I bought a 2012 Cruze this morning with 196k miles. It has a fully overhauled engine, new turbo and new gaskets all around. I spend 3 hours cleaning it with a DIY cleaning solution. What a difference. The interior looks great now. Tomorrow is oil-change day. I was amazed to get 45-50 mpg on flat land at 58-59 mph. So far I am loving this and I am trying to learn as much as I can about the Cruze. This is my daughter's first official car.
196k is really high, hopefully you got a really good price. Bought mine with 17k now at 92k with only a few minor issues but I suspect the majority of issues will start around 120-150k
@@illdrumatik391 serpentine belt and tensioner, maybe water pump if it hasn't been already, mine went out around 80k. Spark plugs and coil pack if they haven't been changed. Then just whatever is leaking typical spots would be the turbo oil intake line and the water outlet. Inspect the intake manifold to make sure it still has the orange check valve too
@@illdrumatik391 not sure on AC the system probably has a leak somewhere if you add refrigerant it might work again but if there is a leak it will just leak out, I do a lot of my own work but AC is not my specialty I would take it to a shop if it were my car
@@illdrumatik391 my car has only leaked once when the water pump went out, but I've maintained my vehicle a lot better than most other that bought this economy class car. Buy one with low miles or don't buy one at all IMO
Got one of these. Definitely has its flaws, but at 107,000 miles, she's still ticking along smooth and strong. Had to change the AC compressor. If you don't keep up with maintenance though it's real easy to kill the engine.
I’ve driven my 2014 Chevy Cruze for the last 6 years. I’m a Chevy dealer technician so I do the work myself with all of GM’s bulletins, engineering information, and service information at my disposal. Never broken down or had serious issues, just oil/coolant leaks and preventive maintenance. Front crank oil seal, valve cover, and intake manifold (pcv valve internal to manifold failure causes front seal and valve cover diaphragm to blow out), oil cooler seals (cooler is fully serviceable), camshaft actuator solenoid seals, front cover gasket, oil pan reseal (sealant) were all oil leaks that I fixed. Coolant reservoir, both turbo coolant pipes (replace both at the same time), water pump, water outlet housing (what this guy called the thermostat housing-he’s wrong, thermostat attaches to the after pump), and coolant reservoir all leaked coolant, all fixed. No suspension, no brakes (yet), no AC, no mechanical engine or transmission failure. The Cruze can be a great car if you are good to it. I’ll take this thing across the country and back with no worries!
Good day Am having issues with my 2013 Chevy cruze 2.0 lt. The diesel pump valve does not open to let fuel go through to common rail. (leading to low fuel pressure on common rail) Please assist
I've had a 2014 cruze for less than 8 months. Two days ago I went to leave and it was slamming in gear, in limp mode. It won't go over 25 and is giving transmission control module warnings, power steering and-code u0101. I can't drive it and even if I tried, the speed limit anyway I go is 55mph for 20 minutes basically the whole way from my home. I have to get it fixed asap. As of right now I have no way to work so I'm not working. I have a daughter to take care of. I have to figure this out. Does anyone know how to fix it quickly? Or at least get it out of limp mode so I can drive it?
My sister in law got a 2013 Cruze from a friend who had to put his mom in a nursing home.In March of 2020 when we gave it to my daughter it only had 33,000 miles on it.So far in just over a year having it the car has been trouble free.4 new tires and new wiper blades and that’s it.Keep my fingers crossed!
They just did a recall on several items. If it’s under 120k miles they’ll take care of it. I got a new turbo, water pump, engine cover and who knows what else. It feels brand new again. ❤️
I bought a Cruze limited for $15k. Had way more features and was much cheaper than a new or used Corolla. I have had a good run: had the camshaft cover replaced (free) & just had the water pump/thermostat/tensioner/belt replaced for $500. I’ll take it.
I appreciate your honesty. I'm buying one tomorrow, a 2015 LT.I'm glad that the salesman allowed me to take the car to my mechanic for a diagnostic before buying it. The water pump and the thermostat are being replaced at no cost to me. I could smell that antifreeze fishy smell.
@@lxveretroI’ve had 2015 Chevy Cruz LT for over 3 years it’s dependable I bought at 90k miles now at 151k only thing is oil leaks.. try fixing replace things every now and than. A good car to learn from
Have a sonic with the same 1.4L engine. Agree with several of the items you pointed out. Another problem is the diaphragm on the top of the valve cover. This 50-cent part is not replaceable so when it breaks (frequently) you, need to replace the whole cover. Also, early in the vehicle years when removing the spark plugs, if you tore the cheap 50-cent rubber boots, GM did not sell them separately so the only way to replace them was to buy a new $100+ coil pack. Aftermarket boots are now available. Other than that, its been a good engine for me.
Great info ! Just finished replacing the water pump on my daughters car last night, now waiting for the rest to go wrong ! Hoping it won’t be for a few months/ years.
Don't let the car overheat. These cars run at high temps so cooling failure can overheat and warp/ruin seals really fast. Valve covers are easy too never pay anybody to do that.
I had a 2011 Cruze ECO 6-spd manual. Got 42 MPG with EVERY tank of gasoline. Think it had the 1.4T engine. Had very adequate acceleration. I bought it with about 28k and sold it with about 79k miles. Loved it. Only thing I'd change is I'd like to have the later version with the hatchback. Did I say I loved it?
My coworker had one of these, I think it was a 2012 and it had a problem with the CAT that caused her to get rid of it. Not sure what engine it had but she traded it in on a new Honda Civic. My sister has a 2016 Cruze so first year of the redesign. Not sure how the reliability compares on that generation. I always liked the look of the Cruze, certainly one of the nicer looking compacts especially for it's time.
Don’t forget about the little orange check valve in the intake manifold which causes the pcv problems ground wire problems!!! There is a kit or fix for all the problems, I drive 106 miles to work every day and have 170000 miles on my 2012 cruze but I’ve fixed all the problems hopefully 👍🇺🇸
Brother's girlfriend has a Cruze. Man, that thing has had more problems in the last 6 months. My brother and I both drive Toyotas. It's like night and day.
Hello, thanks, for this helpful video for getting a gist of concerns to take into consideration while in custody of a Cruze. Having an intermittant stall issue, and coolant was level was low. While it was hot, I removed the coolant resevoir cap. With each rotation of the cap, coolant started bubbling. The coolant level decreased proportionately, as the air bubbles escaped. The resevoir was refilled with a 50/50 mixture of OEM coolant and distilled water. Stalling persisted, so two weeks later double checked oil level because the engine oil monitor indicated 55% remaining, but it was reading the level in the oil pan instead of the level indicated from the oil dipstick. Two quarts of oil was added to the engine.
Biggest problem is the cooling system. Higher temps require higher pressures and the two dont mix with plastic cooling system parts. This is getting very common on most vehicles. To much dam plastic.
My wife has 2012 LT with 178K we’ve had it for 11 years, I did some work on it sometime back that it improved the power. It feels great driving it but boy it has too many leaking issues. I have replaced most of the parts mentioned in this video. Now got to replace the gasket on the oil filter house for the second time in a year. Very annoying but I still enjoy driving the car when it has no issues
My mother bought the Cruze 2011 Lt 1.4 turbo. Everything that was wrong went wrong. This car has been an headache. Cat, turbocharger, Thermostat housing, water pump, plugs coil pack, rad, all water lines, hoses. almost all sensors. Now when she stops at stop sign, apply brake on her automatic, rpm surges a little you can feel it in the seat. Could it be the vacuum brake pump? She spent a lot of money on her car. I have been paying most of the car bills trying to give her pocket book break. when she drives feels like nothing a wrong. Need help please. 139K miles
That's why when I bought my 2018 Chevy Sonic RS I drove over 2 hrs to get one of the last ones left with the 1.8L. All the 2019s/2020s have that little troublesome 1.4L.
Two Things That I Learned About The 1.8 Cruze is DO NOT OVER FILL THE OIL! 4 qts is the MAX and the other is it’s good to have a coil pack in the trunk with a t-40 and a small screwdriver so it can be changed on the road in a couple minutes. They’re like the old modules that Ford had in the 80’s that had to be replaced all the time.
I just bought a used one at 138k miles. So far I replaced the thermostat and now either the PCV or the valve cover gasket needs fixed. I've already driven more than 2k miles. But I'm lucky to have a brother as a mechanic that fixes my shit for free except for the cost of parts. Anything is better than my 01 Silverado with 339k miles on it. I was fixing that thing constantly. She's still ticking, how? I have no clue.
Sounds like the same engine Vauxhall/Opel used in the UK, they initially came with the wrong oil from the factory and would fail catastrophically in some cases. I had an Astra (150bhp variant) and got bored of having to rev it a lot to get anywhere quickly, the MPG was up to 48 on the motorway but around town as low as 25 which is worse than cars with twice the power easily.
I think a lot of people buy these expecting them to be Camrys and Corollas. They're not. You can't neglect regular maintenance, and you can't give them hell. You HAVE to baby them to get extended use out of them, and you need to be either good at fixing cars or have enough money to spend on repairs, because you WILL have to fix stuff. Even the most vociferous Cruze defenders will give you a laundry list of things they've had to fix. People who say they've never had any issues are very much the exception, not the rule. I've gotten okay mileage out of mine, but if I wasn't decent at turning a wrench I'd have sunk thousands of dollars into repairs.
Agree - These things aren't terrible cars "for the right type of owners". My Chevy Cruze has been a decent car "for me" but for someone else who gets all bent out of shape when a light bulb burns out or the tire pressure light pops on the dash, this wouldn't be a good fit for them.
Several times you point to the right side of the engine indicating the location of the thermostat housing. FYI: the thermostat housing is on the left just in front of the water pump.
I bought a 2013 1.4L. I was told it had a blown head gasket. I ran a compression test. 110-50-70-90. It cranks, but no start. Cylinders 2&3 were very clean. I saw small droplets of coolant on top of the piston. When I check the oil, it looked relatively clean no milkshake. I was going to replace the head gasket, but the low compression has me concerned. I know with the blown head gasket you do lose compression, but isn’t that compression kind of low for a motor with only 115,000 miles? Engines around here are pretty expensive and most have more miles than mine. The previous owner had changed the Oil regularly and just did timing chain and water pump. I haven’t pulled the head yet to put a straight edge or check it for cracks. The cylinder walls look good. I added a little oil to each cylinder to check the rings. No blowby.
My son purchased a 2011 Cruze LTZ w/ RS package brand new It was the worst piece of garbage I had ever seen. From day 1 ownership, it spent more time at Elkins Chevrolet then him driving it. It was a good thing that the vehicle was covered by a GMPP for 6 yrs/100k miles. My son drove that boat anchor for close to 6 yrs and finally traded it in for a 2017 Subaru Impreza also brand new. Since he has had the Subaru it has not been in for repair beyond regular maintenance. The boat anchor Cruze was the last GM product this family has owned. I own 2 Subaru's myself and other then maintenance, they have never been in for
God bless you glad you dumped GM and took up Subarus not my cup of tea I'm a Honda guy but you've definitely went a step in the right direction (the Japanese make great vehicles)
My 2011 Cruze was fine until about 90k miles then all hell broke loose. It was properly maintained. Cooling system failed. Transmission failed. When the computer failed, I tapped out and traded it in.
MAINTENANCE! I have a 2012 1.4t over 300,000 miles. Original engine.1 turbo/ 1 EVAP vent valve/ 2 new ignition coils/ 2 water pumps/ 2 temp sensors/ 2 plastic coolant intakes/ 1coolant overflow/ 2 valve covers (pcv system)/1 belt tensioner/ 1 alternator. My only complaint is the damned oil cooler leaking over the cat. It's a Lego car not hard at all to work on... Unless the dash blend vent breaks then it's annoying. Good cars if you know how to maintain cars. All of my turbo cars had turbos fail after 150k miles so turbo is pretty normal either way. The OIL COOLER gasket can FAIL! It will mix the coolant and oil together... You will spend alot replacing an engine over a simple oil cooler. My engine compression is still good enough and equal on all 4 cylinders. Best turbo car I've owned.
@Pat Caron The actuator one isn't bad to replace if it is the temperature blend couple panels and pull the actuator. The dehumidifier blend door is physical breaking usually. What amazes me is how wrong they can get the vent system all kinds of wrong.
Well said...12 here...only issue is cant seem to get my driving temp over 125,if it sits running motor temp gauge will move to a 1/4 driving goes all the way down on gauge and still have heat, but not screaming hot
I can't believe you have to change the engine in a 2015. I had a 2012 focus with a manual trans and the thing was dead reliable. Sold it last year with 120k miles in that whole time all it needed was a $300 cat.
The issue with these cars is if they overheat at all they can get ruined. They operate at 220°F with the turbo and once coolant drops out that turbo heat raises the temp fast fast. Dumb people keep driving until it's dead. This is mostly a stupid people issue rather than the car.
@@subarulegacy4203 This is true however In the dash readout it will show you the exact temp the sensors or putting out. 300k and still accurate. In these cars if you go past halfway temp at all whatsoever you are overheating. Seems pretty simple to figure out to me.
Not sure what the guy above is talking about. That 1.4 EcoTec is a massive POS. All these bitches do is either overheat, blow head gaskets, turbo failures, and etc. I’ve lost count how many times we had to repair these things.
That's why I always say that turbo goes into race cars and diesel engines, not to family cars with small petrol engines. I have cruze with 1.8 N/A engine, after 6 years of ownership and some 135.000 miles overall, engine still runs fine, still doesn't burn oil and didn't had any of problems you mention. All I replaced was a throttle body sensor, 2nd oxygen sensor, crankshaft seal and was sealing oil pan. In terms of reliability, it can comfortably go head to head with any german or japanese, common 4 cylinder engines.

Ok. Here’s my issue. I have a 2014 Cruze 1.4 turbo. I have smoke coming from the exhaust. Now it really only happens when I first take off and stop and go traffic (not all the time). I have replaced the valve cover, the turbo oil line and one other on the passenger side of the engine. I believe it’s called a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. Fresh oil change. Coil pack has been replaced also. It seems like it’s lacking power from when I first got it so I’m wondering if the turbo is leaking or going bad. My brother is a mechanic in the Army thinks it could be it. Could you please give me any kind of help or advice? I’m really stressing about this and you seem to know what your talking about. Thank you for any help you can give me.
In my experience these things are bottomless money pits. I had 9 customers with these now o have only one (thank God) and his car spends more time with me than him. Right now we are hunting down the cause of the fan radiator cooling fan running flat out the whole time the engine is running. It gives me a code for an Intake Air Temperature/Pressure sensor low voltage. $20 hope to replace it and solve the problem. Already replaced almost everything cooling related due to the thermostat housing leaks and the coolant return line to the tank (both problems you mentioned). Cheap car or not I would rather pay more and have reliability than have the local tow boys bringing my car home every day.

The Chevy cruzes milkshake brings all the mechanics to the yard
And all the dads like me that bought them for their daughters
😂 stop it wtf!
Have a 2014 RS LTZ and have had zero issues with it. Absolutely love it.
What day was yours built if you know?
Theres no such thing as an RS 😉its just a plain ol LTZ 😉
They just did a recall on several items. If it’s under 120k miles they’ll take care of it. I got a new turbo, water pump, engine cover and who knows what else. It feels brand new again. ❤️
I considered a Chevy Cruze when I was looking for a commuter car, but reliability was a concern. Ended up going with a Toyota Corolla.
You got really lucky from what I've heard
Good choice
I bought a Cruze limited for $15k. Had way more features and was much cheaper than a new or used Corolla. I have had a good run: had the camshaft cover replaced (free) & just had the water pump/thermostat/tensioner/belt replaced for $500. I’ll take it.
@@n_conway7571 All I need really is 4 tires and a seat, which Toyota offers.

Idk about that one buddy.
Update on the car & would you recommend?
My 2012 chev cruz won't start after my mechanic tried boosting. My mechanic don't know why it is not starting. I don't know what to do
My coworker had one of these, I think it was a 2012 and it had a problem with the CAT that caused her to get rid of it. Not sure what engine it had but she traded it in on a new Honda Civic. My sister has a 2016 Cruze so first year of the redesign. Not sure how the reliability compares on that generation. I always liked the look of the Cruze, certainly one of the nicer looking compacts especially for it's time.
the cat is not so that expensive to replace on this car
You forgot about to mention the PCV issues on the 1.4T! Super common for those to fail too.
Don’t forget about the little orange check valve in the intake manifold which causes the pcv problems ground wire problems!!! There is a kit or fix for all the problems, I drive 106 miles to work every day and have 170000 miles on my 2012 cruze but I’ve fixed all the problems hopefully 👍🇺🇸
the Holden Cruze hatchbacks are made in Melbourne Australia, apart from routine changes of the plastic water outlet its been sweet and smooth driving.
The diesel was intriguing. Both generations. Even the Eco 1.4t with the manuel was intriguing.
Oh that eco manual is a fun drive my friend let me tell you
Was the diesel reliable? Fuel consumption?
Brother's girlfriend has a Cruze. Man, that thing has had more problems in the last 6 months. My brother and I both drive Toyotas. It's like night and day.
Best thing I did in life was get rid of this car 2 months ago.. nice car. Too many issues
I replaced most of the factory plastics with Doorman because it’s much thicker .
Ran hot and broke twice on my Cruze already. Plastic crap.
yes, same happened to me, 3 times plastic housings broke, i now run mine with open thermostat, over a year and a half now, so far so good
Can you remove a thermostat on Chevrolet cruze so it can ran without it?@@icscompany3439

What I really like from the cruze even these had several years .They still running smoothly
The trans went out on my fiancé’s Cruze @ 96k miles. Right after the 5 year warranty expired.
I have 2014 chevy Cruze has 300k km on it and still going strong.
I’d love to see an update on the tandem axle F-150 and on the Excursion
My 2012 Chevy Cruz has 233,000 miles runs great original everything besides I put a new valve cover gasket and I have replaced purge valve actuator
Haven’t had any problems with my 2013 LT , 87,000 miles now!
Wait till you hit 100k
@@Greengoblin2345 if he hits 100k
I like my astra just had the cat done but the real problem is that it is a European car but for a 4 cylinder it really goes fast
FYI: the thermostat housing is on the left just in front of the water pump.
that's what I thought and he's gonna replace a engine with a junk yard engine I think I would have just pulled the head
@@johnmitchell2741 If the junkyard engine is from the years without issues, it might be the cheaper option anyways
No blowby.
Screw it lets just LS swap it.
I was gonna say the same lol
My son purchased a 2011 Cruze LTZ w/ RS package brand new It was the
worst piece of garbage I had ever seen. From day 1 ownership, it spent
more time at Elkins Chevrolet then him driving it. It was a good thing
that the vehicle was covered by a GMPP for 6 yrs/100k miles. My son
drove that boat anchor for close to 6 yrs and finally traded it in for a
2017 Subaru Impreza also brand new. Since he has had the Subaru it has
not been in for repair beyond regular maintenance. The boat anchor
Cruze was the last GM product this family has owned. I own 2 Subaru's
myself and other then maintenance, they have never been in for
God bless you glad you dumped GM and took up Subarus not my cup of tea I'm a Honda guy but you've definitely went a step in the right direction (the Japanese make great vehicles)
Wait till the Subaru needs repaired $$$$$$$$$$
Good Lord you got a Subaru 😂😂😂😂

Dylan that is a lot of parts, but also a lot of miles. At a 100,000 I'm reluctant to go on a long trip🤔
Mr @ thedylanjduncan what were the symptoms of a failing turbo.
good to see u back
I can't believe you have to change the engine in a 2015.
Dylan Duncan the whole problem is the temp gauge are not Accurate in the cruz and the sonics only have a dummy light witch is the dumbest thing ever
@@subarulegacy4203 This is true however In the dash readout it will show you the exact temp the sensors or putting out. 300k and still accurate. In these cars if you go past halfway temp at all whatsoever you are overheating. Seems pretty simple to figure out to me.
I bet it was only oil cooler gasket cooked out ! Really bad idea to put it where it is. !
Not sure what the guy above is talking about. That 1.4 EcoTec is a massive POS. All these bitches do is either overheat, blow head gaskets, turbo failures, and etc. I’ve lost count how many times we had to repair these things.
My car is the same as that, and I have no problems,God bless you.
In Europe those engines are bulletproof actually, and for our roads it's more than enough. Averages are in the high 30's to low 40's.

Ive had my 2015 since 2018 and its been the most reliable car ive owned, got it with 17k and now it has 101k. Always changed the oil at just before 5k
I have European model with a sluggish 1.6L engine, no turbo. Gets from A to B and is reliable, what more could I ask

How much did the job cost vs how much is the car is actually worth? Is it worth putting a new engine in something like this?

I bought a brand new one in September 2018 for 15,900 out the door with tax, tags, and title and all fees included in the price. I plan to trade it in, in the coming weeks.
U don’t need to buy a title lol
@@justriley9157 The title fee in my state is 56 dollars. Lol
@@justriley9157 you do have to pay for a title.its a few dollars or more
Purge valve, mass airflow sensor sparkplug and wires maybe the problem mine was purge valve and sparkplugs
Hey can you please link the “bulletin “ for the crankcase seal “chirping” thanks
I love this. Thank you.
My Cruz is shifting hard and loss of power and already changed the mass air flow sensor and camshaft sensor and didn’t help. Help!!
Did you all ever had a problem wit the timing cover ? I’m driving a 2012
My coworker tows his 4 wheeler with his 1.8 Cruze no problems pretty frequently. Stout platform!
Just traded my 2012, was looking at 3 to 4 grand just in parts. Said fudge it.
