- The Yamaha 14A4a Trumpet mouthpiece compared to a Schilke 14A4A and the Yamaha Bobby Shew Lead trumpet mouthpieces. These are some of the top Lead trumpet mouthpieces. They are all very similar. They have small, but important differences which will make them feel slightly different. What are they?

When the Schilke 14A4a was made for Forrest Buchtel in 1970, it originally had more of a drop off below the rim bite (some refer to as lower or higher alpha angle). Over the ensuing decades the 14A4a has morphed into its current design. It originally had a standard "a" backbore and for the past 4 decades or so, has come stock with a really tight "aa" backbore. That being said, with the lack of a more pronounced undercut and that really tight backbore, many players chops tend to collapse rather quickly consequently, endurance goes out the window. In over 40+ years I've only known about 3 people that had long line success on a stock 14A4a (one being Jay Sollenberger), many went to the 14A4C (like Allen Vizzutti) Why the changes took place is unknown, perhaps due to the tools being altered...I use one of Bill Chase's original 1973 6A4a models and it's NOTHING like a stock 6A4a at ALL...I talk with Forrest Buchtel on occasion and he said he was going to dig up his original 14A4a and send it to me to compare.
I have a 14A4(c). I find that it slots better and has more core than the 14a4a.
Really don’t know how can anyone compare them, saying “they are very similar” … They’re very very different, in size & shape of every detail 🤷♀️
I like this channel, but he is very loose when he compares pieces. Something that is “very different” to me is “similar” to him.
Part of this is a difference between a discerning professional performer (who is likely extremely sensitive to tiny changes) and a hobbiest-enthusiast.
Thanks for the info. Was really hoping for SOUND samples.
Thanks, will be doing some playing videos of these mouthpieces soon.
I like how the shew is only 1percent tighter and you can still feel the addend resistance
I usually play on a schilke 14a4c but I bought a 13a4a and tried it at a gig (I'm 2nd trumpet) and my stanima was cut in half. The I difference is I didn't get no bladdy tone and the notes sloted well but I could bearly hear myself and my endurance was shot. Deffinently gonna give these yamahas a try
Generally Schilkes have #26 throat except the A4a models which have a #27 throat which is similar to standard Bach size throat. The Schilke mouthpieces seem to be the longest overall length compared to other brands. The Yamahas are cheaper so that is a consideration too. The gain in stamina using these mouthpieces on a long gig is the biggest bonus imho.
Thank you AJ !
