I use the Shew Jazz as a multi-purpose mouthpiece and like it quite a bit, but I also like a darker sound.

If it’s consistently flat push the tuning slide in, thats what Bobby Shew does when he switches. ????Maybe the pitch center will still be off but it will probably be closer then it was on the video.

Played with the lead for a while and the little effort was very nice but I found that at the end of the day, I preferred the Bach 3c. I feel like the lead sacrifices tone for ease. Just got my shew jazz model though and am excited to try it out !

no not really. The bigger mouthpieces are actually a crutch for better tone. You will get a better tone on a low C with a big fat mouthpiece, but you should still be able to get a good tone on a shallow mouthpiece since YOU are making the tone!

@@elidewine9067 There is no definitive answer. Every player is different. The 3C's rim has more bite. Some people like that, some don't. The Shew Jazz has a pretty round rim. Soundwise, they are a bit different.

I have played both mouthpieces each day for years. I have found playing the bobby shew jazz for part of my practise helps me to get a more brighter sound on the shew lead. The lead mouthpiece blends well on any trumpet part including low G and F# however it takes time and practise and strong chips to get a big rich tone in the lower register. The bobby shew lead is the only mouthpiece I use on a gig since it is efficient, has great tuning and allows me to produce a bright rich sound. Trying to get the same sound on the bobby shew jazz is a futile exercise and has no merit. It is a totally different sound and for me is hard work to play. It is not the right tool for the job. If you are struggling to get a rich tone in the lower register on the bobby shew lead then you have not done the right kind of practise. You have to develop your chops to fit the the mouthpiece size. It takes time and practise.
