I have never in my life after all those years understood someone so easily and so quickly like I remember that now that you taught it the way you taught it on the board makes it so much easier thanks man🎉
it only took me watching 400 videos to find one person calm enough to understand what they were saying....thank you for getting right to the point and literally drawing it out..
Thanks man I wasted hours watching videos before I found yours and I really wish you were the first one because you are the only one that made sense and spelled it out
Very informative! Been searching for hours I feel like LOL. About to go bypass the entire ignition on an 86 F700 dump truck project I’ve started. Appreciate your knowledge!!!!
I just got my 66 cutlass back a from paint and body shop and also had the engine and trans completely rebuilt. This car had electrical gremlins before but now are everywhere. As it's been many years sense Ive done much electrically on vehicles I had forgotten many things. This video helped me to at least properly wire up a push button starter switch which I'm thankful for as apparently my ignition switch went bad-at least the part that fires off the starter. Now on to brake lights, and turn signals. Thanks!!!!
Thanks a lot, made it really easy to understand. Seems so simple when you explained it. looked through about 100 videos of people talking shite for first 10 minutes. Thanks
*You just became my new best friend* .. "In head of of course" 😂. On a more serious note, I've called four traveling mechanics and towed my Saturn Vue into two automotive shops, w/less than 4 star reviews. I'm convinced those reviews came from the actual business & they are spamming themselves 5 start reviews. When I say none of these mechanics new Jack-shiiiish! That would be a understatement. My truck is practically brand new now thanks to all of the unnecessary brand new parts! I have low mileage, brand new clutch / transmission, replaced the slave and clutch cylinder. The Purge valve was also replaced. I just left a tune up no less than three maybe four months ago, somehow one mechanic read the codes as a misfire 1 & 4 , And he wasn't too sure if it was stating that the coil from one were four needed to be replaced so we replaced both. The last thing I was told by GMC was the ECM & center control module AS WELL needed to be replaced. Let me ensure you that no test were conducted before this sure as diagnosis was suggested. Needless to say I came home with my truck on the back of a tow truck thousands of dollars later and I was beyond livid! I hopped on UA-cam, typed in a couple of things that the truck was doing before it just wouldn't start anymore. One thing led to the starter another lead to the solenoid and eventually how to bench test a starter.. And Walla! Well I'll be damned thousands of dollars later All I needed was a $12 toggle and $8 push start and a good 20 minutes to watch this video! I guess there's no need to say it but I will anyway.. If you want something done right do it your damn self! And now I see why it is so important for men and women to know somewhat the basics of the vehicle they're driving if nothing else. Always run your own test and look these things up for yourself. Not to mention I also ordered a clear view home diagnostic kit, a multimeter, LED tester light and a few alligator clips just keep on deck! Had I done this for myself in the beginning.. The kids would have had a better winter, I would have been less stress in my wife would have had a lot more money to shop with. The whole household would have been better off. With UA-cam anyone can be a mechanic! But I also discovered anyone can also pretend to be a mechanic, come to your house diagnose your vehicle with BS, collect the diagnostic fee and never return to actually fix it. It is a real life scam that is going around and I would suggest anyone to do their own research. If you cannot actually fix the problem yourself at least no with the problem is before you pay someone else to fix it to any and everyone who reads this I hope all is well. #BackOnTheRoad ha!
Well I'm glad this video helped and you're absolutely right. Just do it yourself. I can't afford to have someone else work on my cars and I don't know how anyone else can afford it either.
Great video, if I decide to go with your first diagram, what guage wire should I use 12g or 10g and if I put a fuse in what size you think. And should fuse be installed battery side of wire to starter button. Thank you really appreciate it. I'm having problems with my ignition switch on my ford F150 the ignition, it works but you almost have to turn it 360° I figure if I turn the key to the on position and just push the button. It will save me from taking apart stearing column and replacing the actuator rod. Thanks for the help
I don't know why anybody would put a thumbs down on this video That is called haters right there It's crazy how people just love to put people down great video definitely help me I just put a new starter in a go kart I just bought for my son and pressed the button and it didn't start. I'm gonna go through the wires but if not I'll probably get a new button if that don't work I'm gonna wire it the way you just showed me Thank you amazing video Keep up the good information
Good video man... Very simple and helpful for a chopper project that I have about 1/4 inch of space to work with and wires all through the frame. Thank you for doing this during your sleepless night! 😅
I'm glad it was able to help you. I'd like to make a better video about it someday. I don't think I could come up with a funny enough video about the refrigerator.
Brother, I watched several videos which didn’t work. Was bummed out for a few days due to this pain in the ass ignition. Tried your version and it worked perfectly!! Thank you so much!!
Should work just fine but there are a million ways to go about it. I'd like to wire push buttons on both sides of the firewall so I can bump the starter while working on the car.
WELL DONE SIR! was not too technical for the DIY want to meh. As stated below was a good refresher, had never use the repay plus inline fuse. thanks again.
Very good info, well done TY. I have a question. I have a 97F250 and the ignition went out last winter, I switched out the entire steering column because it had even more issues with a 92 F150 and it wasn't a exact match but it worked pretty good and it was free. This winter OMG this ignition also took a dump, I couldn't shut it off, the key was just spinning around loose and busted. I had to dump the clutch and disconnect the positive battery post, ignition was stuck on and was draining my battery, now I have to open the hood reconnect the battery and short out the solenoid relay to start the truck then dump clutch disconnect Bat grrrrrr It wasn't easy for me to find and replace the column last winter, and I just had to take the bed off to replace a fuel pump in the gas tank and replace the starter motor. Also not easy for me I'm alone and disabled. I can put a switch in to start the truck but I still have to disconnect battery can you please give me some advice on a cheap easy resolution? TY
What a mess. The only real quick easy solution I can think of is to put a battery disconnect in line. Like is used on the back of a racecar. 2 Pcs Battery Shut Off Switch 12V High Current Battery Disconnect Kit 12V Power Shut Off Switch on Off, 12-48V Battery Cut Off Switch for Car Vehicle RV Truck Boat Marine ATV Power 300A a.co/d/1Y1fL7G a.co/d/1Y1fL7G I tried to add a link above. But anyways, if you could put a longer battery cable on the truck to somewhere that you could reach it, you'd have a way to shut everything off in the cab. This isn't the best solution but it might be the easiest at the moment.
100% agree ive watched a ton of confusing vids but this one was sooooo crystal clear and even offered bonus suggestions with the relays and fridge suggestions :0 many thanks
I appreciate the video brother, I am gonna be wiring up a hidden push button starter in the form of my old "washer fluid button" in my 70 Charger, your video gave me the little refresher I needed.
Thank you, I have watch and done so much research on the push button start because my starter solenoid was too hard to get to could not find one video that helped me out until I ran across yours thank you so very much for your help
Fantastic video for sure. What size wire would you use from the battery to the button and from the button to the starter solenoid in the first drawing you used?
Fantastic kind sir , really informative , I am going to use this method to wire in my BMW R65 motorbike engine into a Dnepr wiring harness , have been struggling and was not sure of connections , you have shown me the way, thank you so much.
Thank you, this was very helpful. I am trying to revive a 53 Buick Special. It’s all 6volt, and the wiring is so far gone I was thinking of rigging up a set up similar to this since the stock stuff isn’t starting the car. Would I be able to find a 6v relay like the one use used?
Try a 12 volt relay first on your 6 volt battery. See if that works. If it does not, just hook your push button directly to the starter without a relay. That's the way it would have been wired from the factory. Put a fuse inline if you do.
I have a 1969 Cadillac coupe DeVille that I want to put a push button starter on my car because my ignition wires are missing it will crank but it doesn't start just as you displayed the difference in your video so I'm going to try your method
looking to do a Ford, can you find a min. of a 10 amp push button momentary switch? Find the lead that activates the starter on the solenoid. Remove and replace with min of a (14 gauge) wire to the push button, the other(14 gauge) lead the other terminal on the push button should go to a positive terminal on the battery. Will this safely start the vehicle including the danger of starting in gear if equipped with an automatic trans?
The ford solenoid is super easy. I don't remember what terminals need what but there was plenty of information online to show you how to make it work. Maybe I'll do a video on a ford solenoid setup on a chevy starter in the future.
8:55 - Oh man, I just got so angry. I was seriously wondering what a relay could measure on the outside of a fridge for a split second. Good video either way!
the refrigirator joke was a cracker- i had a couple of qestions - what are the benifits of addis a relay & why not hook it straight to a starter solonoid directly - secondly i also noticed the relay has provsion for a ground wire as well- can you pls elaborate the benifits of having a relay pls
Every car all the way up to the 1990s had the wire connected straight to the starter. There's nothing wrong with that. Just make sure there's a fuse in there somewhere. The only added benefit of adding a relay is weight loss. You shorten the amount of heavy gauge copper wire needed to connect the starter. Adding the relay under the hood allows you to use a smaller wire from the push button, to the relay. It's just a signal wire without a load on it so you can make it pretty small. The ground on the relay is the other end of that signal wire. Inside the relay is a bi-metal strip that is pulled to make the connection based on the resistance caused by the 12 volt signal wire and the ground of that signal wire. That's what actually makes the relay work. All relays are the same until you get to the Solid State Relays but that's a whole other video. lol. Hope this helps.
To crank the engine, this works with both efi and carb. For EFI, your ignition also needs to turn the computer on to actually start injecting fuel as it cranks.
My starter has a plug for the (st) wire I think it's called would I unplug that and put a wire from there to the button and one from the battery positive?
I've tried other videos but my starter seems different so I'm a bit confused. There seems to be a wire from one side of the starter to the solenoid then at the top there's a plug in and then a big wire that seems to go to the battery
On the dry erase bored u put a extra power wire. No need for the wire/can't use the wire that goes straight to the starter from the battery. Ur power wire should only come from the push button since ur starter is grounded already that would be all u need to complete the circuit an crank ur starter.
First off I’ll admit I don’t know shit. But looking at his diagram the wire from the battery to the starter is for power and the relay is ground. That way a push button can be used in-line to operate the starter solenoid. Right?
Not sure why I cant get it to work without a relay? Did it just like how you drew it. Are you sure the wire from the button goes to positive? Used 12 gauge wire for it. Little wire to starter is my problem
Yes, Im pretty sure it goes to positive but depending on how you wired the relay it could also be used on the ground. Take a piece of wire and jump it from your battery cable over to the post that the little wire attaches to. I just want to know that there isnt a solenoid issue. Let me know what you find.
Definitely appreciate the video and the joke, haha When I was a kid late 60s early 70s back when they used to have ethyl gasoline, We used to do prank calls too people on our rotary dial telephones, and ask them if their refrigerator was running,, or we would call gas stations and ask them if they had Ethel, and if they said yes we'd say well can you send her home she's late for dinner, haha I guess I dated myself a little there, you took me back,, thanks for that as well! I'm having a tough time with a 64 Chevy c20 pickup I'm going to do a push button and see if that helps me thank you
@@DivineSpeed glad you liked it! you know back then I was just a kid and they would get mad, and I would be scared because I thought they knew where I lived! Plus I had an aunt Ethel well actually work at a gas station during the depression and they had to have tickets for gas well one time somebody came in without their ticket and already got the gas and she went under their car and put a screwdriver in the gas tank, she had a bout with polio when she was younger so she had a walker all her life so her upper body strength was amazing once she got a grip on you you weren't going nowhere, so I think I
So I think part of my fear was that she would find out and she terrified me as a kid she had a little mustache she always had to have that kiss aaaaaAaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh it was always a little wet too, it made me cry sometimes, God bless her I talk a lot sorry about that have a good day
Adding an extra fuse inline from the relay to the starter will not hurt a thing. All cars from the early 90's and older used fuseable links from the factory. I hope that answers your question.
@@DMNDkiLlz I don't think you can go wrong running the thicker 10 guage wire, especially if there is significant distance the voltage has to travel. I'm wiring in a push button on my Vanagon Syncro and it's a long way back to the starter. Could probably get by fine with 12 guage if you were wiring to a small block chevy (or similar) where you are just going through a firewall to the starter.
So how do you tie in an alternator to your diagram? I have a 90 Jeep Wrangler with all the wires out mice did a # in the dash the rest fried has no computer using a weber carb I am wrapping up,the 4.7 I6 stroker swap. Anyway, next phase would be wire up my CRT preformaance distributor, alternator and starter to a push button for testing before I hire a guy to rewire the jeep. I will have to learn more about the alternator to wrap my head around it but if anybody has any suggestions im all ears! thanks in advance!
When using the relay method can you use a lower rated momentary button to activate the relay or does it still need to meet 12v and 30amp ratings? I only ask because I'd like to hide a momentary push button kill switch with relay and a lower rated smaller button would be easier to hide.
I would think you would need a 12 volt button but I don't think the size matters since it is just used to activate the relay. However I dont know that for sure so I wouldn't take my word for it. I would just try it before mounting the switch permanently. Chances are it will be fine.
This is how i would wire a starter crank kill switch? Purple wire goes to the relay in fuse box, can i splice and add another relay in that purple wire to my kill switch, even tho its already going to the relay in fuse box?
LOL, you're not the first person that has said something about my lack of energy or sleep. I'm pretty much on the go non stop and I don't get a lot of rest.
What are the cons of going with your first option straight to the starter? I have my toggle switch going straight to accessory on my fuse box. Is there a better way? I have low voltage and starting issues.
Really there's not a lot of difference. The only con would be the lack of a fuse. Just make sure your wiring going to the toggle switch and starter is big enough.
@@MHTownsend57 I wouldn't be afraid to try it. Most of your older factory cars had the wiring from the fuse block to the steering column and then to the starter. You should be fine. I'd just add a fuse.
@@DivineSpeed I hooked it up yesterday and it works better than ever. Off it the toggle switch One wire straight to solenoid the other straight into ignition slot on fuse box. It starts better than ever before. Where would I hook in a fuse to this current setup and what Amp fuse?
hey i did exactly like what you did on this video, but my wire on relay 30 keep burning and if i put a fuse it keep blowing. one click and all dead. help me
Hello Realy hope you can help me. Iv got a Fiat 128 1974 model My starter ONLY keep crunking (stuck) if cold. Then i take of negative from battery and it stops. Then put cable back. Then start easy whole day. No problem. In morning it stuck when start for 1st time the day. Its summer now in South Africa. But in winter it stuck 2 to 3 times. Then no problem to start. If car is in sun. And start for 1st time the day sometime start 1st time without keep cranking. Sometimes keep crancking ONLY ones. Then start easy. After it starts. I switch of and starts again. I did it 6 times. Off and start off and start. No no no problem. I take of ignition switch wire from starter and jump it straight to battery this morning. Same problem. Stuck and keep cranking. Have to take of negitive wire to stop. Then try start again. Start at ones, no problem Rrrrealy hope someone no what cause this. Thanks so much.
That is an interesting problem. You might try cleaning your cable ends on the battery and the starter. After that, I'd probably do a load test on the cable. Use a volt meter and see what the voltage is at the starter when someone else is trying to turn it over. Could be several different issues, including the starter but cleaning and checking your cables first doesn't cost anything so I'd try that first. Let me know what you come up with.
I'm going to remake this video and better explain four different simple ways to wire a starter. One way will be using a ford starter relay. I appreciate you watching.
Cross two wires. Touch a wire to the battery cable and the other end to the solenoid wire and see what it does. This is telling me whether or not you have a starter issue.
I will need a little bit more information. Is there any way you can send me pictures of what you have to the facebook page? It will be a while before I can check it.
HERE IS THE STARTER BUTTON WITH TWO POSTS ON IT ....one wire from it runs HERE...the other runs HERE.....just how hard can that be to explain in a video????

the refrigirator joke was a cracker- i had a couple of qestions - what are the benifits of addis a relay & why not hook it straight to a starter solonoid directly - secondly i also noticed the relay has provsion for a ground wire as well- can you pls elaborate the benifits of having a relay pls
I have an old 1957 Ford 640 tractor and don`t want to bother with haveing keys anymore, will this do it?
Yes, Just have to figure out which wires do what on the tractor..
3 AM and you can still crack a joke 😅. Most of us cant even talk
Hey, if you can't be asleep, might as well be funny.
Does the engine have to have a carburetor? Or can you do that on a fuel injection car?. The engine turns just does not start
I'm going to say yes. Without seeing it, it's hard for me to be exactly sure but try it. If it doesn't crank, just make sure there's not a fire.
really good video! trying to wire a pushbutton start on a 86 F350... this will def help
Definitely appreciate the video and the joke, haha
When I was a kid late 60s early 70s back when they used to have ethyl gasoline,
We used to do prank calls too people on our rotary dial telephones, and ask them if their refrigerator was running,, or we would call gas stations and ask them if they had Ethel, and if they said yes we'd say well can you send her home she's late for dinner, haha
I guess I dated myself a little there, you took me back,, thanks for that as well!
I'm having a tough time with a 64 Chevy c20 pickup I'm going to do a push button and see if that helps me thank you
I hadn't heard the Ethel joke before. That's pretty good.
@@DivineSpeed glad you liked it! you know back then I was just a kid and they would get mad, and I would be scared because I thought they knew where I lived!
Plus I had an aunt Ethel well actually work at a gas station during the depression and they had to have tickets for gas well one time somebody came in without their ticket and already got the gas and she went under their car and put a screwdriver in the gas tank, she had a bout with polio when she was younger so she had a walker all her life so her upper body strength was amazing once she got a grip on you you weren't going nowhere, so I think I
So I think part of my fear was that she would find out and she terrified me as a kid she had a little mustache she always had to have that kiss aaaaaAaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh it was always a little wet too, it made me cry sometimes, God bless her
I talk a lot sorry about that have a good day
Awesome videos I'm currently swapping an ls in a mustang and these are very helpful videos
Thanks for watching.
thanks for the vid dude . very helpful.
Thanks for watching. I hope it works out for you.
@@DivineSpeed I didn’t add the switch but your video helped me narrow out the original cables on the car to make it work . Thanks so much
If you are going to bypass the relay and connect 30 and 87 should you run a fuse on the wire? And if so how many amps?
I'd start with a 30 amp if you fuse it. I recommend a fuse.
is it okay not putting fuse direct to starter relay 30? what if you put 40A fuse, does the relay will output only 40A only? thanks mate
Adding an extra fuse inline from the relay to the starter will not hurt a thing. All cars from the early 90's and older used fuseable links from the factory. I hope that answers your question.
Would 14 g be OK and what size fuse
In scenario 2 am In addition to your diagram am I still running the original purple “s” wire to the ignition wire
That's the best way in my opinion.
Great informative video. What gauge wire for solenoid ?
12? or 10g?
Great vid man !!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
@@DivineSpeed Thanks for taking a minute to reply. I'll give it a whirl this weekend and hopefully all goes well.
Damn refrigerator took off before I could react. You owe me a fridge. Lol
I appreciate you watching. I'll see what I can do about a fridge.
Excellent my friend
Thank you for watching Cesar
Is the existing wire thats on the solenoid removed and then jist run the wire coming out the switch im adding ?
Yes. You're removing the wire from the car that goes to the solenoid and replacing it with the wire from your push button.
This is how i would wire a starter crank kill switch? Purple wire goes to the relay in fuse box, can i splice and add another relay in that purple wire to my kill switch, even tho its already going to the relay in fuse box?
I am not 100% sure trying to picture in my head. You may be on to something. I would like to see this done.
What size fuse and wire ?
Not to insult you, but have you had your coffee yet? Its happened to me too. Great video. God bless.
LOL, you're not the first person that has said something about my lack of energy or sleep. I'm pretty much on the go non stop and I don't get a lot of rest.
Hell yeah ride on very helpful
Thanks for watching.
hey mate
can u hook it up to a diesel engine to same way
I believe so.
So If I put a push button on my old truck and I start it and it runs how do I shut the truck off?
You should be able to just shut off your toggle switch or key switch. Whatever is powering your relay.
Very good brother
Thanks
What are the cons of going with your first option straight to the starter? I have my toggle switch going straight to accessory on my fuse box. Is there a better way? I have low voltage and starting issues.
Really there's not a lot of difference. The only con would be the lack of a fuse. Just make sure your wiring going to the toggle switch and starter is big enough.
@@DivineSpeed Thanks for the help. You're not on fb messenger and willing to help me out tomorrow would ya be?
@@DivineSpeed Can I also come right off the switch and go into my ign or acc pm the fuse box? Using 12 gauge.
Can I do this on my Harley?
I wouldn't see why not.
Great job
Thanks
hey i did exactly like what you did on this video, but my wire on relay 30 keep burning and if i put a fuse it keep blowing. one click and all dead. help me
i think you need a thicker stranded wire 12awg, also check the negative wiring to your body chassis.
Hello
Realy hope you can help me.
Iv got a Fiat 128 1974 model
My starter ONLY keep crunking (stuck) if cold.
Start at ones, no problem
Rrrrealy hope someone no what cause this.
Good write up not many on u tube, just in time to fire up a 4.8 thanks
mike chepil thanks. I appreciate it. I hope the 4.8 works out well.
But how do you connect the wire itself
Which wire are you asking about? Are you asking about the actual terminal end?
Was any of you guys fridge running 🧊😀
I'm going to need to rewatch this video because I don't even remember telling this joke.
Very Simple & Straight To the point! Great Fucking Video Man!!
Thanks
So what gauge wire is 87 from the relay to the starter
Good video
Thank you
I’m wiring a switch for my car how do I cut power?
The switch going to the ignition should kill the power.
There's a reason this video shows up first
I'm going to remake this video and better explain four different simple ways to wire a starter. One way will be using a ford starter relay. I appreciate you watching.
Thanks bud
Whats amps should me switch be rated for
Hi.. hey I put on push button....but my starter gear won't pop up...???
Cross two wires. Touch a wire to the battery cable and the other end to the solenoid wire and see what it does. This is telling me whether or not you have a starter issue.
❤️ frm India assam
Thanks a lot
Thank you soooo much!
Thanks for watching
NOT TO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT DO HOW DO U WIRE A ZEPHYR AND HAS A OLD ELECTRICAL BOX. i DO HAVE A OLD WIRE HARNESS HAVE TO LOOK U UP.
I will need a little bit more information. Is there any way you can send me pictures of what you have to the facebook page? It will be a while before I can check it.
Great. I think I best not even comment on any of this.
You can tell me what I did wrong so I can correct it in the future.
good now how about a push button stop?
Shut off your toggle switch.
I have a question can you help me
Let's say hypothetically that my refrigerator has escaped...can you make a video on how to find it?
I'll try it has become a bigger issue than i had projected
Lol
Good vodiyo sar
Thank you
HERE IS THE STARTER BUTTON WITH TWO POSTS ON IT ....one wire from it runs HERE...the other runs HERE.....just how hard can that be to explain in a video????
