A320 NEO Icing explained with a Real Airbus Pilot in Microsoft Flight Simulator!

  • Join me as we look through the various Ice protection systems on the Airbus and how we might use them in Microsoft Flight Simulator!
I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss as well as the new MSFS2020 A320. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!
This video is intended for home entertainment only and does not reflect or represent any real world aircraft or airline procedures. It is for home flight simulator enthusiasts only and has no real world application.

Thanks for explaining the window anti-ice glitch as I've actually had a flight almost end because of that, if you're descending on AP and it happens the aircraft will begin to nosedive and overspeed very quickly.

I cant find a way to turn the icing effects off.."ridiculous" is the perfect description of the MSFS2020 icing effect.

I was very fortunate to sit alongside the Training Captain on a full scale simulator when he introduced an engine failure on take off from a very snowy Manchester Airport. The first officer was being put through his paces and the accompanying Captain suggested a reduction of power on the starboard engine with a hope to reduce the vibrations. It was incredibly realistic. The first officer was then asked what he wanted to do after the starboard engine had to be shut down because the vibrations did not reduce on throttle back. He suggested Manchester and asked for the weather which was pretty cold. It was at this time that he remembered that the EICAS indicated no wing anti ice available as this was (at the time) provided by the starboard engine. He then suggested diverting to Liverpool Airport and asked for the weather there. the Training Captain said that the weather was sunny and 23C :-) The first office made the right choice of course. I was allowed to take off and fly a circuit at Innsbruck when the training had been completed. It was an unforgettable experience.

I never press the deicing buttons in MSFS2020 when i fly the A320, all that rocking to the left and right should shake off any ice buildup 😁

The MSFS Icing bug (zero air speed on PFD) is @14:08 and self corrects @14:16. In "icing" conditions (i.e. flying through cloud at FL230) it repeats the cycle and in cruise the auto-throttle increases RPM when airspeed is zero, as you were descending (auto-throttle had commanded "THR IDLE"), you didn't get the loud audio cue that usually accompanies the icing bug (frozen pitot tube ?). Switching from Pitot Heating "AUTO" to "ON" fixes the issue.

I think its a bug and not really a heating issue but .. I could be wrong... but I've had the speed issue so so many times... it goes to 0 the plane dives down for a few seconds and then the speed is correctly detected again... I've always just put it down to bug since I've had it happen to me at very very random times.

Hi. 320 Sim Pilot. I love your videos and I wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge so we can have more realism in our home flight sim! I used to fly the PMDG 737 NGX and I am now in love with the A320 through your videos. It still lacks a bit on the new MSF2020 so I mainly fly VFR there but until it gets better, which simulator between P3Dv5 and Xplane and which A320 add-on would you recommend for a better immersion with the A320 ? Thank you and keep up the good work!

I ll comment that video a while after but first of all thank you for all those informations !
Even if this video is about the FBW I have a question about the Fenix :
Recently I was in icing conditions and my IAS just froze (with no ECAM warning) ! I didn t understood what was happening first and thought of a bug but I m pretty sure that it has to do with the icing conditions that I was in (the TAT was around -10°) but as you mentionned the probe heat is auto on the airbus so I really don t understand why that happened ? (by the way eng anti ice was on if that matters).
After that I disabled live weather and put a the weather in few clouds with a 37° temperature and the speed came back after a few second so it was very probably the ice.
Do you think the Fenix after 2 years since you did this video has the same issue with the probe heat that that needs to be ON in icing conditions ?
I d like to have your opinion about that ! 🙂

Are you in touch with the folks over at FlyByWire to consult on their A320 mod? I think that'd be a serious missed opportunity for them if you're not but I suppose they likely do have other pilots advising as well right? Anyway, the icing effects do "melt off" as you fly with the sun on the aircraft and out of those icing conditions. Personally I'm not fussed about the graphical representation of it as long as it behaves in a way that's more or less realistic anyway.
