My son has Cruz, ended up replacing a lot of parts,. Oil seals on turbo tube,. Top of engine seal. Many of the new parts had been upgraded. Means Cruze is trying to keep up and realized they had a problem
I bought a 2015 in 2018 with 17k, it now has 101k and has been the most reliable car ive ever owned. I have had the water pump replaced under warranty otherwise nothing major. Change your oil often people buy a cheap car and dont pay to maintain it
Bought a 2012 turbo new, and bought a 2014 used later. Now both at about 107k miles. It is a DIY only car. If it had to go to the shop every time, BIG BUCKS! You forgot the plastic coolant outlet pipe. other then that you've done it all.
12 has the original turbo, 14 was done warranty at 55k miles. Do the intake fix kit on the forum for the PCV, test for boost leaks, etc. and it's a good car.
So yea after only one day we had a new check engine light before this video was even uploaded. What a piece of crap this car is! 🤦♂
They aren't that unreliable after you replace everything. 😆
On the bright side, they are fairly easy to work on for a modern car. 😀
And cheap.
This could be helpful, When you say “everything” what did you replace?
@@thomaspower221I had to rebuild my transmission at 85k miles . 5k$
Hope my sonic isn't like this already had to replace spark plugs at 54 k miles
@@AmericanRenaissanceMan how often was the fluid changed?
I just bought two Cruze's. A '15 and a '16. I'm glad I ran across this channel so I know what to look out for. I appreciate the time you put into making this video!
Yea I was going to do detailed videos fixing the issues like I do on all our project vehicles on the channel but filming makes everything take 10 times longer and my son needed this car fixed ASAP. Besides that we do nitrous and turbo V8 builds here so I didn’t think my regular audience would care about fixing a little Chevy econobox anyway. Lol.
Half of the parts are probably new already 😂
My 2013 Cruze was a great car for 8 years. In the last year, it has been costing thousands to fix. Now it's the turbo that blew and caused massive oil and coolant leaks. I put about $8,000 in it in the last year. I should have gotten rid of it before the turbo blew. Now I feel like I need to fix it so I can go shopping for a new car. I can't get anything for it as it is.
My son in laws 2015 was fine for a few years but after it started there was no end to the problems. Used to be Chevrolet's just stayed reliable. My 1991 and 1992 Lumina's my wife and I drove were good for over fifteen years and still were fine when we traded them in. That was GM in a nutshell. You NEVER worried about their drivetrains.
As a cruze owner trust me every time you fix something another thing will break down the best thing to do is to threw this thing to a scrap yard.
What year? Reliability of Cruze highly depends on the model year. The first generation from 2011-2014 were particularly bad.
2015 had very few major complaints
2016 was a horror show.
2017 significantly better.
2018 Good car.
2019 best model.
I am so glad you made this video. The 2012 Cruze Eco just hit 60k and the plastic water outlet broke, so now I am replacing the whole cooling system. It always smelled of antifreeze at 5k when it was new. The dealer could not find or fix the issue. That hose behind the turbo is a pain. Now because of you, I am going upgraded hose and going to shield the back of the turbo lines. Thank you!!
Nice vid! I’m a brokee and I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze 1.4 turbo, I need to find that Cruze community to help me fix the small issues it has now it’s not many visible ones beside dirty engine.
I had a 2011 Cruze, worst factory transmission programming I had ever experienced. I had to have a professional tuner re-tune it just to make it drivable.
Yea it seems like it shifts really erratic. I may have break out the laptop and work on that a bit.
I'm glad I've never owned an automatic, everytime I get in one I'm just like wtf is this thing doing right now 😅
I thought I was the only one who's having this issue, it just likes to shift at 2500rpm which annoys me too much..
Mines at the transmission shop right now.
My friend had one and had 2 motors put in under warranty and a turbo also. It was at least a stick
I believe it!
Great video! Very informative!! Unfortunately, my wife has a 2014 Cruze with only 107K miles and it's on it's 2nd Valve cover and I'm replacing the Intake Manifold this weekend because it's still having PVC issues. Best believe we're getting rid of this turd asap before I have to deal with a to-do-list as long as yours!!! Keep up the great content!!
I just got a 2014 6spd manual stick shift, thanks for posting this video. It really will help me when fixing it up.
Glad it helped
I doubt you'll see this, but how is it holding up after a year? I'm going to look at a '15 6 speed manual with the 1.8L tomorrow and would love to hear if the manuals are more reliable.
@@fingolfin9086not sure about the 1.8 as I have a 1.4 but I've had it since 2018 with no major issues, just do your maintenance
2018 Cruze, 76000 miles on the clock. Apart from a set of tires and oil changes, 0 issues. Gen 2 seems to be very solid. I do agree with you about turbos.
When the oil life monitor shows fifty per cent change the oil. You MUST do that. When you arrive at your destination, do not just shut the car off. Allow it to idle for a couple of minutes. When the car is cold especially in winter do not accelerate hard. The oil is not as warm and free flowing as it needs to be to circulate through that tiny oil feed line going to the turbo which over time causes damage to the turbo bearings. They use a lot of air so keep up with your air filter maintenance.
What year? I've got the 2014 LT. It's hands down the best car I've ever owned. Had this car for over 4 years. Had 34k when I got her. Up to 183k now.
Same I got a 2015 and have had it since 2018 with it being my most reliable car I've owned
@@Rancid_Ninja i just rolled over 200K a few days ago. I'm probably going to need new front struts pretty soon. Other than that she's going strong as hell. Those are original too. So not too bad for these Michigan roads!
@Rancid_Ninja how many cars have you owned lol?
@@jacobg6528 maybe 10, grand caravan, grand prix, f150, saturn sc2, Volkswagen mk3 jetta, mk3 golf, mk3 Jetta again, mk4 golf, Chevy lumina, some beater manual Nissan, Maxima I think.
I think people forget or don't care to do their maintenance on the Cruze cause it was a "cheap car" if you do your oil changes and actually look under the hood anything can last.
I also think that the later years 2014+ had some of the kinks that the earlier years were struggling with ironed out.
@Rancid_Ninja how can you maintain plastic parts. You gotta buy and replace. Oil changes are not gonna stop the heat from the snail. . Most engines now. Juuuunk. Running an engine to 200k in 5-10 years is significantly different than a engine ran to 200k+ over 20-30 years (how long cars should last)
Worst car I’ve owned, a lot of problems, I bought it new and had to sell it with only 40,000 miles in 6 years, now I have an old Japanese brand car and everything work fine, I just missed the smooth ride and cool design
Sorry to hear that
I have a 2014 cruze with 200k miles on it. I just replaced the Thermostat PCV for a aluminum one, the water pump, valve cover and few sensors.
Im about to change the timing chain before it causes major damages
@@MrLatinBeard you’re lucky what engine does it have mine was the 1.8 regular not turbo
@@Hashiramashultz 1.4 turbo! Never had a turbo failure. My maintenance are extremely rare to see now days. I do oil change and filter every 3,500 or 4k with Revanol full synthetic oil and ACDelco filters. My transmission fluid is changed every 35k miles with Revanol as well
I own a Chevy Cruze 2011 and do all my own repairs. I love it. Great car. Yes, I've done allot of work on it but it was easy. No complaints
Thanks for watching. Glad this video helped you out!
@@BadLuckGarage It did help. I got a few tid bits regarding the turbo. I may disagree regarding the difficulties. I was very happy when I replaced the turbo. I got a new one online for roughly 150 and it only took 2 hours to replace. Even fully loaded I still get close to 40 mpg with the turbo. Almost everything is easy to access. Compared to Ford repairs on this model are a dream. Currently at 239K miles. I noticed you don't have your water overflow modified. Its best to add a drain line to the over pressure of the reservoir that leads down so it doesn't eject coolant into 'bad places' that are much harder to clean and make the cab stink.
@@richardbogard2791 Thanks for watching. Glad this video helped you out!
Great video. My daughter has a buick with the same engine, and we are having some of the same problems, so thank you very much for the video
Very welcome
Been dealing with a 2012 Cruze with a weird problem. One day out of the blue it wasn’t registering any temperature and the AC wouldn’t work which is a normal issue from the research I did. I changed out both temp sensors and the thermostat because those were the main issues that could cause that. Well it kinda fixed the issue but not fully. It drives around town fine and the temp/AC works perfectly. The issue now is that when you get on the highway and hit the cruise control it goes right back to registering no temp and the AC shuts off. Of course unhooking the battery will reset it so now I just use the car to drive around town and don’t even get it on the highway/interstate anymore and carry a 10 mm wrench in the glovebox to reset the battery if I need to. If it wasn’t paid for I would get rid of it. By the way if anyone reading this has had this issue and figured it out let me know what you had to do. Thanks!
Unfortunately I love Gm vehicles.
We bought 3 chevy cruzes over the past few years and as my 3 girls got older, we gave each a car to comute to college.
Fortunately I am a retired mechanic, so I could repair them myself.
I watched your video from start to finish and almost everything in your video I have replaced except a turbo. (regular oil changes and full synthetic oil I think helped).
I was wondering while watching, if you were going to mention the pcv system that a lot of people miss diagnose and lol you did.
I had one that was leaking oil out of every seal and gasket.
I recomend the Dorman replacement intake manifold rather than oem.
I have replaced 2 and seem to work very well.
Thank you for your video.
Thanks for watching brother. Yea these things are constant maintenance seems like. I’ve already had to replace that oil feed line for him a second time since making this video a year ago. 🤦♂️
I own a 2012 Chevy Cruze LT, it is the most reliable car I've ever had, bought it brand new back in 2012.
Big difference, my Cruze was made by GM South Korea and it's a manual transmission, 1.6l 124Hp engine.
I'm from Europe and it's not the first time that someone is complaining about a US made Cruze.
If you paid attention to the video, I pointed out that 90% of the issues we had were related to the poor design of the turbocharger setup on these cars. So if you don’t have the turbocharged version, almost nothing in this video applies to you.
The transmission on my daughter’s Cruze went out with no warning, just stopped pulling going down the road. Turns out the transmission is a sealed unit, no filter to change, not even a dipstick to check the fluid level. Not a fan.
I figured as much. The wife asked me a couple days ago about the transmission and I told her I haven’t looked into it yet but most modern fwd cars are sealed units. You can change the fluid much like changing the fluid in the rear end(or the corvette), but you can’t get to the filter without removal.
Yeah mines went out , 5k$ rebuild smh
i have a 2015 Cruze,. The biggest issue I have had is with the PCV valve cover, it has been replaced twice ( under warranty), also a purge valve, Waterpump and thermostat...thanks for the info, I am going to check a few things you mentioned.
my turbo oil line has the shielding. I suspect the 2015 will have some improvements over the 2011. My son has a 2010 Cobalt, this is by far the worst Chevy I have ever worked on, before that I had a 2004 Cavalier the worst thing to go wrong with that was the console.
Cruze Kit v3. It's a kit some guy who owns a plastic moulding shop decided to put together for his cruze and wound up making an entire new company out of it because so many people wanted them. This guy remedied the shit engineering from GM with nothing more than plumbing parts from the hardware store, not even joking. Completely bypasses the issue altogether.
Google cruze kits. It won't take long to find. Version 3 is the one I have, and yes, fixed the PCV issue on mine and probably saved me another couple hundred in replacement parts.
I just inherited a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. It only has 6,800 miles on it. It has sat in a garage for about the past year. I will pick it up tomorrow and plan to drive it to my home 120 miles away. However, I will test drive it around the pickup town to see how she runs. I don't need this car. I'll most likely just use it as a Sunday driver car for maybe two years and then sell it as a low mileage car. Thank you for your video!
My partner and I both loved Chevrolet. He had always wanted a red Chevrolet Cruze RS, I was at the time driving a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt LT. From 50K miles to 90k the car wasn’t to bad! Good on gas and was decently comfortable. Then at 97k I started loosing coolant, but wasn’t leaking it. After replacing the head gasket, water pump, timing chain tensioner (they had timing chain issues and mine was rattling ) after all that it still lost coolant. I decided to trade it off for a 2009 Corolla! Have owned nothing but Toyotas ever sense. My partner after his dream of a Cruze was dashed by my awful experience with my car he started buying Subarus! My family owned tons of GM cars through the years but I was absolutely not buying another car from GM!
I wouldn’t base my opinion of a manufacturers entire inventory on the reliability of their bottom of the line econobox brother. The crux is quite literally Chevys “build it as cheaply as possible with the cheapest parts available” shitbox. That’s like going to a top shelf brewery, ordering a Natty Light that’s been sitting in the bartenders lunchbox for 5 years, and then saying “The beer here sucks! I’m never drinking here again.” 🤣
Partner? Just call him your boyfriend/husband, dude.

So. I am on the other end of the Cruze family. 2012 LS 1.8L 6MT that I purchased in 2016 at 63k miles. Currently at 171k and couldn't be happier with my car. I, however, did a TON of research before purchasing mine lol. I walked into my local Chevy dealership and asked, "How many manual cars (not trucks) do you have on the lot?" After looking at me funny, they said "Three. Two Cruzes and a Sonic." I asked if one of the Cruzes was an LS and they said, "Yes." I said, "I'll take it." It just so happened that it was Ice Blue Metallic and light blue is my favorite color.
When they sold it to me they replaced the flywheel, clutch, brakes and tires. After financing, the car was paid off in 2021 at $9,000. I traded in my '05 Chrysler Town and Country minivan for it and luckily since I stuck with Wells Fargo for the Cruze, they gave me outright value on the van ($4,000).
I'm in three Cruze groups. CruzeTalk.com, STL Cruze & Sonic and Illinois Cruzers. I had done tons of reading on CruzeTalk before I found 'Veronica' so I knew to steer away from the turbo variant. I feel so bad for the folks that have had so many problems with the 1.4Ts and the automatic slushboxes.
TL;DR:
I love my 2012 1.8L 6MT. In 6 years and 108,000 miles, the only things outside of routine maintenance that I've had to replace are the timing belt, water pump (wasn't even leaking), trans and coolant flush at 100k, valve cover gasket and the igntion coil assembly. My clutch is just now starting to slip a little bit, luckily I have a flywheel and clutch collecting dust in the garage lol.
The only modifications that I've made are 1LT wheels, Kenwood KDC-HD262U, Audiopipe APCL3002, 2x Rockford Fosgate R2D4s in a sealed Atrend box, Stinger 4ga wiring, big 3 and an Autocraft Platinum AGM battery. Voltage rarely drops below 13.9V. I've hit 141.3dB @ 52Hz.
Craze’s have auto clubs? You guys must be the most boring bald ass white guys around.
Welcome to chevy shit box 101. I work on these cars all the time. NEVER...REPEAT NEVER....BUY A GM 1.4L
We definitely learned our lesson!
What about the 1.8
With a manual
@jaylonallen8423 my wife has a cruze. With 1.8L has 250k on odometer. Been good to her
Don't give up, if you compare all the internal components, internal to the block. You will find the pistons, crankshaft, piston rods, valves are well built. At least compared to the "best" subcompact Honda Fit. It's all the damn accessories that are POS. Turbo charger, sensors, hoses, thermostat etc. What is the milage on this car? This car is made for 100,000 miles only. And only if well maintained.
My sons been driving this car for over a year now since this video was made and it’s actually been pretty good to him. Of course that was after I replaced over a thousand dollars worth of parts and did what would have been thousands in labor.
There's updated thermostat houses that are aluminum now. My issue is that I haven't had a thermostat installed on one of these motors that lasted more than 3 days before never opening back up again.
Brutal! probably not driven hard enough lol I have a 2013 and its cost me less then $400 in repairs in 3 years. Coolant tank, oil line, thermostat, coolant outlet pipe, and a battery lol
Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped you out!
I own a cruze as well, and you are spot-on with your assessment...complete POS. GM should be embarrassed to employ engineers who design something like that.
GM sold off the Opel division, which designed all this crap. It is all designed to get high fuel mileage, and max performance out of a small displacement. This car would have been a nice car to lease, but not a long-term buy.
Those corporate psychopaths are proud of how many ways they screw people.
They should be outa business. If we had real capitalism, they would be.
They should be tar & feathered
@@thomaspower221 Interesting. Didn't know this. And makes sense because of the pressure in 2010 to overhaul lineups to comply with CAFE standards.
I have a 15 sonic. One of the lifters failed and I ended up putting a full set of lifters in plus rocker arms. Set off the knock sensor too. On the good side, the engine runs much better. I never thought I would have to change lifters at 48000 miles
Well, the good news is your plastic timing chain tensioners will probably fail around 120-150k miles which will grenade the engine. ;)

Still have original brakes and two original tires. Have to keep it as no one will by a used standard now. At 12 years I'm afraid to take it on a long trip. Must agree on staying away from turbos🤗
From what I’ve heard the NA Ats seem to be pretty reliable. As I explained in video, almost everything wrong with this car has to do with it being turbocharged and the shitty engineering surrounding that.
Two years later, does your son still have the Cruze? I've been looking for a cheap second hand car and I've found every other car for sale is a Cruze. All I can say is thank god for videos like this! 👍😊🇦🇺
Yes he’s still got it and I’ve had to do even more repairs since this video was made. Some for the second or third time like the turbo oil feed line which I’ve replaced 3 times now. The reason you see so many for sale is because people get rid of them as soon as they can afford something better. The reason people buy them is simply because they’re cheaper than most anything else out there. My son intends to trade his in as soon as he finishes college and gets a full time job.
@@BadLuckGarage The number of Cruzes I've seen for sale is unbelievable, relative to the number I see actually on the roads. I'll definitely avoid! Appreciate you mate 👍😊🇦🇺

Thank You...great vid. I spend my life trying to figure out why no engine codes, but wants to run at 230 temp and smell like oil burning. I changed the oil intake to the turbo myself, had the coolent system gone over twice at the shop. I don't trust this thing.

Take for example a buick lessbre, 2004 operating temp is about 190 degree F and lasts a lifetime. Toyota Corolla, 2003 operating tenp about 177 degree F, lasts a lifetime.
That car gave you fits. Good to see you have it up and running again. On a good note , it has a turbo
Yea but it’s already triggered a new check engine light after only one day of driving. 🤦🏼♂️
I think the coolant system integration is just crazy for one, because when the heater, core per se hoses or inlet outlet tubes fail, you can’t bypass the bloody system like you could on a typical car because the heater hoses are integrated in with the coolant system. And also the worst engine combination is the 1.4 turbo if you want to get a cruze run away from the turbo 1.4 L get a 1.8 or just get a 1.4 with no turbo just stay away from the turbos you’ll be replacing that bad boy more than you’ll change your oil sometimes.
Thanks for watching. Glad this video helped you out!
buy a good brand cartridge or a upgraded turbo...
The oil supply for the turbo is under the heat shield for the exhaust manifold, which causes the oil to bake inside of it and plug it up. Replace it regularly and you shouldn't have an issue.
I have a 2012 1.4 93,000 miles. I to checked that oil feed line on mine last summer and it's clear. O-rings can't go bad on that tube and leak oil. I've learned a lot since joining a Chevy Cruze group on Facebook.

Mine is just now beginning to have problems at 200k miles. Only general maintenance and it’s a 2015 Cruze ltz great car unfortunately I hit an unavoidable object on the expressway which has screwed up the Mai computer and caused oil and coolant leaks. 😭
Not a fan of the Cruze either. The Cobalt was a better car and the Cavalier was better than the Cobalt. My wife went thru 3 different Cavaliers and Sunfire over the years. A 94 4dr Cav, 02 Sunfire and a nice little 01 z24 5speed. I bought my oldest daughter a 06 Cobalt with 135k miles and she's drove the wheels off of it. Only 1set of tires brake pads and a starter.
I had a 2000s z24 manual trans back in the day when it was new. Loved that car as a daily. Never had any issues with it. We are looking at picking up a 2018 Chevy Cruz LS this weekend for our daughter. 66K miles and two owners. Did GM get these problems ironed out by this year model? I have read reviews and info online that 2017 and 2018 are good years for the Cruz. Actually anything 2015 and newer?
First video iv ever seen of yours. Great video !! An actual mechanic. Not a technician. Thank you for the information!! Seems the point youve made flew over a lot of peoples heads in the comments.
Yea the majority of the comments are from people who obviously weren’t paying attention. So if you don’t have the turbocharged version, almost nothing in this video applies to you.
Just put another motor in my 2011 Cruze it’s been nothing but problems since I got the car used… so I definitely feel your pain!!!
i had bought a new 12 cruze,i had a hunch that the turbo could be trouble down the road.Bought the 1.8 non turbo.i was lucky! It was a ok car.Playing it safe now with a 07 toyota yaris, amazing reliabilty!
Plastic cooling system parts and a turbo to add more heat to the engine compartment to dry them out to the point they become brittle and crack leaving you on the side of the road with an overheated engine.
I lost my mind (wasn't a car guy) and bought a driving school five years ago. It came with two 2nd gen 1.8 Cruzes and a 1.4. Since then I've added four, and three were totalled (other drivers' fault every time). The four current ones, three 1.4s and one of the original 1.8s, are all at around 150k miles. I wouldn't want one for my personal car, wouldn't recommend them to anyone, but they're great for a driving school. They're relatively cheap, plentiful, not hard to work on for a mid 50s noob like me, and parts are easy to find. 🤣 The instructors like them because they're fairly comfortable and feel solid. They'll all be out while the Corollas sit. It's just that the engines are pieces of shit. Coolant leaks are normal. Emissions sensors always setting codes. Transmission in one is getting rough. I order evap canisters in bulk. But these cars each do 30-40k hard miles a year teaching kids how to drive. They suck in a lot of ways but they're okay for what we do.
My son owned one for three years. He had to replace the valve cover twice because of the PCV is made into the cover and isn’t serviceable. That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.
Yea these cars are plagued with issues. Really wish I would have googled it before we bought it.
The intake is a recall ...free replacement... have the letter from GM in glovebox
Yes the gen 1 is bad. Good video though just as an aside I have the gen 2 a 2017 with 130k on the clock now outside of a short block I have a new cylinder head piston kit water pump alternator a/c compressor new intercooler almost every sensor that you could think of ready for anything so far an o2 sensor and turbo replaced at 100k which I did myself
Idk I have a 1.8 manual Cruze and it runs really good for me over the years never really had a problem with it
The video: Some people have shrimp allergies.
You: I’ve been eating steak for years and never had a problem with it.
Lmao
I did all that I'm losing coolant but it's not anything on the ground can you are anyone tell me where is it going no white smoke or oil mix on the spark plugs
Hope my sonic turbo isnt like this
I got the car back in September of last year the check engine light came on for my spark plugs replace those it came back on due to a dirty maf sensor cleaned the maf sensor now its not having any problems also when my spark plugs were bad i only had 200 miles of gas to use now its over 300 miles of gas on a full tank
I had a 2014 Chevy Cruz LT had to replace the turbo charger 2 times and had to repair the same thing 2 times. Biggest mistake I ever made buying a Cruze. I have made the decision never to purchase any American made automobile again. We now have 2 Nissan vehicles one with 190000 miles still runs great the Chevy only had just over 100000 miles
I have 2016 bought brand new,now 280K mileage! I spend 6K in the past years for turbocharger 2 times , all related to air system …
I paid like $17k or $18k for my Cruze and about $55k for my 2019 F150 and I have already replaced more parts on my F150 than my Cruze. Several issues with my F150, luckily I bought an extended warranty that covered electrical. My Cruze, well I have to fix PCV like just about everyone else.
Yea the newer F150s are pieces of shit as well. We have them as company vehicles and they spend as much time in the shop as they do on the road. My current company vehicle is a 2022 F-150 with only 28,000 miles and so far it’s been in for repairs on 5 separate occasions. Transmission shift issues from day one. Infotainment glitches, collision warning system went haywire and wouldn’t stop activating, drivers door latch would latch(that was at around 4,000 miles and I had to drive it to the dealer with a ratchet strap holding the door shut. Absolutely no way I would pay money for one of these newer Ford trucks. I’m already pissed that I have to park a Ford in my driveway, but glad as hell I’m not the one paying for it.
If your running highway speed for a long time, down just shut the engine off with a turbo. The hot turbo will cook that oil at the turbo. Let if run before you shut it off.
GM bought Saab to get the turbo technology, which is the caddy 2.0 T. I have a 2004 saab original turbo no issues for 18 years. From day one Saab (sticker on car) must use mobil one oil. On my 2015 cruze which we have owned for 7 years only mobil one ,no issues , I had spring in coil 4 go replaced spring and plug and front pads
Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped you out!
Small displacement turbo engines are no good.
My 2016 malibu with a very similar engine had issues right out of the gate.
I thumbed up 👍this video. However, I feel bad about your video. 1. How much did you pay? 2. What's a better car for the money? I share your anti-turbo stock feelings. But if we baby them we might keep it running. Thanks for keeping comments open. Thumbs up for that!
I bought 2013 1.8l last year drove it was 80k now its almost 110k using it for pizza delivery didn’t had single issue since bought what you think should i change it now or keep using it
If you paid attention to the video, I pointed out that 90% of the issues we had were related to the poor design of the turbocharger setup on these cars. So if you don’t have the turbocharged version, almost nothing in this video applies to you.
How many miles did this car when you bought it? We just bought one, watching your video makes me realize I might have made a huge mistake.
trade it in while u can
@@evansdarien5125 it's gone now, it was the recipient of a drive by and has over 30 bullet holes.
LOVE my '16 (last gen) Cruze! Your Cruze looks like the earlier gen.
I have one in Sri Lanka. Not a 1.4 or 1.8 gas(petrol), but a 2.0 diesel from 2011. Has a VM Motori engine. It is reliable; has good torque (241 lb-ft), but awful power(148HP), even for a 2.0D. It is a large engine size and car for the standards in our country, people also like the power output. But it takes 10 seconds to reach 60 mph(100kmph). Has the 6T45 trans, it shifts firmly sometimes. Mine is a fairly comfortable and reliable car, but the transmission and power is the biggest let down.
My car is somewhat heavy, in 1510kg. When the 2.0D struggles to pull it, no wonder the 1.4 is a crappy engine. Most of it is plastic, except the internals, block and the head. The 2.0's most parts are made out of aluminum or metal. Glad I didn't got the 1.4T engine. Even the 2.0D gets 47 MPG highway. Thank you for making other buyers aware of the problems with examples.
NEVER buy the first generation of any car model, ever. I have a 2018, it's titties, with zero issues.
Completely different generation. From what I understand GM addressed a lot of the issues from the Gen 1 when designing the gen2.
Get ready to change the water cross over valve, bottom temp sensor on bottom left side of radiator, maybe coolant recovery tank
Hello @davidlangley2722 ! Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped you out!
The Cruze also has issues with the electronic steering rack.
I had a brand new 2011 Cruze 2LT. Within 8 months, I had to get rid of it because it kept stalling from a dead stop! The car had a 1.4l with a turbo. Also the car would jerk constantly because of the CVT transmission. When I took the car to the dealership for the first time because of these issues, they “tried” to fix the problems. The second time, they refused it. So, I went to the BBB and filed a complaint. I was hoping to get my money and declare the car a lemon. GM offered me $500 rebate, and I had to keep the car. I told them forget that! Sold it, and I got a different car. A full sized sedan! Also, the Cruze had very bad blind spots because of the thick “A” pillar and “B” pillar. There were times that I had to stick my head out to see if there were any cars in my blind spots. The cabin was too small. I’m only 5’10” and about 220lbs. The center consul was nothing but a 1”X1”X1” plastic foam that my elbow keep slipping off. Seeing these videos about the Cruze, I’m glad that I got rid of it!
It didn't have a cvt transmission lol would of been a 6 speed automatic or manual
Agreed, my 2013 Cruze is a piece of crap. Bought it brand new. At 31,000 km the rear main seal failed. Luckily it was under warranty. Now at 65,000km the rear main seal is leaking again. Also a coolant leak and oil cooler leak .Everything that can leak on this car is! Always changed the oil and took good care of the car. Never again will I buy a GM car.
Jesus gave me my 2012 Chevy Cruze 1.8 and its never been down
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I recently bought a chevy cruze 2016 for 6900 at a dealership and from the first day I had a overheated idle engine something (what ever ) I returned to be fix they changed the crank reservoir and a hose, collected it 2 days after ,20 minutes later same problem now I have to return it to be fixed ,i am so pissed
I’m not surprised. After everything I replaced on this car, 2 weeks later it sprung another coolant leak and left my son stranded. I needed up having to replace some weird coolant manifold in a parking lot. I will say that it’s been a good car since then (knock on wood) and hasn’t had anymore issues since then. Although I know the turbocharger hotside is cracked and I will have to replace the turbo at some point.
Reluctant owner of 2016 LT with a 1.4 Turbo. Runs hot even with new coolant. Horrible transmission. Regretting financing such a wreck.
So if you want a turbo daily, turbo ls truck or older car of some kind huh?
I don’t like turbos on a daily driver period. After project Steppinwolf I swore I’d never turbo another daily.
What do you think about a used 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8lt with 43K miles for 7.4K USD? Is it worth taking the deal for a daily driver car despite their issues?
I would assume the bone turbo variant would probably be a pretty decent gas sipper. I can’t really tell you how much it’s worth, that will depend on your area but with milage that low I would think that would be a pretty decent deal.
@@BadLuckGarage I grabbed a 2013 lt 1.4 turbo everything checked out good I just need front brakes and spark plugs and coilpack.. I’m hoping it stops the one jerk I get once in awhile during like the first 20 mins of driving the mechanics think it jus a tune up
Simple answer, no. Stay away from GM, Pat the extra cash for a Toyota.
No don’t do it . Get a Toyota Honda or Prius
I've had my Cruze for 3 years. Started out with 60k miles. As soon as it hit the 80k mark, all this crap, plus MORE, startrd to fail. I have replaced 2 thermostats, a water pump, all the coolant lines, that turbo oil line, the valve cover twice, the oil pressure sensore, the evap cannister line, and now needs an oil pump. It's only at 90k now. A new thing went wrong every month like clockwork when the issues started. Truly engineered to fail. A real POS! I keep saying I'm going to sell it, but then something else goes wrong and I don't want to pawn this thing off on someone else with any issues. Never thought I'd be longing for a Toyota Camry. 300k cars with just oil changes. Smh!
Convinced my friend to sell his peace
Tt5t
I wish I would have found this video before buying a Chevy Sonic. It had the same 1.4 L Turbo..less than a month of purchasing the thing the turbo failed leaking oil directly into the catalytic converter which of course caused that to fail. I couldn’t fix one and not the other so that would have been a $2100 repair!!. Not long after that, the timing chain started rattling meaning that was on its way out as well. That would have been another $1,000 repair. I said screw it. I only paid 2,000 for the car. I ended up just junking the thing. It seems like it could have been a decent car if it didn’t have so many issues. It drove very smooth.
I bought a 2012 Cruze back in 2016 with 60k for $11k. It drove good for 30k miles over 2 years. Then all hell broke loose and the engine blew. I bought a used engine on eBay, had a high school mechanic class swap it out for cheap. Then took it to a reputable garage to fix a few things installed wrong to clear engine light. Also, charged the a/c since it would last about 2 weeks and put it up on craigslist for $4,900 cash and sold it in two days. Total cost to get running… $1900. Good riddance. I guess I came out alright… all things considered.
I'm sorry you bought one of these... wish you luck! The water pump on mine went out at 70k miles, the water reservoir was able to stay at halt full until it was repaired, BUT with just that leak alone, it was enough to overheat the engine and warp the head gasket. Now my car starts up rough and just about dies before it idles smooth and then runs fine. To fix the problem I was told by two mechanics that they won't work on a turbo engine, they'll replace the engine for 7k though to fix the problem. What car has the water pump going out at 70k miles? A POS, that's what. And what car overheats with a half full water pump that leaks a little? a BIG POS, that's what. I will never buy another chevy again.
My spark plugs in my chevy sonic went out at 54k miles
had a 14 sonic turbo for a while and just take that heat shield off. lets things back there stay alot cooler.
I’ve heard the ones without the turbo are not bad so I’ve heard let me know what you think .
If you paid attention to the video, I pointed out that 90% of the issues we had were related to the poor design of the turbocharger setup on these cars. So if you don’t have the turbocharged version, almost nothing in this video applies to you.
@ okay well I was trying just to ask question . But I guessing you’re not going to be nice in your reply okay .
@@scottmcnabb-m6d I answered your question very directly. If you see being direct as being “not nice” then this probably isn’t the channel for you.
This engine is a German design, thus the need for e-torx. It has much more in common with German cars like Volkswagen than it does with an American Chevy 6 cyl, or small block chevy. There is a whole lot of plastic under the hood, and it is all made in Germany. When it is new, from say 0 to 80,000 miles on the odometer, it is a nice little car, but after 80-100k, nothing but a diagnostic nightmare.
Yea that definitely explains why it’s such a piece of shit and falling apart after 100k miles. 🤣🤣🤣
@@BadLuckGarage I should’ve sold mine back then. I have 160k now. The problem is I do kind of like the idea of it. It is extremely economical, and that darn turbo gives it a little bit pep off the line as well. I have the six speed manual. Best of both worlds for a small car if it would just be easier to work on.
@@BadLuckGarageplastic, turbos and shoody parts are bad news.🤗
@@ricgunn1439 On all the other cars in this channel the turbos ARE the shoddy parts. 🤣
Yes it's an Opel designed engine, was also fitted to some Vauxhalls in the UK. Since GM pulled out of Europe all Opels & Vauxhalls are now really Peugeots.
I can't believe they stuck the oil cooler above the cat and behind the turbo.. This must be one of the worst engineered cars ever. The average owner trying to sort this mess out would be seriously SOL.
My feelings exactly.
Worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. I have had the 2015 ltz rs model for a year and a half which this trim comes with all the gadgets and has a very nice interior and exterior. But that’s it. That’s all that’s good about it. Ive had countless coolant leaks causing overheating leaving me stranded 3 different times, replaced O2 sensors twice, temp gauge twice, cat converter on the first and second engine, water pump on the first and second engine. Reason for engine replacement was my head gaskets kept blowing out on the first engine so after two head gasket repairs my mechanic advise me to just replace the motor since I had a full coverage warranty with only a $50 deductible for each shop visit. New used motor had 60k miles. Immediately had coolant leaks and had to get another water pump. My engine is currently running a PO420 and a PO171. Had fuel injectors and cat replaced but the code didn’t go away. Assuming the O2 sensors went bad but haven’t had time to replace them. I don’t even know if I will. I’m so sick of it I don’t care anymore. No human being has ever had the ability to make me as angry as this piece of garbage. Buying a full coverage warranty has seriously been the best decision I have ever made for myself saving me thousands and thousands of dollars. Unfortunately that decision was also paired with my worst decision. Buying this car.
Thank you for the video very informative
Glad it was helpful!
DO NOT FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL IN THIS CAR. It will bog down and say the heck with you. He does not know how to drive a car that is electronically controlled with a turbo. If you hold the pedal down about 15%, this car's turbo will spool up and take off and is fast. You do not floor the gas pedal. I do appreciate the turbo explanation because I do not like turbos. Too much maintenance. Also the other tips are helpful. The car is fun and drives amazingly smooth. The repairs are mostly easy but annoying to have repeated issues.
Thanks for the laugh.
I have a 13 cruze and its a piece of crap. I have replaced the serpentine belt twice there is a bolt head that keeps chewing it up and no shop can find it just keep replacing it. I have put 3 valve covers and gaskets on. I have replaced both coil packs. I have replaced my alternator. Water intake and hoses. Reservoir twice. Thermostat twice. I wish I would have never bought this car but can't afford a payment oh and dont forget about the throttle body position sensor under the hood and on the gas pedal. Honestly they are not very safe to drive once you get the stability track control warning and low power mode. You can be driving 60 all of a sudden warning lights go on your car immediately slows down to 5 mph and that is very unsafe if a kid doesn't know how to handle that
They were cheap cars new, its to be expected. I bought a 2011 for 15k new
Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped you out!
Bought mine in 🇨🇦 22k small $. No turbo or auto. Lordstown is closed down. Why??
I bought a new 2016 cruze for $11,000. At the time they had some good rebates plus I had $3,500 off from a GM card. I have 125,000 miles on the car and no engine or transmission issues(yet)😊
I have a 2013 cruze and nothing but problems .... same problems as you had with your car and then sum
Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped you out!
As a owner of a 2012 chevy lemon 🍋 i second that!!
MAN!!, you said a crockpot full, i have one of these things, THE SHIT THAT WOULD'NT FLUSH.😳
Hey, I got a Cruze, how can I contact you
The 1.8L Cruze and my 6.0L 2500hd isn’t any better. They are our LAST GM vehicles. Our 2015 Toyota Camry has 170K with ONE ☝️ issue…………A Battery!
Cool video. You should have gotten your son a used Toyota Corolla, ultra reliable and well made
Just an FYI ZZP is an amazing company that specializes in these vehicles and several others. They can make your headache go away
We’ve dealt with zzp on some of the other project cars on this channel. I’m aware they make a few upgrade parts for these cars but I really have no interest in modifying something so slow. In general if it’s not making over 500hp, it’s an econobox daily driver over here. 🤣
How many miles are on this repair car?
