waiting for this Intel CPU before upgrading my pc. Coming from an i7 3770k oc to 4.7ghz it has been a very good and capable machine. But it is growing long in the tooth. Thanks for the review. I almost was going to go for the 7770k. If Ryzen had better clock speeds, then I would have gone with that. Pity threadripper didn't up the ante in that area.

    Observation:
    I don't think the Ryzen architecture is necessarily the inhibiting factor in it not being able to clock higher... it could be down to the manuf. process itself which is designed to work with lower clocks (not higher ones).
    Intel had how many revisions of 14nm process by now?
    AMD is technically running on a non-refined 14nm process... hence the clock limitations.
    I think it might be fairer to compare AMD's upcoming Ryzen + on 12nm to Intel's offerings as that manuf. process will probably include higher clock speeds with same or lower power draw.
    But yeah, Intel has the 'advantage' only because it can clock much higher.
    Plus, we don't have a lot of industry software that's optimized specifically for Ryzen's architecture... if we did, we might see a bigger performance difference in AMD's favor.
    Still, I can't help but think Intel is playing dirty here. They are forcing higher clock rates at the expense of power draw and unstable temperatures - not to mention incredibly poor cooling due to inferior thermal compound under the lid?
    De-lidding is a problematic process which can easily result in a non-functional CPU if done improperly.
    AMD did a good job with Ryzen in that regard to the point where de-lidding offers no benefits, but almost guarantees to result in a non-functional CPU.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 років тому

      Clock speed for Ryzen appears to be a combination of the architecture and the fabrication process both. Some changes can give higher performance at the same frequency but also limit the maximum frequency you can achieve given the same fab process (i.e. pipeline differences).

    • @Feyhua
      @Feyhua 6 років тому +1

      intel has been so powerful that so many applications work well with ryzen...
      zen+ will need to clock much higher if it is too live up to
      1. the expectation
      2. competition from cannon lake
