  • Today we look at some basics of landing the A320 NEO in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020!
    07:30 First Landing
    08:40 Landing Brief
    13:40 Second Landing
    14:35 Crosswind Landing
I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

I can’t for the life of me get the auto throttle to work properly outside of a pre-planned IFR flight plan landing, otherwise they just ignore me and stay in climb mode and over speed my flaps and make it impossible to follow a glide slope or just land without slamming it down at 190knots. Idk if I’m missing something or it’s just bugged still

      Something like:
At the ramp with electric power, beacon on
When APU is charged up and bleed is on, add the strobes, signaling your ready to start the engines. (I've read that during night time, these will stay off untill you're holding short of runway to not blind the ground crew/other pilots)
NAV and taxi goes on when you're being pushed out
Add landing lights when you're holding short of runway
Kill takeoff lights and landing lights at 10000ft
Turn them back on when you're back at 10000ft
Kill landing lights when exiting runway
This is what I've picked up from googling, and watching other simmers. It might not be 100% real, but I don't think it's toooo far off :)

@@95andyj he's actually made a video on this topic now but in case you haven't seen it here's a brief correction to some of your points:
when electric power is on you go NAV lights (on the airbus the logo light automatically comes on but on other aircraft you may have to turn this on if equipped depending on outside conditions and company SOP)
When you're about to push the aircraft or start the engines you turn on the beacon (and this stays on until your engines are shut down at your destination)
Taxi lights go on when the you are about to start taxiing out (and the ground crew is out of the way)
Depending on the lighting outside you may also consider using the runway turnoffs if the aircraft you're flying is equipped with them
Strobes come on whenever you are entering (or crossing) an active runway
Landing lights when entering an active runway or when cleared for takeoff (depends on company SOP)
The rest of your points are correct about the 10000 ft rule
Strobes off when you exit the runway at your destination (although you may have to turn them on again briefly if crossing an active runway)
Taxi light on for taxi into gate (but you typically turn them off as you pull into the gate so as to not blind the ground crew)
Beacon off when engines shut down
Wing lights are typically used to look for icing on the wing or for added visibility on the ground (or even in the air) but again depends on company SOP

If you haven’t made a video like this before, and if you have the time, I’d love to see a video where you go from a cold and dark start up to takeoff, explaining what every system means and does! Just to add, I nailed my first landing of the A320 in FS20 yesterday and it was largely thanks to watching this clip.
One thing I would like to see is how you manage a completely visual approach and landing with the A320 - at an airport with no ILS such as Inverness or maybe Queenstown in New Zealand. That is maybe the ultimate challenge for us armchair pilots as, while it's relatively easy to do in a prop plane, bringing in a heavy is a different ball game! (Probably overshoot and land at Inverness station!).

It makes me laugh how these kind of videos have 'for entertainment' disclaimers, because of course, youtube is the place to go to learn all you need for real world skills like baking bread, spray painting your car, or FLYING AN AIRLINER!
I think the disclaimer is funny but thats not taking anything away from your videos or others like it, they're great and I'm enjoying learning how to operate the A320 in FS thanks to videos like this

I have managed to sort out some of the issues with the autothrottle during flight and approach and certainly a lighter touch on the stick but my biggest problem is overspeed on take off.. never had this problem with the fsx aerosoft version.... after take off I almost immedietely need to power back after gear up ..get the flaps up and pitch to avoid stall as the power drops then control it until at safe height for autopilot. Also... great stuff once again... I love how it feels as though you have paused the sim in flight because you have so much time ..where as I am juggling plates....even when its paused, and if anyone wants a great book reference thats actually a fun read .. Mike Ray simulater and checkride for the airbus is great compliment to your fantastic tutorials.

I'd love to know more about transitioning from Cruise to Descent to Approach. When exactly do those phases start? What are the proper AP Settings? What are things to look out for?
I did a flight from Rome to Heathrow in the A320N earlier today and that portion was a combination mystery/fighting my own lack of knowledge which then led to fighting the plane and trying to keep on top of the in game ATC instruction (though I also know that the in game ATC is spotty at best)

    • @martindammable
      @martindammable 4 роки тому +1

If you open the navlog you'll probably see a point on the list called something like TIMEDSCNT. I don't know if that's your top of descent. I found that using the timer to check eta on waypoints was fairly accurate, so that maybe is how to do it. But with that ATC you might as well cancel your IFR plan at this point.

    • @95andyj
      @95andyj 4 роки тому

Depending on your altitude (FL300+) and the type of approach of your destination (some airports have these weird long approaches), 80nm away is a good point to start the decent. Adjust your rate of decent using the V/S rate :) Not sure if this is the "right" way of doing it, but it seems like a lot of simmers do it this way, me included :)

Some precision in terms if I may.
Rudder does not take out drift - it actually allows drift to develop. Rudder aligns the fuselage with the runway.
To avoid drift with the fuselage aligned with the runway lower the upwind wing; not necessary if drift after alignment is given little time to develop; and mostly avoided for aircraft with low slung engines.

Excellent video. I have no time in the Airbus IRL and have had a hard time in the AP disconnect transition on final. When I disconnect AP the aircraft feels very unstable and like the trim is running away. It’s as if full pressure rearwards on the stick just barely flares the nose at all. Results in awful landings. The only response that results in the ability to pull the nose up to flare out, is adding throttle.

@@dasheight203 Since it's a game/sim and you can fly it yourself in there. And these study level payware planes that you get function exactly as they would IRL. SO these videos are fine. Anyone can buy it.

Thanks again. Dont you think they overdid the turbulence model? Even with your small crosswind, the Airbus sim looks like your in a Cessna.

Brilliant! Another really helpful video. Thank you! Are you planning to do any on RNAV approaches and VOR DME approaches. I'm a bit confused by what they are.

Man great video! I was struggling to get a smooth landing, i was doing great but the last few feets before flare I would wooble all around and end up landing off center, and waaay into the runway

Yet again another great video! I think I have watched all of your MSFS2020 videos as well as your live Venice event earlier this week. They are all amazing and I have learned so much.
Do you think it would be possible to do a landing video where you would need to input the ILS frequency manually or way to tune the nav radios to a frequency and have the AP fly that ILS? I ran across an issue where the ILS freq that was inputed to the MCDU was not correct and for the life ofd me was not able to change the frequency to the correct one.

Your tutorials are a gold mine. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
[Edit] By the way, do you know if RNAV approaches work as expected in the FS20 Airbus ?

I started with the Cessna 152 in the tutorial and now I moved on to the Cessna 172, I can operate basic autopilot functions and do an ILS approach without any assists. But I couldn’t land the airbus or Boeing at all, I’m always short of the runway, too high, too fast, or slam the plane. I’ll try to master the Cessna 172 and hopefully one day I can move on to an airliner.

Yup smart way to learn, the a320 is easy to land tho
I recommend you to train on the landing challenges

Thanks again, great video. I experienced the unexpected roll to the left a few times myself. Unfortunately I lack the skill to correct for it, so most of the time I crash when it happens. I couldnt find the issue in the known bugs, so I reported it. Here's to hoping its considered enough of a priority to get it fixed soon.
