"Letter" BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4K Short Film

  • Опубліковано 31 гру 2018
  • My favorite actor was in town for Christmas so we made a mini short together for practice for both of us. Each scene was shot in about 20 mins over a three day period with available light, with the exception of a single light as a bit of a hair light in the TV watching scene and a fill light to expose her face in the tea scene with the window in the back. Shot shoulder mounted.
    Four LUTs created for different scenes of the short are available for purchase at shoptly.com/i/88b. Get 15% off with this discount code: youtube
    The music is from Soundstripe.com. I use this service on all my videos. Get 10% off your subscription by using this link: soundstripe.grsm.io/skyvistapro
    The "Letter" LUT pack contains 4 custom LUTs that were created for different scenes of the short film, "Letter." Although the LUTs deliver a consistent look, each profile is different to account for the setting in which each scene was shot. It is recommended that the outdoor shot LUTs,
    "Mailbox" and "Park," be utilized for your outdoor shots, and the remainder be used for interior shots. Of course, you may experiment in any way you wish!
    Music licensed from soundstripe.com: "No Empty Dream" by Marie.
    Tech: BMPCC4K; Cinema DNG raw 4:1, 4K 24fps; Sigma 18-35 1.8; Viltrox Speedbooster; Juicebox battery; Samsung T51 TB SSD; Sennheiser MKH-416 (see below).
    *I had a question about the audio so I wanted to give a detailed account: Audio was captured in 3 different ways: For the wake up scene and the mailbox scene there were roofers installing a roof across the street with 10 hammers banging. So, for this I recorded foley audio with a Sennheiser MHK-416 and a Zoom H6 recorder and edited it in. For the TV and tea scenes, I recorded with the 416 direct via mini XLR adapter into the Pocket 4K, with the mic laying on the couch and on the table. For the car and park scenes, the 416 was mounted to the shoulder rig and direct into the Pocket4K.

    Wow incredible short! No hate on the BMPCC at all, but it goes to show you don’t need an Alexa or RED to produce great results. Seriously great job on this! I also really loved the lack of gimbal work. I think too many people are ditching that raw organic feel to handheld/shoulder rig look. Gimbals are great if the shot calls for it and so is handheld. Each shot type has its place and you nailed it. Awesome work!

      The same look as in the video, you can also get with an iPhone 8+ or iPhone X. It's nice, but nothing special, it's not a "cinema" look, but more like advertising. For example, if you record with Arri and the old BMPCC, it looks like Cinema, why? The sensor plays a very important role, not only light. Do you know what Cinema looks like? See:
      This looks like Arri ua-cam.com/video/iQsrnA1RxBU/v-deo.html or this (RED and old BMPCC) ua-cam.com/video/gVFtNIIQwhE/v-deo.html or this (BMMCC and old BMPCC have the same sensor) ua-cam.com/video/y3ajgEgtQPw/v-deo.html or simple shots of streets, train stations...or city and people, like example: ua-cam.com/video/21BuMSxbQlA/v-deo.html ALL that i see "film"/cinematic and no documentation or advertising look. This looks, of course, has to do with the sensor.

    • @automatisatorpeace5453
      @automatisatorpeace5453 5 років тому +1

      @@GlitzGlamTVProductions I think it's the contrast, or better highlight with the old BMPCC. It's the sensor.

    • @Arvidje
      @Arvidje 5 років тому +1

      Yes what u say i find also true.. take a look for example at the old canon dslr, the iimage had a typical motion cadance to It , its the sensor and the glass. Sure t lack more detail and color but it had more dreamy film sense. Also the A7s2 had that same filmic cadance but the A73 looks more real life, something new is not alway better. The old bmpc pocket has less rich colors and more noise then the new but the new is more “hard” looking and less filmic

      Javier Aguirre, thanks! I always use the histogram. Depending on the lighting, it was between 200 and 800. Because of the way the dynamic range changes with the ISO on the P4k, more recently, I’ve been shooting outdoor scenes at 1000 ISO and compensating with an ND filter (you get the most possible highlight data at 1000 ISO). For shots where it’s dark and I want to preserve shadow detail, I go to 1250. You can see how they dynamic range changes on the P4k with ISO adjustments in a chart on the BMD website.

    I think it was a well executed story. The movement, angles, color grading choice, and shallow DOP all felt like it served the story. If I had to give some constructive feedback, I would say to try and motivate the reasons for the CU and Wide shots while she is in bed. It felt like you were just going back and forth. An option would have been to do a slow pull back on the wide to show her sinking into her thoughts for whatever it was she was reading. But again, I didn't really have a problem with it as the entire story was quite good.

    • @skyvistaproductions118
      @skyvistaproductions118  5 років тому +1

      Scott, thank you and thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean on the bed shots. One problem was that the Sigma does not hold focus while you change the zoom; also, I had to pull focus manually while holding the shoulder rig so I tried to keep most shots on an even plane (as opposed to in and out motion). One possibility to achieve the shot you described would have been to close up the aperture a little to get a little more play in my focus field. I had left it wide open to get all the light I could as I just relied on the early morning sunlight from a window. Nice reel, by the way!

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum 5 років тому

      SkyVista Productions if there was room in the room, you have just walked backwards a little bit and pulled focus instead of zoom. But you're right the sigma wanders on zoom. There are 1000 ways to do anything and there are no right ways or wrong ways. It's just something to think about in the future. Camera movement is a way to convey emotion as well.

    • @skyvistaproductions118
      @skyvistaproductions118  5 років тому

      I own the 6500 and I don't personally think this looks that. I did not adjust the sharpness at all. In the Cinema DNG codec, there is no sharpening applied. This quickly produced footage has it's flaws, but I'm not seeing it as being overly sharp. I did reduce midtone details in a few shots, but that was mainly to even out skin tones more than to reduce sharpness. Thanks for your thoughts!

      Floaty shots are the worst kind of cinematography. It's not realistic or "immersive" in anyway. They distract from the performances. They're best used for battle scenes when it makes sense. It's not creative at all. It's lazy, because you're disregarding your audience's experience. The human eye does not see the world in floaty, bouncy motion.

    • @Doddsy
      @Doddsy 5 років тому +1

      VFX Todd I agree with you, but this is a youtube video and not a film. The creator obviously is not going to use a gimbal, tripod, steadicam, dolly, multiple lenses for a single youtube video. Maybe he’s experimenting? I just don’t see why everyone needs to complain about it.

      Zak Fenning, thank you! From 100 to 1250. One of the great benefits in shooting raw is that you can adjust the ISO in post, non-destructively. It’s the same as if you had done it in camera, with the exception of not having the benefit of the dual native ISO of the camera. In other words, if you shoot 1000 in camera, and then want to bump it in post to 1250, you don’t get the ISO reset that the camera would give you at 1250.

The lighting, the camera settings, the colour grading? Thanks. BTW the best 35mm film footage I've seen is some of the shots in Lost In Translation, ones with Scarlett Johansson. Also Star Wars: The Force Awakens (35mm film) and Blade Runner the 80's one (35mm film.) The actress in your film Letter is a similar type to SJ so that helps.

      Hi, thanks for that! Unfortunately, no time for a tutorial, but I can give you some quick feedback:
      Lighting: She was next to a large window on her left, brining in natural light; I added a bi-color LED, matched for the daylight to give a little more pop on her face. There was obviously another window behind and to her left with natural light which set her apart nicely from the background.
      Settings: One big factor was this was back when the P4K used Cinema DNG - I still think it looks nicer than BRAW. This was on the Sigma 18-25, 1.8, with the aperture wide open (which makes the lens which is very sharp a little softer). ISO was probably around 400.
      Grading: Nothing fancy - exposing for the skin and grading for accurate skin tones, and I added a LUT I created that appears in the description.
      Hope this helps!
