Couple things. STAR stands for Standard Terminal Arrival Route. And with regards to the DH or MDA... The MDA is a barometric altitude. DH is a radar altitude. If you set MDA you're essentially setting the DH plus airport elevation. You usually use MDA. You use DH when doing a CATII or greater approach typically. The MDA is smoother as it is looking strictly at barometric altitude and not following the terrrain below. That altitude you were setting your DH from the FMS was the FAF altitude. Far too high for a missed approach altitude. If you want to use a standard missed approach altitude for all ILS's, 200' AGL is typical for a CAT I ILS. So, set your DH to 200'. Or, set your MDA to 200' plus airpot elevator and round up to the nearest 10'.
Jason Hurt When I say using an DA is ‘smoother’ I’m talking with regards to the countdown to the DA. With a DH, using the radar altimeter, the terrain can cause an erratic journey to the DH. When I flew in the airlines I remember CVG landing south, I think, there is a big change in terrain just prior to the runway. If you used DH for those runways you would go from 300’ above minimums to 800’ above minimums then BOOM minimums. You just don’t use DH unless you’re shooting a CAT II or greater approach. Also, the providers you’re talking about the non-precision approaches are called CANPA procedures. We did that in the airlines as well. They used something called a DDA. Since you’re such a pro I’m sure you know what all that means. With the advent of LPV approaches there isn’t a need for CANPA procedures anymore.
Jason Hurt I flew for a Delta Connection Cartier in the US for 7 years. I now fly a Citation XLS under part 91. Every single training program out there teaches to use the baro DA for minimums, not DH. The DH is a height above the ground number, obtained through the radar altimeter. The only approaches that use DH are CAT II and beyond. Every single airline carrier and training center teaches baro DA for a CAT I ILS.

Brilliant Tutorial. Very good landing! Thanks for the tutorial. Just bought MSFS last week and didn't have the chance yet to try the A320neo. Your video helps a lot in getting started 🙂
Great video! Another video where a student pilot was showing an ILS landing in a cockpit simulator, there was no need to wait for diamond in the glide slope indicator to touch the yellow line before turning on the approach button. As long as you are on correct approach and ILS captured, turn on the approach and the plane autopilot will automatically adjust no matter where the diamond is on the glide slope. You can also do a managed speed landing and the speed will be automatically adjusted by the autopilot, just need to adjust flaps and lower the gear during the approach.

Thanks for the tutorial. By the way, the whole time, I kept hearing an internal combustion engine, and could, for the life of me, figure out why I was hearing that, when you were flying a jet. Then, I remembered, I'd landed at a small airport, and there was a plane just sitting there, idling, the whole time. LOL Thanks for the video.
Plane took off again, because you need Thrust Idle at 30ft when you hear the plan shouting "RETARD" that means Thrust Idle or the Auto-thrust will spool up again.
Thank you very much! Your tutorials is in accurate time of need and exactly what we need to know, I'm complete new to this game. But I feel so confident after 5 days :) keep what you are doing
Its been ages since I flew the A320neo, and all going very wrong. And especially wrong in landing, so revisiting this for a few pointers on things I forgot has been helpful.
Hey dude, very good video! Just a little tip, use the CSTR button (constraints) as it helps a lot. By using it, you can easily keep track of what to do during the approach (very, very useful if you're not familiar with the area/new procedure), reducing the work overload.
I've tried a dozen different ILS approaches at a few different airports and could not find one that wasn't broken. Also, thank you for answering a question I had about when to turn on approach mode.
Try an ILS to Amsterdam Schiphol - EHAM.. I practice there from EGCC - Manchester Airport; but the return route ILS in to Manchester is broken, so I can't do the return leg yet..
Great clear instructions thanks! I've finally got the courage together to move onto the A320; Citation Longitude and CJ4 were my extremes, As you say, trial and error are great for learning. One thing about the Autopilot compared to CJ4/Others is that the buttons can be pressed or pulled/ managed-selected mode. Something I had no idea about until recently. Thanks again!
Thank you Drawyah, the Flight Factor A320 tutorials are too long and I just was looking for the ILS button sequence which you demonstrated very clearly.
Followed your tutorials but it kept going haywire, turns out I was listening to the AI ATC instructions! Turned them off and flew my plan perfectly, thanks Drawyah mate!
Not really sure what I’ve gotten myself into getting into this sim, I’m completely new to aviation and flight sim games and this is all a lot to take in! Nice video though
I would like to know how many times you have done that, land the plane. You have it text-book perfect. My car bumps more when I back out of the drive than that plane did on landing. Well done, make more and thank you.
I've been following your tutorials. I was able to start the plane, set up a plan from Atl to JFK. Everything went off without a hitch and I got to the last 40 miles to the runway. Somehow is was like 300 miles high, and I was too far to the right of the run way. Landing is probably the hardest.
Drawyah, love your videos. You’ve essentially taught me everything I know about flying IFR in this game. Any chance you could slip in go-around procedures in one of your videos? Experienced my first go-around at KJFK and literally had no idea what to do besides to set the TO/GA thrust, thanks!
well this video looks certainly helpful, yesterday i did a flight from Madrid to Heathrow but i did a really bad landing as i wasn’t aligned to the runway at all and also couldn’t see it until i was like 3km in front of it due to bad visibility
These tutorials have really helped me. So thank you very much fella. Albeit I am on Xbox series s so it’s even more of a pain. Was wondering if you could possibly do one one the beech king air at some point as this is the aircraft known for my local airfield with the a320 being too big for it. Cheers buddy.
@@Drawyah I’m certainly looking for it. It’s extremely difficult for a newbie like me. Currently tinkering and struggling to get departure route in and also via points to the flight plan rather than direct.
Heres a idea for a video. Go over how to set up yokes and keybinds. I cant set up my yoke to have rudder controll for example or I dont know how to use reverse thrust. Basically go over your settings would be such a help!!
I was so used to the zibo 737 having hundreds of hours on it, so it was very confusing for me to move to the A320 especially as it still doesn’t have some feature ( for example vnav). Your videos really helped me a lot.
Thank you, Im new to the 320 and this was helpful. If I do a star from world screen in the setup page will it go into the FCM or do I have to enter enroute?
Thank you for a great tutorial I was having problems trying to setup my landings. All other aspects of the flight were fine but this has really helped me. I've been waiting on ATC telling me to descend but kept finding I was too high when close to the airport. Think that is what I was doing wrong.
Are those runway taxi lights placed properly in Helsinki? I would have thought they would be farther toward the edge of the taxiway, but here they are actually on it. Seem easy to run over. Maybe they are accurate, but I"m not sure.
@drawyah every time I enter a STAR after getting the runway from ATC the plane reroutes to the last waypoint usually doing a 360 before moving onto the STAR. How do I stop this?
I believe the callouts upon touchdown for this aircraft is "Reversers green" and for Boeing, it is "Speedbrake Up, Reversers Normal" then at 60 Kts "Manual Braking"
Hello. Not sure what i'm doing wrong here. I've tried 2 flights in this sim, with the stock A320. Gatwick to Reykjavik and the return leg. Both times, when setting up the approach in the flight planner before the flight, I couldn't find a STAR that didn't have a base leg, before making you perform a final two turns to align with the runway. I notice in your approach here you are more or less "Straight in" from miles out. When I flew the first flight, the ILS would not intercept, I realised the course and frequency were not entered into the MCDU and then flew a manual approach. On the second leg, I made sure everything was set, QNH, temp, decision height, MDA, course and frequency were both set in the MCDU. On the return flight to Gatwick, I chose to use 26L to land on, setting 110.900 in the MCDU. Again, I had a base leg to complete before. On approach to the airport, I activated the "LS" switch, and it displayed the frequency for runway 08R, which of course has the same frequency. I turned it off and waited until final, which was about 7 miles out from the airport, before re-engaging the LS switch, and seeing the hollow diamonds come into view. I was below the glide at the time at just under 2,000 feet with approximately 6.5 miles to run. I waited until both diamonds came into view on the PFD, and pressed "LOC" followed by "APR". It captured the downward glide initially but didn't capture the horizontal localiser, I was only doing at this point about 150 kts indicated and was fully configured for landing. As it wouldn't line up with the runway despite having pressed LOC, then APR and AP1 having been set and remained on throughout the flight, I disengaged it as I noticed it wasn't performing the ILS landing, and once again performed a manual landing. If I recall, there is a maximum speed for intercept, Initially I thought it was about 150 kts, but then I'd have thought some larger jets may intercept at above this speed, and therefore that it may not be 150kts intercept max speed. The other thing I wasn't sure about .... do you have to wait for the diamonds to actually go fully pink/purple (and not hollow) before you press the APR button? Mine just stayed hollow diamonds but moved down and left/right. I've flown many ILS approaches without issue in previous sims, such as FSX and P3D. But for some reason I just can't get it to work in this one. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks for the video. Actually trying to land with ILS and its working well but 2 of 2 attempts ended with the plane landing to the left of the "drawn" runway. It happened at the airport of Madrid LEMD and Dubai OMDB. Did i miss something?
Nice landing and interesting video. Couple of things I would mention (more for new simmers per se) The 3 times rule is used by a lot of pilots to work out when and where to start your descent. Example here you were at 36 thousand feet, 3X36=118 so a lot of pilots would start descent at say 120 miles out. Other thing for new pilots to remember, a STAR doesn't always take you to the runway,. For instance in the UK afaik all stars end in a hold. And one final question for you Drawyah, is the trans alt for the UK a blanket 6000 feet ? because that hadn't used to be the case.
In the UK transition altitude is 3,000ft unless you depart from an extensive list of controller spaces (section 1.4) that covers most if not all major airports. www.aurora.nats.co.uk/htmlAIP/Publications/2019-03-28-AIRAC/html/eAIP/EG-ENR-1.7-en-GB.html
@@Drawyah Thanks for the answer, so I was correct, in that it isn't a blanket 6000. You suggested it was in the video which had me wondering, cheers for clearing that up.
Hi, I tried landing with this video, but I have a concern. When I program a route, it already picks a runway. Let's say I picked a runway and direction, I have my waypoints set up, and I'm approaching the airport. But I realize I can't put the direction I want in, only the opposite. With the waypoints set up I'd need to start making a lot of fast turns because my route was set up from another side. Is there a way to avoid it? Or to see what runways are currently in use?
Drawyah. I feel bad how many questions I've asked you lately but I thank you for responding to them. I have already asked this before but I think I will put it in better phrase now. I understand that SimBrief will not always provide a STAR or SID. You say that the STAR (and I believe SID) can be obtained from ATC as things may change. When you say this may be obtained from ATC, are you saying the AI ATC? Like the one that you talk to for pushback, catering, etc, or the ATC as like literal live ATC with real people on Vatsim or whatever. The one where I think I saw you do your Easy Jet full flight with Live ATC. Edit: Another question. I am airborne as I am typing this in the A320neo, but my speed is staying at 180kts and not increasing. My flaps are up, speedbreak is unarmed. I put "Selected air speed mode" and I put the speed to 280. I am at cruising altitude by the way. I have managed heading but I have selected speed on. Autothrottle is on, and flight director is on. Is this a bug or something wrong on my end? Tl;dr: STAR/SID is not always given. ATC can give you this. Is this real live ATC that can give this information, or can the AI ATC give this information as well.
I'd love to see you do an RNAV landing tutorial. I can land ILS with no problem, but RNAV in the A320 seems to go bizarro on me every time. Thanks for the content (and the group flight the other day!).
thx for the video. so arming the spoiler the way you did activates it as soon as the plane touches the ground ? of how much ? fully ? (we dont see the spoilers open in the video so im wondering) im struggling to prepare and use spoilers. the white ring up is all we have to do to arm them ?
@@Drawyah thanks for clarifying!. and about auto brakes i understood from other sources that 'MAX' is only for takeoff ? is it ? (for emergency take off abort situations ?) MID and LOW being for landing.
How do you set up reverse flaps for my Logitech quadrant? Do you Either "Hold Throttle Reverse Thrust" or "Toggle Throttle Reverse Thrust" on the 747 i bound Toggle Throttle Reverse Thrust and works but can’t see it working on the a320? Can you advise?
Love your videos! I have learned so much! I have a question, how do you set the throttle to idle using the keyboard and and how do you use the auto throttle when you land?

What do you do if a STAR is given in SimBrief but doesn't show up in the games FSM panel. Example. KBWI always gives me 33L, however that approach does not show up in the panel
Just did a flight in the a320 with live ATC. Was certainly interesting, but I didn't set up for the approach or landing correctly. I managed to get on the ILS, but that's the only part that went smoothly. Mostly cuz I couldn't figure out how to get the ATIS info in cruise, it wasn't coming up on the ATC menu
great video, I have a question. I'm going crazy looking for an answer. why does the plane swings left and right on cruise altitude? was hoping was the yaw damper since this allows the fuel to move around, but I see no options. Thank You.

What a gem on youtube i found today. Subed. Cheers mate
I'm glad you found this handy!
Its been ages since I flew the A320neo, and all going very wrong. And especially wrong in landing, so revisiting this for a few pointers on things I forgot has been helpful.
Glad you found the video handy in getting back to the neo!
Autopilot picks up the ILS and flys the correct heading and then always crashes into the ground well short of the runway
Thanks for the tutorials bro I'm good with all the Boeing aircrafts now it's time for Airbus
Thank you Drawyah, the Flight Factor A320 tutorials are too long and I just was looking for the ILS button sequence which you demonstrated very clearly.
Glad to hear this worked for you cross-platform! An Airbus is an Airbus at the end of the day. 😅
Thank you so much, mate. Cheers from Brazil!
Using this tutorial has made my final approach and landings so smooooth thanks for the video, great stuff🛬😊
Glad to hear that this has helped!
Best ILS tutorial ever.
Glad you found it useful!
Some great info in here. And nice landing!
Followed your tutorials but it kept going haywire, turns out I was listening to the AI ATC instructions! Turned them off and flew my plan perfectly, thanks Drawyah mate!
Glad to hear you got it all figured out, enjoy flying!
@@Drawyah Thanks mate, sure will!
Perfect, Perfect, Perfect... Thank you for a brilliant tutorial - V Sharman - London
I'm glad you found this helpful! ✈️
Thanks for making this now I can finally land the right way🤣
Not really sure what I’ve gotten myself into getting into this sim, I’m completely new to aviation and flight sim games and this is all a lot to take in! Nice video though
Flight simulation is one of those things you get better at with enough practice and repetition. The more you try, the better you will get.
I would like to know how many times you have done that, land the plane. You have it text-book perfect. My car bumps more when I back out of the drive than that plane did on landing. Well done, make more and thank you.
Too many times. 😅 The more you practice, the better you do get! Just keep at it.
Setting up the approach and landing takes time and practice, but after a few goes I'm sure you'll manage to get it going! ✈️
It'll take a couple of tried to get yourself up and running, just keep at it dude you'll get there!
DrawYah your a fantastic person for doing this god bless you mate
Thank you very much. do take care of yourself and I wish you many happy virtual flights!
Great tutorial! This video is EZ for me to understand!! Thanks sir, Now i know how to landing the A320! 😍😍 Sorry for bad english.. 😅
Glad that these videos are of help! I can certainly take a look at some of the GA craft if it's something people are looking for.
@@Drawyah I’m certainly looking for it. It’s extremely difficult for a newbie like me. Currently tinkering and struggling to get departure route in and also via points to the flight plan rather than direct.
This helped me so much Drawyah thank you!😊❤
You're very welcome!
TYSM. I made my first flight from Warsaw to Kair and everything worked well :p
I have never been this early. Also thanks for uploading this
Great videos and great charisma!! You got yourself another subscriber. Keep up the good work!
Love the A320 tutorials. Would you be able to create a video on taxiing once landed? I never know which way to go to get to my gate, thanks
Heres a idea for a video. Go over how to set up yokes and keybinds. I cant set up my yoke to have rudder controll for example or I dont know how to use reverse thrust. Basically go over your settings would be such a help!!
Great tutorial! Did a flight from EKCH to EFHK and your video really helped!
I'm glad it all made sense and worked!
The intro was so calm
I was so used to the zibo 737 having hundreds of hours on it, so it was very confusing for me to move to the A320 especially as it still doesn’t have some feature ( for example vnav). Your videos really helped me a lot.
Thank you, Im new to the 320 and this was helpful. If I do a star from world screen in the setup page will it go into the FCM or do I have to enter enroute?
If you set up a STAR in the menu, no need to set it up again.
Thank you for a great tutorial I was having problems trying to setup my landings. All other aspects of the flight were fine but this has really helped me.
I've been waiting on ATC telling me to descend but kept finding I was too high when close to the airport. Think that is what I was doing wrong.
Hey how come sometimes when i put the approach in it will send me back to the last way point?
Great video Love the way you explain the numbers on the MFD .
Which numbers are you looking for?
The ILS data I did not understand them till I watched your video. Great help thank you 👍@@Drawyah
Are those runway taxi lights placed properly in Helsinki? I would have thought they would be farther toward the edge of the taxiway, but here they are actually on it. Seem easy to run over. Maybe they are accurate, but I"m not sure.
Amazing tutorial! Hopefully I can get my aircraft down *safely* next time!
I wish you many happy virtual hours!
That depend's on each individual's operating manual and POH, which can be different.
EPIC contant mate, thank you for all the work and tutorials your doing for us! Really appreciate this buddy!
Great videos I need all the help I can get to set up the sim & try to figure out how to fly many of the AC in it. Also the Landing challenges are wild nicely done MS Team
I have autism (aspie) and don't learn very well but your videos are the best I've found to help me learn it. I'm 50 hrs into msfs2020 and only flown the tbm not dared fly the 320 yet 🤣
This gives me a lot joy to hear! Depending on how far on the Asperger's spectrum you are, learning difficulty does get harder and harder. The fact that you've managed to learn from these videos and ultimately get more enjoyment out of the simulator as a whole, I'm glad it's all working out! I wish you many happy virtual flights. 🙌
My Flight plan wont show a Approch code like yours-DIVA and mine Wont show it in the FMS
Some airports don't have approaches meaning you will need to vector yourself in.
Thank you so much you explained everything very clearly!
I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful!
honestly one of the best msfs videos out there. Would it have been the same if you used ATC?
Yep! All the same process.
@@Drawyah thanks! I'm fairly new to flight simming so your content has really helped me out. Do you have any videos on how to read taxiway signs or airport diagrams since I've been struggling with that bit
Very nice video, well explained! And nice landing also
Great explanation, brilliant video as always, keep it up 🤗
Thanks a lot .. this is very helpful . Only when and where did you configure the ILS heading and frequency ?
Frequency and heading is automatic when selecting a runway, no need to configure.
@@Drawyah oh I see .. Thanks a bunch
Brilliant Brilliant Drawyah, now i can land from your takeoff tutorial Lol! Could you please link the Weather site you use please, as i would like to fill in the weather page on the FMS(C).
Will MSFS2020 be getting Vnav do you know? And if yes, will that then control the decent much like the 737-800 in Xplane? Huge thanks.
I've added it not to the description, I use AllMetSat for my METAR.
www.allmetsat.com/
If I might add, using SIMTOOLKITPRO you have everything on hand at the same time
Is this the default a320 or flybywire
This is for the default A320.
thanks for the video. Actually trying to land with ILS and its working well but 2 of 2 attempts ended with the plane landing to the left of the "drawn" runway.
It happened at the airport of Madrid LEMD and Dubai OMDB. Did i miss something?
upd: landing well in San Francisco..I guess something wrong with the sceneries..
Butterrrr landing, very nice tutorial. Thanks.
that was very very helpful, love your videos and keep it up.

Don't select an arrival airport in the menu. If you do, it will automatically select it.
@@Drawyah thanks, appreciate the help and patience!
Thanks for the content (and the group flight the other day!).
thx for the video. so arming the spoiler the way you did activates it as soon as the plane touches the ground ? of how much ? fully ?
(we dont see the spoilers open in the video so im wondering)
im struggling to prepare and use spoilers. the white ring up is all we have to do to arm them ?
Arming the spoilers will extend them fully on touchdown right until you go below I believe 100kts.
@@Drawyah thanks for clarifying!. and about auto brakes i understood from other sources that 'MAX' is only for takeoff ? is it ? (for emergency take off abort situations ?) MID and LOW being for landing.
Max breaking is used on takeoff or exceptionally short runways.
My Warthog reverse indent is set to Hold Throttle Reverse Max.
Not everyone uses flight plans. How do you do it manually? Select the nav your using and it's frequency.
Love your videos! I have learned so much! I have a question, how do you set the throttle to idle using the keyboard and and how do you use the auto throttle when you land?
F1 to idle throttle, auto throttle you just leave throughout the flight until the RETARD call.
WTG Drawyah!
So the 4 letter code for airports in Europe starts with an e like EGLL does it stand for europe
Correct.
E = Europe
G = Great Britain
LL = London Heathrow
E stands for Northern Europe only.
A: Southwest Pacific
B: Greenland, Iceland & Kosovo
C: Canada
D: West Africa
E: Northern Europe (Germany southernmost country)
F-H: Africa
K: USA (except Alaska, Hawaii)
L: Southern Europe (Spain, France, Austria, etc)
And more
What do you do if a STAR is given in SimBrief but doesn't show up in the games FSM panel. Example. KBWI always gives me 33L, however that approach does not show up in the panel
To be fair, Washington Baltimore does have a 33L runway, the sim just doesn't show it. 😅
@@Drawyah Aw man hehe. Well Thank you
This guide is amazing, great video.. Subbed for quality..
Excellent Tutorial, Thank you
This was cool, would you give out your weather settings in the initial part
Live weather. I only use Live weather.
great video, I have a question. I'm going crazy looking for an answer. why does the plane swings left and right on cruise altitude? was hoping was the yaw damper since this allows the fuel to move around, but I see no options. Thank You.
